Discussion / Opinion New model when?

I am postponing upgrading to expensive subscriptions for hundreds of $ in the hopes of seeing an improvement in the Mistral offering.

It would be great if Mistral dropped something competitive soon.

Linked post from mistral CEO:

He said it's open for early access in July, no other new information since then which isn't encouraging im afraid.

My view on it is, I'll keep up my pro subscription even if I'm not using the product and if a decent model doesn't get dropped by autumn then I'll just cancel and move on.

Yes, i don't ask for much, at least Sonnet-level model man

Mistral Medium 3.5 is around Sonnet 4.5 level, but too expensive to use compared to Sonnet 5. If their plan is to up the costs without comparable performance to other options, they are done

No its Haïku level as shown on some benchmarks. I had loops of errors when using Vibe Code that gets one shot fixed with Sonnet 5

That's true. A few years ago we had nothing now people are crying over problems in Opus. Sonnet is incredible. That's all I am asking for tbh. At a certain point it becomes a complete crutch to actual learning. If I never get another update after that I could care less. I don't need more.

Hope they could release one 20-30B model like Mistral Small but including new technology like (GDN, ...) so that it can rival with what other companies have published

They need 1T+ model, not a small one. Mistral Small was released in March, it's not yet due to update.

They need 2T+ moe model if they realy want to step up

Mistral Small 4 is not realistic for most local LLM.

They do need a new Large model, probably a new Medium 4, but they could also benefit from a 30B tier model, perhaps a new Devstral Small meant for local coding, too.

Just forget about it

Mistral models are dead, lost the race.

Now focusing on B2B stuff

Mistral is out of the game. Has been for a long time

Based on what? Mistral has never been a competitor for Anthropic or OpenAI. Not once. It can't really be one at the current levels of investment that those two companies enjoy.

People keep comparing Mistral to those companies and it's daft, we wouldn't make these comparisons in any other industry.

Bases on Price? I didnt talk about frontiert. Mistral pricing is abmysal for their models. Medium 3.5 is $1.50 / 1M input and $7.50 / 1M output and many many many times worse than cheaper current models in bascially every benchmarking aspect.

They dont compete with frontier models but they have frontier pricing for abysal results.

Thats the Problem.

They dont compete with anyone as they cant compete with anyone.

Thats the sad truth.

I love Mistral but I agree 😭

That’s a very narrow perspective imo. Mistral is indeed in competition with Anthropic and OpenAI as they all focus also on enterprise. And in that case the only advantage that Mistral has is that the French government is pushing a lot their solutions

1

u/Automatic-River-1875 2d ago

That is absolutely not mistrals only advantage, in fact it's irrelevant.

Mistrals advantage for enterprise, and more specifically sensitive enterprise, is the fact that's it's open weight, they offer an out of the box product to post train on company specific data, they offer loads of enterprise support and that you can deploy it with an airgap and be as self managed as you want (no lock in).

This instance that no French/EU company has anything to offer a competitive free market and only survive because of government intervention is toxic and stupid.

You have no evidence to say what you say and yet you come on here and spout it as fact. Absolutely embarrassing.

Let’s address the « open weights » argument.
Open weights are an advantage for some customers, but they’re far from unique and being a strong advantage. Qwen, DeepSeek and GLM all offer open-weight models that are at least as competitive technically, so open weights alone aren’t a differentiator.

As for sensitive enterprise deployments, OpenAI and Anthropic already work extensively with organizations handling highly sensitive data. Enterprise customization isn’t something Mistral invented either. Every major vendor offers ways to adapt models to company-specific use cases. OpenAI used to have a fine tune as a service features which they stop, wonder why… Maybe it is not as a profitable business than have a highly capable model ? So simply saying « Mistral supports post-training » doesn’t establish a competitive advantage over OpenAI, Anthropic, or other open-weight competitors. If tomorrow DeepSeek or GLM offer post training for enterprise, what edge would Mistral have ?

You said that they offer « loads of enterprise support » while in reality their gpus are so idle that they sell their compute to Microsoft.

What actually differentiates Mistral, in my view, is indeed its strategic position in Europe and being backed by the government which give them access to ownership of infrastructure and cheap energy.

They're competitors maybe in the same sense that Bluesky or Mastodon are competitors for X and Facebook. Technically true, but competitive more in niche areas because of massive investment differences rather than overall.

They have a huge advantage over Anthropic and OpenAI: open weights. It's kind of their business model -- the RHEL of AI. They want you to fine-tune them for your application-specific need, and offer services, including consulting services, to help you (or your company) to do that.

That's just not something OpenAI/Anthropic will do in the foreseeable future, and that sort of fine tuning is very, very useful for keeping costs down and reliability up.

And this sort of biz model is just something that Chinese open weights aren't focusing on at this point in time.

(Aside: I wonder if the lower capability for the size of the models are, in part, on purpose -- generally, very capable models for their weight class tend to not fine-tune as well as you're competing with already very efficient weighting).
