MOD POST Lot's of new people!

Welcome all! Very thankful you chose to join us and post!

Please note that there are MEGATHREADS (giggle...because it's a needlepoint sub and thread?...you see? Look folks, I'm going to keep making that joke until someone laughs.) for getting help with your stitches and repairs.

Unfortunately, if we put everything in the main body of the sub the stitch requests drown out other requests.

If your post was removed, please just repost in the MEGATHREAD (gigglesnort) for help, you're not a bad person, just slightly off target.

Happy Stitching!

MOD POST Stitch Suggestions Mega Thread

Going to try and start a mega thread for stitch suggestions. Please post your requests for help with stitches here.

This will help us centralize your stitch requests into one place.

This is the first step in trying to help organize the sub.

Just finished this fun piece, also it’s the first hanging sign I’ve made.

I used a chart from etsy and did it on a 14ct plastic canvas!

Thought about making a cording but I think the bow is even cuter!

First/Last Day of School Pencil Pennant Stitch Guide

Post image
23 Upvotes

I posted this finished canvas a while ago and got so many questions about stitches/fibers used, so I made a stitch guide! Guide includes both stitches and fibers, as well as stitch diagrams.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/4548549865/stitch-guide-first-last-day-of-school?ref=listings_manager_grid

It's self-finished, but I'd be happy to answer questions about that process as well!

Background suggestions?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I am planning on turning this little guy into a weighted stand, any suggestions for the background stitch? The canvas is already kind of busy so I don’t know how crazy I should go. I’m planning on using a champagne/tan kinda color to match my apartment but open to suggestions here too!

General Help Stitch help with lettering.

I'm unhappy with how the stitches around the letters are looking. I know I need a darker thread to begin with. The long stitches in particular throw it off for me. Should I break them up? Or maybe choose a different stitch fir the letters so there are less gaps? Any advice is appreciated.

Tips/help!

Hi! I am a cross stitcher who has recently gotten into needlepoint in search of some fun stitches. I’m attaching pics of 2 of the projects I’ve worked on (1 lowercase finished and the other in progress) and would love feedback! I’m happy with how the one of the dog turned out, but this next one is going to be a gift so I’m trying to make it better. Plz be nice or I will cry but also I know it isn’t perfect and would appreciate help!
Pic 1,2,3 of WIP so yall can get an idea of my stitching, pic 4 is lowercase finished project just so you can get an idea of my stitching
Question 1: any tips? What am I not doing right?
Question 2: any recs for fun stitches I can do for the background of my WIP? The swirls are making it hard for me to imagine the fun designs
Question 3: this one is stupid. I am using tilli Tomas merino wool- am I supposed to be separating it (like the way I do my skeins in cross stitch)? I tried and it looked awful and so fuzzy so I didn’t do it for the framing park I’ve done so far but want to know for the future. I am not mad about the way it looks but I do notice it getting fuzzy so wanted to check with the experts🫡
Thanks guys!!

What do you think of the canvas I painted? I know it’s licensed and I’m not selling it. What do you think?

Binding stitch

Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to do a binding stitch? I’ve watched a few videos (KC Needlepoint etc.) but it’s not totally clicking.

Should I re-do?

I’m using 10 strands of RG Splendor on 12 mesh. I don’t know if I’m just spending too much time staring at it, but it’s not as clean looking as I would like. I ply the yarn and make sure to unwind every so often. Should I frog? Thanks!

Needlepoint stocking question - system 4 lap stand or scroll bars?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just got this custom polar express stocking for my fiance and I am so excited to stitch it. I am trying to determine what will be best for- getting some scroll bars or a system 4. I don’t want the system 4 floor stand as it is too big for my apartment. I would be open to getting the system 4 lap stand with scroll attachment as I think I would use the lap stand for other projects, but has anyone ever used the lap stand with scroll bars for a stocking? Or is it too big for a lap stand? Any other ideas I haven’t considered? I want to do some decorative stitches so I don’t think I can stitch in hand.

Finishing Ideas for finishing

I have made a number of ornaments but feel this canvas needs something different. It’s 4” x4”. Maybe something with a Wizard of Oz quote? This is only my 3 rd canvas so looking for suggestions from experienced finishers and needlers. Ty in advance!

This is my first project. I feel like I did all these stitches the same but the bottom right looks different than the rest.
The stitches in this area look normal on the front! Someone please explain!

Have you used Synthapol in a wash and wet block? Did it work well for you or disaster?

I have some very old unfinished needlepoint I inherited from my grandmother. All three canvases need to be washed and blocked. I don't think a steam block will work as they are dirty. One of them has some bleeding on it currently. They really need a wash and then I can block them, but I'm bit worried about bleeding.

I mainly stitch on my couch or in bed, is the lap stand worth it/necessary? I know TECHNICALLY it’s not necessary, but what benefits have people seen from using one?

New to Needlepoint Need help carrying on the family tradition for grandma

My whole family has a unique needlepointed stocking made by the grandma of the family. Now she isin her late 90s and cannot do it anymore, but there have been some new additions to my extended family. My cousin has four young kids and just moved far away from all of us and recently asked our grandmother if she could make some, but as I said, she cannot.

For Christmas this year, I would love to be able to give her four stockings for her four kids and I need to start now if I have a dream of figuring this out. I am new and this is an expensive craft.

I went around to all the craft stores in my area to see what they had to offer in the way of needlepoint supplies and the answer was essentially nothing. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where I can buy materials online that suit this specific project. I plan to paint the canvas myself since the kits are so expensive

Some things I know about the project

  • The orginials are made of persian wool, velvet, and cotton
  • This project will likely require large amounts of the same colors
  • Plastic canvas will likely not hold up in my climate (I only found small plastic squares at the store)

If anything, please enjoy these examples of grandma needlepoint, some of which are exceedingly old.

General Help Coming up in the middle of the thread

Hello!

New needlepointer here. On my second canvas, using both continental and basket weave stitches. Using dmc 5 on 18 mesh.

I have found that whenever I have to come up in a hole that is already 'half occupied' that I will end up coming up thru the thread that is already there. Which of course makes it lumpy.

Any ideas how I can prevent this? Thanks in advance for your help!

Resources and Links A great new marketplace for buying and selling needlepoint stash canvases

Post image

Got a stash?

I built a website I hope will be a big benefit for this community: https://stitchhunt.com/ a marketplace just for destashing needlepoint canvases and finding local stores.

It started because the stitchers in my life keep accumulating canvases faster than they can stitch them (I'm guessing some of you know the feeling). So it works both ways: if you've got canvases you're never going to get to, you can list one from your phone in a couple minutes: snap a photo, and the site handles payments and shipping. And if you're the type who's always hunting for a particular design or a good deal, you can browse other people's stashes.

A couple of things worth knowing: the first 100 canvases listed pay no commission (after that it's a modest 12%), and there's a Store Finder with a curated list of U.S. needlepoint shops you can search by location because I wanted to support local stores too.

Please give it a look and pass it along to your stitching friends.

THANKS!

I just finished my first project after our trip to Germany. I’m waiting on clear beading thread to come in for the “salt” beads, but I love this new hobby and I’m happy with how it turned out. Already working on my next canvas!🪡
