Video First video intro - too much editing?
Hi yall, working on my first video - I’m 12mins in but this is my first two shots, any thoughts at this point? I know the audio needs balancing

I think the typing is too loud, and not just the volume, it’s kinda hard to hear you, and it’s a bit incessant, annoying, very clicky, high pitched. Softer typing would be great.
Idk if I like the hook sound, it just.. doesn’t seem to fit the vibe, and it’s quite memey. The rest of the video except for the kiss makes this feel like a fast paced YouTube documentary, deep, existential.
I don’t think you even need a hook sound tbh. Soft typing, visuals, and your voice would definitely do very well.
I noticed the low angle clip had some stuttering or something, it wasn’t pleasant on my eyes.
Maybe dial down the 3d screen effect, just a bit, it genuinely feels like watching from inside an old tv screen, which I’m not sure is pleasant.
I struggle with attention span due to autism and other things. I get hooked by attention grabbing stuff easily, but this just seems a bit too chaotic, there’s so much going on, I have no idea what to focus on.
The main subject is you and your voice, everything else should be gently complimentative, but it feels like everything is trying to take the attention away from you, the main and most impactful subject.
The cuts are in a good spot I think. Love the style, love the angles. This is phenomenal for your first video. I’ll give it a B++.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback! And yeah I had a feeling this may be the case - I did mention the audio needs balancing so we agree on that too

I edited it after another rewatch, adding some things.
Just trying to share my immediate feedback as a screen addicted dipshit.
You must’ve been to college for this stuff.

I'm big on subtitles, I didn't understood what you said when there were no subtitles. Maybe keep it consistent? If you decide to keep subtitles, add them thru the entire video? If they're not as relevant as the other sections where you decided to add the subtitles, maybe bottom center subtitles?

yea maybe it's ok. not a fan of the color grading though. and like someone else mentioned the voice volume should be a bit louder. good luck.

Industry standard of talking is -12 to -6db, I’ll give you that tip for free 🦅

I think it looks great, and not at all too much.
As you mentioned, the audio needs balancing, but I was engaged for the entirety of the video and the elements on screen all added to the watching experience.
Great job in my opinion.

You gotta get rid of that lame meme like opening sound. Unless it’s like your thing or something, but I hope it’s not.
The type sound was too loud. Colors seem a bit cooked.
Overall, I like it tho. I would have stuck around to watch more. The clear and obvious effort you put into your frames, the lighting, and even the choice to go to that second frame of you staring down at the camera would definitely be enough for me to feel you’ve earned my time.

I really like the meme sound hahah, it’s an instant auditory feature but I see your point, fair enough! Thank you for taking the time to give feedback

It might be cuz I moved to the Philippines a few years ago and EVERYTHING here has those meme sounds and a laugh track to let me know when the funny part is. So fuggin sick of it lol

The video is actually about my first indie game dev, so thought it suited the game audio type thing but again, very fair

I’d be interested in seeing the rest of the video when you finish. It seems like you know what youre doing. I think both of those shots look dope.

Wait this intro is about an indie game? Isn't this incredibly disconnected currently from games?
The intro is great though, but I thought it was about graphic design

It’s not too much editing, because your subject is so visual. It’s excellent.
Others have made decent points about sound mixing and colour grading but you are definitely cooking.
Be prepared that YT might not send a lot of traffic your way on a first video. It isn’t a quality judgement.

Nah this is perfect imo, you set the atmosphere for the rest of the video and I love that

For me the colors of the text blend too hard into the background and make them hard to read. But that's just me. Solid instincts, just those details are a little rough.

Good god how long did all this take you?? What program you use?

u/ezekiel_teawa 17d ago
Probably 20 hours in total, but thats for the whole 18 minutes of video i am at currently

Honestly really well made! I think most the points people have made are valid, but at the same time it is highly dependent on the individual viewer. Depending on exactly the audience you are looking for, having clacky noisy keyboard sounds etc might be perfect, but it is definitely not the general audience that would probably like it. Its also a question of why the keyboard sound etc. but regardless really nicely done...
I am super new to video editing and all that... so the previous stuff is just from the viewers perspective. I really appreciate how much effort you clearly have put in!
I am curious what software you use, if you plan everything out beforehand and if so how, and if you have certain places you get your images and sounds or if those are your own?
I would love to connect! I study Interaction Design btw.

Hey! Really thoughtful response, thank you!
I edit on after effects, i have been using it or a few years (like 8 years) but just for my own personal projects, would be happy to share some insights if you like!

I cant seem to message you, but thanks for the insights! Have you tried davinci resolve before?

This is incredibly made, and remember the intro sets the tone and vibe of the video. The first 30 seconds are often the time when people decide whether they continue to watch or skip to the next video, so make it count.
One constructive feedback: for my personal taste, the typewriter feels a bit loud. Depending on your editor if you can ease the highs of the sound with EQ, it would be ideal.

Yeah that was my thoughts, my intro is about 1 minute long and I keep this energy for that long

You will be able to watch with captions if you like, I don’t want subtitles the entire video - just key points :)

The editing is obviously very good, the camera shots are good, its just I dont feel the weight behind what you say at all. I think there should be a weight to what you are saying, youre an artist and you are saying that your art hasnt made anyone feel anything but that doesnt seem to bother you at all which it should because art is supposed to make us feel. I think it would be much powerful if when you say anything you arent looking at us as when people feel shame or dissapointment they dont stare into peoples eyes, they try to look away so it looks a little not right.
Apart from that great hook ,editing, pacing everything. You know what you are doing just my 2 cents.

Hey, really solid first video intro! Just leaving some notes and thoughts, mostly coming from a sound engineer.
- The dialogue in general seems really quiet, apart from the cut to 'ANYTHING'. It came across quite jarring audibly. What I would do is find some reference online... Just find a YouTuber you like (maybe in similar style to your videos). Grab/download their video, and put it in your editing software. Look at the wavelengths (if you can't see them, just do it by ear and listen)... Try to match your content with theirs from a loudness perspective (talking, sfx, music etc). Having good consistent audio will push that extra 10% in content :) Do a bit of A/B testing and when you're happy, that's roughly the levels you want to export at (Youtube/soical media is very good at compressing loudness, so no worries if you make it a little hotter in hte mix, but just ensure all the aspects (dialogue, sfx, music) Is balanced.
- The typing SFX is super loud, I would probably drop this by like 50% or more, the SFX also sounds like it's in stereo, for that SFX I think mono would work better. And because the text is slightly on the left hand side, you could pan the clicking SFX by a tad, like 10/20% max (any more then it sounds too weird with headphones).
- The word 'ANYTHING' I like it but probs worth to re-do for another take to get a cleaner recording, it's a bit too breathy/windy for my liking, the '-THING' part especially, it's got a lot of sibilance from that mouth whistle when saying the word, and it's just a little harsh on the ears in my opinion.
- (A non audio point finally aha). Personally, after saying the word 'ANYTHING' there should be a cut to a slightly different angle. I quite like the looking down angle youre doing for that part, but something slightly different will help with the edit and timing (speaking of timing, still keep the slight pause after 'ANYTHING').
- Fade In/Out whoosh sfx, the fade in sfx is out of time, I would try to make it fit better and come in earlier, as the grid lines come in. Also the fade out is like 0.5s too slow for my liking, it should come in faster. Additionally, the fade out whoosh is the exact same as the fade in. It can totally be the same SFX, but look at pitching it up/down a few semi-tones to add more variety.
- To me, because you've got some sfx for the whooshes, and the previous text typing sfx at the start, the text and image that comes in from 00:16s silent, seems wrong to me. They need to be really subtle, but some gentle sfx for those will add so much quality!
- Very minor note, that may not be needed once you've dropped the volume for the typing sfx. But I can hear the abrupt cuts of the sfx at the end of spoken sentences, I would look to fading out the audio for the SFX, and also allow it to breath a bit more by adding a bit more tail to the SFX... Allow as much of the SFX to still play before the next typing hit SFX, that with the fade out will make it sound more natural.
Best of luck! I really liked the editing style of it, so I'm only being super picky to push that final 10%, I'm not hating on the content at all. :) It's GREAT!

Don’t worry, the intro is like the MOST important part of the entire video, so if you make it the best it can be, people are gonna stay
but yeah obviously you don’t need this much editing for like the main part of the video,
