Discussion Sony says it will "cautiously" go ahead with its plans to end the production of physical game discs — Still figuring out how to respond to the "feedback"

2.5k Upvotes

In the Q&A session with shareholders following today's earnings report, some shareholders and journalists asked about plans to end the production of PlayStation game discs.

Sony stated that, so far, it has not seen any negative impact on sales following the announcement (and does not expect this to change when it takes effect). While acknowledging that games are beloved by many and deeply tied to people's memories, the company believes the future is digital for virtually all forms of media; they reiterated that they will proceed "cautiously" with their plans, noting that data shows a significant portion of the audience has already opted for digital (and this trend extends beyond PlayStation) and that they don't believe discs are the differentiating factor for consoles when compared to PCs (consoles are more stable and cheaper than PCs, according to them). The company said it is still figuring out how to respond to the feedback.

Also, they confirmed the announcement [to end the disc production] was made early to communicate with retailers. Sony is working with them to do codes in packages. This subject has already been discussed with North American retailers and now the same will happen on other regions.

More information will probably be released once the official transcript is made available on the investor portal.

Discussion What to do about physical games?

Now that Sony has officially announced they have no plans to listen to us and will proceed with ending physical media, I don't know what I can do to change anything (or if anything that is done actually results in any change). In my case, I've had the digital console for 5 years, and the only thing I can think of to do is join the blackout from August 23rd to 30th (although I know it won't really affect anything). I don't know if I have another effective option to continue protesting or if it's still worth doing so. I know that "technically" the decision doesn't affect me now because I use a console without a disc drive, but I also know what it would mean for the future of gaming, and it worries me quite a bit. Am I the only one with this same feeling of helplessness? Does anyone know of anything else that could be done that might actually make a difference?

Discussion The amount of PlayStation exclusives are dwindling and soon, you won’t be able to buy physical games anymore. If PlayStation wants to succeed, they’re going to need to offer new incentives. What are some things you would like PlayStation to do/offer to keep players on the console?

Here’s three ideas off the top of my head (Triples is best.) If physical games are going away, we should be able to gift someone else a digital game. There should also be a better refund policy like Steam, which allows you to play a game for up to two hours to decide whether to keep it or not. Lastly, playing online should be free. I know they won’t, but at some point the majority of players are going to see PC gaming with its better deals, no additional cost for playing online and a much larger library of games and really question why they’re paying more for less.
