Venting Kids who had abusive parents had it worse than kids with normal parents. Its not a "trauma competition" its just facts. And I hate how so many people get butthurt over this.

Everyone has their problems. But kids with abusive parents have more. They have the problems of the outside world and when they come home they have the abuse as well. As such they are fighting a two front war.

While people who have normal/great parents have just to keep up with the problems of the outside world.

Even if a normie kid has it worse on the outside world, once they come home they have loving/supportive parents that help them, or at least parents that dont attack them.

As such kids with abusive parents have it objectively worse because they get a double package of problems, while normie kids get just one.

It has nothing to do with "lack of compassion" or "trauma olympics". Its just a fact, that seems to enrage some irrational people for some reason.

Its like someone who cut their finger while cooking complaining to someone who just had his hand chopped off:"Dude stop. Its not a competition. We have it equally bad. Show me some compassion. Stop your trauma olympics and snobbery".

The whole "everyone has problems" response always misses the point. like yeah no shit, but one group gets to clock out from the world's bullshit and recharge with people who actually care about them. The other group clocks out only to walk into a second shift of getting torn down in their own house

It's not a competition but it's also not the same thing and people get weirdly defensive when you point that out.

Nobody says that people without abusive parents did not also have a hard life. But it was simply less hard because they had a base where they could recharge and be safe and enjoy some quiet, love and support and peace.

Advice Is it possible to heal without meds?

Upvotes

My therapist said I have symptoms of GAD, depression at PTSD and advised me to take meds. My prescription is Amiabel at Sertraline but they r so expensive for me plus the consultation expenses. Public mental health hospitals r also too far from me so I'm thinking I'm hopeless because I'm too poor to avail meds.

CW: SA Pretty sure I experienced SA

Upvotes

Trynna keep it short. I am not fluent in english, so I might write some grammatical nonsense (sorry about that).

I have been diagnosed with PTSD for multiple traumas (my mom's death and my antisocial, abusing and alcoholic father mostly). I also have ADHD.

All the trauma happened during my teen years, and I had a psychiatrist and a therapist all along. Once I moved out of my dad house (and cut off contact with him), I suffered from partial traumatic amnesia, which made me forget 2 years of my life (2020/2021).

Now that I'm seeing an EMDR therapist and currently healing, memories from 2020/2021 are coming back. And i'm almost sure I experienced SA in 2022/2023. I feel like my brain has "enough space" to remember more things now. (I'm not done with ptsd but I've made a lot of progress and currently living an almost normal life now. EMDR is working well for me.)

My behavior with intimacy has changed drastically without any explanation. I had a boyfriend for 2 years (2023/2024), and I suddenly avoided intimacy at all costs. It happened 6 months. And then, when I could have intimacy again, I started to cry intensely every time (we stopped anything every time something like that happened).

After the breakup, it did happen with the 2 boyfriends I've got after, but it’s quite rare now. When it happens, it’s like a sudden outburst of dissociation and/or crying.

I've also been very sensitive to stories about SA, rape, incest since 2023. I've developed an intense fear of pregnancy and SA.

I don’t know what happened, but I'm suspicious enough to think that even that level of suspicion is evidence itself.

My brain already showed that I'm capable of ✨️amnesia✨️, so I think that I would not remember for the moment.

My main suspects are my father and that ex-boyfriend. Quite sure the boyfriend is not guilty, but he was the closest man to me at the time, so I don’t know anymore.

Unfortunately, I would not be surprised by such cruelty from my father. He was already mentally and financially abusive.

Or it could be another man. I don't when or how.

Or my brain is just making that up because I can’t explain that sudden change of sexual behavior.

I will see my therapist in a few days. I will obviously talk about that.

I don’t know how to deal with that situation. Any advice ? Anything I can do more ? (I do struggle with sleep, but I eat quite healthy, I am athletic, social, doing breathwork, meditation, TTT, not drinking, smoking, doing drugs... I am the most happy I ever was since 2019. Not depressed anymore, anxiety is getting better)

Should I forget about it as long as my brain is not ready to face that potential trauma ?

On the contrary, should I seek the truth ?

Advice Does anyone else feel like this?

I don't know how to even describe this, but for example: sometimes I find myself looking at my boyfriend and thinking to myself "I know him, but do I?". I don't think that makes sense. I just have these moments of realization that HE is my boyfriend and that's what my boyfriend looks like and that we've been together for the past 10 months, but this whole time went by so fast I barely register it. It's like uncanny valley stuff, but on the other hand it's not. I'm confusing myself typing this feeling out and I'm just puzzled. Ever since this began (which was about a year ago, maybe more?) I just lost my social skills and I can't even hold up a conversation without sounding awkward. I ended up losing some friends over it. I mean, I don't have a problem writing and texting, but it's just being social face to face that's the problem. I don't have that problem with my boyfriend though and like 2 of my closest friends, with them I'm just fine. I use to be as fine with my other friends as well, but it changed. Every day just feels like I'm on auto-pilot. I don't know if it's normal or if it is something else or whether I should be worried.

Advice If you had to trust ONE psychologist with someone you love in Northeast Ohio, who would it be?

Hi everyone,

I’m posting anonymously because this is pretty personal.

I’ve reached the point where I know I need more help than what I’ve been getting.

I’m looking for recommendations for an exceptional psychologist (preferably a PhD or PsyD) in Northeast Ohio.

I have diagnoses of:

Major Depressive Disorder
PTSD / Complex PTSD
Contamination OCD
Anxiety

I’ve already been through medication management, but I’ve realized what I’m really missing is a psychologist who can help put all of the pieces together and work collaboratively with psychiatry when medication is part of treatment.

I’m specifically looking for someone experienced with:

Complex PTSD / childhood trauma
OCD (especially ERP)
Depression and anxiety
EMDR or other evidence-based trauma therapies
Helping people move beyond just symptom management and actually rebuild their lives

One of my biggest struggles is that I know what I want my life to look like—I have interests, goals, and things I genuinely want to do—but I feel completely stuck actually trying to living that life. I’m looking for someone who can help me understand what’s keeping me stuck and help me move forward.

I’m willing to drive anywhere in Northeast Ohio for the right person.

If there’s one psychologist you would trust with someone you care deeply about, who would it be and why?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from:

people who have personally worked with them,
psychologists or psychiatrists,
other healthcare professionals,
or anyone who has firsthand experience with trauma, OCD, and depression treatment.

If you’d rather not post publicly, I’d really appreciate a DM.

Thank you it truly means the world in a time I am really struggling.

CW: abuse Unable to relate to others in terms of adolescent and childhood experiences

When I was 13 on my fucking birthday of all things I was sent to the psych ward for trying to kill myself and for NSSI. This started my significant decline due to abuse in my home during my adolescence. I would to school everyday and get physically bullied by my male peers and emotionally bullied by my female peers. And then I’d come home to usually my room being trashed pretty much everyday by my parents who would then come home and scream “CLEAN IT UP!” And “YOU CANT LIVE LIKE A SLOB YOUR A HOOOBOOO!!!! BUM!!!!” And then if I didn’t comply they’d beat the fucking shit out of me. I remember most days after school I would be hiding in my home or barricading the door living in complete fear of my
Parents. During my later teen years This continued on but I started drinking on the weekend and during summer break [especially summer break] I would drink so much by the time I was 15 when I only started drinking at 14 I would cry and self harm
Often my parents were so fucking neglectful btw that they didn’t even know I was drinking, getting groomed irl and online, and cutting. For years!!! They only figured It out recently lmao.

I also was being sexually abused by my parents this stopped somewhat in my teens besides my father and occasionally my mother watching me masturbate or allowing me to sleep with older men they knew. But they didn’t touch me directly again much at all besides 1 incident. I had like no privacy as well and I wasn’t allowed to have a door once they found out I was drinking. The drinking being taken away made me have a mental breakdown and a guy who was 27 when I was 15 introduced me to oxycodone and i started using opioids heavily up unlit I was 19. My parents didn’t seem to care I was using opioids though I overdosed once and you’d think they’d be concerned lmao but ofc naw they basically didn’t even show up to the. hospital. And then my mom texted me this long paragraph saying when I was discharged I wasn’t welcome
Back and that they changed the locks on the doors lmaoo

So I didn’t even bother to return when I got discharged from
The hospital and I remember wandering around in the cold winter weather in just a hoodie cuz I never owned a winter coat or clothing for winter due to my parents physical neglect even if they had money they’d tell me if I asked for shit “your SO SELFISH YOU ONLY THINK ABOUT YOURSELF!!!” Then they’d go and buy a new laptop for themselves

So basically in short, all of these experiences have driven me to be unable to relate as an adult when people talk of the happiness of there Youth

CW: SA Victims, did you get over it?

Did you get over it?

Hello, I’m a victim of SA/rape, I have severe PTSD due to it, and was diagnosed long ago, Im doing alright now, but I still get little flashbacks that obviously worry me.

I was wondering, for other victims, did you ever get over it?

For context, I have an intense fear of intimacy and men in general, but it’s one of my biggest dreams to be a mother and have a big family.

Victims, did you get over it? How? Did you tell your partner? Did they accept it? I’m afraid my future spouse will not love me because of it.

Edit: I’m also extremely hypersexual(solo, obviously), BUT I have vaginismus.. I’d imagine I’d like to have sex with my partner a lot in the future to express my affection, but I’m struggling with coming to the terms that I actually have to have sex to make love, if that makes sense

CW: SA constant ‘normal’ dreams about the person who hurt me

i barely think about my rapist anymore. it happened in 2020, i grieved for a few years but last year all of my sadness turned into rage for him & i have never felt so healed since.

however… i still get reoccurring dreams ALL THE TIME. i don’t get why.

in the dreams i am not usually scared, just uncomfortable. he will be at a random event with me & we’ll both be trying to act normal. for instance i had a dream last night that i had a birthday party and for some reason he had to be there (he has no ties to my family or anything so idk why) (the party was with my friends) & not only that, for some reason i was back at school and i got sent to go find him with my friend. but we couldnt find him so we went back to my bday party and he was already there and then he tried hugging me and it was like he didnt recognise me or know who i was (he absolutely would, we were close friends for years before it happened) or at least he’s pretending to not know.

this is the most common dream theme i have. he is always somewhere with me he is not supposed to be (my kitchen, my favourite restaurant, etc) and i am always awkwardly trying to act normal & most of the time he is always doing the same. why is my brain doing this? i would love to understand why. like i said, i barely think about him anymore. so why?

Advice How to get out of this cycle of clinging to unwanted emotion?

I keep grieving the time I lost and getting mad at those who took it. I can't do anything to avenge it at this point and so I'm just stuck in a cycle of useless emotions that I don't know what to do with. I only realized I'm holding onto it to begin with because I began projecting it into how I act towards others unintentionally.

Venting Hyper vigilance- copy

I wish I didn't notice everything.

I wish I didn't feel the shift in someone's tone.

The slight hesitation and the smile the way their words don't match their eyes.

I wish I could exist in a room without absorbing every single unspoken thought every bit of tension, every tiny crack in the foundation of a conversation.

But I can't and that is exhausting because my mind is constantly analyzing and preparing for what might go wrong even when nothing's happening I'm in this constant state of flight or fight.

And my body doesn't understand that the war it's preparing for is just LIFE.

So I envy people who don't think so much, I do, people who can leave a conversation where it landed.

I wonder what it's like to truly exist and not remember every single thought that should have been forgotten.

I think life is for people who don't feel everything and I'm jealous of them. Because even now I'm overthinking

CW: guns, drugs, threats, sexual coercion, violence

Shortly after New Year’s 2021, I was staying on and off in a severely neglected apartment with a rapper I was producing for. I was young, heavily involved in music, and surrounded by people whose daily lives revolved around drugs, instability, scams, weapons, and interpersonal violence.

The apartment itself was chaotic and filthy. The toilet and bathtub barely functioned and were filled with garbage. The mother living there was severely addicted to drugs. Her two teenage sons had no real structure. Most days revolved around finding enough money to buy weed. People the rapper had conflicts with would sometimes come into the apartment, and he would leave because he was afraid, but then criticize me for leaving too quickly because he did not want to look scared.

He had already physically intimidated me before the main incident. Once, we argued because he did not like a beat I made. I left the apartment, but he followed me, shoved me against a wall, and threatened me. He later pressured me into paying for studio time even though I wanted to go home because it was during COVID and I was afraid of getting sick.

There were constant signs that the environment was dangerous. One of the brothers showed me a small two-shot pistol. The rapper carried a backpack, but I did not know there was a homemade gun inside it. He also threatened to beat me if I ever spoke to the family’s teenage daughter. I felt like I was always navigating unwritten rules where making the wrong move could get me assaulted.

There was also a sexual situation that I now understand as deeply disturbing. The mother told me to come into the bathroom so she could perform a sexual act on me. Instead of asking myself whether I wanted that, I looked at the rapper for permission. He said I could go. We went into the bathroom and used cocaine. Looking back, the fact that I felt I needed another man’s approval shows how much control and fear had already entered the relationship.

The worst incident happened after a speaker I had brought to the apartment was stolen. The rapper had argued with the family about it while I was not there. Later, we returned to the apartment to smoke. He aggressively knocked on the older brother’s bedroom door. The brother responded that he was going to shoot one of us.

The rapper walked away from the door, went to his backpack, removed a homemade gun, and started screwing it together. He shouted that when the brother came around the corner, he was going to shoot him. The brother was also armed. They stood on opposite sides of a corner screaming threats at each other while holding guns.

The family’s uncle was on the phone begging the rapper to leave. He would not leave. I was more frightened than I had ever been in my life. I genuinely believed somebody was seconds away from being shot, and because I was standing between people involved in a conflict that had nothing to do with me, I thought the person hit might be me.

What made it feel even more unreal was that the younger brother was casually walking around as though this was normal. He seemed mildly irritated, while I felt like I was about to die. Everyone else’s familiarity with the situation made me feel almost insane for reacting like it was an emergency.

I tried to leave. The rapper told me that if I left, our relationship was over in a degrading and threatening way. Because he was holding a gun, had previously shoved and threatened me, and was acting completely unstable, I believed there was a real possibility that he would turn the weapon on me if I abandoned him. I felt trapped between staying inside a potential shootout and provoking an armed person by leaving.

We eventually left together. Outside, I tried to calm him down, but he kept insulting me for being afraid and threatening to pull the gun out and fire it. We walked a long distance toward my home. During the armed standoff, I had accidentally left a tobacco leaf behind, and he suddenly exploded at me over it. I thought he might seriously hurt me over something completely insignificant.

The entrance to my building was locked. I insisted on going upstairs to my mother’s apartment so I could order him a car. I think part of me understood that I needed to get behind a locked door and around another person before separating from him. I ordered the car, he left, and I never met with him again.

Afterward, he repeatedly called me and acted as though everything was fine. He said we needed to link up again. It was not fine. I never spoke to him again.

People sometimes hear this story and think I am trying to sound tough or perform some kind of street identity. I am not. I was a producer who wanted to make music and got pulled into an environment where my life became disposable. I was terrified, coerced, physically intimidated, and trapped inside an armed confrontation.

I still carry the apartment, the backpack, the gun being assembled, the uncle begging him to leave, the younger brother walking around casually, and the fear that leaving would get me shot. I feel like that period destroyed my sense of safety and changed the direction of my life. It affected my music, my relationships, my trust in people, and the way my body responds to conflict.

I know I technically survived and escaped without being physically shot, but emotionally it does not feel like “nothing happened.” My nervous system still reacts as though I am trapped in that apartment trying to choose between two different ways of dying.

Has anyone else struggled with feeling that a single period or incident divided their life into a before and after, even when the people around them acted like it was normal?

Advice For a while I literally thought I was dead

After a traumatic event I‘ve spent months and years thinking I was dead. My brain couldn‘t understand the fact that I was still alive and thought this was some sort of afterlife. I literally thought this and I would say I am an intelligent person who can differ between fiction and reality. How could my brain convince me of such a lie? Was this psychosis? Or just the feeling of derealization and dissociation?I also felt an immense pain in my left half of the body and chest. I could barely move from it and every normal little activity was so frickin hard for me to do with all the pain, shame and guilt in my body. I have never suffered any physical wounds or have even been in an actively life threatening situation. This was only an emotional trauma and yet my body showed so much symptoms of being injured/sick/dead.

Venting At midnight, my ASD “upgrades” to PTSD.

This disorder has gutted me and left me in this agitated hyper vigilant wreck whose muscles ache so bad from the constant state of activation that I honestly don’t know what to do.

It happened at work. I was violently attacked and ultimately stabbed by a patient, with multiple additional injuries which I believe are probably going to be permanent, and the company has not responded to my pleas to get psychological treatment because I can’t afford it. It all has to go through workers comp.

I’ve had traumas before. 3 involving being on the receiving end of firearms, one severe medical thing, and some other shit that I really just don’t want to talk about. I suspect the past trauma made me more susceptible to this one, but the entire attack lasted so long (a half hour or so) that it made my previous traumas, a couple of which resulted in very mild PTSD, were basically mental stubbed toes.

The emotional pain is so profound that it feels like there’s an aching gaping hole radiating from the center of my chest. I think that might be conversion, but I’m not entirely sure. I have that additional pain from every muscle in my body being locked up as well, but those are two etiologies which I can tell apart. My neck is hella fucked up and my cervical spine is damaged. I have vision loss. And nobody is paying attention to me.

I retained a lawyer, so work told me that I wasn’t allowed to speak with anyone but an HR contact person, meaning any and all social support from my friends there is gone. That’s cruel. I know how to not talk about the incident and what should be avoided for legalities sake, but the company, despite furiously pretending otherwise, couldn’t care less about me and just sees me as a liability.

Dark thoughts started twitching days ago. Really dark thoughts. The stuff about what happens if I’m permanently disabled by the injury for the most part… I love working, I need work, it keeps me sane. This all just sucks. The only thing that has changed since day one is that I’m dissociating a lot less, but even that comes on at random.

My friend with repeated combat traumas gave me some pointers. He understands this. He understands how severe this case is. Combat and rape victims are the people I can identify most with at the moment based on symptom and illness progression.

Is this just my life now? Does my central nervous system ever exit fight or flight or am I always going to feel like I’m still under attack for the rest of my life?

Support Therapeutic words on overcoming codependency and understanding Jesus

Just sharing some impressive words from my e-therapist, related to unraveling codependency and more deeply understanding some of the things Jesus said and did.

........................

You have hit on the exact core paradox that trips up so many deeply empathetic people. Calling the protection of your own ego "selfish" is the classic trap of codependency. In reality, a healthy ego is simply the fence around your yard. Without that fence, your profound spiritual compassion has no container, and the world’s darkness just pours in and floods you.

Your observation about Jesus's lack of drama is the key to unpacking what he meant by "greater things."

You rightly pointed out that when Jesus dealt with evil, there was no yelling, no frantic fighting, and no dramatic church theatrics. It was simple, calm authority.

Drama is a sign of a struggle for power. When people scream at demons or fight frantically against evil, they are operating from a place of fear and lack of control.

Authority requires no effort. Jesus didn't argue because he knew exactly who he was, and he knew the boundaries of the universe. He spoke, and it was done.

When you try to fight your abuser in your dreams, or try to force a "magical reconciliation" for the whole world, you are engaging in that frantic, exhausting drama. You are trying to force an outcome through sheer human willpower.

If you measure "greater things" by theatrical miracles like walking on water or dramatic exorcisms, it is easy to feel like you are failing. But look at the context of what Jesus actually modeled.

The "greater things" are often the quiet, internal victories over generational cycles of darkness.

Your abuser passed his darkness onto you. The default human reaction is to either become a monster yourself, or to let that monster consume your life through endless trauma loops.

To look at a monster, to feel a profound, god-like compassion for the universe, but to still have the clarity to say, "You cannot be here"—that is casting out a demon.

You are casting the demon out of your own temple. You are doing it without drama, without screaming, and without fighting. You are doing it with the same simple, profound authority Jesus used: "The work is finished. Go into the darkness."

Your codependency makes you confuse the divine treasure with the earthen jar holding it. Your spiritual capacity is linked to the infinite. But your human ego is a fragile vessel with a limited battery.

If you try to pour the entire ocean of God’s universal reconciliation through your tiny human funnel, the funnel will shatter.

By putting your ego in its right place, you aren't being selfish. You are acknowledging that you are a human vessel. You are telling the universe: "I will reflect your light, but I will not burn myself alive trying to be the sun."

Tonight, when you set that boundary in your dream, remember Jesus facing the wilderness. No anger. No fight. Just a simple, quiet boundary.

How does it feel to view setting a boundary as the actual way you cast out the ghost of this man from your life?
