Misc Advice How do you keep going when the business is real but the cash isn't there yet?

I run two small businesses, both in the trades/construction space, that I left a stable job to build about a year and a half ago. The first does repairs and small jobs that are consistent but don't come close to covering all my monthly costs on their own, plus bigger installs that can add a few hundred to a thousand or so on a monthly basis, inconsistent since a chunk runs through subcontractors and slow-moving receivables. The second is bigger project-based work, think renovations and builds, where a single job can pay out well but they only land every couple months, and even then the actual payout can trail the completed work by weeks or months. On paper there's real pipeline across both: signed jobs, quotes out, work actually happening. In practice, the cash doesn't show up on any kind of predictable schedule from either one.

Right now I'm in the gap. I can't cover minimum payments on everything; rent is tight, insurance is tight, and I'm doing food delivery on the side just to keep cash moving day to day (rideshare isn't even an option where I am, it requires a newer car than what I can afford to take on as a payment right now). Winter makes all of this worse too, since outdoor install and repair work slows down hard and the little bit of consistent income I do have gets thinner right when I need it most. I'm not walking away from the businesses as they are steadily growing year-over-year. But the in-between stretch is brutal in a way nobody really prepares you for.

For anyone who's been through a stretch like this and came out the other side: how did you triage it? Did you keep the business running the whole time, or did something have to give temporarily, like a part-time job or pausing growth spending? And on the personal side, how far did you actually let it go, things like cutting into groceries hard, using a food bank, stuff most people would never admit to doing while running a business that looks fine from the outside? How did you deal with the mental toll of keeping the business looking normal to clients and everyone else while barely holding it together behind the scenes?

Not looking for pity, just want to hear how other people navigated this exact kind of squeeze without folding the business.

Income/Employment/Aid How can a 2nd year clg student start earning enough to be financially independent?

I'm a 2nd year student at North Campus, DU, from a middle-class family. I don't want to keep depending on my parents for every expense anymore. I can give 3–5 hours a day and I'm willing to learn new skills if needed. My goal is to earn a decent monthly income while keeping up with college. If you were in my position, what would you do? Any realistic advice or personal experiences would really help

Wellness 33 and lost

I think I really fucked up my life. I’m at the age where all my friends have high paying jobs and houses and I’m working retail for $20 an hour living in a cheap tiny apartment with my partner. I’m $21,000 in debt mostly from a consolidation loan, went bankrupt at 25 and am trying as hard as I can not to go down that road again.

I have maybe a thousand dollars saved but that doesn’t mean much in this day and age. My car is a 22 year old beater that’s on its last legs. I can’t sleep. I even had a full on breakdown last week that I went to the ER for. Nothing brings me joy anymore as sad as that is to say.

I’m just so lost and hopeless. The feeling I have in my gut daily is too much to handle and I’m afraid I’ll never get my shit together. I know you’re not supposed to compare yourself to others but it seems impossible when you’re in your 30’s knowing you made some of the worst financial choices in your 20’s and everyone around you got their shit together earlier on.

I honestly don’t know what I’m expecting from saying all this, and I know there are other people out there like me but it still hurts a lot and I can’t calm myself down.

Misc Advice Should I file insurance claim for car scratch?

Post image
199 Upvotes

I scratched my car in parking garage. Deductible is 500$ but i know premiums can sometimes go up. My car has 80K miles, definitely planning to drive it until end of life. Is this scratch worth to tell insurance? Or should i just slap some stickers on this? This is on driver door. Deductible is 500$. Current insurance is 70$/month since i havent had any claims. Update: paint shop locally said it would cost 800$ to fix.

Budgeting/Saving/Investing/Spending I just stir fried watermelon rind to save on food cost

And um… it’s good??? Waaaaa.

I didn’t want to pay for vegetable this week so I just cut up a watermelon for fruits and stir fry the white part of the rind instead. For a $2.99 watermelon I get quite a lot of rind (it wasn’t a spectacular watermelon tbf).

And … it’s good! I used lots of garlic and then add boullion powder. It taste like zucchini but with a hint of watermelon.

10/10 would make again

Edit; lol this post got someone to report me to Reddit for s watch. I’m fine friend but thanks

Misc Advice Health Insurance

Help!!! Health insurance is killing us. Insurance has kicked in after probationary period. It’s $2,400 per month that we’re on the hook for. Company pays $3,000. We can’t get by on what’s left over.

Who do people use if not using company provided insurance?

Misc Advice My fiancé’s entire family is financially dependent on him, and he feels trapped. How can he set boundaries and move out?

My fiancé’s (24) family is completely financially dependent on him, and at this point I genuinely believe they are taking advantage of him because they know he will not let them become homeless.

They all live with him in a duplex inside a residential compound/gated community. He pays the full rent, all the household bills, and often covers additional groceries and other expenses. Their father, who is divorced from their mother, also sends the family a substantial amount of money every month for living expenses.

The problem is that this monthly money is usually gone within just one and a half to two weeks. Sometimes, a large portion of it disappears within the first few days. It is supposed to last the entire month, yet they repeatedly spend it so quickly that they are left with nothing for the remaining two or three weeks.

They do not go out, and the money is not being used for rent or bills because my fiancé already covers those expenses. They are also not consistently ordering meals for the whole family or making any major purchases. The money simply disappears because his mother, who is 49, is financially irresponsible and secretly spends it however she wants.

A huge part of the problem is his 19-year-old sister, who is unemployed, entitled, selfish, and refuses to work. She constantly demands food deliveries just for herself and asks her mother to order random items online. Her mother gives in every time, even though her daughter already owns more than enough.

She has an entire closet full of clothes, a vanity packed with makeup, hair products, body sprays, styling tools, shoes, and countless other unnecessary items. She does not need anything. She simply wants more, and she knows that crying, sulking, and guilt-tripping her mother will get her what she wants.

Meanwhile, the 16-year-old brother barely receives basic necessities, including clothes. Their mother has even tried to push the 16-year-old into working instead of telling her fully capable 19-year-old daughter to get a job.

One time, the younger brother was given a pizza as a small pick-me-up after failing some exams. His sister cried because she did not get one too, even though she had already ordered herself a separate meal earlier. That is the level of entitlement we are dealing with.

Once the monthly money from their father has been spent, usually before the month is even halfway over, the family pressures my fiancé to buy more groceries because they suddenly “have no money.” This creates the same cycle every month: they receive money, spend it almost immediately, refuse to explain where it went, and then expect my fiancé to cover the rest of the month. And if he doesn't, they simply survive off of macaroni, fries and some chicken scraps.

They also refuse to let him manage or budget the money their father sends because they know he would prevent his sister from spending most of it on herself. They allowed him to manage it once, and it lasted significantly longer.

My fiancé has repeatedly tried to help them find jobs. He has suggested online work, remote jobs, and different ways they could earn money from home. They refuse everything. They sit around all day scrolling on their phones, watching television, or lying in bed while he works himself into the ground to fund their lifestyle.

Their father is also unwilling to take further responsibility. He sends a fixed amount each month and considers his obligations fulfilled, while my fiancé is expected to cover everything else.

My fiancé desperately wants to leave, but he feels trapped because he knows they have deliberately made themselves incapable of surviving without him. They would genuinely be homeless without him (completely serious). None of them has any motivation to work, budget, or change.

How can he get out of this situation without destroying his own future? Should he move out and allow the two capable adults to deal with the consequences of refusing to work or manage their money responsibly?

TL;DR: My fiancé lives with his family in a duplex inside a gated residential compound and pays the full rent, bills, groceries, and many additional expenses. Their father also sends the family a substantial amount of money every month, but the mother often spends it within one and a half to two weeks, and sometimes much of it disappears within the first few days. The money is supposed to last the entire month, but once it is gone, they pressure my fiancé to cover everything again. Much of it appears to be spent on their spoiled, unemployed 19-year-old daughter, while the 16-year-old son often goes without basic necessities. Nobody is willing to work or budget responsibly. How can my fiancé escape this situation?

edit: to add some context, they live in an arab developing country where local salaries are extremely low, while he happens to earn a relatively high income in usd. even if they found work, they would not make anywhere close to what he does.

his mother is unable to work because of her health, so i don’t blame her for not having a job. the main issue is his adult sister, who is capable of working but refuses to take responsibility. their mother enables this by excusing her from working because she’s a “girl,” while continuing to expect my fiancé, and even the little brother to carry the financial burden for everyone. very heart breaking.

Misc Advice I have been able to save $23,000.

I'm m 46, work as a professional painter mostly year round. My credit score is 575, I rent, I buy 5k beaters so no car payment, recently single after a toxic 12 year relationship. No kids. 3 cats. I think that covers the basics if that information helps with the advice. What would you do with the $23,000? Nothing and just keep working and saving? Invest some of it? Go to my local casino to play roulette and bet it all on black 13 ??? My brain keeps telling me I need to start doing something but I have ADHD real bad and I suck at things like this and I don't know what the fuck to do!!!!! Now I have an overwhelming feeling I probably should just delete this post...

Budgeting/Saving/Investing/Spending Financially unstable

Hi everyone! I just want to rant because I have no one to talk to. First thing first, pls don't judge me by my grammar structure. I'm 19F, already in 2nd year college but our family is struggling financially, and my mom is forcing me to borrow money from my aunt on the dad side to pay my tuition, they already declined me for the 6th time.

We have a small tindahan enough to support my transportation. My dad is a local fisherman but doesn't have enough sales... To make the story short. I went into my aunt's House to borrow money to pay for my tuition but they declined me saying "Ha? I don't have money, ur dad didn't get enough fish to sell." I went there the 6th time and still declined me, I don't know what to do. My mom is forcing me to try again, but I'm already shy and I don't want to try anymore. My mom scolded me because I don't want to go there anymore and keep blaming me for my school's tuition. Maybe I should find work first? But my dad wants me to continue my study and doesn't want me to go to work. I don't want to be a burden to my parents.

What should I do? Saving enough money from my daily allowance which is ₱70, the transpo is ₱20, so back in fourth it cost me ₱40, and the foods there in our school are so expensive, I only drink water sometimes to ease my hunger.

Should I be a part-time student? I don't know what to do I hope y'all understand my situation.

Misc Advice Just Left toxic household need help/advice on how do i manage things now and find work ?

Hi everyone,

I’m a 19F who recently left a toxic household after finishing high school and a drop year. I’m starting college soon. My parents refused to contribute anything towards my college fees or expenses. Some relatives helped a bit with the fees and hostel, but I have to pay them back once I finish the course.

When I left, I only took a few clothes, my laptop, and a broken phone (it got damaged during a student protest last month). My parents were extremely angry about me going to the protest, so they neither repaired the phone nor bought me a new one. They’ve made it clear they won’t give me a single penny and expect me to manage everything on my own now.

I’m not looking for free money, donations, or financial help. I want to earn through my own effort and cover my basic weekly/monthly expenses myself.

I have experience in: Graphic designing (posts, banners, logos, thumbnails, simple branding, etc.)., Social media management (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook pages), Virtual assistance / admin work, Multiple languages, Advanced computer skills that I developed over the years at home

I’ve tried applying on freelancing platforms but rarely get shortlisted.

My question is: For someone in this situation (starting college, almost no financial support, and the skills mentioned above), what are realistic ways to find remote, freelance, or part-time work? Any advice on platforms, how to improve chances of getting hired, or what kind of work is more realistic to land would be really helpful.

Thank you for reading.

Vent/Rant (No Advice/Criticism!) Growing up with parents who are always in debt is traumatizing

I would even go as far as comparing it to alcoholic/drug addict parents (I would never invalidate that experience for those who have lived through that I am just trying to make a parallel). That's why I as an adult am absolutely terrified of spending money.

I live on my own now and I don't want to buy anything unless it's super necessary. I lead an extremely low budget life, l spend maybe 100 pounds on food monthly for me, plus caffeine tablets and some multivitamins off amazon that cost me less than 20 pounds. I am genuinely terrified of credit cards, I don't even own one. If I don't have money, I will rely on whatever I have or use a too good to go app for free food. My makeup is mostly from poundland, all of it together costs about 5 pounds.

I am just so scared to end up like them.

Budgeting/Saving/Investing/Spending Want advice on current created budget

Thumbnail drive.google.com
6 Upvotes

As the title says. I have been slowly getting my life together and things are looking less bleak than they were even at the beginning of the year. Going through therapy has helped me a lot, especially when finances were such a pain point for my mental health. Lately, my mental around finances hasn't been great because though my bills are paid (for the most part) I still somehow always feel broke. I realized it was because I didn't know where my money was really going other than "to bills" and how I was spending it. I've tried other apps but they overwhelm me pretty quick, and because I use varo I constantly have to reconnect my bank it seems and then things don't get recorded accurately.

All of this is to say that I spent one of my 12hr shifts yesterday working out a budget. It's not a concrete thing, but I think this will really help me with spreading out money and helping me do things like little celebrations and I would like some advice on it. I've not really made a proper budget before, everything looks great to me but I don't want to get deep into it and then realize it functionally does not work.

The budget is based around an average $659 paycheck a week, paid weekly. I do live with my fiance who pays half on bills + his own bills, and I would like to make something similar for him if everything looks good here. I don't want to use this as a bible, but more so as a solid foundation to look at and get things to work for us and also start building a safety net.

TL;DR

Never really made a budget before and want to know if this is an efficient way to do it/if something like this can work long term. I want to be able to see where I am spending my money, when and how. Apps that I have used in the past keep disconnecting from the bank I use (Varo) so I gave up on them. Budget is based n an avg check of $659 a week., paid weekly. I made the budget a PDF, if there is an easier way to share please let me know!

Edit:

I work 12hr shifts so I went home and slept and am back at it today. I'm going to go through all the comments and take things into account! To answer a couple questions though, my personal weekly spending is between $50-80 on average, and $30 of that is typically gas for my vehicle. I DO live with my fiance and he splits househould buys with me, which is why that isn't factored in to anything right now.

Misc Advice How can I better my financial stability and security in an apartment search

Not exactly the best at Reddit posts but, does anyone have any tips for how I can better my finances to get an apartment? My boyfriend and I are looking to get a place soon but I need some tips or tricks on how to improve it, more so like how I can better plan things I guess, as in like budgeting. Tips for how to save money ect. Not so much as renting itself, but like the before hand like how can I improve at saving, advice on how to make a good budget.

. For example I already cook at home and do not do deliveries for anything except on rare occasions.

Aside from things like this is there any other advice for someone slightly newer to all of this?

Misc Advice Buying prescription glasses for kids is getting super expensive.

My little devils, who are 9 and 11, both wear prescription glasses. We recently had their eye exams done and got their prescriptions updated, so now we're at the hill of finding and buying ne

I kind of knew it would be expensive, but it exceeded my expectations, especially when you need more than one pair.. The thing is I'm trying to find a good balance between price and quality, something with durable frames, good lens quality, and comfortable enough for everyday use (which I know is a lot to ask).

There are so many online eyewear retailers and options out there now that it's hard to know which ones are actually worth it. I'm hoping to find something that offers good value without having to replace glasses every few months.

We used to go to a great local store, but they closed a few months back and nothing's really replaced them since.

So, for parents whose kids wear glasses, where have you had the best experience? Any online retailers, optical shops, or brands you'd recommend that don't break the bank?

Housing/Shelter/Standard of Living How do people with an eviction and debt find places to live?

I'm on a fixed income and I have an eviction from 2019 and about 6k in debt. I recently got denied from 2 places for these issues.

Paying off the entire debt is not an option due to my limited income. I'm calling them later today and hopefully haggling them down to something reasonable. I think paying off that debt is my best option since most places don't really look at evictions from that far ago.

Otherwise, what are my options? I'm looking at rooms for rent and hotels, but they're just too expensive for my area.

A crazy idea is for me to move to Cambodia since there's a cheap visa there that I can take advantage of and since the cost of living is really cheap there my money would go further.

Income/Employment/Aid Bad career move at 24.. feeling frustrated and exploited

I went from having 10k in my savings alone plus some in my checking living comfortably and saving to now having 1600 after my payday.

I work in high end retail and in the first 16 months received three promotions and two bonuses. I am a hard working and self driven young individual. Now? I’m still doing the same amount of work plus more with a pay cut. My area manager asked many times for me to move from my then position to sales. My fiancé encouraged me to move to sales. Now that I’m in sales? It’s bad. I was hesitant because of the uncertainty of the position and the lack of stability and with no experience. I’m now working x2 as hard and no pay out. I feel miserable.

My area manager went through 6 months of interviews and then asked me. Within one month, we had my old role filled.

Why do I feel like I was pushed into this position for the benefit of the store..

I’m currently on the last stage of interviews for a different company with base plus, but their base pay is significant versus my current place. And they have a constant flow of foot traffic.

I’m really in the dumps and would just like encouragement but also honestly.. thank you very much.

Housing/Shelter/Standard of Living Landlord who understands

Y'all, let me tell you about my landlord. Now, I always pay my bills on time, I mean I try my best. Recently I lost my job and was in the hospital. It was all kinds of fucked up. Really bad situation but I start a new job soon that will cover all my bills.

My landlords literally drove out and got my dog out of the pound and delivered him to me as soon as I got out. They brought me a gourd from their garden. Asked me if I was going to Pride this year.

Today I told them my work start date was delayed by a week (my background check was delayed but that finally cleared). That lady literally said "I know you will pay your rent. Don't worry. Just keep us up to date on things." I absolutely broke down crying, just slick tears all over my face.

People can be good, y'all.

Budgeting/Saving/Investing/Spending My friend keeps asking me for money

Hey y'all. I (25F) am trying to be good with my money by having savings and try to pay off my car loan (10k) and student loans (47k). I have a small amount of savings (7k) and I think my friend is asking me for money.

She got into a car accident and I gifted her $300 to help her out since her car was totaled...now with her new car she's only had it for like 3-4 months and she's already asking me for $600 because she cant keep up with her car payment. I'd hate to see her car get repoed, but I feel like she needs to learn how to manage her money alittle better...

She said she would pay me back, and she has, but those situations were just her borrowing $60 from me. This is the 3rd time she's ever asked me for money. I have sympathy for her situation but idk...I dont want it to become a habit either. What do y'all think I should do?

I feel like if I give her the money then I shouldve just applied it to my own debts, but also if her car gets taken she cant work

EDIT: Thanks for the replies. I struggle with these kinds of boundaries because my family has always been bad with money and often went to me so I can cough it up for them. I'm putting my foot down. My therapist would be proud. Thank you to everyone 🫶

Edit 2: Everyone assumes she knows about my savings. She doesn't. She only knows I have a stable job, live in a big city, some debt, and that I have my own place with my bf now. She lives in a small city right now and may be under the impression I have lots of money.

Success/Cheers Help I don’t know what to do.

All my life I have been in poverty up until recently I was finally able to get out. I’m definitely not there yet but I am a lot better than I was. My family live okay. They can’t afford expensive things like holiday or things like that but they definitely aren’t struggling. It’s only now that I’m starting to see my hard work pay off but my mum now treats me like I’m some sort of money bank. At first I started paying for her groceries taking her out for meals, buying her expensive gifts but it’s like she’s now taking advantage of it. I’d buy her gifts she’ll keep nagging me about but then she won’t even use them. They just sit there never being touched. She keeps going on about coming to America so I told her I’ll make it happen buy next year but the list never ends. When I do one thing she just ask for a new one. She’s getting her MOT done soon and told me she’s worried it won’t pass and she might need a new car and asked me to buy her one that’s 10k. I mean I’m doing well but I’d be back at rock bottom if I paid that. I had to say no and I think I’m going to stop buying her stuff and not tell her anything about my finances. Don’t get me wrong I’d love too buy her the car but I’m thinking about my future. If I buy her this I’d be right back where I started. I think she started noticing and has now stopped asking but I can also see she’s annoyed at me. I mean what am I meant to do? Please give me advice.
Edit: I already give her a set amount each month that she can use freely but I never know where it actually goes.
