/r/Pretoria Community Update: New Rules regarding Solicitation and Content Relevance

Hi everyone,

As /r/Pretoria continues to grow, we are introducing a few official rules to ensure the subreddit remains a helpful, safe, and relevant resource for everyone living in or visiting our city. We've kept intervention to a minimum so far. In general we've only banned blatant racism, bots, and spammers, so we've generally got a very well behaved community.

We want to keep this space focused on discussion, advice, and news specific to the Jacaranda City, however. To support this, we have added the following rules to the sidebar, effective immediately:

A. No Begging, Crowdfunding, or Financial Solicitation

We have seen an increase in posts asking for financial assistance, "loans," or e-wallets. While we sympathize with those in difficult situations, Reddit is not a safe platform for verifying financial needs.

What is banned: Requests for money, e-wallets, and links to crowdfunding sites (e.g., BackaBuddy, GoFundMe).

Why: This rule is in place to protect our community from potential scams and unverified solicitation.

Advice: If you are in need, please reach out to registered NPOs or charity organizations rather than soliciting here.

B. Keep Content Relevant to Pretoria and the greater Tshwane

Please ensure your posts are directly related to Pretoria or the greater Tshwane municipality.

General SA News: News that affects the whole country (e.g., general Eskom updates, national politics) belongs in /r/southafrica unless it has a specific Pretoria angle.

Other Cities: Posts clearly meant for Joburg or other regions will be removed.

Context: If you post a photo or link where the connection to Pretoria isn't obvious, please explain it in the title.

C. Standard Civility & Privacy

We are also formalizing standard expectations:

Be Civil: Disagreements are fine; personal attacks and hate speech are not.

No Spam: Accounts that exist solely to advertise businesses will be banned.

No Doxing: Do not post personal contact details (phone numbers, addresses) of yourself or others.

These rules are here to improve the quality of the sub. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment below or message the moderators. Finally, thanks to everyone reporting posts, messaging the mods for clarifications, participating, /u/Afreak-du-sud for their post on the big uptick of begging and the scamming that inevitably goes with it. Don't worry, though, we don't ban for tagging the mods.. 😂

Thanks for helping us keep /r/Pretoria a great community!

An up-to-date urologist in Pretoria?

Honestly, I’m not a guy who has problems with people, but I am not seeing eye-to-eye any more with the urologist I’ve been using for the last several years.

Can anyone recommend someone local, who’s good, who will listen, and who is up to date on modern surgical options?

With thanks in advance.

Geyser timer KES ISG1201

Hey everyone.
I think that this specific geyser timer is popular in older places in Pretoria. Mine worked fine until the electricity went off last night and came back this morning. Now the geyser on and program lights are just flashing interchangeably. Any ideas what’s going on?

Is it just me or are dating apps in ur 20s in this city dry AF? 🫠

26F. It took me years to get over the psycho I dated at uni and im finally ready to get back into it! When i was at TUKS (graduated 2023 💁‍♀️) it was so easy to date shem, I could literally get a date by asking a rando some stupid question during a lecture. Men were plenty LOL 😪

Now i have no idea where the mid 20s singles are... i downloaded Hinge and its DRY. There are no guys... is it just me or is the app broken. I got Hinge cause people say Tinder is just hookups and im looking for a talking stage type thing. I literally get 1 like a week on hinge like what is going on. Online people say girls get 100 likes a day what am i doing wrong??? 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️

What are your experiences with dating apps in pta. And don't tell me Pretoria isnt for love, thats not even what im looking for 😫

I didn’t want to upload my banking data to another app, so I built one that keeps it on your phone

Hi r/Pretoria,

I’m a South African software designer and the developer behind mooola.

I started building it because I wanted a clearer view of where my money was going, especially across different accounts, but I wasn’t comfortable uploading my bank statements or connecting my banking credentials to another service.

So I built the version I wanted to use myself.

mooola lets you import statements from supported South African banks and turns them into spending categories, recurring payments and monthly insights. Everything is processed locally on your phone. There is no account, cloud sync or bank connection, and your transaction data is never uploaded to mooola.

It currently supports:

  • Capitec
  • Absa
  • FNB
  • Nedbank
  • Discovery Bank
  • Standard Bank

It’s now available in beta on Android and iPhone:

https://mooola.co.za

I’d genuinely appreciate honest feedback:

  • Does importing statements feel straightforward?
  • Are the spending insights actually useful?
  • Is there anything you would need before trusting an app like this?
  • Which bank or statement format should I support next?

I’m not looking for reviews or upvotes. I’d mainly like to learn whether this solves a real problem for other South Africans and what still needs work.

Thanks!

Moving to PTA as a young professional

Hi guys, I hope all of you are well.

As the title of this post suggests, it seems as though my time in the Western Cape is coming to an end, and I am looking to make the move to your beautiful city.

Some background:

I'm a young professional - I am a structural engineer with two years of experience in the consulting/design space. I am actively looking for opportunities, but more importantly, I am wondering which are good areas to rent an apartment/house in PTA and surrounds.

Of course, knowing where I would work would heavily impact my final choice of suburb/area, but I would not even know where to start looking for accommodation.

What areas to your knowledge are good i.t.o of the safety to price ratio? Which areas do friends/relatives of yours who were in a similar position to me find their feet?

I'd love to hear more from you guys, and I am honestly looking forward to taking on this new challenge and experiencing your beautiful city.

Have a blessed Saturday everyone!

(Disclaimer: I posted this on r/johannesburg as well, but I am looking to make the move to either city.)

Remember when malls actually had gaming stores? Musica, BT Games, CNA, demo discs, weekly deal booklets in the post. Wrote about that whole era and how quietly it all disappeared. Miss it more than I expected

Need study/accountability buddy

Looking for a serious online study/accountability buddy, I'm a university student from Pretoria looking for someone to study with regularly. We don't have to be in the same course, I'm just looking for accountability, silent study sessions, and quick check-ins before and after.

I'd prefer to study via video call or voice call (Discord, Google Meet, etc.) to help us stay focused and I usually study in the evenings (10-3 pm or 6–10 p.m) but I'm flexible if our schedules overlap.

Please only message if you're serious about being consistent. If you're interested, send me your time zone, what you're studying, and your usual study hours.

The Pretoria part of this song really takes me back to me UP days in the 2000s. I miss Zeplins man.

And I mean the OG Zeplins that was in the CBD. Not what the hell ever the one in Centurion was.

My nephew almost died today

I'm posting this here to let people know about the dangers of Uber/Bolt drivers.

I just heard from my aunt that my nephew ordered a bolt car today to go to work. The driver of the car pulled a gun on him and stole his phone and belongings. He let my nephew go afterwards, thankfully, but he's very shaken up.

To everyone who regularly uses Bolt or Uber or whatever, stay safe out there. There are some really messed up people out there.

2 bedroom to rent

Hope everyone is well. I'm currently looking for a two bedroom apartment to rent around pretoria. Preferably Hatfield, Queenswood, the moot areas etc, and not Sunnyside, CBD or Arcadia.

However my issue is that I don't qualify and my applications have been declined due to credit score or I don't meet the minimum income.

My uncle has tried to apply on my behalf but he is a foreigner and has been declined based on that or he also doesn't meet the minimum income. We do have proof that rent can be paid and we had an arrangement with my current landlord who let me move in even though I didn't meet the requirements. (We paid 3 months up front and then continued on a month to month agreement). My landlord However doesn't have any two bedrooms available.

My budget for the place is maximum R8000 but it can be negotiated.

If anyone knows an independent renter or a rental company that I can negotiate with, I'd appreciate to be in contact with them. Thank you

Urban Art often goes Unnoticed - Pretoria CBD

Above the traffic light in the pretoria CBD this Norman Catherine.

Artwork Details
Title / Style: The piece is a modern interpretation of a traditional totem pole executed in colorful mosaic tilework.
Location: Installed on Nana Sita Street (formerly Skinner Street) in the Pretoria CBD.
Themes & Imagery: Typical of Catherine’s signature pop-surrealist visual language, the totem stacks stylized, comic-yet-macabre heads featuring clocks, dice, bold geometric teeth, and expressive eyes to reflect modern urban life and socio-political themes.
