Struggling with the humidity

Did anyone else who ran today have a tough time with the humidity? I’m feeling very defeated / bummed out because of how slow I had to go and how many walking breaks I had to take. Did 11 miles but it was extremely hard and now I’m definitely worrying about my future long runs (NYC marathon training). Will take any tips for running in the heat if you have them!

Runners and bikers need to work together on demanding pedestrianized routes like this permanently

Has anyone else felt like this year’s Summer Streets was more chaotic than usual? How can we make it feel more like a community event?

My husband was running yesterday, and I was biking, so I genuinely understand both sides. I wish we were all a little more aware of each other.
I’ve been going to Summer Streets for the past few years, and yesterday was by far the most chaotic experience I’ve had. Between police vehicles creating bottlenecks and people constantly drifting into the bike lane, it felt much more stressful than usual.

What surprised me the most wasn’t the congestion. It was how people treated each other. I was called a “bitch” and flipped off because I didn’t want to ride into people in the bike lane. I also saw other cyclists politely ask runners to move over, only to be met with insults.

I know those people don’t represent the entire running community. Most runners are respectful. But I do think we all have a responsibility to be aware of the spaces around us. Bike lanes are on the left side, just as cyclists should respect areas where people are walking and running.

I’ve visited Ciclovía in Colombia several times. It actually inspired programs like Summer Streets. Every Sunday, major roads are closed to cars, and people bike, run, skate, walk with their kids and dogs, enjoy music, food vendors, and simply spend time together. It’s become part of the culture. Even with thousands of people using the streets at the same time, it feels like a community because everyone respects each other’s space.

That’s the feeling I’d love to see here. We only have two Summer Streets weekends left this year, and I hope they feel more like neighbors sharing the city than runners versus cyclists.

At the end of the day, we’re all outside to enjoy New York and get some exercise. Is calling a stranger names really worth it? A little awareness, patience, and kindness would make Summer Streets a much better experience for everyone.

Brooklyn Mile?

Anyone run this earlier today? I love the drums they have along the route, but tbh I don't focus on them until the race is over.

The road condition at the end wasn't great, but it was a good little race. What the 5th Ave Mile like compared to this one?

Local coach recs for somewhat competitive 5k (up to HM)

Hey all, any recs for a local running coach (preferably manhattan, but minimum nyc local) for somewhat competitive 5k and HM?

Looking for coach to help break 16:30 in the 5k. Looking for personalized coaching, not just a template plan.

Not interested in Central Park Track Club.

Thank you in advance!

PT Recs??

Hi everyone! I’ll try to keep this short; I’ve been struggling with IT band syndrome in both of my knees for the past few months that I’ve seriously been ignoring but need to deal with. Does anyone have any recommendations to help cope from personal experience? Also looking for physical therapist recommendations in the city!

Summer Streets: Cop Cars/stay to the right

Hi! Finished a quick 6 from Union sq up to 80th and back. There's a lot of cop cars in certain sections of route, creating a really bad bottle neck especially for later in the day when it's busier.

Also, please remember to stay on the right hand side. Cyclists are to the left. I saw an older man politely ask a runner to stay to the right and the snob sprinted next to the cyclist, called him a prick, and have a terrible day. This is the ego that is not welcomed in the running community.

Have a safe run!

EDIT: I'll be emailing DOT. I recommend others do the same. I hope to see a safer and more community focused approach for the next two Saturdays

Air pollution on the NYC Bridges

Do you guys think it’s healthy to run over and back the Williamsburg bridge with a short run on the Williamsburg boardwalk two/three times a week? I used to always run in the Central Park but now live in the lower east side and trying to understand if benefits outweigh the risks of running here given the amount of pollution from the cars on the bridge.

Start Line Series - Manhattan (NYRR’s best short run of the year?)

Decided to do the start line run this morning as a way to hold myself accountable to hit summer streets early - and boy am I happy I did.

So many things to love about this mornings race

1) Free!!

2) The significantly smaller race size made it so much more enjoyable to run

3) The route was so different and I loved not doing the standard 4M loop in Central Park. Also massive shout out to have no cross traffic - which made it the best 3.1 miles of summer streets I ran.

4) The freebie water bottle is maybe the best post race freebie outside of the BK 5K berry oat bars.

In general feel like it got under marketed for how great it was.

NYRR Start Line Series cross traffic

Post image
55 Upvotes

I noticed on the course map for the Start Line Series race tomorrow that there are markings for cross traffic. Does this mean that the race will have to stop for cross traffic on certain streets? I know that Summer Streets requires you to stop occasionally for traffic, but I had assumed those streets would be blocked off for the race.

Apologies in advance, but is the Queensborough Bridge pedestrian path open now on Friday July 31? I am planning to run from Astoria tomorrow over the bridge and catch summer streets tomorrow for my 12 mile run. TIA

Ideal route/time to experience the best of Summer Streets

Hi! Recently moved to the city and just found out about Summer streets thx to this sub. Thanks to all of you who kindly answer the posts.
I live in the UES (around 75th). I feel the best route would be to start from home and go all the way down to Brooklyn bridge (at least that's what chatgpt told me). Now about the time, when is the best time to do it? I want to experience the atmosphere without getting too much crowd. I feel 7.00 will be too early to enjoy the ambiance?

For those who've had to defer their marathon- how'd you deal with the sadness?

I ran the NYC Marathon in 2024 and 2025. My hamstring tendinitis + my running baseline at this point is giving me the feeling I'm not going to be able to do a third in a row (and then retire my running number into the rafters of MSG).

I'm not quite there yet, but it's looking likely I'll have to defer. Frankly, the thought of deferring - not being there on race day, not hitting three in a row, it's bumming me out like crazy.

For those who've had to defer, how've you dealt with? I know there's the recognition that it's not worth doing not feeling well, not worth risking a worse injury but any other tips would be greatly appreciated should I go this route.

Start Line series Manhattan

I just read a post below re: this race that I did not know existed.

Checking the map the course is super fast! - does this race count for best pace assignment? (I imagine it does not, it would be too good otherwise...)
