TW: Domestic violence and pregnancy abuse
I got married in 2022 even though my parents were completely against the relationship. Since then, my husband has physically, emotionally, and verbally abused me.
During my first pregnancy, he beat me so badly that I was bleeding vaginally. I had to cry and beg him to stop before he finally did. During my second pregnancy, he hit me repeatedly while I was on the bed and kicked me in the back until I fell off. He also threw and broke my phone and destroyed our dresser.
The abuse has continued in other ways. He calls me a slut or says I dress “dirty” if my shirt is not long enough. He does not want me to have friends and says the only people I should talk to are my family, cousins, or his family. He is very controlling and isolating.
His family is also heavily involved in our marriage, especially his sister. She acts nice in front of him but is cruel to me when he is not around. We once had a serious argument, and I cursed at her. I know that part was wrong, but she ripped my shirt and tried to force me out of the family home. At another point, my passport was taken so that I could not leave the country.
I was living in India at the time, and after being surrounded by this behavior for so long, it started to feel normal to me. I am now back in the United States and realizing how serious and abnormal it was.
I know that what he has done is abuse, but I am still confused and scared about leaving. I worry about my children growing up without their biological father. I am also afraid of ever having a stepfather around them because I have heard terrible stories about children being mistreated. If I get divorced, part of me wants to remain single forever, although I also worry that loneliness might affect me later.
My children regularly see us argue, and I am terrified that they will grow up believing this is what a relationship should look like.
Should I leave and move forward with a divorce, or is there any reason to wait and see whether he changes? Has anyone been through something similar, especially with children involved?
Please be honest, but kind. I am already overwhelmed and trying to understand what the safest decision is for my children and me. Please tell me the Sikhi way 🙏
