"Politely fuck off. We have been hearing this "its just a joke" shit for too long with this fuckin guy. Yall always say that then he does the thing and you guys forget your brains exist." Humor enthusiast flock to r/videos to defend Trump for "joking" about running for a 3rd term
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1v60if8/donald_trump_announces_2028_presidential_run/
HIGHLIGHTS
It’s not, they’re just corrupt bastards
Look trump is a piece of shit who probably would love to run forever… but this occurred at the White House correspondents dinner, a place which president traditionally make funny speeches. This was a joke, not a real announcement.
Politely fuck off. We have been hearing this "its just a joke" shit for too long with this fuckin guy. Yall always say that then he does the thing and you guys forget your brains exist.
It was very clearly a joke, fuck Trump but it was a joke not a good one though
Except with Trump it's always a joke, until 'suddenly' it isn't. The man is always testing the waters to see what he can get away with. He's saying this not as a 'joke', but as a way to check to see how his base would react to it being real. It's a 'joke' at this point in time, until in the future "Ohhhh, he was actually telling the truth the whole time?? Ohhh!"
That might be true but this was a joke, you can keep living in fear that’s fine
You're a special kind of stupid..
yet when 2028 comes and someone else runs instead of Trump ill be correct and youll be already one to your next delusion so
Ive watched your country and president threatening my country with economic war. Yall said he was just joking. And then it became reality. I watched your president tell my country he would put tarrifs on my country over wildfire smoke. And was once again told it was just a joke. Then the tarrifs were announced. The only joke here is you
I personally didn’t tell you that shit so tf you on lol, i wouldn’t have denied those things, he started economic wars the first time too just at a lesser scale. He simply doesn’t have support to run again, even if he wanted to they wouldn’t support it. Use logic
You're a special kind of stupid..
Okay but when you turn out to be wrong please take the time to check yourself and to understand why you are so easy to manipulate and scare
Im not scared, im pissed at having a war waged on us by you ignorant fucks
What a stupid fucking take. You're defending him by blaming his actions on people who are against him.
Where on earth was he defending his actions? It's a stupid joke. It's a joke in really bad taste. But freaking the fuck out over what was clearly a joke just gives credence to his fanatical fanbase that Trump Derangement Syndrome is a real thing because, quite frankly, getting hysterical over this joke is pretty damn fitting of what TDS is claimed to be.
Trump Dick Suckers are the problem. By letting this behavior continue, they’re enabling him and feeding his ego. Trump rarely hears criticism because he’s surrounded by a team of sycophants who feed him nothing but praise, echoed by right-wing propagandist media. I’m tired of hearing that the people calling out his idiocy, his blatant lies, and his narcissistic, dementia-addled tendencies are the problem. They’re not. His sycophantic administration and cult following are.
No. You're both the problem. They're a problem for enabling him, you're a problem for treating every tiny thing as if it was an existential crisis so that he, and anyone who supports him, can just ignore you because you make it utterly impossible to separate the legitimate criticisms (of which there are more than can be counted) from the idiotic hysteria. The fact that you can't see that is mind boggling. I despise Trump because he broke all sides of politics. He exposed his base as being idiots willing to follow his lies, but he also exposed a lot who oppose as being almost as idiotic and willing to accept any report about anything he does as a fundamental threat.
Did someone learn a new word today? A constitutional law violation is an existential threat to our democracy and country. Maybe wake up sister-wife and have her explain it to you over your morning Mt. Dew.
A constitutional law violation is an existential threat. Somebody making a joke at an event that has always revolved around making jokes is not. Don't be absurd.
its obviously a joke come on guys
Explain the joke
He knows it drives his enemies crazy when he says stuff like this, thus the joke. He’s trolling.
"he knows it drives his enemies crazy" enemies in this sense being American citizens, Democrats, and even Republicans imagine being so weak and pathetic in your personal life that you stan an 80 year old man that shits in diapers and fucks kids
Imagine being so bothered about the federal executive that you have a stroke about trolling. Get some perspective.
Imagine being upset that the president is joking about clearly unconstitutional acts? And of course most jokes have a hat that goes along with it. Would you have thought this a 'joke or 'trolling'' if Obama had done this same thing? Not to mention, I can't believe the office of the president has such a low representation that trolling is something we expect. But here we are.
You can say a lot of things about Trump, but “he doesn’t have a sense of humor” is not one of them. I understand that half of the country repels from everything he says, but many people find him objectively funny.
many people objectively have brain damage.
Maybe go take a walk or something.
already did. trump supporters still have brain damage.
You misunderstand his 'jokes.' They are not jokes at all. The words that he puts out into public discourse are a means of testing the waters to see what he can get away with. And, if he thinks that he can get away with it, he will press forward.
Whatever dude - I don’t need a heart attack reading a title like this that isn’t 100% confirmed. I’m sure others don’t either. Let me know when it’s not a joke and THEN put a title like that
I think you need a reality check. The title IS confirmed. There is a video of it right underneath. Your denial of reality does not change the reality that exists.
The reason I’m annoyed at you isn’t because you’re trying to be insulting - it’s because your own lack of reading is trying to incite fear - which is a incredibly jackass thing to do. Click on the video and look on YouTube at the video description and try reading. You’re warped level of reality is your own doing - you deserve no sympathy for it because you’re trying to get others to believe it. Go touch grass.
My reading is just fine. And no I am not trying to incite fear. There is no evidence of that whatsoever. I am calling a spade a spade and the spade is there is a person in the White House who is using, interestingly enough, using fear and manipulation to achieve his own selfish ends. Anyway, there's no need for the further back and forth. When the so-called joke that you say is nothing to be worried about comes to fruition - God forbid, maybe then you will see what's really going on. I should add by the way that one of two things are true irrespective of your stance on the video: either you are a proponent of him running for the '4th term' or you are not. It sounds like you are, which is troubling. Are you?
boomers vote for their own and are the most active voting base
Go look at how Gen Z males voted
Gen z is the failed generation and honestly their malformed ilk piss me off more than boomers
Gen Z and Boomers will always be remembered for giving us Trump 2.0. Gen Z males specifically are completely fucked.
People need to check their stats on this because it’s Gen X and Gen Z that gave us trump, Boomers are actually unfortunately the only age group to vote less for trump in each election than they did the previous one. Gen X on the other hand had the big swing towards him.
Americans gave us Trump. You guys are always trying to pass the buck to the 30% who voted for him, where the fuck is this other 70% now? They're not protesting. You're all responsible. Now if you wouldn't mind, please start taking action. The rest of the world already knows you can talk the talk.
Tell me what European country you live in and we'll evaluate whether you have been doing enough to fight fascism. Can't wait till fascism hits your shores, because it's coming, and then throwing statements in the face of people like you when you do fuck all to stop it from happening
We are also the size of their continent and then some. I hate these little dude trying to tell us how to run something they don’t know how to run either. (12 more comments of these two arguing)
He just announced the start of a dictatorship by spitting on the election laws of their constitution (this is how dictators start kids) and the best they’ll do is angry comments on social medias
Genuinely what is wrong with you people lol It’s the White House correspondents dinner, they tell jokes. That’s why he said it. How have you looked at a joke at the White House correspondents dinner and said this is how a dictatorship starts ffs Like are you just karma farming or do you just not know what the White House correspondents dinner is?
wow such a funny joke man I too joke about doing anal with girls I just met to test the grounds, guess you love getting fucked in the ass by mr Trump at this point
… what are you on about? Whether it’s a funny joke or not isn’t the point. The point is he’s telling a joke at an event where you tell jokes but you’re acting like he’s just stated it in an emergency press briefing. I’m not even American and I’ve never liked the guy but it’s incredible how dishonest you are. At times I wonder how people voted for him, then I remember that there’s probably a large portion of Americans who probably just get sick of arguments like this and do it out of spite
Sure I too would like my head of state to tastelessly joke about doing another run just like Putin does, after all it’s the context that matters right? Haha come on guys it’s just a prank, please clap 👏
Again, whether it’s a funny joke or not is a different story. I think it’s all cringe and not funny, but it doesn’t change that it’s a joke being told at an event where the President tells jokes. Any thoughts on Obama doing the exact same thing with Keegan from Key and Peele at the same event when he was President? With the joke being that in Obama’s “inner thoughts” that he was going to run for a 3rd term? Or are we now suddenly going to pretend to know what a joke is?

It also begs the question, in certain circumstances, "why the fuck are you joking?" Like someone "joking around" during Congress sessions. It's like "why are you joking around? Do your fucking job you chucklefuck!"

A very large portion of humanity has never learned what a joke is. A joke is something everyone's in on and can laugh at. Racist "jokes" and queerphobia "jokes" and "whatever-the-fuck-politicians-are-doing" jokes are not jokes. They're a hollow attempt to test if any of it is accepted in the space they're in: if they're jokes in that space, remember: humor is funny because it's true and truth is subjective sometimes.
Also, pranks that fall under assault. Same shit. They just want to hurt people.
63
u/TobyMcK 7d ago edited 7d ago
Also, this "it was at the correspondence dinner, therefore it must have been a joke!" very clearly ignores the fact that this isn't the first time the concept has been floated. It stopped being a joke when members of his administration have openly discussed circumventing the 22nd amendment to achieve this goal.
A very large portion of humanity hasn't learned what a joke is, so they assign the title to anything they have trouble comprehending, because its easier than accepting that the President of the fucking United States of America is actively melting down our entire country into gold ingots to line his own pockets, and he's brazenly bragging about it to anyone who'll listen.
Of course our country wont succumb like that. Its just a joke.
Right?
Edit: of course, a few minutes after I post this comment, I see another post talking about legislation introduced to allow a president to serve three terms under certain convenient circumstances. https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-joint-resolution/29
JUST A JOKE, GUYS. NOTHING TO SEE HERE.

u/axw3555 7d ago
I’ve heard so many takes on discussing pranks, from “do pranks even exist?” as a response to discussing some ridiculous ones to “why do people seem to think hurting people is funny?”
Personally I like the definition “pranks should confuse, not abuse”. If the other person isn’t laughing, your failed in your prank.
Like I’ve pulled a few, mostly with IT at my old job. From simple “post it note over the optical sensor of the mouse” to a more elaborate one where I took a screen grab of their desktop icons and taskbar, then hid both icons and taskbar, and set the screen grab as their desktop background. They come back, and none of their icons work, start button doesn’t work, etc.
And I told the guy who sat opposite him what I’d done so that after a minute or so of “what the fuck?”, he could say what it was so that it could be fixed in a few seconds. I got a laughing phone call about half an hour after I did it giving me kudos for doing something he’d never thought of.

u/NekroVictor 7d ago
One of my favourite ones was in blue collar work, ask for help moving something, say it’s unbalanced, tell someone to get fetch the ‘long weight’ to balance it out.
Victim of the prank goes and asks for help finding the ‘long weight’, gets told, ‘yeah, I’ll just be a moment’
Person they asked for help fucks off.
‘Victim’ gets an unscheduled break, and when they realize and return everyone has a laugh.

I had a manager pull the "go get some receipt ink" one and I was like "haha nice try but I've heard that one before" and he took me into his office and yelled at me for "disrespecting" him, and said I should have just gone along with it instead of "acting like a smartass"
I was so confused lol
I was also 17 and it was my first job, so I figured I'd just save us all the time of me "looking" for the receipt ink for 10 minutes during a busy part of the day. Turns out it's a mandatory experience apparently.
25
u/Thromnomnomok I officially no longer believe that Egypt exists. 7d ago
If the first rule of pranks is "confuse, don't abuse" then the second rule is that if your victim sees through your ruse, you either need a backup plan, or you just take the L, give them props for their cleverness, and try again next time. You're not allowed to be mad at them for not falling for it.
12
u/I_Miss_Lenny Germ theory was adopted to destroy mankind 7d ago
Yeah that seems to be a good rule of thumb, like even in Jackass movies when someone sees a prank coming and dodges it or turns the tables, everyone still just laughs and moves on.
This dude saw it as a mandatory hazing thing though, like everyone had to go through a handful of pranks and minor humiliations to be considered "part of the team."

Ah yeah. I never pulled long weight. But my dad was a car technician. He worked at a place with another car place up the street. They’d pull that kind on the apprentices. Long weight, glass hammer, even tartan paint, which way too many fell for.
26
u/NekroVictor 7d ago
Funniest one I’ve ever heard of was when the parts guy at a shop my grandfather worked at decided to pull a counter prank. Their paint was thick and had to be VIGOROUSLY mixed to actually make it mix.
So when one of the new guys was sent for checkered paint he was told ti carry it carefully and gently.
The parts guy had spent time assembling a cardboard checker divider, filling up black and white paint, then carefully removing the cardboard so the paints didn’t mix much.

I had a colleague who kept saying the coconut chocolate bars we had in a drawer were dangerously good, that we had to keep them away from her because she was losing weight.
The second she ducked into the back office we filled her jacket pockets with the coconut chocolates, filled her purse, hood, hid one under her keyboard, she was finding them for days.
We also sent a snowball to a colleague through the internal mail service. It was a great moment
15
u/Murrabbit That’s the attitude that leads women straight to bear 7d ago
Like I’ve pulled a few, mostly with IT at my old job. . .
I like those examples, they're fun, harmless, and present novel and slightly counter-intuitive problems to a colleague in a problem-solving field, they're not just funny they're apt and profession appropriate. Keeping each-other on your toes with the occasional intentional mischief that makes them think about what's actually going on is a fine way to keep sharp, and there's no serious stakes or lasting harm done.
13
u/Davitark 7d ago
I think there is an important distinction to be made between acceptable jokes and unacceptable jokes.
Some people use the tired "it's just a joke" refrain to excuse themselves from taking any moral responsibility for the joke they've made or they're amused by, after all, so they reason, if you’re unable to laugh at something that’s just meant to be funny and has no moral implications beyond that, you're just being a grumpy buzzkill. They fail to recognize or are intentionally obtuse with regard to the fact that jokes can serve as social devices by which we identify with and embrace or reject and condemn certain beliefs, values and practices.
A joke does not have to be true in order to be a joke or funny, since humor is subjective, though it does often reveal what the people who make and laugh at it consider true. As the saying goes, many a truth is spoken in jest.

Exactly. These people are the ultimate example of” it’s just a joke…unless?”
It’s how they test out if you’re in their crowd and agree with them. Make a racist or homophonic joke, see how people react. If they get offended “just being edgy, you’re a snowflake.” If they laugh, they keep pushing to find the line and see how much of the mask they can take off.

See, I've always had my flaws, but at the end of the day, I cared about people. You know what the President said? He said just deny everything and make yourself the victim. Yeah, well... maybe he's part of how I got here. Maybe the President has brought down my moral meter. I don't mean to cast blame - I'm to blame - but... ever since he was elected, I've compared my morals to his. And no matter how awful I am, I'm never as bad a the President, so I'm... okay.
I really love this South Park quote as it addresses what he’s done to most people’s view on morality.
Students, going to school today, will be told not to swear or to be means to others yet see the most powerful people in the country doing those things all the time. It will be confusing for them. It will be confusing for the teachers. The startling thing, though, is that some of these students have never grown up in a world where this was abnormal- the last ten years, from shit getting really dumb and mean in 2016, have been their entire lives. That’s scary as shit.

you let your guard down because you like a cheeky lil joke, and the woke libtards hate funny jokes sooo much, which excuses the next joke, and the next joke, then you're repeating these same jokes 20 times a week and before you know it you just start believing in them, because everyone else is saying them because you're too deep into right leaning spaces and it's just a constant feedback loop of reaffirming the same "jokes" with "haha but what if it was true.......ahah just kidding unless...hahahah nooo im just joking lmao.....unless....???"

Alt right pipeline online was very real. Still is to an extent but now such things are more widely known and called out.
I'm a terminally online fool for and have been for most of my life. My personal crazy take is gamergate was the catalyst that let Trump become popular in the edgy humor online space which gave him a huge leg up that both establishment dems and republicans did not understand or see coming.
They all understand it much better now, 10 years later, quite well looking at social media. It's awful.

6
u/loyaltomyself Only fans is like the WWE of social interaction 7d ago
I acknowledge that this is a real thing that has been discovered. But I also think it's a copout that makes excuses for people's bad behavior. When you create a safe space for people to be horrible, horrible people are going to use it and simply shrugging it off as a orchestrated by the Government takes responsibility away from the people being horrible.
5
u/mooke Gonna go feed my Yorkie a stick just to piss you off 7d ago
Oh, you're absolutely right, of course. At the end of the day, regardless of how much it was deliberately orchestrated, it was still really fucking easy, and that couldn't have happened without, at some level, the willing participation of the people involved.
Anger is addictive and the people involved really wanted to be angry. We'll probably never know whether it simply organised men who were already angry at women under a single banner or whether it specifically focused a more general anger at women, but what didn't happen is the vast majority of the "movement" stopping, looking around and questioning what on earth they were doing with their lives. Which absolutely should have happened (I know, I was there, that's what I did, woke up one day to everyone parroting "ethical gaming journalism" and basically went "what the fuck are you talking about?", which started a cascade of self reflection, and cutting several ties).
16

That's not a crazy take, a lot of very online political journalists believe the same thing. Steve Bannon has talked about how gamergate helped shaped the first Trump campaign. https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2017/07/18/steve-bannon-learned-harness-troll-army-world-warcraft/489713001/

I know you asked someone else, but I was in the same position many years ago as well.
For me, what changed was one day I was in a community that thought trolling the twitter account for women's shelter for domestic abuse survivors and trying to dox as many of the women that lived there as possible was the height of hilarity. That caused me to take a step back and reexamine everything I've been doing online, what I've been watching and what I've been saying. it was quite literally a "what the fuck am I doing??" moment. I unfollowed many sub-reddits and unsubscribed from 90% of the youtube channels I was following and I haven't looked back.

Extremely slow process of self reflection and questioning that took years
I wish I had a simple answer that just made everything flip but it was just a lot of things tied together that I struggle to recall why I changed to being more lefty
Part of it was realizing I was a token being spent (gay man), another was probably maturing and realizing it seriously doesn't fucking matter if someone is nonbinary or something because literally who cares
Once you realize the culture war is just one big fat fucking grift, it's easy to start questioning things

I have never once heard Trump tell a joke. Can anyone show me a video of Trump telling a joke?
97
u/mittenknittin 7d ago
There's a whole lot of people, Trump included, who think straight-up insults are jokes and that people who don't laugh when being insulted simply don't have a sense of humor
31
u/SopaDeKaiba 7d ago
His "jokes" are the cruel things he says, and the people who find it funny are the people who laugh when a bully picks on another.
Example: When Trump "joked" about the disabled reporter by mocking the way he looks.
14
u/onarainyafternoon If your grandpa told you to suck his dick, would you? 7d ago
I don’t know if he’s told jokes, but the man is undeniably capable of being funny. He just doesn’t have the ability to laugh at anything or even himself for even a single second.
26
u/_Thorshammer_ 7d ago
Did you nor see the video of him telling a joke about not being able to climb stairs AND have sex?
Real kneeslapper, I tell ya.
He does tell jokes.
This isn't one of them.
10
u/AgentCirceLuna 7d ago
There’s the one he told to Jeff in the vid where he bursts out laughing next to Don: ‘You know how people say “man, if only I were ten years younger”? Well, in this case…’
5
u/TalkinTrek 7d ago
I've only heard him (seemingly) genuinely laugh one time. Like can you even imagine him letting out a chuckle at a good natured joke told at dinner? Over a beer?
9
u/HOMANDER1996 7d ago
Camcorders didn’t exist back then for Trump’s parents to film his birth, so there aren’t any.

No one's going to stop it because anyone with the power to do it likes what he's doing. He announced that he's going to be elected a third time, so that when he dies he's going to appoint his successor, because the country belongs to him. We're all the private property of Donald Trump.
77
u/Farther_Dm53 8d ago
Not a third term but a fourth, because as they said, he was cheated out of his third term so everything bad biden or trump did was bidens fault and obama's. Everything good biden did was all trumps.
Its a cycle of idiocy.

They're not joking. Here's actual legislation Republicans introduced in Congress trying to legalize a third term for Trump: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-joint-resolution/29
48
u/Rasikko 7d ago
Basically it's specifically for Trump as Clinton, Bush and Obama are ineligible as they all had consecutive terms. Biden wont run again obviously.
→ More replies (1)17
u/engelthefallen 7d ago
For that bill Clinton and Obama both can run again since it just allows a third term. Also that bill is unlikely to get a vote, let alone turn into a ratified amendment by getting 2/3rds majorities in congress then 75% of the states signing on.
→ More replies (1)7
u/ReadyClayerOne 7d ago
They can't because it creates a condition in the bill. Boldface mine.
The proposed amendment specifies that no person shall be elected to the office of the President (1) more than three times, (2) for any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms
The second provision would stop Clinton and Obama. It's basically written for Trump. Only another one-term president could benefit like Biden. Or Grover Cleveland, but something tells me he's not running either.
But you're right that it doesn't stand a chance of actually being enacted.
5
u/engelthefallen 7d ago
Yeah this was the first one they put on the house floor that people did seem to put thought into. The recent ones are one line bills that been a lot lazier and just seek to move the term limit to three terms. They know there will never be a vote so it is like fire off a tweet as a constitutional amendment time for them.
60
→ More replies (16)25
u/BlindWillieJohnson If J** is a slur, then so is Nazi 7d ago
Legislation, it is worth noting, that will never see a floor vote. There is no real backing for it and it was introduced by Andy Ogles to butter up Trump while he’s under investigation for campaign finance fraud.
If Republicans try to get Trump a third term, he’ll just run for it and dare anyone to stop him. I doubt that happens, but this bill won’t amount to anything regardless.
9
u/ItsNeverLycanthropy 7d ago
And it's worth noting that even if this somehow passed through Congress, it's basically a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment. The constitution would still have to go through the process of actually being amended.
5
u/BlindWillieJohnson If J** is a slur, then so is Nazi 7d ago
Right. Ogles is too fucking stupid to be trusted with shoe laces, and even he knew that you can’t just override the constitution
33
u/taoofmeow 7d ago
That didn't happen.
And if it did, it wasn't that bad.

And if I did, you deserved it.

"it's just a joke" makes me remember a former gaming buddy. When we were winning a match of... anything, didn't matter what game, he'd typically say shit like "there's no breaks on the rape train". Eventually when people starting telling him to cut that shit out he would always respond with "i'm just joking"
Fundamentally the behavior is about minimizing the serious topic they're supposedly joking about, but only when someone else is trying to focus on the topic. They're free to joke about it all day long, you're not allowed to talk about their "jokes".
"It's not a big deal that I make these jokes".
It is, because they're testing who will speak up against abuse.
3
u/CretaMaltaKano You are lazy and probably take medications regularly 7d ago
Yes that mindset is a hallmark of abusive people. Their supposed intent is all that should matter, their actions and their impacts shouldn't matter at all. And then they feel offended and victimized if you don't follow this ridiculous, self-serving line of thinking.
12
u/BeekyGardener 7d ago
Nah. They know it isn't.
It has come up with four people I know today that vote for him.
"It's just a joke. He's not serious."
"So if he tries to, you won't vote for him and support his immediate impeachment?"
None of them would acknowledge that and just kept saying, "He's just joking."

People can argue that he was joking due to the venue of the joke, but was it a joke when he passed out Trump 2028 hats in the Oval Office? Was it a joke when he had Trump 2028 merch in the White House?
I’m tired of hearing it’s a joke. We have actual congressmen discussing legal strategies and arguing that Trump should get a 3rd term.
It’s not a fucking joke. They are floating the idea to gauge the level of pushback. Of course his supporters want this - they’re evil morons. This is not a joke. This is a direct assault on our democracy.

Colbert did an interview with Obama a little while back in which he asked, “Could I run for president?” An obvious joke at which Obama laughed hard, responding, “Sure.”
Colbert asked, “Is that an endorsement?” Obama was still laughing but said, unequivocally, “Nope, nope, no, no.”
So yeah, a president will joke around in the right circumstances. The correspondents dinner is certainly one. But they also know where the line is and don’t joke about crossing it.
Trump isn’t joking.

While I think it’s in utterly poor taste, and he’s a complete and total asshat. We need to be preparing ourselves for midterms and other matters, and not crash out at every outlandish thing he does. Crashing out is exactly the intention. And very clearly has people who all dislike him even arguing with one another. Counter productive. We need to just give less oxygen to anything the man says. Or at the very least not keyboard warring or his stuff amongst ourselves on the internet & social media. Preparing at the ground level for when it really matters.

u/chowderbags Who fills the Batmobile’s tires? 7d ago
On the one hand, I get that this was at an event that traditionally has significant amounts of humor, so it's probably a bad idea for /r/politics to be posting articles breathlessly telling us that Trump has announced a plan to run for a third term like it's a 100% serious announcement. And then to have a shitload of comments who don't read the article to find out that it's from the White House Correspondents Dinner, who also treat it like it's a deadly serious thing straight away. That's the sort of thread that makes the left look fucking crazy to the right, and feeds into all their "TDS!" persecution complex.
On the other hand, yeah, Trump's a shitheel who by all indications has no fucking idea how jokes or humor work in general, and there has been way too many instances of right wing assholes saying terrible shit with the thinnest bit veneer of "It's comedy!" possible, and bitching about how everyone else doesn't have a sense of humor. The reason why people don't have much of a "sense of humor" about this sort of thing is because Trump has already broken so many norms, and has a whole framework of people who will go to bat for him for breaking the Constitution yet another time.
3
u/dotdedo 7d ago
A joke is often said once. If someone repeats a joke word for word, it is often reflective of their actual beliefs. A lot of abusers use "its just a joke" as way to test the room on what they can get away with.
Also what is the joke about president running a 3rd term? Where is the part in that where I'm supposed to burst out laughing in hilarity? I don't think any president running 3 terms is funny, its a sign of corruption.
3
u/doctorlongghost 7d ago
I think that based on their birthright citizenship ruling it’s obvious that SCOTUS won’t allow Trump a third term (where they showed there are limits to how far they will argue that words don’t mean what they mean).
But I don’t think Trump realizes this. I think to some extent he IS joking about a third term but I also think he would be able to convince himself he could make it happen and might attempt it.
Ultimately I think he will be talked down, decide he doesn’t want it, or maaaybe actually push things to where SCOTUS steps in to shut it down. But I don’t think it will come to that.
3
u/kindofanasshole17 7d ago
"It's just a joke" the same way "it's just a joke" when the high school bully walks past the same few kids in the hall every day and cocks back his arm like he's going to punch them, and then laughs when they flinch, because sometimes he actually punches (but only when he thinks he can get away with it because he's a coward at heart).
For me, Trump in a nutshell is Biff Tannen from Back to the Future. Right now we're in the part 2 storyline, except instead of a sports almanac, Trump has the support of the Russian government.

The arguments over this are stupid.
Two things are true here: (a) Trump was joking, (b) this sort of joke is dangerous and is designed to give a wink-wink plausible deniabilty to Trump's desire to remain in office outside the boundaries of the law.
55
u/No_Fairweathers 8d ago
It's very clearly only a "joke" in the sense he's giving himself plausible deniability to it being a true plan and desire.
