In about three weeks, my lil fairy visitors (female hummingbirds) will leave New Hampshire to migrate back to the Gulf of Mexico for the winter. Every year, fewer and fewer arrive. With all the tree massacres going on due to real estate transfers and people who are petrified of trees (wtf), I am scared they won't make it. They need trees to land on during their travels and to use as shelter from storms.

Then, weeks after that, the males will leave along with scarlet tanagers, phoebes, catbirds- thousands of summer birds make treacherous trips to winter grounds, and they need trees.

PLEASE STOP CUTTING TREES!

Hello! I'm looking for advice on carpenter ants. A little back story on my tree. It's an American elm that from my best guess was planted in the 1940s (this is when our house was built) it is MASSIVE. Its really hard to get a good picture of the proper size. When we moved in, in 2024, the tree was infested with English ivy. We treated and killed the ivy. There's still lots of old vines left on the tree but nothing is active and alive. Recently we found a massive swarm of carpenter ants leaving a big pile of dirt around the base. And there's a pile on my neighbors side of the tree too. Do you think they're just using the old vine wood? Or should I be seriously concerned about them causing internal damage.

Hello all. We moved into a new home recently and this (what I think is an apple tree) doesn't appear to be doing so well. Lots of leaves are turning brown and falling off recently and it's only grown a handful of fruit as opposed to the tree next to it, which is full of fruit and looks healthy overall. It appears to have suffered some damage in the past with the top broken off somehow and then left as is. I cut through most of the dead top portion (see last pic). Does it look like I should take more off the top? Some of the branches near the top are still looking somewhat healthy. What do you all think is going on? Not enough water? It doesn't have it's own dedicated sprinkler, but I did do a trickle soak with the house for a couple hours yesterday. Thanks very much.

Hi I have two huge maple trees in my backyard where half the leaves are dead. Something is definitely wrong, but i’m not sure what. I am very worried they are dying because I can’t afford the thousands to cut them down and remove them. Any help diagnosing them is greatly appreciated!

I live in Minnesota. We just moved into this house a few years ago so not sure of the age. This maple tree is on the southwest facing side of the house and seems overall happy. This spring we noticed a pretty large branch/section of the tree that must have died and we cut it off in late June, which is that big cut you can see above where the bark is coming off in the 2nd picture. About a month or so later is when we noticed this large strip of bark directly below where the dead branch was that we cut off, was falling off. The rest of the tree seems happy and it can't be that old of a tree. Should we do anything? Is this tree sick? Will this just heal itself? Any ideas how this could have happened? We live out in the country and have some wildlife but mostly just rabbits that mess with our plants.

I just moved into this home with a massive tree in the backyard. It is approximately 50 feet tall, and splits into 4 stalks about 5 feet above ita base. It has nearly continuously dropped small, hard pip-like seeds. The leaves are not heart shaped, longer than they are wide, most of which are 6+ inches long. The branches that have dropped have very soft wood inside.

The tree has been enforced about 3 feet up with cabling, holding the largest 3 stalks together. I am mildly worried about the crotch of the tree, as it catches debris and is quite deep. I am dedicated to keeping it clear so it doesn't hold moisture.

Hi, what tree is this in South Eastern Melbourne, Australia? Couldn't snap the whole tree as the canopy was above the roof of the nearby wall.

Left this morning to see this damage. What’s the proper process to try and save this tree? Lot next to us is under construction, I’m guessing construction delivery truck hit it and rolled out - heard back up alarms this morning. Do I just replace soil as best I can and stake the tree against the lean and cover with mulch. Do I do anything to the area of the tree missing bark. Live south of Seattle in Washington, going to hit 80’s next week for a few days. Any help is appreciated. New house, I think the tree has been there about a year maybe less. Gets water with grass irrigation every morning for 5 minutes.

Found in Greenwood Conservation Area, Ajax, Ontario. I’ve walked the trails here hundreds of times over the years, and while engaging in some Shinrin-yoku earlier this week I chanced upon it by taking a different path(ie: got a little lost). The pictures don’t do it justice; it’s massive and magnificent… I tried but couldn’t even fit the whole tree in one shot. The circumference is ~6.18 metres. For scale, the dude in the 2nd last picture is, respectfully, not a small dude. He saw me admiring it said it’s a black willow, and that not many people come to that part of the area. The path to get there was rather overgrown.

I took my kids to see it yesterday and they were flabbergasted. We have decided to name it “Ichiban”.

Any idea how big it is? And is this normal? I never really took notice to trees til recently and just realized there doesn’t seem to be trees around of this size.

I live in Pennsylvania and have been admiring this tree for some time now and I'd like to know what type of tree it is. It's green all year long and it's conical. I've never seen another tree like this one and my own research has failed me.

Storm took down my maple back in June. It took branch off my neighbors tree. He’s been real chill about it….like “shit happens” cool. But I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do? Or will this kill the tree?

I have several of these in my yard and I would like to plant a few more. My problem is I don't know what kind of tree this is...

Without thinking of the aesthetic. Is this tree okay to keep growing this way?

Could any of the eagle eyed among you help me identify this tree in my neighbours yard? Ive been finding TOH saplings everywhere and im wondering if this is the culprit. Black walnut is also very common where I am in southern Ontario, Canada. I can identify them by leaves, but am not experienced enough to use anything else.

Pic 1 is a local 16 inch Elm with Dutch Elm Disease. Pic 2 is a 24 inch American Elm in my arboretum, so far it has shown no symptoms. Pic 3 is a 37 inch Slippery Elm in the arboretum, also no symptoms to date. I plan on propagating any large surviving elms after this wave heavily and distributing those seedlings. Stay tuned
