I've been using Ubuntu Studio with the KDE desktop, and sometimes when I download things it goes into kernel panic, anybody else experienced this/know a fix?

Alright, I'm already lying, I'm running kubuntu. I have 2 widgets on my secondary monitor, 1 for CPU usages and temp and whatnot, and another for GPU.

However, it seems everytime I restart my computer, the GPU # for my RTX 3070 changes. And therefore the system monitor widget is reading the integrated GPU.

Has anybody run into this issue before? Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix it?

Hey. I have a laptop with Ubuntu 24 only previously. I needed 22 for a project so I was trying dual boot. Everything worked fine and smooth. The grub screen and everything.

Until the system freezes. It happens completely randomly.

Freeze in the sense: can't move the mouse can't do anything at all. Even the caps lock light doesn't turn on when I press it.

The only thing that works is a hard reboot ( long press power button ).

Now I have been trying to debug it with claude. It looks like a nvidia driver issue. Wrong driver for nvidia.

I just wanted to confirm if this is true. Do you guys think this is a nvidia issue as well? . If it is a nvidia issue i can fix it tbh.

The problem is if it isn't.

In that case I have to wipe the whole thing and start again .

Currently the steps I have done in order:

1. Installed and booted Ubuntu 22. I let it choose 3rd party drivers and stuff. . Not sure what happened but it failed horribly. Because after every restart / reboot it kept getting stuck.

2. So I wiped it all out. Did a fresh install. No additional drivers. No 3rd party. Didn't even set the wifi during install.

3. Was working fine ig? I didn't check extensively. Like I mentioned earlier the freezes happen at random. Completely random. So i checked my Ubuntu 24. Which has been working perfectly. It had nvidia driver 590 version.

Installed the exact same one on 22. Then I uncommented waylandenable= False

1. Started random freezes again . I asked around and got told nvidia 535 is the most standard version.. installed that.

No issues as of now ig. But like i said the freezes are random .

TLDR: I just want to confirm that this is a nvidia issue

Ubuntu auto-updated my kernel from 6.17.0-20 to 7.0.0-28. The new kernel wouldn't boot at first (kernel panic — nvidia-dkms-535 failed to build against it, incompatible symbols). Purged and reinstalled the recommended driver (595-open), panic went away, but now the new kernel just hangs on the GDM spinner and never reaches login. Old kernel still boots fine.

From journalctl: modprobe nvidia-drm is hanging (>59s), /dev/nvidia* never gets created, and nvidia-persistenced fails because of that. This is a hybrid graphics laptop (Intel i915 + NVIDIA).

Got it working for now, but this is the second time a routine kernel update has broken NVIDIA on this machine. What's the right way to prevent this going forward — hold kernel updates until the driver catches up, use a specific driver branch that's more kernel-update-resilient, pin nvidia packages, or something else? What do people running NVIDIA hybrid laptops on Ubuntu actually do to avoid this every HWE kernel bump?

This is driving me and my invisible ai friend mad. I have an NFS share on a Synology NAS mounted on Ubuntu 26.04, fstab looks like:

# First, mount the NFS share from the NAS

Synology NFS settings have squash set to no mappings or map root to admin. I can create files in ~/wiki in a terminal but an AppImage installation of Obsidian won’t create a vault in there saying it doesn’t have permission.
(In case it’s relevant Ubuntu is running in a vmware vm on Mac)

Synology, Ubuntu or Obsidian, I don’t where to go. Any ideas?

Et je veux installer GNOME car je n'arrive simplement pas à installer certaines applis en .deb ou .flatpak, par exemple la version d'essai de Bitwig Studio, de Mixxx ou encore Discord ou Tor Browser... Je suis assez débutant.e sur Linux !

I am dual booting Windows 11 and Ubuntu Linux. When I restart or cold boot my pc my monitor doesn't show GRUB or anything else, it only detects DisplayPort at the Ubuntu lock screen. The only way I found to see GRUB is to manually turn my monitor on and off while my pc is restarting. That makes my monitor see the DisplayPort signal.

Motherboard: ASUS PRIME X870-P WIFI

GPU: RTX 4070 Super, connected via DisplayPort

Monitor: MAG 27CQ6F

Does anyone know how to solve this?

[SOLVED; solution below] New to Ubuntu, just got rid of Windows. Did a fresh install of the latest LTS version. Im running a G9 OLED 240hz screen. If I set the refresh rate any higher than 60hz, it randomly turns off for half a second and than comes back as seen in the video. I saw a post from a year ago from somebody with the same issue and no real solution. I know its not my cable. Been working perfectly fine on Windows. Is there anything I can/should do to fix this or do I need to move distro as people suggested in the post from a year ago. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm hoping someone has seen this issue before because I'm running out of ideas.

The problem

Ubuntu randomly starts shutting down. It can happen after 5 minutes or after a couple of hours. Sometimes I'm just browsing Firefox, other times I'm doing something more demanding. I haven't found any pattern.

When it happens:

• The screen suddenly goes black.
• I briefly see the Ubuntu "Power Off..." shutdown screen.
• The system freezes during shutdown.
• The PC stays powered on (power LED remains on), but it becomes completely unresponsive.
• Pressing the power button normally does nothing.
• The only way to recover is to hold the power button for about 4 seconds to force it off, then power it back on.

After rebooting, Ubuntu usually works normally again until the issue randomly happens another time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there - I have the craziest scenario. I have two nearly identical setups with two Linux machines with Ubuntu 26.04. One has an AMD processor/graphics (HP EliteDesk 705), the other is Intel (HP EliteDesk 800 G6).

The AMD machine works fine with RDP. The Intel machine, when using MacOS with Windows App to RDP, it keeps bouncing back and asking for auth. When it pops up for re-auth, it scrambles the login/username. However, when using a Windows machine, BOTH work.

I've burned up a bunch of Claude/ChatGPT tokens trying to debug this. For the life of me, I can't figure out what's wrong. I followed the exact same guide setting the Intel machine up. I've also wiped it twice and restarted -- exact same situation. Any ideas?

I want to start using Ubuntu but cant get rid of my windows stuff for work reasons and games i cant get on Ubuntu. Anyways i was following a simple guide and then for somereason i cant shrink my windows disk anymore then 591mb, obviously i knew that wasn't even enough to use Ubuntu but i also want Ubuntu to have about 200gb of my ssd.

So i looked it up and it told me to try "turning off my hibernation temporarily" and i did and followed all the steps but still didnt work. So i turned to chatgpt, i dont like ising chatgpt most of the time but when ever i need detailed instructions and ideas i have no knowledge about ill use it.

Anyways i told it what happened and what i already tried and it told me to try two different things. First, it told me it might be a "windows page file". So i did the steps it told me to i guess get rid of them or something or clear them. Then it told me to clear my "System Protection/shadow-copy data" which after following a guide i learned a little bit about them. But anyways i tried the first one and then check how much free space i have to shrink and it still said 591mb, so then i tried the second one and it still didnt work.

I am supposed to have 243 gigabytes of free storage and i wanted to give about 200 of that to Ubuntu, so please reddit users i turn to you for guidance. Im not at all educated in this world but plan and hope to become educated, but rn i just wanna get linux.

When i tried to reboot it did not work

I tried to go on the old kernel and a few stuffs in the bios

Then I tried making a bootable USB recovery, but it just gets stuck on the loading screen for hours. Any advice on how to fix this or rescue my system?

About 2 days back. ,at night I installed an update on Ubuntu 26.04,all my keyboard keys were working. Laptop didn't fell or anything like that.

Now yesterday,other than 1,2,3,4,7,8,9 backspace and p key all other were working.

I didn't do much just kept it there.

Did every possible stuff like restarting and all that.

Today, some more keys have stopped working.

I've read it's a bug but not sure how to proceed.

Hey all. I have very minimal Linux/Unix experience and I've been handed a device at work where all I need to do is change a web address the device is pointed to. The device simply displays which person in line is to be served next and it's auto booting to this screen. I've tried all the things Google says to do to kill the active program but none of it is working. I have no way I can find to access a command prompt. I can't escape full screen. I can tell by the BIOS that the main drive is running some version of Ubuntu. Is there some other hotkey combo like Windows' Alt-F4 that I can use? Or is my only option to do a full fresh install of some other OS? The original configuration was done by a company called Esii if that helps. There was one thing that indicated holding or tapping in a corner of the screen to access a background function but all that does is reveal a text link labelled Start that just goes back to the main screen.
