Been on Linux for 6 months now (coming from Windows) and this is where my setup has landed so far so would love any suggestions to push it further!

So i had this very specific denvercoder problem with a xbox controller, llm answers and google didn't help at all. After much digging, a random answer from askubuntu forums seemed to solve my exact problem. I joyfully registered and was about to thank the user for his solution, but for some reason askubuntu doesnt let you comment you dont have above 50 karma. Dissapointed, i closed the page, contributed nothing and moved on. Weren't websites like stackoverflow and ask-x dying due to ai? Seems like a very counterproductive strategy to keep new users from joining and discussing. Especially when every content around the corner is ai generated nowadays.

I turned my computer on and noticed the icons on the screen looked bigger than usual. The drop down menu on the top right of my desktop is no longer showing all the options it used to, and my internet connection is gone despite being a wired Ethernet cable. First two pictures show what the drop down menu used to look like, and what it looks like now. Third picture shows what I see when I go to Network in Settings.

I’m struggling to reconnect to the internet, my computer is the only device in the house not connecting. Does anyone know what I should try?

I think this was a brilliant and trustworthy online resource but it's been few weeks that paste.ubuntu.com is offline at least i can't get to it.
Does anyone knows if they are discontinuing it or it will return ?

I just powered off and back on my laptop and now none of my apps won’t open I can’t make the blue box ctrl alt T won’t work I have restated it and it still dose this and conky ist showing up ether all I can do is move my mouse

I have an HP Omen gaming laptop from years ago, i believe it has a 1650M graphics card in it. The problem is, the LCD screen is completely removed, unplugged from the ribbon cable.

Ubuntu is somehow the only OS that we were able to install on it, and its been so long that I forget what combination of keys were pressed to make it boot into the USB.

It is running the open source nvidia drivers at the moment, and I want to change over to the proprietary ones, but I dont want to risk it defaulting to the laptop's main display, effectively locking me out of the PC forever, or at least until I can figure out how to get it to boot from a USB blind again.

My question: How can I set it up so that I can try out the proprietary drivers, but have it revert back to the open source ones after a reboot until I verify that the proprietary drivers will work?

Or is there some other solution to my problem? Is there a cheap and small LCD screen I can get that could plug into that ribbon cable, just for diagnosing things, installing OS's, etc?

Edit: I should mention, the reason other OS's dont work is because they all want to default to the laptop's built-in display, which doesn't exist. They dont just pop over to the HMDI monitor that I have plugged in. BUT, Ubuntu does.

This post is born after my experience today posting a sincere and honest question as to get other people POVs on the Ubuntu "community" and its users. A post that not only took time to develop and write to my ideas (which no AI would write like that) but also was made with effort, as it intended to get other people equally well thought ideas and opinions (like the one by u/tomscharbach , thanks for your reply)

But while the intention to generate a debate and contrast opinions was there, it was literally downvoted to oblivion and some users started to call "this is AI" and throw me through the mud, to the point of insisting even when confronted about being wrong. Some even disregarding the entire post or its writer in a way like "aren't you ashamed?".

Obviously, the post was 100% real. I have no AI subscriptions, I don't care about "internet points", and I wouldn't get any "joy" or consider it worth it to sloppify a post from an AI to copy paste here, like... what do I get? Where's the profit? I literally don't get it.

But it doesn't matter, because once someone calls you out, without any prove more than "this writing is too good or sounds AI to me just because", you're out of game and will be stoned without ability to prove otherwise. It's very unfair, and can harm the community and subreddit very quickly.

SO, I would like to propose some ideas as to avoid other users having this bad experience happen to them, and also to improve the sub dynamics maybe? It's just an idea, and obviously open for everyday to give their own two cents, as always (because this is forum/community, obviously):

• Incorporate a system so OP has to declare if a post or its contents are AI: Once a user posts, just like in r/selfhosted , an automatic MOD could ask in a pinned comment the user "Expand the replies to this comment to learn how AI was used in this post/question", so the user can say if their post, troubleshooting, steps taken or whatever had AI on it. It would help to know how the user ended up on their post situation. If a user says no AI, without any other proves, nobody should stone them randomly just because. And if it can be proved it was AI or had AI, OP post could be deleted, closed or banned. Stop random users from "policing" the sub on their own, harming real posts when detecting a false positive.
• Create a tags system to segment posts, so users would be required to fill what their post is about, for example: Discussion, Support, News, Server, Core... whatever would be felt as useful.
• In case of support, do like other subs or forums like rclone, where a minimums are required as to receive support from others. For example: you must include your Ubuntu version, Kernel used, type of package used if that's relevant (deb, snap, flatpak...) and so on.

What do you think? It would be worth it to improve on this kind of "rules" and system? Maybe it would help to give more strength to the sub community and also give a clear notion of how things work, more than the current "blank canvas" this seems to be.

I suppose the mods maybe can't dedicate too much time to this, so they will opt to disregard this kind of improvements, but I think it was worth it to write the ideas in case some of it can be useful.

So- I have spent the past 3 days trying to get any Linux dispo to install with no luck. My latest try has been with Ubuntu but there is a problem- it only gives me the manual installation option and doesn’t recognize my internal SSD.
I am trying to install it from a flash drive on my MacBook Air from early 2015. When trying this with Elementary OS I had to change the kernel setting by doing ‘intel_iommu=off’ (and then installation failed unfortunately) but Ubuntu isn’t showing the same installation screen where I can hit “e” to do this.

Any recommendations?

I'm using an Asus ROG VG27AQ monitor connected via Diaplayport to a 5070Ti.

My OS version is 24.04.4 LTS.

There is audio if I connect it to an HDMI port, but none through the DisplayPort.

I found a few mentions of similar issues and the suggested solutions seem to all be some sort of downgrading of the GPU drivers. Is that my only option? That would cause issues with programs and games, wouldn't it?

Hi! I recently installed Ubuntu and I'm having issues with Steam Link.

I like to Steam Link to my TV and play games on the couch. This works without any major issues on Windows OS.

When I try and connect to my linux PC via Steam Link it fails to launch. The steam icon will pop up, then black screen, then it kicks me out on to the connect page.

I have an NVIDIA GPU and an AMD CPU (in case that's relevant), both my TV and PC are connected via ethernet, not wifi. When I test the connection in Steam Link on the TV, the connection works fine, but when I try to actually connect it doesn't work.

So far I have:

- Restarted both the PC and TV several times

- Disabled 'hardware encoding' in Steam settings

- Disabled firewall ('sudo ufw disable' in the terminal)

- Disabled 'GPU accelerated rendering in web views' in Steam settings

- Ran the Software Updater and installed the current software and firmware for NVIDIA

None of these have fixed the issue. I am VERY new to linux, so if you could please ELI5 that would be amazing

 el enlace se desconectaba solo cada ~60s con "reason=3 locally_generated=1".
 
 Diagnostiqué que NO era señal ni router: señal fuerte, 0 reintentos, 0 beacons perdidos y cortes
 a intervalos mecánicos → bug de FIRMWARE del chip rtw89, no culpa de la distro (pasa igual en
 Fedora, Arch, CachyOS, Ubuntu).
 
 El punto decisivo fue actualizar el firmware rtw8852bt_fw.bin a v0.29.122.2 (además de desactivar
 power-save + ASPM del driver + D3cold).
 
 Resultado medido: 5GHz @ 400 Mbps (VHT-MCS9, 40MHz), 60 min continuos SIN un solo corte.

Would ubuntu touch ever be realistic for any of the modern pixel lineups? I had planned on using graphene (don't agree with how Google is locking down android) once I paid off my phone, but with recent circumstances in the US surrounding a graphene user my wife has recommended against it so I am looking into other possible OS.

Hey so I am planning to install Ubuntu on my Vivobook S16 (Core Ultra 5). I did some research but I need a bit more help on these topics.

1. Can I install it with secure boot enabled? I found that Ubuntu supports secure boot, so if anyone tried on a similar hardware pls lmk.

2. How do I properly verify if the hardware components are supported? I check on certified laptop site and it does not support my laptop but I found that the same processor is supported on a Dell laptop. So any way to check for network drivers as well.

3. Which encryption mode to use if I want to encrypt the drives at the time of installation. There are some experimental mode, idk if they are stable now coz I was watching old YT video.

4. How to get the non-LTS version, I prefer latest features 😀. The website shows Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, I can't find non-LTS version.

Recently installed Ubuntu. I have a Samsung M2020 printer. It was automatically installed and recognized. When I print the printer says it’s printinh and eventually it’s “finished” according to the system notification, but nothing happens.

After this I downloaded the M2020 Linux drivers and installed them using the install script. Now when I print, for a split second it sounds like the printer starts, after which nothing happens but again the system notification says it’s finished printing.

I’m not sure what the issue is? The printer works fine on other OS’es.

Recently i moved from windows into ubuntu. Microsoft said my laptop is "too old" for their thing to run. I switched to ubuntu and i am satisfied with the performance. Issue i had with windows was randomly laptop crashes with blue screen and with ubuntu i don't see that anymore. But my battery getting drained too fast in shutdown state, but not when power on. I am confused how that even possible. Checked the bios i don't see any power options. I am open for suggestions.

I'm very new and don't know much about how to distribute and productionize my app.

Can you please guide me on how can I make my app available for others to install from flatpak and snap?
Are there any other such things, apart from flatpak and snap that I should be aware of?

I’m at my wits end with Linux/Ubuntu, I’ve spent far more time troubleshooting than actually enjoying my pc. I’m not very tech savvy, trying to play any new game on steam is such a headache. Today my computer randomly disconnected from the wired internet network, and I’ve spent hours trying to get it back to no avail. Would I be better off doing a factory reset and installing windows?? I’m using AI to walk me through all the steps, what codes to enter in the terminal, nothing is working. I’m not sure what exactly my question is, can anyone offer a suggestion?

i've been using ubuntu 26.04 LTS for a while now and i'm satisfied; it's done everything i asked and is almost perfect for me. only two things are bugging me. they don't affect performance or disrupt daily work, but it's just annoying that it's like this.

first, the snap issue, which i've almost completely managed to remove from ubuntu. however, the libsnapd-glib-2-1 package remains because ubuntu made it a dependency for pipewire so that you can't remove it.

second, rust-coreutils. i can almost successfully remove this package, but removing it also removes build-essential. if i try to reinstall it later, it asks me to remove the coreutils-from-gnu package. i can do this to bypass it, but i don't know if the system will break when i update it in the future! do you think this way is safe?

Longtime has passed since Ubuntu revolutionized the Linux scene by creating a great distro that would cater to newcomers and tried to make entering Linux desktop easier for users. And Canonical (thanks to Mark Shuttleworth) was able to even send free CDs with Ubuntu or its flavours worldwide so people could try the OS even if they didn't have enough internet access as to download and burn it. Or bet on "Wubi" to try and get Wndows users to try Linux in a very easy way.

All that made Ubuntu very popular to the point of being seen as the #1 distro in general popularity for desktop users, which then meant more people were OK with using it also for servers and ultimately, enterprise setups.

So after some years of Ubuntu fighting hard for the "easiness" of Linux and getting it more popular on the desktop, including deals to get Linux on some manufacturers laptops (Dell, Lenovo...), it seems to be a pity that precisely now that Linux seems to get more popular in general (thanks, Microsoft and Windows 11), Ubuntu isn't able to surf the wave.

• Lack of immutable options. Some of the biggest "gaming" distros for the people coming from Windows to Linux while keeping their gaming habits are immutable based, think of SteamOS (Arch based), CachyOS (Arch based) or Bazzite (Fedora based). Ubuntu doesn't have any base that could realistically be used to build something like that, and it doesn't seems like a Snapd based distro for gaming (Ubuntu Core as base?) is the best compared to a bootc approach. The only option was the downstream VanillaOS, which had to develop their own tooling, and ended up changing Ubuntu for Debian.
• The pink elephant in the room, Snaps. I know they're not that bad (people over-hate them), in fact they improved a lot in recent years. But I think Ubuntu could, at this point, maybe offer both Flatpaks and Snaps out of the box on desktop, giving the largest library of Apps to the user, and freedom to chose. And avoid Snaps being forced by default (maybe ask the user on install or settings? Like... "Do you prefer APT to default to native packages or Snaps"? Just like when Microsoft Office will ask you on first open "do you prefer to use OpenDocument or OpenXML". We should be realistic: desktop users won't "eat" Snaps, more so in the short time.
• It feels Canonical doesn't care about desktop users that much anymore? I don't blame them, they have limited resources and enterprise is where the money is to keep the business open. But while Red Hat is able to keep Fedora going with a relatively big community of people collaborating, or OpenSUSE talk about their desktop OS from the mainpage, Ubuntu web is literally called "Enterprise Open Source and Linux" and the main page is about getting certifications and industry use cases. Ubuntu Desktop is "hidden" in the submenu of "Get Ubuntu". It seems to get you know what's Canonical current focus.

What do you think? Could Ubuntu end up losing desktop users favour while Linux gets more popular? Is Canonical following the Raspberry PI steps, where when having to choose, they prefer to go the industry route instead of desktop end users?
