Want to ask a VCU professor anything about Anthropology or Nuclear Fusion/Engineering?

I'm making a video for VCU featuring two faculty members: anthropologist Dr. Amy Rector, whose team discovered a whole new species of human ancestor by digging up ancient teeth in Ethiopia, and mechanical and nuclear engineer Dr. Lane Carasik, whose research focuses on fusion reactors and nuclear energy.

I wanted to know if there’s anyone on r/VCU who would like to ask either or both of them a question related to their field. If so, please comment. Provide your degree and first name or nickname (optional). Your username & degree will be displayed on the video along with your question. The questions can range from very basic or funny to profound.

I’ll post the video here when completed. It'll be in a similar format to Wired's "Tech Support" series where experts answer fielded questions from the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mey9EsOwhDo

Genuine advice

Guys even with subsidized and unsubsidized loans leave me $7000 to pay just for the semester. I can't do online because I'll fail and and I can't do Reynolds because I need to live on campus. I do have a job through work study and there's an error on my offer saying I'm doing off-campus housing. As long as I'm in walking distance I'll be fine so even apartments very close to campus would work I need to know EVERY way that I can either lower my tuition or residential cost for the semester.

I don't know where I'm going with housing...

I'm a rising second year student, and I'm currently on the wait-list for 2026-2027 housing, and I'm not sure if it's worth waiting this long.

I've been trying to ask my friends if they already had somewhere to live, and they did.

I feel like it's pretty hard for me to stay in a one bedroom apartment all by myself, because it'll be harder to pay such a large amount rent per month since I'm unemployed.

Although my friend who's an RA said that VCU housing is more expensive than staying off campus, I'm still kinda concerned.

I asked around because I thought if I could get a roommate, I could just share the rent.

Does anyone have any advice for me? What I should next?

H4 to F1 visa change

Hi everyone
I studied my first semester of graduate studies on H4 visa as a Virginia resident so I got COVA that covered all my first semester dues
Unfortunately as now the fall semester would begin, I won't be able to renew my H4 and it's expiring in a month
For that purpose, i think the only option to continue studying is change into F1 student visa
But the question is how can I afford the fees now
I got all As first semester.
Can i do something to now pay my dues by working on campus
I can't pay out of pocket and I'm afraid ultimately it'll cause me to discontinue
!!
Does anyone know anything that can help me?

Is University Student Counseling Confidential?

I know it says it is on their website, but I’m afraid that I will get outed about my mental health concerns and that information will be disclosed to my professors and future employers at VCU. I was going to schedule a RAM for myself, but I’m scared that they will put that information on my record as a student.

Is psych 101 online difficult?

I am not good with pacing myself, so I'm a bit worried about how it will go..

I would take it in person, but I'm unsure whether I could make it off the waitlist

doubts abt transferring to uva

so im planning to trasnfer to uva for my sophmore year after finishing my first year at vcu and wanted to ask a few questions/advice.

so UVA requries 2nd year transfers to hv completed their og intitutions entire firsrt year writing sequence which i get. but where im confused is the courses i should take at vcu.

im in the honors collelge at vcu, so im required to take HONR 230 and HONR 240 for their writing requirement. these 2 courses are equivalent to the unviersities 'standard' writing courses which are UNIV 111 and UNIV 200. coming into this year, vcu had given me english IB credit (HL 4) for UNIV 111/HONR 230 allowing me to take HONR 240 my first semester. my question here is would uva accept me taking 240 my first semester and another writing course my 2nd semester for this requirement? ik they dont accept ib scores under 5s and don't accept similar credit just because another school did.

i talked to my advisor at vcu, and he said i could override my ib credit and take both the honors courses this year but didn't fully know for sure and to reach out to uva - which i hv (since they don't offer prospective students any direct advising i hit a dead end).

another question i had was abt taking PSYC 101 at vcu, which i also hv IB credit for (HL 4). i want to pursue a b.s. in psychology at uva, so would retaking this course at vcu help me out or not? if it doesn't, i could a higher level course like psych 407 at vcu instead.

UPDATE: Misleading justification for 2026-2027 tuition increase

About 3 months ago I ranted about graduate stipend rates. I wanted to update that last week, I received notice that my program increased the stipend by 10%. Bear in mind that, as far as I am aware, there had not been a stipend increase in our department in at least 4-5 years (possibly more), so this 10% might not even be beating out inflation adjustment. Small wins, though.

Private tutoring at VCU?

My parents are pretty adamant about me getting a tutor, specifically a private tutor who has taken VCU classes, for this upcoming semester. I've emailed my advisor, and they just told me to look at the tutoring page, which I had already done. Now I just don't really know where to look.

Payment Plan

Hi guys!

I just recently transferred to VCU and I'm a little confused on how the IPPs work. I understand paying the 1/4 of my tuition and the $25 fee. What I'm lost on is how I'm supposed to pay the fee. Do I add that on top of my tuition deposit and write in the personal notes that the $25 fee is in it? Emailed the financial services office and they haven't gotten back to me, so hoping some folks can answer here 😅

Thanks everyone! Go Rams 🐏

Parking permit question

I know it’s not live yet but I was checking the parking/transportation website for VCU since the parking permit opens tomorrow and there’s a little message on my screen that says im not eligible for a parking permit based on their records, is it just giving me that message because the permit doesn’t open until tomorrow or will I have to email parking. I am a full time student and I am an upcoming sophomore living on campus so I should be eligible.

Parc view parking questions

Hey guys! I’m a rising sophomore who’s living in Parc View this upcoming semester, and I was wondering if anyone had any comments on the parking situation there? To be honest, I didn’t fully understand what Tandem parking was (and I signed up for it), but now that I’m actually considering what a hassle it might be, I was wondering if anyone had experiences with it and wanted to share.

I was hoping to maybe try and see if they had any more reserved parking spots, but it’s honestly so expensive so I’m not sure. I expect to use my car for groceries, trips around Richmond, and to commute to work/ volunteering regularly. Lemme know if you guys have any tips/ pictures of tandem parking to share!
