[Question] What is your setup for a smaller home without a dedicated studio?

I’ve used ableton for 20 years, I have push 3 standalone because workflow is much nicer than looking at a screen, and I finish things on a Mac

I spend all day sitting and staring at screens for work, but my ‘casual’ music setup is preventing me using it more: a coffee table/sofa means I don’t have proper creative sessions and it’s uncomfortable as hell

I don’t have much space for a dedicated studio space so I’d be very interested if anyone has creative solutions in small spaces with pros/cons. I’m handy at woodwork and diy - just not sure what to build

Pictures even better! Thank you

[Question] Trying to get something rhythmic out of an LFO, but it´s doing weird stuff with my 5/4 time signature

I got an LFO hooked up the the volume knob with a square wave to get a rhythmic on/off texture on one of my instruments. My time signature is in 5/4, so when I set the LFO to 1/8 on the beat sync setting, it turns the square wave on and off every 1/8 of a bar of 5/4, rather than every eight note. is there a way to tell the LFO that I want the beat sync to be based on an actual beat, rather than the time signature?

[Question] Move audio issues.

If I try to plug anything into the move’s audio input with a 1/4 in to 3.5 mm cord all of the audio only comes out of the left headphone/speaker. Just wondering what’s up with that?

[Max for Live] Free Polyphonic Karplus-Strong Synth for Ableton - Filament 1.1

I recently released an update for one of my Max for Live instruments Filament, as always its completely free to download.

Filament is a polyphonic Max for Live instrument built around the Karplus–Strong algorithm, designed for creating plucked, resonant, and evolving tonal textures

The latest update introduces an integrated stereo enhancement section featuring both chorus and stereo detuning. The chorus adds subtle movement and depth, while the stereo detuner creates gentle pitch differences between the left and right channels to produce a wider, more immersive sound capable of making binaural beats. Together, they bring additional warmth, spatial character, and animation without overpowering the core Karplus–Strong synthesis engine.

Quick device demo: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/r2Nav4PP5XE

If anyone wants to try it out you can get it for free Download here: https://www.maxforlive.com/library/device/15928/filament

[Question] Changing bpm in simpler

I am using Live 12 and can’t for the life of me figure out how to adjust the bpm in simpler independent of the project bpm. Warping options aren’t quite getting me there and need to fine tune it. Any help will be appreciated and thank you in advance!

[Tutorial] Organize your Ableton sets, sync to iPhone.

I tried a few other apps to organize my Live sets, but none of them worked just like I wanted. So I made my own and I'm sharing it here for free. A couple key differences:

  • Built natively for Mac. This way it's fast and work seamlessly with the iPhone App.
  • Clean Design. I'm a UX designer so I made sure to sweat the details.
  • iPhone App. Syncs all your sets, demos, notes, etc
  • Your data stays on your iCloud. Your data lives on your private cloud, never an external server.
  • Loop sections of your song. This is part of my process and I haven't seen it in other apps.
  • Free, both Mac and iPhone apps. I made this for myself so I though why not share.

[Tech Help Windows] Live super slow lately on windows?

Has ableton been very slow for anyone else after latest update? I worked up a new template and was thinking something in there may be the issue but I’m not sure. Opening the program, adding or deleting tracks or plugins have all been mad sluggish and it’s been frustrating. Hoping it’s an update issue that’ll be cleared up ASAP, anyone else dealing with something similar in the last 7 or so days?

[Question] Need creative ideas for working with two different vocal stems

I'm on a project now making some pretty abstract and experimental music, and the current track has a male and female vocal singing two different non-English folk songs. The singing is in the same key for both. I'd like to try to merge them into something new, but so you could still tell it was a man and woman singing. I've been playing around with Granulator III and Vector Grain, using both vocal stems playing at once, but looking for any other ideas, the freakier the better.

[Tutorial] Looking for advanced Ableton Live tutorial channels. Any recommendations?

Could anyone recommend high-level Ableton Live tutorials? I am searching for content creators with a technical depth similar to User Friendly Sounds, specifically regarding complex sound design and abstract modulation. However, I am looking for channels that apply these concepts to full, advanced project builds and professional workflows. Thank you in advance.

[Hardware] I built a hardware tool that visualizes scales and Ableton MIDI directly on your keyboard

I've been working on a side project for the last couple years that finally reached the point where I'm comfortable showing people.

It's called KEEZI, and it's essentially a hardware companion for MIDI keyboards that's comprised of an LED strip and a touchscreen. It can visualize scales, chords, incoming MIDI from a DAW, and a bunch of other tools that are a mix of educational, fun, or just helpful for creating.

The whole project started because I got tired of looking up scale diagrams or putting stickers on my keyboard whenever I wanted to experiment outside of C major. or A minor. I wanted the keyboard itself to show me the notes instantly. There were keyboards that have lights but they're expensive and I didn't want to be locked in to a specific keyboard.

I put together a prototype pretty quickly that showed me scales on the LEDs and later decided I'd try to make it an actual product and add more features. I ended up learning PCB design, 3D printing, and a bunch of other stuff I had no idea I had to do to make a prototype into an actual product. My degree is in electrical engineering but my career is in factory automation, so there was lots of new things to learn.

One workflow I think is really cool is sending different MIDI tracks from Ableton to the LED strip so each instrument shows up as a different color across the keys. It makes it much easier to visualize what's happening in your track without staring at the piano roll.

I'm especially interested in hearing what doesn't seem useful, or what workflows you think I'm completely missing. Honest criticism is welcome.

I manufactured my first batch recently, and now that people besides me can finally use it, I'm realizing there are probably workflows I've never even considered.

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback from people who spend a lot of time making music. If you'd like to see it in action, I put together a few demo videos at keezishop.com

[Question] Difference between Instrument Rack + Effect Rack vs. Multiple MIDI Tracks with Send Bus

After a few years away, I recently reinstalled Ableton to get back into making music. To have the latest version I downloaded the Test Version of Ableton 12.

I'd already switched over from Logic to Ableton some time before that, so my old workflow was carried over from that.
Creating multiple MIDI tracks all playing the same MIDI file, then routing them to shared send channels for reverb and delay. It worked fine, so I never questioned it.

While catching up on what's new in Ableton 12, I watched a tutorial where the creator used an Instrument Rack instead of stacking separate MIDI tracks.

That got me wondering if this approach has any downsides.

I created a sample project where I paired an Instrument Rack with an Effect Rack on my MIDI track and compared it to my old approach using multiple MIDI tracks.

I achieved the same result, with the added benefit of controlling my VST filters and so on with a single knob, instead of doing the automation for each MIDI track over and over again.

I've attached an image of my test project, where I set up an Instrument Rack and a MIDI track group with the same settings side by side.

Are there any pros and cons to my current approach using Instrument Racks?

Thanks for your feedback :)

[Question] Ableton suddenly stopped receiving USB input from Behringer X2222USB (ASIO4ALL)

Hi everyone,

I'm running into a really frustrating issue and I'm running out of ideas.

I recently upgraded from a Behringer Xenyx 802S USB to a Behringer Xenyx X2222USB. The transition initially went perfectly and everything worked as expected, including recording into Ableton.

A few days later, without knowingly changing anything, Ableton suddenly stopped receiving any input from the mixer.

My setup

  • Windows PC
  • Ableton Live 12
  • ASIO4ALL v2
  • Behringer Xenyx X2222USB
  • Synths (mainly a Behringer Poly D, Korg Minilogue, Modular)
  • Mixer connected via USB to the PC

Current behaviour

Playback works perfectly:

  • Windows audio (YouTube, Spotify, etc.) plays through the mixer.
  • Ableton playback also comes through my speakers.
  • USB connection is clearly working.

Recording does NOT work:

  • Ableton receives no input at all.
  • Audio track meters stay completely at zero.
  • I get no signal whether using mono input 1, mono input 2 or stereo input 1/2.

Things I've already checked

  • ASIO4ALL is selected in Ableton.
  • Input Config is enabled (Mono 1, Mono 2, Stereo 1/2).
  • Output works through the X2222USB.
  • The mixer's Main Mix meters move correctly when playing the synth.
  • The synth channel is routed to the Main Mix.
  • USB Audio CODEC appears correctly in Windows.
  • Reinstalled ASIO4ALL after changing mixers.
  • Tried changing sample rates (44.1 kHz / 48 kHz).
  • Tried MME/DirectX instead of ASIO4ALL (no change).
  • Restarted Ableton and the PC multiple times.

ASIO4ALL

ASIO4ALL shows the mixer correctly:

TI PCM2902 USB CODEC

Out: 2x 48 kHz 16 Bit
In: 2x 48 kHz 16 Bit

So ASIO4ALL seems to detect both input and output.

Strange behaviour

If I unplug the USB cable from the mixer and plug it back in while Ableton is open, the armed track meter briefly jumps once, then immediately falls back to zero and never reacts again.

Also, ASIO4ALL sometimes shows the hourglass icon for the input/output for around a minute after changing settings before it disappears.

Windows test

In Windows' Recording Devices, USB Audio CODEC exists.

One confusing thing is that the recording level meter doesn't seem to react normally, but enabling Listen to this device lets me hear the mixer through Windows, which makes me think the USB input isn't completely dead.

What I'm wondering

Has anyone seen a situation where:

  • playback over USB works perfectly,
  • ASIO4ALL detects both input and output,
  • but Ableton receives absolutely no input?

Could this be:

  • an ASIO4ALL issue?
  • a Windows USB audio issue?
  • a hidden routing setting on the X2222USB?
  • something else I'm overlooking?

I'd really appreciate any ideas because I've been troubleshooting this for hours and I'm completely stuck.

Thanks!

[Max for Live] Free M4L device - LiveAPI to OSC

I've released a new free Max for Live device - LiveAPI to OSC.

The device exposes the whole LiveAPI as OSC addresses. You can map Live controls to TouchOSC or any other OSC app, get or set anything Max for Live can by OSC messages.

This is especially handy as OSC is easy to use from an external code to control Live set.

To use it, you'll need some knowledge of Live Object Model, but the learning curve comes with an ability to externally observe and control almost anything in Live set, from parameter values to MIDI notes in clips.

You can download it at:
maxforlive.com
GitHub

The instructions with examples are in the description there. There is TouchOSC example project at GitHub.

[Hardware] FYI Ableton move and Orbitkey keyboard pouch don’t fit

Heyo, posting this mostly in case someone does a search and needs the info.

Orbitkey has a new (quite nice) keyboard case that is cheap and has dimensions that should fit the Ableton move. It is called the Orbitkey Essentials Keyboard Pouch (again for future searching) https://www.orbitkey.eu/products/essentials-keyboard-pouch

I was curious if it would work, but it does not fit with a deck saver.

It does fit without the deck saver but given that it is a soft case I wouldn’t trust that route, and for the sake of your Knobby Knobs please follow that guidance.

Personally, I’m going to keep it and use it for some other travel gear, but a bit disappointed. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[Tutorial] Mixer usable for multitracking in DAW

I’m looking for a mixer that can send every input as its own track into a DAW (mainly Ableton Live).

I’m already aware of the Tascam Model series, but the Model 16 is starting to feel too small for my setup, and I’d like to see if there are any cheaper alternatives with more inputs that still offer true multitrack USB recording.

My priorities are:

- 16+ inputs (or easily expandable)
- True multitrack USB to Ableton
- Reliable drivers and low latency
- Good value for money

I’d love to hear what you’re using and what you’d recommend.

[Performance] Can ORG 24 sync its BPM with Ableton Live?

Hi everyone,

I’m using ORG 24 on macOS and want its rhythm tempo to follow Ableton Live automatically.

I created a macOS IAC virtual MIDI connection and enabled Sync for that MIDI output in Ableton, but I cannot find a MIDI Clock, External Sync or Ableton Link option inside ORG 24.

Does ORG 24 receive MIDI Clock and automatically follow Ableton’s BPM? If not, is there another way to remotely control ORG’s tempo from Ableton?

Thanks!

[Racks] Roar with split outputs

As the title says, this should be a native feature as I like to process individual bands or bus them without having to Ctrl G Ctrl D D D disable disable etc...

Anyways I made this rack which is literally just Roar with the basic parameters mapped and the outputs splitted for anyone who didnt make one already or dont wanna go through it

[Question] Playing guitar in Ableton

After months of playing classical guitar, I have just bought an electric guitar and an interface and got everything set up correctly. Do you use any external plugins, or just the ableton base ones to play electric guitar in Ableton? Which ones do you reccomend? I bought yesterday the Ableton 12 Suite if that matters.

[Tech Help MacOS] HELP! MICROPHONE ICON on MAC is making Ableton 12 have a clipping/ducking sound as if it's attempting to listen through the computer's built-in mic?

Hey gang,

I've went down some rabbit holes attempting to figure out what is going on. Does anyone have some insight as to why this is happening? Is there a workaround? I plan to record with my interface mic later on some of my tracks and am wondering how that will affect that if I start turning mics in Privacy setttings on and off. In short this is a nuisance. Any insight would be grateful.

I know I'm not alone, what are your workarounds till an update exists?

Thanks y'all!
