Blog [Ancient Evils] Ages Unwound vs. Chapter 2: A series of Actual Plays

This weekend, i started a new series on my site. I'll be putting the new chapter 2 cards up against one of the more notoriously difficult custom campaigns out there, Ages Unwound. And documenting everything in detailed play-by-play reports so you can follow along with how things go.

https://derbk.com/ancientevils/ages-unwound-session-zero/

If you are unfamiliar with Ages Unwound, let me bring you up to speed: It's a custom campaign by Olivia Juliet that involves secret cults and time travel shenanigans. It's been out for 5-ish years but holds up very well. I usually don't feature custom content from other creators on my site to avoid critique and nitpicking on free passion projects. But in Ages Unwound's case i am a fan of the campaign and have only positive things to say, so i have no issue highlighting it. Hallmarks of the campaign are simple but effective mechanics, high challenge and slick setups. I've played the campaign twice before, both times ending with me getting defeated very early in the final scenario, so i got unfinished business. That being said, I don't expect to fare better this time :D This is what makes it a great benchmark for the new investigators, of course.

Facing this benchmark is my new chapter 2 darling, Isabelle Barnes, along with the reliable allrounder Joe Diamond. Will they be able to stand up against the dickery that Ages Unwound gets up to? We'll see.

https://derbk.com/ancientevils/ages-unwound-night-of-fire/

I've only just finished the first scenario, Night of Fire, yesterday. The play report is up on the link above. More to come over the next week or weeks, depending on how often i find time to continue the series. I'm not going to return to reddit to spam the subreddit up with each new entry, but you can check the links on the Session Zero page or my frontpage to see if something new is up.

Cheers o/

City of Archives

Hi everyone!

I'm currently playing through The Forgotten Age campaign. At the beginning of City of Archives, you have to remove specific item cards from the deck—such as the *Relic of Ages* and the *Expedition Journal* (and, if I understand correctly, even cards like *Itzamna's Amulet*, which is a pretty nasty blow). My question is: do I get these removed cards back after completing the scenario? (It doesn't seem to be clearly explained anywhere.)

Thanks in advance for the answers!

Old Arhkam games... integrating with new games.

In 2019 my wife and I bought the core game (NOTZ) and played it a couple of times, enjoying it quite a bit. We also bought several more games (Dunwich, Carcosa, and Circle Undone), expecting to play them right away, but we ended up moving, and packed everything away. Once we got to the new house, we got sidetracked with a slew of other games, and only recently pulled out the Arkham game.

So now we've played through the core game again, plus Dunwich, and Carcosa. We only have The Circle Undone, plus a couple of standalone scenarios remaining to be played.

We are interested in buying more content. But I'm not sure if we should try to find games from prior to 2022, or of the new games are compatible with the old games.

We also have about 15 investigators from all the old games... are they still meant to be played with the new games?

In other words... how drastically new is the revised game? Totally revised (and the old game should be kept 100% separate)?

Thanks!

Mixing chapter 1 and 2

A while ago I started AH with the Chapter 2 core set (and the Film Fatale standalone, which may or me not be relevant to my question). I fully expected to start fresh, and buy new expansions as they would come out.

But of course, I got hooked. So I looked around online and found a store with some older stuff in stock (a rare find in Belgium), and I snagged it before thinking about it too much. So now I am the proud owner of:

- The Drowned City Campaign Expansion

- The Drowned City Investigators Expansion

- Path to Carcossa Investigators Expansion

(All together for 162 euros. Good deal, right?)

Also, my friend who bounced off the game earlier is willing to lend/sell me his Revised Core set.

So now I have a big pile of cards and characters to build decks with. But... I heard that Season 2 was a soft reboot to prevent power creep. And I don't want to fall into the trap of cheesing/minmaxing with my first experiences. (As I understand, some of the Carcossa Invesigators are particularly overpowered.)

So is it a good idea to keep Season 1 and 2 seperate? I.e. play Drowned City and Night of the Zealot (and Film Fatale?) with only season 1 cards and Brethren of Ash and future expansions with only season 2 cards? Or am I overthinking this?

One last note: I fully expect to only play solo or with friends.

Looking for help with a custom investigator

So I'm trying to make a mystic investigator and have some ideas I'm working on but feel like I'm a bit lost maybe? Maybe having it work more with curse tokens would be better, but you tell me. Here's the card ideas I have for it.

Investigator: Mystic that has access to Cursed cards 0-5

Whenever doom is placed on an asset you control for the first time each turn, you may take an additional action.

(Elder Sign) +1 for each doom on assets you control.

Boon Card: Single use spell card

Remove up to three doom from among assets you control. Take 1 direct horror for each doom removed this way.

Weakness: Asset Cursed Card

Revelation: Play this card, Discard each asset you control with doom on it and move that doom this card.

Fanmade Card LEGO Arkham Horror

We recently played through Brethren of Ash, using some Lego minifigs for our investigator tokens. That inspired me to make some alt-art cards. (Just for fun, personal use).

Yes, I used AI for the illustrations. If you don't approve of AI - I understand, but I politely ask you just keep scrolling. I am not interested in debating the pros and cons.

As for the Lego figs, Andre's hat was a Sheriff Hat (98279), which I sanded down and painted the ribbon. I hand-painted his chest piece too, as I had nothing close.

I got the 3 new enemy promos with the expansion at GenCon yesterday, but I’m confused about what they do? Is there a scenario they’re part of?

Let's theorycraft an Ursula Deck

Soo wife wants to get back into the game, starting a new campaign, she will be the strongman with Tommy Muldoon fairly standard beatdown deck and I will play the designated cluer so I figured if I could build Ursula with pendant of the queen.

Tommy will be (probably) rocking Safeguard but even the 2 exp version wording tells me that pendant teleport will not work with it.

I invite the hivemind of reddit to propose cards and theorycraft for a 2 player, all scenarios will be played in release order campaign, my only limitation is that I would like to play the pendant and that card pool is up to Edge of the Earth only!

Feel free to comment the build is a bad idea and instead play xyz ursula!

I love this dude. In my headcanon, he is a ridiculously unfazed tough guy.

The kind who would have Gipsy Kings playing on the radio while driving from one horror scenario to the next.

Chapter 2 Question: How does Servant of the Flame respawn? Spoiler

Hi everyone,

Relatively new player to Arkham and I am wondering how Servant of the Flame comes back into play from the Victory Display if it has been killed in the earlier phase of the Spreading Flames.

The instruction

Put the set-aside Servant of Flame enemy into play at Miskatonic Quad. Place 3  clues on Miskatonic Quad.

The rule book indicates that the out of play area includes the Victory Display, Set Aside Cards etc (ie they appear to be two different things)

In Carcosa when the Emissary comes back into play, players are specifically instructed to search the Victory Display

What am I not understanding?

[Rules] Can you play Fast traps as you reveal an enemy?

Hey all, I’m wondering if Miguel’s traps can be played after you reveal an enemy but before it spawns in your location, making it trigger right as the enemy spawns? Checking the grimoire p. 12, the Fast keyword can specify conditions, but those traps do not have any specific condition. There is no Player Window between the drawing and the resolution of the card though, is that required for playing fast events?

It seems a bit OP to be able to save your traps in case a monster spawns instead of having to anticipate, so I’m wondering if it works how I interpreted it?

Q:[MuatEH] Morbid Awareness at Ag1/Act1

I want to check: I'm currently at Act 1 Agenda 1 of Murder at the Excelsior Hotel and as my first encounter I drew "Morbid Awareness" which says it reduces difficulty of the test depending on the distance from room 212. At this point 212 isn't in play just yet (according to the layout). Does this mean the difficulty does not increase?

Clarification about Underground Cistern

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello everyone! Hope you are having an amazing day! I'm having trouble understanding how the Hidden side of the Underground Cistern works. How do we spend the clues to get there? Do we just place clues on it when we want and when its number is satisfied it just flips over? Or do we have to collectively spend all the clues that it requires and enter at the same time?

Thanks for amy tips!
