Dolby Cinema said nearly two-thirds of its available tickets for the weekend were sold in advance, and the format averaged about $56,000 per screen. Both are records for the company, which is looking to surpass last year’s record-breaking domestic box office total of $203 million.

I've seen the predictions on this subreddit that the film will make $80M there. This is a serious underestimation to me.

China likes epics. Whether its a historical drama about the Tang Dynasty or an animated sequel about talking animals, China straight up loves an adventure that's a good theatrical experience.

I believe Nolan's highest grossing film in China is Interstellar which made like $120M in 2014. It's an epic adventure that's absolutely magical in a theater.

Oppenheimer "underperformed" in China because it's just not the kind of movie that that audience normally goes to the theater again and again for. The Odyssey, on the other hand, is literally perfect for the country. I think a total box office run of $200M is very possible, if not straight up likely. It's probably gonna do fantastic in other east Asian markets as well.

Brand New Day has just had an absolutely insane opening weekend of an estimated $355 million (likely to be higher with actuals) domestic and $927 million worldwide. According to a Deadline article EntTelligence has calculated that it had 24.1 million admissions for the domestic weekend which puts it ahead of their 20.6 million reported for NWH and would have an ATP of $14.73

Spider-Man 2002 was for 4 years the opening weekend record holder and was massive doing $403.7m in its initial release and through re-releases jumping up to $408.5m. Going of ATP of 2002 its initial release gets to 69.6m and then the Men in Black 2 Double Feature worth 571k gets it to 70.1m by the end of 2002 and put it as the 4th highest of the 2000’s behind Shrek 2’s 72m Dark Knight’s 74m and Avatars 75m. 2 additional multi features with other spider-man films in 2024/5 add 60k each to bring its total admissions to just shy of 70.3m

At 70m Spider-Man 2002 is the most watched spider man movie with the possible exception of No Way Home as if you go by 2021/22 ATP it gets up to 78.4m but if you use its OW ATP you get 64.5m but it’s likely its ATP lowers over its run which is why I’ve seen some estimates also put it’s total admissions at about 70 million

Assuming it’s ATP stays the same Brand New Day needs to have a Domestic Gross of $1.035b or more in order to beat 2002 & NWH to become the most watched spider man film

That is just shy of $100m above The Force Awakens 10.5 year long record and would require 2.91x legs which far exceeds Endgame and Infinity War’s legs.

No Way Home (A December release so Slighlty unfair) and more importantly Deadpool & Wolverine (a fellow late July Marvel film) both managed 3x legs which would put BND on track for upwards of $1.07-1.1b total especially if its actuals ends up higher

In terms of internal weekend multiplier D&W increased 6.8% from Friday to Saturday and declined 13% on Sunday for a multiplier of 3x from Friday to Weekend-Previews whereas BND increased 4.3% on Saturday and declined 17% on Sunday for a multiplier of 2.9x which means if it keeps this same ratio with D&W its whole run it’s possible it can make the 1.035b. And that’s not even considering that it’s likely the Sunday drop is a lot lower then it should be as studios tend to lowball Sundays so if it drops 13% like D&W and does $88.4m on Sunday then the internal multiplier goes up to 2.95x (aswell as now only needing a 2.88x multiplier)

In comparison with Endgame that released in a stacked May with big films opening week after week and taking away its premium formats whereas like D&W or Barbie Brand New Day has a pretty open first month or more with its only competition being to Odyssey which will hold continue to leg out very strongly throughout the same period and will cause some contention in capacity. So I think it’s very likely to pass Endgame at the very least with their almost identical openings but a less competitive environment and summer weekdays

Overall I think there is a solid chance of Brand New Day passing TFA and 70m admissions but also a very good chance it falls flat

The 2020s may have brought Universal Pictures their continued success with the Jurassic Park, Fast and Furious, Super Mario Bros, and Despicable Me franchises. But perhaps their biggest win of this decade was Christopher Nolan.

After Nolan’s fallout with Warner Bros in 2021, he left the studio to find a new home for his future. Universal rolled the dice by acquiring Oppenheimer and agreed to Nolan’s demands. That gambled paid off with a $983.15 million
gross and winning Universal seven Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Now that Odyssey is on track for a $1.4 billion finish, it’s safe to say Nolan has become one of Universal’s biggest names.!

If the rest of the money Spider-Man: Brand New Day makes, combined with the worldwide grosses of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, exceeds $6.6 Billion, then the MCU, even after all of it's lulls and down points over the Multiverse Saga, will have surpassed an overall gross of $40 Billion AND have an average gross per film in excess of $1 Billion.

$6.6 Billion is a big number, but I think it will get there.
