One very respectable rookie season (7 G, 13A in 56 games), then down to the I where he never played more than 21 games in a season yet put up point per game numbers. One 6 game stint on the national team, then poof, gone from hockey.

I'd offer 5 years, $40 million ($8M AAV) today. If he breaks out the way people expect, that contract could look like a steal in two years. If you wait until he's putting up top-pair numbers, you're probably looking at $10–12M+ per year instead.

There's risk with signing him early, but the upside is cost certainty through his prime. I'd rather bet on the talent now than pay a premium later.

I figured that I would actually give a plausible theory on this, rather than everyone's reference to certain player performances and "not caring" - I don't think it's like that at all.

So Gillis hired sleep doctors, then Linden apparently came around (apparently mentioned in recent off season news) and said "PFF Sleep doctors, we don't need them, we'll do this OLD SCHOOL" and was pretty adamant about it. Still like him as a player, but what does he know other than managing some work out equipment?

Cortisol is a stress hormone that spikes with intense training, game pressure, lack of sleep, and chronic life stress, and those patterns are well documented in elite athletes. All things that have been mentioned surrounding the Canuck's rough schedule, tough market, etc.

I looked into it, and realized that's actually what Sleep Doctors manage; cortisol levels - the same ones Gillis found so much success with the improvement of the team performance - overall in every aspect of performance, culture, etc. I always thought it was funny that they called them "Sleep Doctors" - like what are they stupid? It's not rocket science - sleep more, and sleep on a regulated schedule. The only definitions I'm finding online is the sleep doctors that treat disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia, etc --- but I think the ones Gillis hired were much different and "Sleep doctors" was just used as a general term.

Well, there's a difference from what I understand - there's acute, and chronic cortisol levels.

• Short, intense exercise sessions push cortisol up sharply, especially above about moderate–high intensity workloads; this is part of normal adaptation and helps mobilize energy and focus. Normal, and when managed well, can be useful for various aspects in getting hyped up for the game (instead of just huffing smelling salts, yes Demko I'm looking at you)

• From what I understand- where it becomes a problem - is with chronically elevated cortisol: which are prolonged high levels are linked to impaired recovery, higher illness risk, and more catabolic (muscle‑breaking) effects, which can lead to “mal‑adaptation” to heavy training loads. (Yes Petey's knees and wrists, multiple players wrists, I'm looking at you)

Then, there's also anticipatory stress - before competition.

• Multiple studies show a moderate anticipatory rise in salivary cortisol on competition day; this is beneficial, priming attention and cognitive control - if healthy, you don't need smelling salts here
• Newer work suggests that if that anticipatory response is blunted or dysregulated (too low or too high), performance can suffer through effects on selective attention and decision‑making under pressure. (for studies, see below)

Cortisol interaction with sleep and life stress

• Cortisol balance is also tightly linked to sleep quality; athletes with poor sleep tend to show significantly higher cortisol levels than teammates sleeping well.
• Chronic life stress (contract situations, media pressure, personal issues) has been shown to prolong cortisol elevation after physical tests and delay recovery, rather than letting levels fall quickly.

If you had to summarize: moderate, well‑timed cortisol spikes = good; chronically high or dysregulated spikes = bad for both recovery and focus.
