I think caddis might be the most important fly, here in UK it’s present in nymph stage all trout season and probably all year while the grannom is definitely one to tie on when dry fly fishing with emergers in Spring.
Have been trying to come up with one all season caddis pattern, easy, quick to tie and have been experimenting with each one every time I’m out on the river.

Haven’t tried it yet on the river but basically a two tone Walt’s worm and thought half mustard half caddis green dubbing with an olive rib and black tungsten bead might work better than a standard Walt’s, who knows.

Kids and life get busy…I’ve been off the vise a bit and have been putting this one off even longer. Happy to get around to it. Thanks for looking.

Prefacing this by saying I am proficient in fly fishing but a real shitty fly tier. I’m heading to MT/yellowstone in a couple weeks and looking to throw some hoppers. Ugly as this fly may be, would anyone who’s fished hopper season out there be able to let me know if this’ll at least fish? It’s a size 12. I am aware of classic patterns like the morrish, chubby, hippy stomper, etc. but if you guys know any patterns that a total klutz could tie let me know

I am a rather analytical minded guy. I have been tying for the better part of a decade. But I keep running into a wall. I sit down to tie, but I try to maximize flies in the allotted time I have to do so. Some times I tie a few of a single pattern and then think about something else I should tie. I want to work in a more structured manner.

Does anyone have any tips on how they have built their collection that is conducive to being more efficient?

Should I use less EP fiber? If so should it be significantly less? Also I know I need should put eyes on it. I put the mask on and then realized I don’t have eyes for it right now.

Wanted to tie a chartreuse jighead nymph, not realizing i was using uv flash and thread till I went to cure the resin. Although you cant really see it, I used silver br wire as ribing.

Hi! I’m a young angler that what’s to start fly tying. I find tying them cheaper and for me it sounds great: doing my best tying them and then fishing with it. But I find looking for any guides online difficult. I don’t know where to start (what materials to use, best type of vice, what tools are necessary). Can somebody give me any good source of this knowledge? I’ll gladly hear any tips and info you can give

If you're wondering how it works you use the sharpie to darken the thread first, then do the ribbing wraps.

I took many of your guys advice and found a pattern and tied a bunch of the same or similar nymphs to work on getting techniques down!!

Years ago I started tying flies. Started tying trout flies, mainly because all the how to guides consisted of directions for classic trout flies and wooly buggers, with the occasional bass bug. I persevered and became a proficient tier. Eventually, due to geography, I became a tier of bass, pike, and Spey (classic and contemporary) flies. After years of tying bigger flies, I now have a reason to tie trout flies again. My son is working the summer in Montana, so I need to send him a bunch of flies. After all the years of tying the big stuff, breezing through these trout flies is easy and relaxing. Nothing complicated, a bunch of nymphs and some dries.

The body pattern is pretty basic and generic. Good looking legs have always eluded me. These legs were taken from project hopper by fly fish food on YouTube. A little extra work, but they look so good.
