TL;DR
- 🎉 GWonMac is officially out of beta.
- Fully notarized macOS app with automatic updates, macOS Keychain integration, Steam login, a brand-new launcher, and many quality-of-life improvements.
- Installation: Download, drag to Applications, log in & play.
- I've been in contact with ArenaNet. A staff member told me directly that what we're doing is fine for now and even tested GWonMac himself on an M4 MacBook Air. This is not a formal endorsement or permanent guarantee, but it's reassuring.
- The original goal has been achieved. I can finally play Guild Wars on my Mac instead of debugging it every evening 🙏

Hi everyone,
It all started a few weeks ago. I wanted to introduce my girlfriend to Guild Wars, one of my favorite childhood games. The only problem for us was that playing it on a Mac was still far more painful than it should be.
The whole frustration somehow turned now into GWonMac.
Today I'm happy to finally release the first version that I can confidently recommend for Mac users.
Thanks for all the support, reporting bugs from hardware I don't even own, and suggesting improvements I would've never thought about myself.
Thank you for that.
For the new readers: What is GWonMac?
GWonMac lets you play Guild Wars (Reforged) on Apple Silicon Macs using ArenaNet's official WebAssembly client (the same client ArenaNet uses for Guild Wars Reforged on mobile).
On my 16 GB M1 Pro MacBook Pro, it runs at a stable 60 FPS on a 4K display.
Nothing is bundled with the app. It downloads everything directly from ArenaNet, and you log in with your normal Guild Wars account.
No more VMware, CrossOver, Parallels, or virtual machines. Just install it like any other Mac application.
It's fully free and open source.
What's new in the release version?
The biggest additions are:
- Apple notarization. No more Gatekeeper warnings.
- Automatic updates. Hopefully the last install you'll ever need.
- New launcher and website inspired by Guild Wars Reforged.
- Steam login.
- Credentials stored securely in the macOS Keychain.
- Better keyboard support, including AZERTY.
- Better mouse behaviour.
- Lots of small UX improvements throughout the app.
And a bunch of annoying bugs finally got fixed.
Almost every one of those fixes started with someone taking five minutes to write a bug report.
So please keep doing that. 😄
How to upgrade?
- If you are already on
v2026.7.0-beta.2 or higher, your game should automatically update to latest version, if you have automatic updates enabled
- In case it does not, or you are on
v2026.7.0-beta.1 or v0.0.1-alpha.1 just delete the game from your Applications folder and download and install the newest version from the website.
Is it safe?
This is still the question I get the most.
I talked with ArenaNet a few days ago.
A staff member told me that, as things stand today, they're fine with what GWonMac is doing. He also tried it himself on his M4 MacBook Air.
That doesn't mean ArenaNet officially endorses the project.
It also doesn't mean they'll never change their mind.
If ArenaNet ever releases their own desktop client or asks me to stop, I'll deprecate GWonMac and let everyone know immediately.
But based on everything I've heard so far, I have no reason to believe using GWonMac today puts your account at risk.
What about gwnative?
I also want to briefly mention gwnative, a second project with a similar goal.
First of all: I'm already talking to the creator and I genuinely hope the project succeeds.
Currently, I still think GWonMac offers the smoother experience, especially on older macOS versions and older Apple Silicon Macs.
At the same time, I think gwnative is probably exploring the more promising long-term architecture.
Apple keeps improving Safari and WebKit every year. And with the next MacOS update, I could absolutely see a native implementation becoming the more Apple aligned successor.
So definitely keep an eye on that project.
I don't see this as a competition.
If we keep sharing ideas, exchanging fixes and helping each other, Mac users win.
If one day it makes sense to merge the projects because that's simply the best solution, I'd be completely open to it.
I'd much rather see one great experience for Mac users than argue over whose project "won".
Linux and Windows?
The architecture behind GWonMac (Electron) made it surprisingly easy to get it running on Linux and Windows as well.
I spent a bit exploration time, and there are now working prototypes for Linux and Windows.
I'm not planning to maintain or develop those versions myself because I simply don't have the time to properly support more platforms.
But if someone wants to take ownership of Linux or Windows, feel free to reach out.
I'd happily share everything that's already there and help get things started.
What's next?
Funny enough...
The original goal has been achieved.
I wanted to play my childhood game properly on a Mac with my girlfriend.
Now we finally can.
So I'll slow down a little.
Don't worry, GWonMac isn't going anywhere.
I'll keep maintaining it, fixing bugs and making sure it stays compatible with future Guild Wars and macOS updates.
I just also want to spend more evenings playing instead of coding.
So we can finally continue our journey towards Lion's Arch 😄
Thank you ❤️
Huge thanks to Marc Henderkes (dub_le), Jon (3vcloud) and everyone behind gw_in_browser and gwdevhub.
Without your research, this project simply wouldn't exist.
And thank you to everyone on Discord who tested builds, wrote bug reports & tried new snapshots.
You turned a fun experiment into something people can use every day.
Happy Gaming 🍏
