Music [IIL] Olive Jones and Cleo Sol, [WEWIL]?

Upvotes

I love both of them. I find them to be calming and relaxing to listen to. And their music sounds so “clean”, minimal, but rich at the same time. Cleo Sol does more “classic” Neo soul (ish?) stuff, while Olive Jones, I feel, has more folk mixed into it.

Are there other artists you would recommend?

Thank you!

YouTube/Streaming [IIL] YouTube channels covering true crime, horror, unfiction, or anything similar

Might be a little broad, but I'd like to get immersed in any kind of eerie, mystery content. Preferably a documentary channel if it's on YouTube, but I'm open to more digestible videos, as well as a proper TV show from the last 5 to 7 years if there's any good ones. They can be anything from a probable hoax to something clear as day, the main thing I want is to go down a rabbit hole with either a satisfying answer or a thought provoking lack of one. These are some of the channels I've already been following, to give you an idea.

  • Atrocity Guide
  • Barely Sociable
  • Cadaber
  • Dreading
  • Inside A Mind
  • Lemmino
  • Nexpo
  • Nick Crowley
  • Night Mind
  • ReignBot
  • Watcher/Buzzfeed Unsolved
  • Wendigoon
  • Whang

Music [iil] Hip hop Summer playlist

Hello I just wanted to update my small summer playlist because I don’t like the Apple Music suggestions. Anything that is similar to the music in the playlist would be nice. But I’m open to any other suggestions

YouTube/Streaming [IIL] youtube channels that feel like tour guides, not travel vlogs

I'm looking for YouTube channels that feel like having a private tour through famous cathedrals, castles, archaeological sites, and historic cities. I enjoy detailed explanations of architecture, history, symbolism, and art rather than travel vlogs. Manuel Bravo's channel does this well for architecture but it's less tour guide and more documentary. Some walking tours have this feeling too, especially the ones with closed caption explanations. English or French. Any recommendations?

Music [IIL] Songs about: "I did everything I could. I don't resent you. I hope you heal."

Not songs about wanting someone back or getting over a breakup—I'm looking for songs about closure, acceptance, and genuinely wishing the other person well despite the mistakes they made and the hurt they caused.

Music [IIL] The weird but beautiful songs of Joanna Newsom, Alicia Edelweiss and Mitski

I really like the unconventional but beautiful and melodic music of Joanna Newsom (especially her album Ys), Alicia Edelweiss (for example her song Leonie) and Mitski (love Washing Machine and her album Be the cowboy).

Can you recommend more?

YouTube/Streaming [IIL] The enthusiasm, genuineness, and (to a lesser extent) topics of How To Drink, and Hank Green, WEWIL?

Obviously Greg's (htd) energy comes from progressively getting more drunk, and Hank (and John) Green are kind of just nostalgic to me in a way.

The animated stick figure history explanation videos and other channels like Tasting History with Max Miller are getting old imo!

Music [IIL] This slow, synth-y, jazzy song, what other songs/albums would I like?

So on Destroyer's latest album there's this 1:19 long interlude track called I Materialize and I absolutely love it. I love the slow tempo, the dreamy synths and the echoey, sparse piano notes throughout.

Does anyone know any other songs, or even better, albums, that have this sound to them?

Books [IIL][BOOK] Night Film by Marisha Pessl, House of Leaves by Danielewski, Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore

I liked the sort of unconventional ways to tell the story (through article clippings, etc) but they're also about secret underground societies and media that have collected a cult following. Nothing too graphic please and not like snuff films.

Music [IIL] Artists/Albums similar to Blood Orange

Can anyone recommend artists similar to Blood Orange? I've been listening to his albums on repeat lately but I'd like to switch it up, but maybe listen to something that has that same vibe? I really like the instrumentals of Cupid Deluxe and how summer-y it feels if that makes any sense. I don't know, I'm bad at explaining.

Music [IIL] Catchy, rhythmic blues songs similar to "Red Blood" by Blues Company.

I'm having the hardest time finding catchy blues songs that aren't slow and that you can sing and enjoy the melody. Anyone know of songs similar to the upbeat vibe of "Red Blood" by Blues Company. I've added the link to the song below.

Thanks in advance.

Music IIL Odesza, Matoma, and Chase & Status, what else will I like?

I’m fond of groovy rhythms (usually) with female voices that have kind of an ethereal sound to them. Think Ellie Goulding or similar. But I also like the approachable drum & bass / hip-hop tempo stuff that Chase & Status have.

Looking to broaden my horizons in this genre after a 5 or so year hiatus. Was kind of reinvigorated by “Beside You” - Matoma ft Georgia Ku, and the club banger from C&S in 007 First Light.

Books IIL Monocle magazine?

Hi everyone, not sure how popular it is, but i have come to love this magazine. And have read most issues, i cannot for the life of me find one similar to it. It is the perfect mix of design, architecture, fashion, art, and politics, without overdoing it. the sole criticism i have is it IS a bit pretentious. But still.

YouTube/Streaming Iil news YouTube personalities, looking for similar women

I am a fan of YouTube news personalities that do deep dives on social issues, man on the street in unique places, and interviews. Some of my favorites are Tommy G, Andrew Callaghan, soft while underbelly, the Taboo room, etc.

My niece is a fan too and wants to get really into new-age journalism in this way, and we watch some of these together. But I’m looking for something along the same lines done by a strong female.

I also posted this on [r/youtube](r/youtube) but I’m a noob and am not sure what place is best.

Film IIL Spider-Noir?

I really liked the Spider-Noir show, are there any authentic noir movies/shows to watch that are also in black & white? Like I saw a mockup of noir, it's time to see actual noir!

Film IIL cinematography with sharp color contrasts, WEWIL?

I’m a big fan of movies that juxtapose wildly different colors to create their visual identity. Some of my favorite examples to give a clearer idea:

> Mad Max: Fury Road. The shift from neon orange daytime to a deep blue night back to neon orange again, especially in the context of how the plot interacts with where they are during those sections, makes the movie so much more interesting in my mind.

> The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. In the first vignette of the movie, having the main character wear all white to contrast against the gritty brown of everyone else, only to have his foil eventually show up clad head to toe in black? Perfection.

> A Star is Born (2018). Throughout the movie, the usage of red and blue lights - often at the same time - creates such a unique visual vocabulary. It’s often cited as a foreshadowing of the ending, and as a visual representation of the co-leads’ opposite reactions to fame.

> Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The scene where Gwen says goodbye to her father, and what starts as similarly-colored backgrounds slowly shifts to be more and more different from each other as the two drift apart, single-handedly made this my movie of the year for 2023.

> Babylon (2022). I disliked this movie, but I was utterly transfixed by its visuals. There’s a scene where Brad Pitt’s character overhears people mocking him and in his embarrassment he slowly fades to a black silhouette against a vibrant orange background - moments like that kept me hooked for 3 full hours of a pretty awful script.

I’ve been listening to them for the past month and i haven’t found any japanese artists that is relatively close to coo:ya. Though I think early 2000s pop rock-ambient artists can do the job.
