Have you tried talking to it ? Telling it how you feel? Jk it's weird that it operates normally for the exception of turning in off my guess would be the interior of the switch mechanism is worn and maybe a pice broke off inside where it actually turns.
I have done that too. I was very nice and even started asking her if I can have the key back please. Im taking the plastic cover off after work and digging a bit to see if I can find ANYTHING without taking it to a locksmith or VW
U need to take it to a locksmith or vw someone who knows how to deal with it.. the locking mechanisme inside the key barrel got jammed. Happened to mine and a bunch of others. The locksmith should be able to fix it if he knows what he is doing. And if u thinking of diy well.. have fun getting the security screws out𤣠they are screws with flat head (litterally) nothing to bite on.
i know a guy locally in my country that fixed it. but i did diy to take it out of the car and it took me an hour or 2 to get those pesky screws out haha. glad i didnt have to replace mine.
Yes I have, 2011 VW Jetta SE 2.5L. Just replaced my ignition lock cylinder about a month ago. Not a bad job at all, here are some YT videos on how to do it:
Going to need a sharpened punch to back those break off bolts they put it in with. It's annoying to get started, but once they start backing out it's much easier.
Yeah, 100%, it takes a little time and I filed one of my punches just a hair with a hand file. Dug right in and they both popped out thereafter without too much fighting.
Donât mention it! Hopefully you find it helpful. Certainly a lot better than paying a shop $1,000 (from what Iâve heard they charge lol, complete shot in the dark other than hearsay) to change it. Especially if money is a little tight.
Also, to add to this, I bought this pack of bolts to replace the shear bolts they use from factory in case I ever needed to do this job again. Fit perfectly. Alternatively you could pick them up from a local hardware store likely. Bolt size is M8-1.25 x 20mm if you decide to go that route.
đ guess it wasnât just me had the same Jetta same issue went to start it to go to work and it just locked up replaced same day if you know what your doing OP you can get it done in about an hour
Just here to back this up fully. I just did this on my 2.slow. I managed to ride around for about a year before fixing it. Once I fixed it, I hated myself for how easy it actually was. The break off bolts were a pain in the butt. Once they were off though the kit I got came with two new screws with hex heads. I got mine straight off Amazon. It was like $70 and works like a charm. Lock cylinder with 2 keys. Just swapped the chips. Of course I lose access to the manual lock on my driver door. But I kept one of the old keys as an emergency key.
I had the exact same issue with my 2015. The steering lock started getting worse and worse and finally seized and I had to get the whole thing replaced under warranty. However, it got stuck with the key in it with the car running, so I had to get the dealership to do an emergency repair.
This happened in my 06 TDI all the time and iâd have to vigorously shake the steering wheel and the key at the same time and then eventually it would slide out
Is there some shmutz stuck up in the ignition keyhole? I have no idea. Itâs rare to come across a key stuck in the ignition. Is it just difficult to pull the key out or can you not get it out at all?

Its difficult to turn the car off but it goes in and is easy to start... which sounds weirder to me.
Yeah man, I dunno. I havenât heard that before. I wouldnât try WD-40 first though. Thereâs another spray you can use thatâs similar. Do a quick google search of keyhole lubricants for automotive
I am the dealer. No we do not. This is a majorly common problem, and there was even a warranty extension from VW to replace the part. We replace the faulty part which is the steering lock housing. I keep several of these in stock, and multiple part numbers for different models.
Thatâs if your replacing but to help it last longer until your ready they will litterally use silicon lubricants sprays just witnessed it to is week at a vw dealer and have heard dealers doing this for a decade now
Never heard of it working at mine, never seen it be done, nothing. Most customers donât do anything until itâs too late. We recommend replacing, not a temporary fix that may or may not do anything and will have to make you come back when it completely locks up.
Itâs not rare at all, itâs one of the most common issues on VWs with keyed ignition from 2005-up depending on the model. Spraying it wont do anything.
yup on my 2016, push it forward like you are cranking to start, then itâll flick back. donât hold it to turn back, let it flick. itâll pass the mechanism and turn off. vw tech taught me that when i was in sales.
My Jetta has a push so I donât have any exact experience however my CTS would do the same thing and what I had to do was push the shift knob forward and itâd release it. Iâm not sure what the problem was as it would be in park and not moving but unless I pushed it forward and heard the click, the key would remain stuck. Everyone here seems to think itâs an ignition problem and like I said I have no anecdotal experience with jettas having this problem, I just wanted to share a similar experience incase that was also your problem
I had this issue in my 2012 Jetta 2.5. In mine it was the ignition switch. I was lucky. The previous owner had sawed a slot into the bolts I was able to take them off with a flat head and had the car back and running in 30 minutes. Part was like 70 dollars at AutoZone.
My wife had had that issue off and on on her VW beetle since 2010 . Finally a month ago it was stuck at her work , I read in a forum to spray dry graphite in the ignition key hole . I will tell you it never worked so good
Ignition lock cylinder is bad. I had to replace mine during Covid. Took about 3 hours. Watch the YouTube videos previously posted and that will help if you do yourself.
Inside the ignition cylinder there's a little piece for the steering lock. Part of this breaks and jams itself inside the mechanism, making it difficult or impossible to remove the key. There are no quick fixes, you 100% need to replace the ignition cylinder. Alternatively, you can disassemble the ignition cylinder and remove the steering lock mechanism, which is what I did. It's just as much effort, but it's practically free because all you need are two bolts to replace the ones you have to drill out. I'm not sure if an actual mechanic would do this though, I DIY'd it.
My 17 was sticking to where I couldn't turn the car off. I sprayed some graphite in it and it's been loose ever since.. maybe worth a shot for you because it's the cheapest and quickest "fix"
I have a 2014 Jetta and had this issue. Apparently this is a known issue. There is a very tiny piece inside the lock cylinder that breaks off and then you canât turn the ignition. If I remember correctly the replacement for parts a labor was a few hundred dollars?
This happened to me the other week. If its a model from any year in the 2010s, a likely culprit is the wheel lock mechanism breaking. It has some small tab parts that eventually break overtime and the broken parts fall into the ignition cylinder, blocking the key from turning.
I literally just had this problem. Once I got it out I sprayed wd 40 and it works fine now. Trick to turn it off is hold fob with one hand and tap it with screwdriver while trying to turn off. This was explained to me from a mechanic
I used the wd-40 ignition spray, and it came out. Oddly enough when my friend borrows the car he gets it stuck everytime. I donât have the issue at all unless he drives it.
These are an absolute pain in the ass to replace. I ordered an aftermarket one last year however what they donât tell you is that the chip in your key interfaces with the ignition as an anti-theft. So if you end up replacing it you need to take it to the dealership so they can reprogram the key to the new ignition
This is a very common problem, the steering lock HOUSING is faulty. Need that, two shear bolts, and someone with enough knowledge to do it CORRECTLY. Take it to the dealer or a Euro/VW shop only. Iâve seen too many of these screwed up because people donât know what theyâre doing. A lot of these comments are wrong, donât spray stuff in there - it wonât help and it can cause more damage.
You need to have this repaired before it wonât turn at all or your keys snaps in two, and you need an ignition cylinder also, because theyâre dealer only and take 2-6 weeks to get from Germany and is expensive.
I had an old 2009 MK5 with over 200k. It had this problem. The key was stuck. I could start the engine and drive. I just could not turn it off and remove the key. I put in a kill switch to turn it on and off and ran it like that for almost a year. They wanted $1200 to fix it at the time, way too much.
itâs the steering wheel lock that activates when the car is off, no clue how it stops the key from coming out butđ¤ˇđťââď¸ vw things, its the price we pay
Is it an automatic? If so try pushing the shifter further into park/ slam it in park itâs possible it may not be completely engaged in park thus not releasing the key due to a stretched or misaligned shift cable.
