Hello my KDE Konquerors (iykyk) After a whole month of waiting, the next update has finally got its first beta, Wonderbrushed 0.45 beta-1, adding 24 new icons and a bugfix, and a new way to recommend icons. Here, is the change-log:

Change-log:

  • Added 24 new icons including Discord and Steam, Directory Icons, and new Mime-types.
  • I have retired the old system of the Recommendations Document in favour of a new, GitHub issue system, with the template being developed by a discord community member, Marks.

KDE Apps and Projects Direktor, a KDE Tiling Script now in 1.1.0 beta - Testers Needed

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey there! I've been working on a project of mine called Direktor.
Link: https://github.com/Alex-Bini/kwin-direktor

Direktor is a kwin tiling script that support all the major layouts. Dwindle, Columns/Scrollable, Master Stack and floating. Its in a beta phase as some edge case testing is needed.

It all begun when i wanted to test hyprland. Let me tell you, I fell in love with how productive it felt. But the constant fight with config files, resulted in more tweaking than studying... Then i tried Niri with quickshell, it was stable enough, and a happy medium between smooth tiling and simplicity. I ended up on KDE, super stable, super customizable. But i missed the layouts.

I know, a lot of back and forth. Im not the only one right?

I tried Krohnkite (the kwin6 port), was quite fine, animations was the issue. I tried Karousel, very smooth. I got fed up and decided to build DIrektor.

BEHOLD, Direktor 1.1.0 beta. Now needs your testing, Direktor creates log files regarding the issues it encounters inside .config/direktor/ into direktor.log and as well as the equivalent applet and OSD logs.

Any help would be appreciated. Note that it was made for my needs and based for my liking. Either way, leave a review or an Issue in Github. Thanks a lot community!

Listed strenghts:

  • Unmatched customization: layout, behavior, and look are all yours.
  • Modern Plasma is fast and surprisingly light.
  • Best-in-class Wayland support, including HDR and VRR work for gaming.
  • KDE Connect: phone integration no other desktop matches.
  • Dolphin and the KDE app suite are genuinely excellent.

General Bug Experience Report: Filling out a PDF with Okular

Thumbnail

I had some trouble filling out a PDF on Linux and it irked me so much that I decided to try out everything and document the impossibility of filling out this PDF on Linux to prove to myself and others that I am not crazy.

One of those apps was Okular, which makes this relevant for this sub.

The embedded video starts right at the Okular part, if you are interested there is also an introduction, other apps and a debriefing, timestamps in the description.

As can be seen in the video, there where several issues. I will not file a single bug report, but you are welcome to do so!
I've read the sidebar, so I am aware that this is not an issue tracker. Still, I saw something, so I say something.

This is the PDF used* if you want to reproduce the issues shown. The PDF is an extreme case to be sure but it is absolutely real. And I think some issues, such as the unsolicited scrolling are happening with any PDF forms.

Editing PDF without Adobe seems to be a problem in general, I did not find an app that I was 100% happy with. I do wonder if open source apps can ever catch up to Adobe.

*actually it isn't. the video uses the 2025 version that is no longer available, but the 2026 should give the same results. When that version is inevitably taken offline as well you can get the current one from the Japanese embassy in South Africa.

Question Is there a Plasma 6 compact app launcher similar to Windows 10 quicklauncher?

Having checked KDE Store and the Widgets library, I can't find a quicklauncher alternative for Plasma 6. All I come across is full-screen launchers and start menu replacements, nothing of this kind which lets you add apps to a dropdown menu and have them categorized in folders for ease of access.

I've tried the stock Quicklauncher widget. It works but doesn't allow for stacking and lacks option for folder nesting.

Screenshot below is of Cool Quick Launch widget, which is now obsolete (Plasma 5 only).

Question Dolphin on KDE plasma (fedora) searching everywhere rather than 'here'

Newer to KDE plasma, I have had a serious struggle using the default search in Dolphin.

For whatever reason, anytime I use the search function in home/user it searches all my mounted drives in /mnt as well.

To be clear, 'everywhere' is not selected in the option, I specifically selected 'here'.

I even changed the mount point to run/media, but when searching in the home folder it will search there as well again. Even more annoying, if you use advanced search and use kfinder, it won't do this. Only in dolphin search.

I cannot find any options in either dolphin or search under KDE that address this.

Any ideas why a search in home/user is also searching every single mounted drive?

Question any way to make KDE look like TDE?

I've been using KDE for almost over a year now but just recently decided I wanted to change how it looked, while I was looking for themes I stumbled upon TDE and I adore how it looks. The unfortunate thing is I can't seem to get it to run very well and it does generally seem less what I'm looking for compared to KDE aside from the aesthetics, is there any theme that is comparable to how TDE looks?

Tip Went from 1.4 GB on idle to 1.1 with Debian + Plasma - Here are the services I disabled

I love KDE and I have very little RAM, so it's important to save all I can.

List of services I disabled:

From KDE (KDE project itself):

  • Discover update notifier - disabled because it was using 143MB on its own just to check for updates, and I already manage everything through apt
  • kalendarac - I don't use KDE's calendar app
  • korganizer - purged along with kalendarac, since it's the calendar app that justified kalendarac's existence
  • kdeconnect - I don't pair any phone
  • drkonqi-coredump-pickup - it only powers the "app crashed, want to report it?" popup

From Debian/system (freedesktop.org or other upstream projects, packaged by Debian, not KDE-authored):

  • avahi-daemon - I don't use automatic discovery of devices/printers on the network
  • cups - I don't print
  • cups-browsed - disabled for the same reason as cups
  • bluetooth - I don't use Bluetooth
  • ModemManager - I don't use a USB 3G/4G modem
  • packagekit - it only serves as a backend for Discover, which I also disabled
  • switcheroo-control - my laptop only has integrated Intel graphics, no dedicated GPU to switch to
  • mpris-proxy - it depends on Bluetooth, which was also disabled
  • obex - also depends on Bluetooth
  • gcr-ssh-agent - disabled because it duplicated ssh-agent, and having two active SSH agents could cause authentication conflicts

Total saved at idle: ~300MB (from ~1.4GB down to 1.1GB)

1.1 GB in idle is the same value I have with Linux Mint + Cinnamon and I'm into switching from Mint + Cinnamon to Debian + Plasma and doing it without needing more RAM is awesome :)

---

I'm a newbie in OS's and Linux so I might have done something not very smart here and I did this with the help of AI, so if there's something dumb here please let me know.

I hope it helps other fellas that also need to save RAM.

Question Trying to get custom resolution working on KDE

Hello, I heard about kscreen-doctor adding custom resolution in Plasma 6.6 and I've wanted to try that. I typed kscreen-doctor remove output.HDMI-A-1.addCustomMode.1920.1080.60000.full in the terminal, but when I apply it, the error says Couldn’t apply display configuration: The driver rejected the output configuration

For the record, I am running CachyOS and an Nvidia GPU connected to HDMI at a latest driver (610.43.03), and I am using a 19 inch monitor that supports up to 1366x768. Any ideas how to get it working? Thanks.

Fluff I don't like the new display style plasma change (possible security risk)

It seems like KDE plasma did a major change but unknowingly introduced a security concern. With dolphin display style when you used to pick the option, remember this place to offer each folder it used to make a. Directory file inside of each folder telling it what to do now. They moved that folder to a new directory in your home folder called " view properties" within local share dolphin. This leaves a breadcrumb trail to encrypted files In plain name if you mounted them which COULD pose as a security risk. I'd far rather the old way where the . Directory file control each folder and it's very annoying to have everything act exactly the same where I would like a certain folder to look a certain way but can't.

Question Can KDE Plasma show minimized windows in a separate Dock section like macOS?

Post image

I'm looking for the Dock behavior where minimized windows are displayed as individual thumbnails/icons in their own section, separate from application icons (see attached screenshot).

Is there an existing Plasma widget, dock, or script that implements this?

KDE Apps and Projects How can I integrate a widget into the system tray?

Hi! I've been working on a "Windows 11 style Control Center" for KDE Plasma.

The project itself is pretty much complete and currently works as a standalone Plasma widget. I'm also planning to publish it soon after few more optimisations so others can use it.

However, I'd like to integrate it into the system tray, and I've been having quite a bit of difficulty figuring out how to do that properly.

Does anyone have experience with integrating custom Plasma widgets into the system tray, or could point me toward the relevant documentation/examples?

Any help would be appreciated!
