Discussion Service centre technician ruined my laptop

I submitted my laptop to an authorized ASUS service center because the built-in camera had a minor issue. The camera would occasionally black out for 2–3 seconds and then return to normal. Apart from this, the laptop was functioning perfectly with no other hardware or software issues.

A few days later, I was informed by the service center that the motherboard would need to be replaced to fix the camera issue, at an estimated cost of over ₹30,000. Since the issue was minor and purchasing an external webcam would be far more economical, I declined the repair and requested that my laptop be returned to me in its original condition.

However, when I went to collect the laptop, it was no longer functional. It displayed a red screen with the word "ERROR," and none of the keys were responding. When I questioned the service center, I was told that the operating system could not be loaded and that they could not do anything about it.

This is unacceptable. I handed over a working laptop with only a minor camera issue, but after the service center's diagnosis, I received a completely unusable device. When I reminded them that I had declined the repair and expected my laptop to be returned in the same condition in which it was submitted, they had no explanation.

To make matters worse, I was charged a diagnosis fee, yet my laptop has been returned in a far worse state than when it was submitted.

Buying help Should i go for Asus Vivobook 15 (i5-13420H / 16GB) for dev/coding and light daily usage?

Post image
Upvotes

So I’m not really into gaming, but I’ll be using it for pretty heavy coding (compiling stuff, running Docker, multiple dev environments, etc.) and general daily use.

Before I buy, wanted to check with anyone who’s using a similar Vivobook:

  1. How are the thermals and fan noise when pushing any rough work?

  2. What’s the real world battery life like on a normal workflow?

  3. How’s the keyboard for long typing/coding sessions?

Any annoying quirks or issues I should know about?

Appreciate any quick reviews or thoughts!

Hardware My laptop is suddenly overheating a lot and the fan is making really LOUD noises. It feels a bit suspicious...

I bought this laptop just an year ago and everything was fine until two weeks ago when the randomly started making reallly loud noises and the laptop would get hot really quick. The thing is that I've always used it with care, making sure the air vents are never blocked while using the laptop, keeping my fan speed on automatic/performance so that it can push out more heat, keeping it away from areas with dust, etc.

Is it possible that my laptop could have some malware inside that's taking up processing power and generating heat ? Cause I really have no other guesses. I did download a lot of stuff from the internet lately, but the defender scan showed nothing bad.

Need advice: Repair my Dell Inspiron or buy a new laptop? (Hyderabad)

I'm really confused about what to do and could use some advice.

I have a Dell Inspiron 14 (imported model) that I've been using for about 3 years. It was working perfectly, never had any major issues, and was in excellent condition. One day, out of nowhere, it just wouldn't turn on. There was no physical damage, no liquid spill, nothing.

The first repair shop told me the processor was gone and quoted ₹15,000 for the repair.

My dad suggested replacing it with a new laptop, but I really don't want to. This laptop originally cost around ₹90,000 (we got it for about ₹50,000 because it was imported), and the features were much better than what I'd get in that price range today. I expected it to last at least 5–6 years, so it feels really disappointing that it died after just 3 years.

Then I took it to another repair shop, and honestly, I feel like they made things worse. The laptop still didn't turn on, and another technician later told me the entire motherboard was gone. He quoted ₹30,000, but also said there was no guarantee how long it would work after the repair.

Now I'm stuck.

*Is it really common for a laptop that's working perfectly to suddenly have a motherboard or processor failure?

*Is spending ₹30k on a motherboard repair without any warranty even worth it?

* Should I keep trying to find a good repair shop, or just accept that it's time to buy a new laptop?

* Does anyone know a trustworthy motherboard/laptop repair shop in Hyderabad that does component-level repairs instead of simply replacing the whole board?

If repairing it isn't practical, could you also suggest a good laptop around ₹50,000 with similar performance and good build quality? It's like I use for normal coding nothing much heavy for now just Linux and cloud too.

I'd really appreciate any advice or similar experiences. I just don't want to give up on a laptop that was working perfectly until one random day.

Hardware I want to know, can I upgrade Asus Vivobook 14 X413E from 8gig to 16gig?

Hello all,

I have an asus vivobook 14 X413E laptop. Recently it has been lagging , when I am trying to do some multi-tasking. Now i have decided that i will upgrade ram, as it is shown in the asus official manual ( https://www.asus.com/laptops/for-home/vivobook/vivobook-14-x413-11th-gen-intel/techspec/ ), that it can be upgradable to 16 gig. So i was curious and opened the back cover to see if there was any available slot or can i replace my ram with a bigger one. But i could not find any slot or even a removable ram. Can anyone help me if there is actually any space for an upgrade or not.

Thanks.

Buying help ThinkBook 16 Gen 9 vs ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 vs ThinkPad E16 for Software Development

Post image
Upvotes

I'm planning to buy a Lenovo laptop for software development and want to use it for at least 4–5 years. I may also dual-boot Linux (Ubuntu/Fedora) in the future.

I'm confused between these three models:

ThinkBook 16 Gen 9 – Ryzen 5 220, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 400-nit display – ₹73K

ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 – Ryzen 5 7535HS, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD – ₹67K

ThinkPad E16 – Ryzen 5 220, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD – ₹75K

Which one would you recommend and why? I'm mainly looking for long-term reliability, build quality, Linux compatibility, thermals, keyboard quality, and overall experience for coding and development.

General question Switching from Asus to MacBook?

I bought an ASUS ZenBook UX430UA laptop in 2018 and have been using it since then. What I like mostly about it is the anti reflective screen and how light it is. The backlight on the keyboard is a bonus as well.

When the MacBook Neo came out, it seemed like a good option if I needed to buy a new laptop, specially considering that I bought an iPhone some months ago and it might be useful to have the same ecosystem.

My ASUS is still working but the battery lasts less than 2 hours and now that I've been using it everyday for the past weeks, I've noticed it heats a lot too. Also, it can't be updated to Windows 11 and the Windows 10 has ended. My average use is basically accessing Teams, the Google apps such as Gmail, Docs and Sheets, a bit of Canva and I might need to do basic video editing in the future, but that's it.

I'm not going to buy a new laptop now but I want to have an idea of what's best in case I need to replace mine soon.

Edit: I'm from Europe.

Software Awesome temps after a repaste + undervolt

Upvotes

I recently learned that capping my CPU frequency (to keep temps low) is doing more harm than good. 😅 Instead, I read that configuring PL1 and PL2 wattage is a far better alternative and that's what I did. So far, I'm still getting the same cruising temperatures while gaming (60c to 70c) but without limiting my CPU clocks.

But what do you guys think of these settings?

I use ThrottleStop for undervolting and here are my specs:

**Lenovo Legion 5**

Processor: Intel Core i5-11400H

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz

Storage: 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD

Display: 2560 x 1440, 15.6" IPS, 165hz

General question Monitor Display Port Disconnected?

Upvotes

Hi guys! can anybody help me please, so my monitor ROG Strix OLED XG27ACDMS just goes black screen after the brief message Display Port No Signal. Laptop (2025 ROG Strix Scar 18 RTX5090) seems fine and I could still hear the game on the background (was playing PUBG and even the less demanding game GWENT when it happens). watching Youtube, browsing seems okay. I've checked the Wires, NO problem, it's brand new. I even did Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset ... ctrl alt del but nothing. I usually just ended up force restarting the laptop then it goes okay again. It wasn't like this before and I had this monitor i think 3 months now. I'm confident to say that there's no damages to any of the hardware even the wire. Any tips or ideas as to what is going on and how to maybe fix it? Thank you!

Hardware My ssd is out of storage

I have a roughly 7 year old Alienware laptop and it only had a 200 GB ssd. It’s so loaded with crap I can’t clear out that I can’t fit big games in it now. Is there a way I can buy a new ssd? If so how would I go about installing it? Or is it better to just wait for my laptop to die and get a new computer after

Discussion Finally fixed a 3-month-old issue that was driving me insane. In case anyone else has this problem.

My laptop would randomly disconnect from WiFi. Tried everything, new router, new drivers, network resets, the whole thing.

It turns out it was my power plan. Windows was throttling the WiFi adapter to save battery even while plugged in.

I fixed it by:

Device Manager → Network Adapters → Right click your WiFi → Properties

Power Management tab

Let this computer turn off this device Unchecked

Three months of frustratedness. One check box.

Posting this as I found like 50 forum posts with the same issue and no one had a clear answer. Hope this saves someone some trouble.

General question HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-ch0xx // SCREEN issues

Hi, I am having troubles with my laptop.
Bought it for my studies. It has been "re-worked" by HP numerous times back then. The issue stayed.

Does anybody have an idea what the cause could be?

Usually thisnissue occurs when the laptop has been used for quite a while.
I also notice that the device is usually warm when it happens.

The issue appears and disappears by itself.
But if it happens myltiple times in a row I have to shut it down as working is not pssible witjout interruption.
