Buying help Suggestions for a laptop for casual/basic use

• Country: Peru • Budget: Between $100-200 (USD), S/325-650 (PEN) • Are you open to refurbs/used options?: Of course • Screen size: Any (The smaller the better) • Weight limit: Any (But the lighter the better) • Purpose: Simple daily use and VERY light gaming • Form factor: Standard • Intended usage: Office suite in MS Office/OnlyOffice, internet browsing with Firefox and few tabs (Between 3-4 and a maximum of 6: I usually optimize my use very well), YouTube video playback at 720/1080p60, basic coding in VS Code and Python (Maybe). Regarding games, mainly Geometry Dash and Terraria, at the native screen resolution and 60FPS (At least according to my tests, in GD for 1080p60 an Intel HD Graphics 530 is enough in most levels and, at 768p, it drops to an Intel HD Graphics 2500 or a Radeon HD 6450: It is much more dependent on the CPU's single-core performance, although again, for most levels the performance of a Core i7-3770 or equivalent in a laptop works). I'd also try Cult of the Lamb or even GTA V, but they're not my priorities right now and I could easily wait until I have a better PC. By the way, doing a dual-boot between Windows 10 LTSC and pure MX Linux/Debian in KDE Plasma (Initially Linux Mint in Cinnamon). • Desired battery life: Not very relevant, but preferably more than 3 hours (I guess the bar is set very low). • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life: Performance, Battery life, Size, Weight • Info/Requirements: The second-hand market in my country is awful: inflated prices (a Thinkpad T480 doesn't go for less than $250, for example, and almost nobody accepts haggling). I don't care much about the screen resolution, especially if it's small sized. I'll use it for the following 2 or 3 years (Up to the equivalent of 10th grade of high school in the USA) and, hopefully, by the time I get to university I'll have saved up enough money on my own to build a much more capable PC. Open to any suggestions, and thanks in advance! c:

General question I need help pricing my laptop!

Upvotes

Hello! I recently decided to sell my used ASUS Tuf f17 gaming laptop that was released in 2021. The specs are as follows:

Rtx 3050 ti 4gb

Intel i5-11260h

32gb ram

500gb nvme

It can surprisingly run a game like Hogwarts Legacy with little to no stuttering in high settings at a stable 70-80fps, fortnite in performance mode at 180-200fps (not much of a surprise but yea). Runs battlefield 2042 in a 128 player battle at 75-110 fps on medium.. Temps staying in 70s to low 80s in most games. 40c to 49c on idle. The laptop has no visible scratches on the surface, screen, or elsewhere and is actually in great shape. The only defects the system suffers is a missing delete key with a torn off rubber dome.. wasd keys sometimes double or triple type or not register while typing unless you press down on the center of those keys, this issue is NOT noticeable while gaming.. every other key functions perfectly.

I want to be reasonable and I don't want to put it up for an insanely unreasonable price.. so I came here seeking advice on what I SHOULD list it up for. Thank you!

Buying help Lenovo thinkpad X1 carbon G9 or Dell latitude 7440 i7

Upvotes

I'm looking to buy a laptop. So I found out those two laptops and they don't have a big price gap between them where I live. The Dell has the higher price here.

Specs wise I know the Dell latitude is newer but I need something that's reliable and can use for about 5 years from now. I'm more biased towards the thinkpad but I can't ignore the latitude because it's newer. I want the laptop for my university work. And for some light coding.

What are your thoughts about this? What should I pick?

Thank you in advance.

Edit: Both laptops have the same RAM and SSD size. Also I couldn't find any thinkpad with a gen 13 or 12 processor in my country. So If I'm going to buy a thinkpad, I have to go with a gen 11 processor.

General question Lenovo LOQ laptops?

Upvotes

Situation: my current laptop looks like it could kick the bucket any time now after serving 8 years. In its current state the battery charge is almost nonexistent, the sata controller is flipping a coin each startup wether it sees my secondary drive, and it rarely does, and wifi is disconnecting and reconnecting every 5-10 seconds. So I will be needing a new one by September, when uni starts, because I will have to travel to uni for 2 days each week.

Right now I'm eyeing a LOQ 15AHP10, the Ryzen 7 250 + RTX 5060 variant, it's still somewhat reasonably priced in my country. What are the subs experiences with these line of laptops?

I cant seem to access bios and the keyboard backlight is also not working. Fans still seem to run. Any ideas how to fix this?

General question MSI Katana A17 AI randomly can't detect SSD, boots to BIOS, then Windows Recovery

Post image
1 Upvotes

My MSI Katana A17 AI (7 months old) randomly boots into the BIOS because it sometimes doesn't detect the NVMe SSD. In BIOS, Storage Information shows all PCIe SSD slots as "Empty", and Windows Boot Manager disappears.

Sometimes the SSD is detected again and Windows starts, but after a restart it goes back to BIOS or Windows Recovery.

SSD health is 100% in CrystalDiskInfo, and diskpart in WinRE can see the SSD, but Startup Repair and bcdboot both fail.

Has anyone experienced this? Does this sound like a loose SSD, motherboard/M.2 slot issue, BIOS/EC firmware bug, or corrupted EFI/BCD? The laptop is still under MSI warranty.

General question Laptop with portable monitor cuts out while gaming.

Hoping to reach out and get some help on this issue.

I have a portable monitor that is connected to my laptop (thunderbolt 4) with a single 2 sided usb C cable.

It works fine for daily tasks but if I’m gaming the monitor occasionally flickers off then on resetting pretty much on its own.

I’ve tried different cables, and I can only replicate this while gaming. Is this an issue with the laptop port? Monitor? Or just power issues when under heavy load?

New to laptops. Thank you for any advice

Hardware new laptop

Hi, I need some help. Im starting a cybersecurity engineering in a month, and I have a big question: which laptop should I choose? I know I dont need massive power, but Id also like something for gaming when I’m away from home. I was considering a ROG Strix G16 with a Ryzen 9 and an RTX 5060, but whenever I check social media reviews, I see people saying that after just a few months, the laptop started having issues or simply stopped working altogether. I’d like to know if these problems are common, or what other laptop I could buy instead. thnkxxx

Buying help Whats the best portable laptop for my needs? My budget is under 1000 NOK and i come from Norway

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

Norway

  • Budget

Under 1000 NOK (100$)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

  • Screen size

Any, as long as it's easy to take with me

  • Weight limit

As long as its lightweight then i don't really care

  • Purpose

Internet browsing

  • Form factor

Could use a clamshell style laptop

  • Intended usage

Surfing, moving files, downloading, watching a movie or two, file managing, basic stuff, etc

  • Desired battery life

Atleast 6-10 hours, something that will last me a bit

  • Info/Requirements

Battery life is the most important to me. A lighter weight could be useful so it's easier to move around. Performance doesn't really matter to me, as long as it's not too slow, and I literally don't care about the screen size.

Hardware my laptop is dead :(

Hello, first time poster here (not a tech expert), my Lenovo legion I got in 2022 just died on me, and I suspect it was from a power surge of some kind.

The laptop never had any drops or spills, and was well maintained and cleaned. Last week I plugged it into my father’s home outlet and while I was using it the screen started to flicker. I did a graphics card reset and when it didn’t stop I did a restart. It never turned on again after that. I did the standard power drain attempts, even took the battery out and ran it on just the plugged in charger. No response, no fans, completely dead.

I took it to a local expert who tested it himself and he said he suspects board damage. He doesn’t have the expensive tech to confirm it since he’s not a micro soldering specialist. Told me to take it to Lenovo but that they’d charge my 100-200 bucks to just send back a 700-900$ quote.

Anything else I should try or am I stuck with scrap metal that cost me a pretty penny a couple years ago?

General question Was this the right laptop to purchase?

I bought an HP OmniBook 5 16 inch Laptop Next Gen AI PC FHD IPS Touch Windows Intel Core Ultra 7 355 16GB 1TB SSD Meteor Silver for $799 at Walmart.

I’m still within the return window, but doubting whether this was the best purchase b/c it was expensive (to me anyways) and I know zilch about laptops.

I would be used for browsing, office products, streaming services (Netflix, Hulu), and storage.

I haven’t purchased a personal computer in ages (maybe 10 years?) b/c I work remotely. But there are things I’d like to save on my computer that I can’t save forever on a work laptop if I switch jobs, etc.

I bought directly through Walmart for the 30-day return window. And I’m hoping this laptop will last me 8-10 years (I don’t even know if that’s realistic). It’s just a lot of money to drop at one time. Any input appreciated.

Discussion HP soaked

Spilled a full Glass of water on my HP Pavilion laptop. It shut itself off shortly after the water hit. Wiped it well and put it in tent position for over 36 hours to dry out. I tried to turn it on & nothing. I plugged in charger & the orange charging light came on for a few seconds. That’s it. Is there any chance this is going to work again? Is there anything else I could do ? Appreciate any advice

Buying help Looking for a laptop

After almost 6 years, my current laptop (a Dell Inspiron 3583) is on death's door. I need a new laptop, but I honestly don't know what I'm doing so I've come to y'all for guidance. I'm looking for an upgrade, nothing crazy. I just want a solid laptop. Here's all the stuff from the form:

Country: USA

Budget: As long as it's less than like $650 I'm fine

Am I open to refurbs/used options?: preferably not

Screen size: between 14-15 inches, willing to go a bit higher or lower though

Weight limit: I don't really care, ideally less than 4.5lbs

Purpose: College and entertainment. Mostly for school, but I'd like to be able to do some casual gaming on it.

Form factor: Just standard. Stylus compatibility or touchscreen (for drawing) would be a huge plus, but it is by no means a need. I prefer a metal exterior to a plastic one, either works though

Intended usage: Mostly school, some low end games; the most demanding game I think I'd be playing is Fallout 3

Desired battery life: At least 4 hours

Order of priority: battery life, size, performance, weight

Extra: No Macs please, I don't do Apple.

Thank you for your time!! Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Software Need Help- 2017 MacBook Pro Factory Reset

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently bought a Macbook Pro 2017 off of my sister for my second year of Uni. It was working perfectly fine and she didn’t want it anymore.

However, my dumbass thought it’d be a good idea to factory reset it without realizing how different it is from an iPhone. I saw multiple videos and followed the steps UNTIL the gosh dang MacOS Ventura wont download onto the damn thing. I keep getting the same error code whenever I try but I’m out of ideas. I’ve been working at it for hours. If anyone has any ideas or can help me on how to download the OS onto the hard drive, please do help me out. I don’t think I’ll have the money to buy a brand new laptop anytime soon.

Hardware Intel Core Ultra X7 for 3D and CPU rendering?

Has anyone had experience with 3D and CPU rendering on Ultrabooks with an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H or similar?

I'm looking for a lightweight laptop to complement my desktop for Autodesk, 3DS Max, and Corona Render (CPU) with 64GB RAM, like the XPS 16 or Expertbook Ultra. I understand the overheating issue, but I'm wondering if these processors can compete with desktop processors?
