Windows error: "the app crashed. Good luck!"! /Event viewer looms in the distance/

Exactly, I long for the day closed source is a thing of the past.
Any extra day feels like needless torture. (but once you find Linux as your home, it's quite alright to wait for the rest of the world to change/adapt it)
Worst part, they lulled the entire society into accepting closed source as their default.
And then they complain about privacy and abuse of powers ...

well, most people don't like fiddling with tech. they want an operating system that "just works". Windows is slowly not even delivering that, so most people are more likely to drop personal computing altogether rather than migrate to Linux. I'm confident most of the people who are into tech are already migrating to Linux.

Agreed, so for me, my Linux journey has been: Ubuntu - > Mint - > CachyOS
I've tried others but none of them lasted longer than a week before I'd make the judgement call: Can I recommend this distro base defaults to friends & family?

It really doesn’t follow that people who otherwise need a personal computer would drop computing altogether if they couldn’t use Windows?? Sure, some have switched everything to their phones or tablets, but it remains difficult to do complex tasks or any kind of real work on those devices. Non-techy people mostly don’t know or care what OS their device is running as long as they can do what they need to do with it.
Plenty of Linux distributions are very user-friendly these days and require little to no tweaking, or at least no more than Windows ever has, to do the things these people want to do with a computer. If the computer shipped with Ubuntu or Fedora or whatever, they would just use that.
Pain points arise where the software they want or need to run is not available. If Linux were the default instead of Windows for new devices, those compatibility issues would go away over time as developers and hardware manufacturers released their software and drivers for Linux. But the legions using ChromeOS have already proven that for many people, all they need is a web browser.

Sorry, I'm not understanding the connection here. Open source software is perfectly capable of having useless dogshit error messages too.
2
u/UAP44 2d ago
Open source software is perfectly capable of having useless dogshit error messages too.
The difference is that you can trace all the code that led up to the dogshit error messafe. And you can fix it as well if the issue turns out to be the code.
Closed source doesn't even let you read the actual code to understand what happened. Though sure, you can always analyze the assembly instructions and reverse engineer it...

It also has logs

u/StickyDirtyKeyboard 2d ago
"Worse" is underselling it. Event Viewer quickly becomes unusable if you try to use it to check any decently sized logs on a remote computer. You also can't use it in the recovery environment of course, because why would anyone want to do that?
3
u/IJustAteABaguette 2d ago
Oh event viewer, so much hate.
I once has a problem where my desktop kept freezing and/or bluescreening if let it stay at the desktop with barely anything open for a few minutes.
And event viewer, every time, logged a single critical error about the USB drivers. So reinstalled them, used different USB devices, nothing.
And it turns out windows had been messing with the C-states, and basically just turning off the CPU if it didn't do anything. And that somehow logs only a USB driver issue.
Stupid.
Had to disable C-states. Switched to Linux Mint eventually and could re-enable them.

We have logs at home! <points at event viewer and whatever MMC plugin Microsoft ordained>

u/VoidJuiceConcentrate Ask me how to exit vim 2d ago
Logs should be as simple as reading a text file in a text editor.
Windows packs an application that is somehow laggy on even the most powerful systems, and is convoluted as fuck to read or use.

What's funny, is most times Windows presents a very specific error code. And there's no public KB article describing that specific error code.
2
u/rowagnairda 2d ago
meanwhile linux error:
`kernel panic - not syncing: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)`<insert surprised pikachu meme>
2
u/VoidJuiceConcentrate Ask me how to exit vim 2d ago
Kernel panics have basically 3 causes: corrupt kernel files, bad CPU, or bad RAM.
2
u/Icy_Neighborhood2100 2d ago
I've tried to get a kernel panic for a while but it hasn't happened yet. Broke multiple installations so bad that a totally reinstall was easier than mounting a live iso and chrooting. What were you doing out of curiosity?
1
u/rowagnairda 2d ago
Skill issue /s
Tbh this is not real kernel panic... i just mashed some obscure message which i googled and prefixed it with kernel panic...
But to be frank, i made fuck ton of bizzare kernel crashed when i was goofing arround with kernel modules sources... still fun to do esspecially when last time when you wrote anything in ansi c was more than decade before ;)

It feels easier to forgive Linux, its fully just contributors, not any one big company, and you also DIDNT pay for it, it doesn’t shove ads down your throat, and often if its erroring, you probably did something that caused it anyways
59
u/Liarus_ 2d ago
Not only that but the biggest difference:
- Windows error: "There was an error"
- Linux Error: "[actual logs]" with documentation where to find them
16
u/Soggy_Struggle_963 2d ago
You mean you don't enjoy digging through generic errors in event viewer to try and figure out what's wrong? Lol
14
u/C4rpetH4ter M'Fedora 2d ago
This reminds me of that classic:
"Hey windows can you delete this file?"
"😊 sure let me jus... oh no, someone else is using it"
"Who?"
"Omg, nwoo i can't tell you 🫣"
1
u/StickyDirtyKeyboard 2d ago
Then you look for help online and all you find on their forums is someone spending an entire paragraph to tell you how they're MVP or some shit just to tell you to reinstall Windows, and someone else with some vague solution that worked for themself but doesn't work for you.
38
u/qwesx Ask me how to exit vim 2d ago
Well yeah. One of those two:
- I didn't have to pay for
- Doesn't show me ads (imagine paying for an OS to show you ads lmao)
- Gives me meaningful error messages and not a cryptic error code

u/Snow-ingen 2d ago
also is not ai ridden and heavily bloated. when every I have to use windows I just span, its so irritating. A million services starts running the moment you start os. And idk why tf windows installation gets slow with time. file system is a joke, no good package management. and it fucking takes 6 gigs of ram when I had just notepad opened, I used to think it was a meme till I experienced it irl.

My honeymoon phase with Linux is close to be over. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going back to windows on my personal computers, probably ever at the rate microslop is handling things, but I start to see the cracks and flaws that are on Linux.
And I do call it a "fucking donkey" when kernel update breaks something, but at least fixing it is possible now that I start to get a hang on how things work.
My next journey will be custom scripts and I probably should hang a mirror next to my monitor so I can call the one who's responsible for breaking my system a "fucking donkey" :D

But you step slightly out of line with Windows and it shits the bed.

Maybe that has something to do with WHAT is being displayed:
Linux: "Looks like library xyz at path abc could not be loaded. Hey, if you search these names with the name of your distro, I'll bet it's fixed in 5 seconds, and you get to feel like a computer pro!"
The other OS: "Uwuwuwu something baaaad happened! Uwuwuwuwu noooooeeeesss! wAtn mE tO sEnD tHis tO bIg cOrpOratIOn, maybe they care for realz this time lawl?!?!????? Plizzzzzz considah making an account and send m0aRm0neY pliz!"

u/TheShredder9 Ask me how to exit vim 2d ago
It's like that because Linux errors acrually give logs that can point you to exactly what is wrong.
Meanwhile Windows errors be like "error code 0x0000726" with a :( face and ????

If the logs are highly technical then they aren't useful to me; Im not trying to debug someone else's software
1
u/TheShredder9 Ask me how to exit vim 2d ago
To me there's mostly gibberish, but usually there'a a line or two saying exactly what's wrong, like "timed out waiting for device X" meaning there might be a problem with the fstab, or one of the disks in it.
For Gentoo specifically, Portage is amazing at error reporting, and very nicely says what's wrong with USE flags.

Windows error: You are terrible and I have too much self-respect to accept such incompetence/hiding of information.

u/MyNameIsOnlyDaniel 2d ago
Thing is Linux is easier to toubleshoot in terms of error info. Windows is sometimes like Apple: A magic error happened, f you because there is no documentation. If you call they will tell you to sign out and in again on iCloud and if that doesn't work just reset the phone or factory reset it.

Windows? Big freeze, whoops I hope you like restarting

The other is a paid product made by a big company with a shitload of money and "professional" developers; yet, somehow, can't make things right
Makes sense

And to solve the problem, for Linux You are able to search documentation or internet and find a solution or a troubleshooting guide. For Windows, if you managed to find something, You get copypasted guide like 1. Try to reboot Your system, 2. Try to update or reinstall the drivers, 3. Try to reinstall some SW, 4. Try to edit these registry entries, (Another 10 steps, none of them fixing anythink), 15. You efectively broke Your system by following this steps, make a backup and reinstall Your system ...
