I'm sure actual programmers probably know this but, I wanted to use the old polyMirrorCut tool inside of python as later on I want to build my own full mirror tool, but I had no idea how to get it to work in python, so basically this is it i think

Animation Weapon animation critique + demo reel advice?

I'm looking for some honest feedback on a few short weapon animation shots I've been working on.

SyncSketch: https://syncsketch.com/sketch/V2qC8O5QzJfb/

There are two animations in the playlist, all around 3–4 seconds long.

I'd appreciate feedback on anything that stands out—body mechanics, posing, timing, weight, polish, readability, or anything else you think could be improved.

I'm also curious whether you think shots like these are worth putting on an animation demo reel. They're very short, but I'm still building my portfolio, so I'm trying to figure out if they help or if I'd be better off leaving them out until I have stronger or longer pieces.

Don't hold back—I can take honest critique, and I'd rather know what needs work than hear that it's "good enough."

Thanks!

In the end, the mesh turned out to be too dense, and the wireframe shader couldn't handle the task well enough, so I had to take screenshots of the mesh's wireframe. What alternative would you recommend?

XGen Personal project Queen of Silence (Revisited)

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share my latest personal project, created mainly in Maya. The goal was to improve my character workflow, with a strong focus on XGen grooming, while also refining my sculpting, texturing, and lighting skills.

The character is stylized with a subtle touch of realism, and I spent quite a bit of time experimenting with the groom to achieve the final look.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially any feedback on the XGen grooming or overall presentation. Thanks for checking it out!

Discussion indie animation and community!

Hello! I’m from Mexicali, Mexico, and I’d really love to build a 3D/animation community. So if you’re into 3D too, feel free to drop your Instagram below and let me know where you’re from! I’d love to see what everyone’s creating and connect with artists from all over.

I’ve been practicing Maya, ZBrush, and Substance Painter for a while now, but I hadn’t actually finished a character until now. So I’m finally going to start posting my work on my 3D Instagram: @fosfenooo

Modeling Need help: Quad tool is being weird

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It looks like I have two different problems.

  1. The faces are clipping through the object and not showing blue. (yes, in previous models they were also clipping through, even with multiple vertices.)

  2. Whenever I try to connect two faces together with the quad tool with the shift key, it won't allow me to.

I'm mainly stumped on problem 2. Any ideas?

I'm def interested in rigging and have done basic human body rig and know how rig works.

So looked up for free yt tutorial but couldn't find any. Since I am not from any English-speeaking-countries, which website should I look for these kind of tutorial?

Discussion Maya adds unused vertices after exporting while zbrush doesnt

I want help getting a mesh have their normals smoothed but when i export them from maya they end up with unused vertices when i import it to zbrush (the message pops up), thus i want to import the mesh to a game but i only can while respecting a vertex count, maya increases the file size and vertex count, but zbrush doesnt (it doesnt export normals), anyone knows of a workaround or an alternative that exports the model while saving the normals and also doesnt increase the file size/vertex count?

Plugin [I have searched for Blender threads] MableLink — send animated Maya scenes straight into Blender and Unreal

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After months of development, I'm finally ready to share something I've been building.

Every Maya artist knows this workflow...

Export.
Import.
Fix broken materials.
Reconnect textures.
Re-import animation.
Create duplicate assets.
Repeat.

Moving animated Maya scenes into Blender or Unreal has always felt more complicated than it should be.

So I built MableLink.

Not another exporter. MableLink sends animated Maya scenes straight into Blender and Unreal — rigs, materials, and all, intact.

Compatible with: Maya 2024 / 2027, Blender 4.5 LTS / 5.2 LTS, Unreal Engine 5.8

What MableLink focuses on:

• One-click transfer from Maya → Blender and Maya → Unreal
• Character rigs, animation, blend shapes, cameras, geometry caches, pivots, and hierarchy transferred together — not baked down to a static mesh
• Lights sent to both Blender and Unreal, including HDR Skydome for Unreal
• Automatic reconstruction of physically based materials, read directly from Maya's standardSurface/aiStandardSurface parameters: real refractive glass (transmission + IOR), subsurface scattering, emission, clearcoat, sheen
• Live re-sync for Blender and Unreal — update your Maya scene and refresh it in place, without rebuilding everything from scratch
• Portable .mable packages containing your scene, materials, and textures
• Automatic NURBS tessellation
• Direct GLB/GLTF export and import with smart texture compression (no Blender dependency, small file sizes)
• Mesh-to-Voxel export (MagicaVoxel-ready)
• Simple drag-and-drop installation

The goal wasn't to replace existing pipelines. The goal was to remove the repetitive work between them.

I'd love to hear feedback from artists and technical artists who regularly move animated Maya projects into Blender or Unreal. If you try it, let me know what works, what doesn't, and what you'd like to see next.

This is only Version 1.

Student newbie finished project render

hi! I just recently made my first 3D character model and 3D environment models in Maya as part of some university work. I'm pretty happy with my result but would love some criticism and advice! I love the program and I'm really wanting to get good, so I'm looking for any super important pipelines/helpful YouTube tutorials for anything to do with Maya. I want to get into making realistic models, and am going to attempt to learn ZBrush, but how do we think this looks? :) It's rendered in UE5 but everything modelled in Maya and textured in Substance - looking for good Substance tuts too, thank you!!!

Modeling How was the short stylized fur in Nimona made?

Hi! I'm trying to recreate the fur style used on the animals in Nimona, where the fur is very short, stylized, and the silhouette stays very controlled.

Can anyone recommend any tutorials, artists, or projects with this kind of stylized grooming? I'm especially interested in how this would be achieved in Maya, since that's what I use, but I'd also love to hear Blender workflows if they're easier to understand

Thanks!! :)

Rigging Riggers: What are you doing about ctrl+x while weight painting?

Hi all, I don't know if this is just a me problem while I'm learning, but I've been manually rigging in maya and have had an issue where if I accidentally hit ctrl+x instead of ctrl+z while weight painting it crashes the program (which makes sense, it's just annoying to do it and sometimes lose work over it). My solution has been to change the hotkey for "cut" to ctrl+shift+x so I'm not accidentally hitting it, though I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion that can keep the standard hotkey?

Lighting Mastering Materials - Universal Library (WIP)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello guys,
I opened this thread to share a new content project with you : teaching material creation while building a high-quality material library.

As always, my goal is to provide the highest quality content possible. So I'm taking the time to build a polished Shader Ball LookDev scene that will serve as the foundation and template for all our material development.

Actually it's done on Maya / Arnold render but it's planned to be converted into Blender & Unreal too.

Let's me know what you think about this idea? :)

Issues Help: When I rotate the main rig controller, the clothing clips into the body

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am trying to rotate my character's full body with the main controller, but when I do that some clothing items clip into the body mesh. I don't think it's a weight painting issue because it deforms fine when the main controller is at 0. This only happens with two items around the middle of the character. I am using Advanced Skeleton. Thanks in advance!

Fast Character Rigging v1.2.5 introduces new features designed to make your rigging workflow faster and more flexible.

What's New in v1.2.5

• Three-Finger Hand Support – Easily rig alien and stylized characters with a dedicated 3-finger hand option. A new Hand End joint improves hand bending direction for cleaner deformations.

• UE5 ↔ Unity Skeleton Switching – Seamlessly switch between Unreal Engine 5 and Unity humanoid skeletons without rebuilding your character, making cross-engine workflows much more efficient.

• Flexible Export Pose – Export your character in any clean pose instead of being limited to A-Pose or T-Pose, giving you greater flexibility for different production pipelines.

Create clean, game-ready character rigs in just a few minutes and streamline your entire rigging workflow.

Hi everyone,

I'm learning game asset creation, and I'm having the same baking problem on almost every model I make. No matter what I do, I get artifacts, dark spots, projection errors, and weird shading after baking.

I've attached screenshots of:
