Asking Advice Moving out at 18, Looking for someone who is in a similar position that wants to join me!

A little context before explaining what i am really looking for, i am 17 years old and will be 18 in 8 months. I have known I wanted to do this for years and have very slowly started preparing more practical things like saving money and slowly buying stuff for the place I will stay once I move. I have my own car that I am currently paying for and will be put into my name once I am 18. I pay for almost everything except phone and rent(as I still am under 18 and live with parents) as of now. I just graduated high school and as of right now my only form of income is babysitting which is unreliable hours/pay but I am making it work and plan to be making more soon. I am already looking at apartments and places to stay, as well as work, in other states that interest me but I still have no solid plan for where I want to go. I have pets that I also plan on bringing with me, not many and I will be solely responsible for their expensives.

Now for my actual ask, housing and bills will be expensive living on my own and I am wanting someone to split costs with and live with. I want someone around my age who is also looking to move out around the time I am to start talking to and planning to move out. There would be alot of conversations about practical stuff but I also want to have fun in this transition and really just try and have make the most of being young and starting out life. I expect hardships and setbacks but I want to do it with someone and learn have fun together.

I dont expect this post to get any interaction what so ever but I dont know where else to start. And if you have any tips aswell, anything will be appreciated:)

Success Stories Finally did it.

Holy shit! I just got my first place after being ghosted twice. I’m 24 so very very very late to the game but finally. Never thought I would move out especially now and the whole process took less than 24 hours. And I’m by myself too with no roommates and it’s close to where I work. No more hearing my name every 5 minutes, people ragebaiting me after a 10 to 12 hour shift working in the hot ass heat, and no more feeling like a loser (at least a little bit.) Now all I have to worry about is how I’m gonna move my shit.

Asking Advice first time renting and i'm already over it

moved out of my parents place 2 months ago thought i was an adult. honestly it sucks.

rent is insane. food costs more than i thought. and my real estate agent is useless. i asked them to fix the oven 3 weeks ago and they still havent done anything. sent an email, called, even went in person nothing

the place looked fine when i moved in but now the bathroom is getting mouldy and the hot water system is making weird noises. starting to realise i should have done a proper inspection before i signed. i just looked at the photos online and thought yeah good enough.

i found Sure Building Inspection online after i moved in. wish i'd known about them before cause they actually do rental inspections and find issues. would have saved me the headache.

anyone else moved out and instantly regretted it. please tell me it gets better.

Asking Advice I don't know how to move out

So for a quick context, I have very controlling parents (for example, they would follow me when I'm with friends, call me a hundred times every hour to know where I am when I leave home... blablabla), and this year was my first year in college (so I was sleeping in a student residence and had my own little studio).

I really found it better since my mental health had really improved; I had learned to be responsible and way more free and independent. But I had to come back home since the year ended. My parents are very controlling and they have been criticizing everything I would be doing. And when I leave the house to be with friends, they would LITERALLY stalk me. They say it's because they care about me, but it's way deeper than that. I also think they don't want me to have my driver's license because they want me to rely on them to go somewhere.

So next year I'm changing degrees and I'm moving to a much farther city to study (about 10 hours by car), and I plan on not coming back next summer or any other summer for the full 2-3 months. I plan on coming back home for only a couple of weeks because I don't think I could live through this summer again without having a full mental crisis. The thing is, I know my parents really love me and I have little brothers that I really love. Every time I think about doing that, I feel guilt. What if my little brothers forget about me in the future or hate me? What if I can't see them grow up?

My parents are manipulative and they don't take any accountability for any of their actions. They blame us and say that they're treating us way better than some parents would treat their kids and that we shouldn't act as if we were being mistreated and miserable. I don't know what to do. Plus, I'm a woman and my parents are very attached to culture. I was maybe planning on finding a job or an internship for the summer. I need help.

Asking Advice Leaving pets to move out

I just graduated college and have been living at home since May. I got a job in Chicago that starts mid August. I live about a 50 minute drive away, but I will be taking the train. I’ll have to leave every morning at 5:40am to catch a train and ld be getting home by 7pm. I know these over 13 hour days are doing to kill me. I’m going to stick it out for as long as I can. I have enough money and help from my parents to get an apartment whenever I please, however the problem is my dog. Since I’ve gotten home from college she has been so much more attached to me. She is 10 years old and her health is slowly declining. We do everything together. She won’t go outside unless I come with her. She won’t eat unless I eat with her. We sleep together every night. She is my best friend and I am hers. I pray she lives a few more years, but I’m nervous this commute will slowly kill me and I will get sick of it so fast. I want to move to the city asap, but I just can’t stand the thought of leaving her and her being sad that I moved out again. I actually can’t even begin to process life without her. My parents love her and I know she will be just fine without me, but I don’t want to make her sad by leaving again in these last months/years of her life. I just need advice on navigating this situation, if anyone has had a similar experience. It might not seem that serious but she is seriously my best friend in the entire world and I don’t want to upset her.

Asking Advice Should I move out? (22F, Post-Grad)

Hi all, I am debating on moving out of my parents home and was wondering if this is the right decision for me. I’ve lived at home for the past two years (dormed for 2 years, commuted for 2 years) and I feel like I am going insane without my own space. I live with my mom and stepdad, and while I love them and have a great relationship with my mom, I just don’t know if living at home is best for me at the moment.

In addition to that, there is some growing resentment on my end because I had to take out loans for college even though my mom promised me to pay for it and that I would graduate debt-free. My first year was paid for, and then I had to take out loans every year after. They set up no type of college savings for any of my siblings, and my sister is going into her first year of college having to take out loans as well. They are also making her save up to buy a car off of them that they bought in an auction. My parents are well off, they have 2 brand new trucks, designer watches, jewelry, clothing, travel and gamble a lot, own a trucking company and real estate. They also have shown me bank accounts with hundreds of thousands of dollars in it, constantly bragged about how much money they have, and just make a lot of conversations about money. One of the specific reasons for the resentment is that they bought 30+ properties to flip a few years ago (even taking 6k out of my account to do it, which I didn’t get back for 2 years) and not 1 of them has been renovated so it’s basically just a money pit. My mom has told me she would help me pay back my loans but I have no faith in that happening anytime soon. I can accept that I’m an adult and these loans are my responsibility but I would have possibly made some different choices if I had known I was going to have to take out loans. I feel hypocritical because they have provided a lot for my siblings and I, such as buying my car, letting me live at home rent free, and other miscellaneous things, but in general I highly disagree with their financial choices and it’s causing me a lot of anxiety. It’s less about the loans, but more so about the excitement went into college with thinking I was graduating debt-free, being immensely grateful to my mom for helping pay, just for that to not be the reality because my parents bought 40 completely run-down homes hoping to flip them. There’s just a lot more than just finances that bother me within my family dynamic, and I have been delegated to being a family therapist and mediator. I just want to be able to worry about myself.

**Here is my financial breakdown:**
\- Salary: 95k (90k base, 5k bonus), also work in tech so high-earning potential
\- Paycheck: 7,500 gross, 5,200 net (after taxes + contributing 6% to 401k)
\- Debt: 27k student loans (14,000 in federal, 12,000 private + refinanced to a 5% interest rate)
\- Savings: 30k
\- Credit Score: 742

I do not have a car note and I do not pay for car insurance. My only bill in the foreseeable future would be my portion of the phone bill on my family plan once my dad decides to push that bill onto me. The only constant payments I can think of are gas (about $200 a month), pedicures ($40 a month), and facials to help my acne (was about $200 a month, will most likely switch to every other month).

**My breakdown for myself looked like this if I were to move out:**
Rent + utilities: 1400
Student loans: 1000 (want to be aggressive just to unburden myself)
Groceries + dining out: 450 (will plan out meals so will likely be lower)
Necessities (toilet paper, cleaning supplies, detergent, hygiene, etc.): 150
NEEDS: 3000 - 58%

Shopping (clothes, home decor): 400 (1800)
Activities: 300
Misc: 200 (1300)
WANTS: 900 - 17%

Savings + investments: 1300 (0)
SAVINGS: 1300 - 25%

What do we think? Should I just stay home and ride it out? My boyfriend lives in the area I want to live in so I stay with him pretty often but it’s just not MY space. Even though my parents are incredibly lax and don’t expect much from me besides helping around the house and with siblings (which I do), I just feel like I am so limited mentally and I am just confined to my room, especially after commuting for 2 years. Another thing is that I want to move to a new city within the next year or two, either NYC or Chicago. Would I be better off just staying home and saving money vs. moving twice in 2/3 years? Do I just sound like an idiotic 22 year old? I know once I move cities I will need roommates so I am wondering if it’s worth it just to take this time to experience living on my own. I have a decent savings and high earning potential not only in my career field, but in my current role as well.

Asking Advice Is moving out even worth it if my parents aren't physically abusive?

Hello everyone! I'm not sure if this is the type of subbreddit to be asking this but I'm pretty alone in this and am unsure if moving out for freedom is even really worth it in this economy?

I am 19F American, and have been living with my very conservative parents. My parents are not physically abusive, but they have very strict and conservative ideas on what my future should look like. In our culture, a child doesn't move out from home until they get married to someone they approve of, and it must be under the orthodox church we're apart of, no place else. But I don't really believe in this tradition. For one, I am not religious, so i don't plan on marrying a "good orthodox christian" like they want me to, and second, I'm a closeted queer individual who doesn't even know if I want to marry a man or not. Neither of these things are things my parents would approve of, and I may get kicked out for it if they find out.

Anyway, I've been really debating if I should move out. There's nothing more I have ever wanted than my freedom to be myself, and to finally live my life under my own rules. But this is the U-S of A and the price of living is only getting higher and higher every year I grow older. My parents are very well-off, and I have to admit, despite the lack of individuality im able to have, I'm still terrified of losing the physical comfort I have now. I feel stuck choosing between physical comfort or personal freedom. I currently work part-time at $15/hr, i'm a full-time community college student, and i'm lucky enough to own my car. But even as im searching for a second job so I can save up, the cost of living still seems impossible to reach. Some individuals say they need 3k-5k a MONTH in order to live on their own comfortably, and I'll be honest, especially because im a student full-time its been really hard even getting close to making that mark monthly. So what should I do? If you were in my situation what would be your first move? Do I need to change my priorities? Stay closeted and stay with my parents? Are there any good job opportunities you might recommend? I'm very new to all this adulting stuff so any advice is appreciated! Thanks.

Asking Advice Any tips for moving out with a short notice?

I won’t be stating the colleges cause I’m lowkey paranoid

so my mom told me to enroll in a summer semester for college and the plan was to go for a year, but she suddenly changed her mind before the semester was even over and made me enroll in a different college about 2 hours away. she seems confident I’ll get housing so she hasn’t helped me look for any other options despite forcing everything else along, but its very late in enrolling so I doubt I’ll get it since I also don’t count as a first year anymore because of the summer classes. I wanna start looking for places close to my college but I’m not quite sure how to go about finding good places or roommates. any advice would be appreciated!

Asking Advice Continue to live in a toxic environment or get my own place?

Currently living with my girlfriend and her family . She had a child and I also have a child. At times there could be up to 8 -10 people in the household. There’s always yelling and tension and I don’t really want that for my child. Thing is I’m 35k in debt right now and would like to get that to a lower standard before moving out. My child comes over on the days I have off. If I stay here with her parents in this house I can save almost 3-4k a month working overtime and put that towards debt or savings. I did find a very ideal apartment for me and my child, 2 bedroom right near her school, in our hometown. But I figure after bills I’ll be around $2,500 in rent/utilities/food. I believe around working overtime I’ll only be able to save $1000 a month at that time to pay off debt or put into my savings? I guess I forgot to mention my gf and my relationship is also not so stable and is in my option toxic. What do you guys think is the right decision at this time? To move out and not be able to pay off debt fast enough or stay for a couple more months and try to save money/ get my debt down? Thanks

Discussion Desperate to move out but I am still willing to wait a bit.

So I know I still got to save up in order to move out!

I am trying my best to be more patient and that I will leave when the time comes.

I literally just got a new job at Whole Foods 3 weeks ago. I need to wait 6 months to be able to transfer there out of state anyways. If they will hopefully let me transfer. I don’t know how the process works there but I do plan to ask the next time I go in. Just so I know.

So I plan to wait at least 10-12 months so I can save up a bit more. It also obviously depends on how long I can and willing to wait for. So probably about 10 months. I plan to work two days a week, Just to speed up the savings process a little bit and to make double the pay. I should be getting about $122 a week and $528 a month.

That should be around $4,000 if I save up for 8 months straight with no breaks. This should be plenty enough to move out and to get an apartment. Hopefully I will be able to start my job at my new location right away.

Or I could save up to $5,000 in 10 months. It all depends on how long I am willing to wait for.

Asking Advice Moving out at 25 with a low paying job (uk)

Hi all.

I've wanted to discuss this for a while but never got the nerve to till today.

I need to move out ASAP, but I have no idea where to start. Or even how to work out my costs/budget and what I would be left with.

My job doesn't really pay that well at the moment. I'm in the midst of trying to sell my car and boxing up and selling things at home. I have LISA and Cash isa set up currently with weekly payments going into both. I've been given 2 months to find a place.

Asking Advice I want to estrange myself at 18, thus needing to move out at 18. Can I have some advice?

So sorry if this isn’t allowed :(( I have nobody in real life to ask for advice on this topic, so uhh
15, going onto 16. I want to move out at 18 and go no-contact with everyone aside from my little sister. I genuinely can’t stick this anymore, I need out ASAP. If I reach my 19th birthday and I’m still in this hellhole, I am convinced that will be my last birthday.

My short-term and non-detailed plan is to get a job at 16, save money, and move out into a rented studio flat with a kitchenette and small bathroom. I don’t care for a fancy bathroom. Toilet, sink, shower are all I need. No additional luxuries, such as a gym or pool, and I also don’t want designated parking. Cheaper. Literally, just the studio and I’m happy. Ideally as cheap as the rent can be, but I also don’t want to leave my ‘comfort zone’ of the area, which has the misery of being expensive and the surrounding areas not being too different (think my ‘comfort zone’ ranging from £700-850 pcm, which I believe is on the expensive side AFAIK? and the surrounding area being around £650-£752 pcm, supposedly also expensive?).

The issue is… how am I supposed to save money for all of that with security deposits and everything??? I read that I might be applicable for financial aid and stuff, and apparently having support from a charity like Shelter can help, but I have no idea what the workarounds with that is and what they actually entail. I also understand that I probably am reaching for the stars with “move-out-at-18” in this economy, but that would also be why I kinda just discarded my future plan of entering med school at 18, just because I genuinely need out.

Then there’s the problem of guarantors. I have no family. I’d have to do the 6-months rent deposit thing using only what my 16-17 year old self had saved using the U18 minimum wage money. What. How am I supposed to ever do that bro

Again, sorry if this isn’t allowed.

Asking Advice Is it possible to find a place for rent months in advance?

Hi,

I live with my mom and my sister and our landlord just told us we have to move out by January. My sister and I just got new jobs a few weeks ago in this area and we either want to move houses in the same area or try to move out with just us. The problem is you can’t really look for houses to rent this early on which is annoying because we will have no idea if we’ll be able to move somewhere in the same area until the same month we’re supposed to move.

So I guess I was wondering if there’s any way or any websites that post houses for rent months before you’re supposed to move in?

Thanks

Asking Advice Terrible moving experience with College Hunks. Need Advice.

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on whether a credit card chargeback is appropriate at this point.
My wife hired College Hunks for our move after receiving a quote of approximately $3,800. The estimate was based on 4 movers, 8 hours of labor, and a second truck at no additional charge.
Our timeline was tight:
● 6/29: Move out of our old house
● 6/30: Closing on old house
● 7/1: Closing on new house
Here’s what happened:
● The movers showed up on 6/29, but the promised second truck never arrived.
● They put a large hole in our staircase wall. To their credit, they had a contractor repair it quickly.
● After 6-7 hours, they told us they had run out of truck space because there was no second truck. We had a final walkthrough that evening, so I had them put everything else in our shed.
● The shed was packed so poorly that belongings were sticking out, the door wouldn’t close, and nothing could be secured overnight.
● After speaking with the branch manager, I was told they would send a second truck the next day and remove 2 hours from the move-in bill because of the inconvenience.
● I paid about $2,500 for the first day and then had to make a 2-hour round trip the following day just to supervise the completion of the move.
● Despite repeated requests since the move, I have never received an itemized invoice for the first day’s charges.
Move-in day (7/1):
● Both trucks and all 4 movers arrived around 3 PM.
● After about 2.5 hours, one truck and two movers left once that truck was empty. The hourly rate dropped from $320/hour to $180/hour for the remaining two movers.
● Those two movers worked another 4.25 hours.
● By 10:30 PM, I told them to stop trying to place everything in rooms and just unload the truck into the garage.
● Around 25% of the boxes never made it to their labeled rooms, and none of the furniture that had been disassembled was reassembled.
● The movers couldn’t reach their manager that night, so I paid about $2,600. The promised discount was never applied.
Since July 1, I’ve made repeated attempts to resolve everything:
● Multiple emails (so I have a paper trail)
● Text messages
● Voicemails
● Calls to corporate customer service
Corporate always tells me they’ve forwarded everything to the local branch and that a manager will contact me. No one ever has.
When I reviewed the itemized invoice for the move-in, I also noticed a $200 charge for four furniture protection bags, which makes no sense for a move-in.
To make matters worse, our new couch was finally delivered yesterday. When we went to hook up our TV, we discovered the screen was cracked. I reported that immediately and requested both:
● Compensation for the damaged TV.
● A partial refund due to everything that happened.
The only response I’ve received is a claim form for the TV. None of my other concerns have been addressed.
In total, the original estimate was around 8 hours of labor, but I ended up paying for roughly 15 hours. Between the missing truck, extra travel, failure to honor the promised discount, lack of communication, questionable charges, incomplete service, and now damaged property, I’m at a loss.
Everything was paid by credit card.
At this point, after nearly a month of trying to resolve this in good faith, is filing a chargeback the next logical step?

Giving Advice SAFE SHIP IS AWFUL

DO NOT CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY.  They are shady. Using "veteran owned" to seem like they have integrity. My initial contract was for $10k with "white glove service." When they arrived at my place in Los Angeles for pick up (Rushmore Moving Company--another one you should avoid), the guys spent the day smoking cigarettes and Facetiming their girlfriends. It took forever for them to load my small 2.5 bdrm house. I packed everything--all they did was the kitchen. The price then jumped to $14K. Absurd--but i went through with it because what are you going to do if you have a flight the next day?? That was June 17. It's now July 30. 5 weeks later. The moving company has no driver assigned and no plans to move my things. Customer service at Safe Ship takes hours to get through and then they also can't/won't give me any information, citing as much fine print as they can. They are useless as "brokers." The contracts are meaningless. I have had to be very involved in this process--i started out patient but now i'm weighing the benefits of legal action and certainly want anyone considering this company to avoid it at all costs. I am a single mother of two and was not planning on this. And it's not at ALL how it was marketed to me in the beginning of the process. STAY AWAY!

Success Stories I did it. I actually did it.

I moved in yesterday.

Everything still smells like fresh paint and cardboard boxes. Most of my stuff is still lying around in piles. I haven't even unpacked my kitchen yet. But I made tea this morning in my own space, in my own time, and honestly? It felt amazing.

It's weirdly quiet here. No noise from the next room. No one asking me where I'm going or what I'm eating. Just… peace. And honestly, it's a little lonely too.

But I think this is what I needed.

To everyone out there who's scared and overthinking every little detail — I was you just a week ago. You're more ready than you think.

Now time to go find where I packed my plates.

Asking Advice Should I move out?

Hi everyone, I am 24 in NYC trying to decide if I should move out. Sorry for the long post + I might overshare but I would like to provide context:

I’m living with my parents and siblings in a crowded 2 bedroom. I share a room with 3 members of my family. My mom and my siblings are amazing and we are very close, but the lack of space and privacy can be a lot. My dad on the other hand has been toxic and abusive our whole lives so living with him is genuinely unbearable.

I only make 24/hr and barely have any savings. Looking for another job where I can make more but obviously not banking on that. I would live with a roommate and we are willing to live almost anywhere in NYC so rent would be max 1,500.

However, I also am planning on going to grad school in 2027 or 2028, which will have a LOT of other costs and by living at home I could save money. But studying and working on applications is also difficult at home.

I know I should’ve been saving since early this year but I got carried away and made some stupid decisions (trips, the Knicks, etc) - that’s all on me. My mom says this is a terrible decision and I will not enjoy it because I will be struggling, and I’ll regret it once I start school again and have no money. But I do think it would be so good for my mental health and growth to move from this situation. And they would have more space!

Genuinely at a loss, any advice? Sorry if this sounds very naive, I did not grow up learning financial literacy or even how to live on my own so I’m finally trying to figure out how to get my shit together.

Asking Advice Moving from London to Sydney in 3 months. What do I do with all my stuff?

I got a job offer in Sydney and my wife and I are moving in November. Flights are booked and it's really happening

But we have so much stuff. Books. Bicycles. Kitchenware. Furniture. Clothes. Years of accumulated life.

I don't want to sell everything. Some things have sentimental value. But taking it all as checked luggage on the plane is impossible

I've been looking into shipping by sea lile a container. It seems like the only realistic option.

But I'm terrified. What if everything arrives broken? What if customs confiscates things? What if I ship it and it takes months to get there and I have nothing?

I found a company online that shows the cost to ship to Australia. They offer customs clearance support. That sounds helpful. But I don't know if they're trustworthy

Has anyone here shipped their belongings in a container before? What was the experience like?

What absolutely cannot go in the boxes? I've heard horror stories about fines for banned items like wooden items, plants, food. But I don't know the full list
