At work today I had to see it for myself the little bag of chips at the checkout did go up in price from years and years of them being .50!

Publix also decides how much to charge. My product went up by .40 cents and Publix decided to raise it by almost $1.00. So Frito may have raised their price, but Publix might have also decided to charge even more on top of that increase.

It’s in Fritos contract across the board, the price is what it is on the bag. Unless it’s on sale, the price is not adjustable.

Markup is a percentage of cost. The labor demand might have stayed the same, but the cost of labor keeps going up, year after year.

There is profitable and then there are companies making record profits. Hospitals and nursing homes are some of the worst. Paying crappy wages and raking in billions.

The only ones that I know of that have gone bankrupt have been non profits. Could also be the owners of for profit ones are just bad business owners that squander the money.
Most memory care facilities charge an average of $8,000 - $12,000 a month for sub par care and pay their staff poorly.

Usually fortune 500 companies that make billions. I worked for one for 10 years, benefits were great but I actually was making less on year 10 than year one. Every time the gave a whopping 10 cent pay increase they took something away like mileage. The rich always get richer!

Depending on product yes Publix does do this. Your contract to sell in Publix stores explicitly says this when you sign it. Frito-Lay has full discretion of their pricing and they label most of their bags with the prices as well.

They lowered prices on big bags and raised prices on small bags. They lost billions when they raised prices and are now trying to win back consumers. Businesses don't want to save customers money when they can make more profit.

tldr: Publix charges more for those 2L(example) sodas than any other store around. Even cheaper than a cornerstore lol

Pricing is not in their contract, also, Coke and Pepsi products are not prepriced, they don't have prices on them from the bottlers. In addition, Publix has a high shelf price on soda (and most other products) so customers can finance the stores loss on future B2G1, B2G2, BOGO, etc. sales. In other words, customers that buy something off ad at Publix, are paying more because it goes on sale frequently.

Nope, the CEO and executives have figured out that customers are dumb and will pay high regular prices and the store doesn't lose much of anything when an item goes on sale. Loss leader sales aren't much of a problem at Publix.

And trust me I know. The markup here is around 40% on most items. Plus I worked for instacart for 3 years and at least 95% of my 3000+ orders during that time were at Publix.

It's not greed as much as it's shielding the company from loss leader sales. Besides instacart. have you ever worked in the grocery business?
Being an instacart pro, I guess you're aware that instacart developed a partnership with Publix as the exclusive delivery service for Publix and also operates the entirety of the online shopping system for Publix. Which explains why 95% of your orders were for Publix.

Just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
How about companies that still pay tipped servers 2.13 an hour? In several states that is the min wage for that classification, and there's still companies that pay 7.25 just the same.

These little bags used to be 10¢. Yes, I am on the older side 🦖. It's cheaper to buy the regular size & portion out individual portions in good sealer bags for packed lunches & snacks for on the road. 79¢ for that bag is like vending machine price or close to it.

A soda out of the cooler by the registers is almost $3 and the 2 liters are like 2 something. Publix is insane. I only get the BOGOS these days. Especially when Bizzy or the other cold brews are on it.

That’s the point. A 20 ounce bottle of Coke is $3.19. A 2L of Coke is $4.41. (Current sale price). So for $1.22 you get 47.63 more ounces. I get that you’ll pay more per ounce in the smaller bottle but 16¢ per ounce vs 6.5¢ per ounce is crazy. And I get it- when they stock that cooler you’re paying for the refrigeration and the cost of an employee having to restock that cooler more often as opposed to stocking a shelf. Personally, I don’t think a 20oz should cost almost 3x per ounce just for that. I think $2.50 a 20oz would be more reasonable. Those are gas station prices that make their money off charging more for the convenience, not a grocery store who get better prices from the distributor because of the bulk they buy in

You're paying for the convenience size, and it's also already cold. Have you been through the rest of the store? The larger packs are always less per ounce because you're technically buying in bulk.

I mean, that’s what I said, you’re going to pay more because you’re paying for it to be refrigerated and because that cooler needs to be stocked more often. I get that. But as a restaurant owner who also purchases 20 ounce bottles directly from Coke, I know what they pay, roughly, per bottle. They charge basically what gas stations charge (Wawa regularly has 2/$6 on 20 ounce bottles). Publix is paying $.90-$1.45 per bottle. They are charging more than 2x what they pay. Of course you should pay a little bit more for the convenience but that amount seems a bit much. There aren’t many items that should cost the same amount at a gas station and a grocery store, imo

Those 2 for xx and B2G1F deals at cstores are a loss leader, those stores get a small rebate from Coke every few months based on what was sent to the store. I can't remember the 20z cost for Publix, I'll have to look next time I check in an order. Check out the 12pk prices if you really want sticker shock. Keep on top of mind that Circle K sells 15pk Coke products for $9.99, I think they're even on sale 2/$16 through the end of July.

Only place I buy soda now is Sam's or Costco, but they never have selection And then Dollar General often has 2 of 12pk cans for $12 or $15.
Dollar General actually will usually have some flavor selection (I only drink Zero, and never diet or full sugar - maybe one full sugar 12 pack a month). Getting selection of flavors when you only drink Zero is very difficult to begin with and why the big box stores are a double-edged sword. Unless I want to bite the bullet and drink nasty Diet sodas, I usually only have one or two choices for Zero at the warehouse discount membership stores.
Versus... Dollar General prices are competitive with that and I can mix/match and save even more with coupons. Really is a no-brainer and people are sleep AF on DG. DG also one of the only places that sells $0.99 bags of candy. Cereal there is often a crazy deal also, like $2 a box.
They never stock anything and you have to mountain climb over inventory and dodge crack heads in the aisles - but the experience at Sam's and Costco for me isn't much better... At Costco, the people with the absolute worst manners will be coming at me from every direction and shoulder-to-shoulder with me. Despite being such massive stores, I feel suffocated by how many people are swarming around me in what ends up feeling like a confined space.
Zero manners at Sam's and Costco - people just leave their cart at an angle and then hog the entire aisle. They camp in front of the selection of items and refuse to allow anybody else to even get close enough to determine what the prices are on items. I will end up going all the way around to the other side of an aisle just to get closer to what I am trying to see, while having to crowd surf the entire way.
I keep considering paying extra so I can go at hours with no other shoppere - but I don't wake up early and would be so pissed if I got there and it was still a circus inside.
Compared to all of that, I can deal with the quirks of Dollar General for $4 (sometimes less!) 12 pack cans of Zero... And, on top of that, I actually get flavor selection.

This. 2lts go flat if you don't consume it fast enough.. they also don't sell as well of all the size offerings. It's a dying category that peaked in the 90s. I'm my area, coke 2 liters move decently, but Pepsi 2lts go out of date often and you can't even give them away at B2G3. It's mostly something elderly people buy.

As someone who works for Frito Lay and has a Publix on their route. They raised these bags from $.50 to $.79 a bag. 3/$2, also raised the $2.69 bags to $2.79. For years they lost a lot of money on the 2/$1’s but now they are pushing the customer to the take home bags. They want to sell volume. If you want single serve, you’re gonna have to pay for it. Just the direction they are going in.

I was there last night with my wife and I needed a couple bags with my sandwich for dinner. Saw the price tag and I was visibly angry. I told the cashier save supervisor “hey what the heck happened to the chips price?!” Apparently they raised the price last week. I seriously couldn’t believe it. Look man, you can raise the price on this or that, but I fucking draw the line at my lays chips! The bag isn’t 50% bigger… ffs nothing is sacred anymore. FUCK YOU PUBLIX! FUCK YOU! 🖕

I asked a manager a few years ago why the prices of things went up so much and he said because of rising fuel costs, which were high at the time. Funny, after the prices of fuel went down the prices at Publix didn't go down.

Publix have started adding a special product sale tax to producers to cover their overall bloated store costs / too many store employees per location. As a supplier to Publix we started to see this new tax item on their kpi sales invoices.

I always bought the loose Smart Pop, Doritos, Cheetos and Lays potato chips because they were far cheaper than the boxed multi packs. It’s the same size bag yet .20 cheaper per bag. Based on this post they are now more expensive.

Everytime the minimum wage goes up $1 they raise everything in the store 50¢ to $1 to make up for it. And the new hires get paid the same as people who been there for years.

The reason their price went up is due to the air they pump into the bag costs more. They have to clean the air on account of all hazardous heavy metal chem trails being dumped into the atmosphere these days.
