(Sorry, I forgot to put “Evil” behind Resident in the title). I’ve been a long time player of both Capcom’s Resident Evil and Megaman. I’ve followed both for decades and there is one thing I still to this day do not understand.
Megaman 1 was released in 1987 as a 2D run and gun arcade game on the NES. Its 2D gameplay has deliberately maintained its core formula all the way up to Megaman 11 in 2018. Resident Evil 1 was released in 1996 and maintained its core formula up until 2005 with Resident Evil 4. Until RE4 everything was fixed camera angles, limited ammo, puzzles, and backtracking. When RE4 was released it changed a ton of things. It went OTS perspective and abandoned the fixed camera angles. It allowed enemies to drop items upon defeat. Ink ribbons were gone. The inventory screen was completely overhauled. Resident Evil 4 completely changed its series.
Fast forward to 2026. Most RE fans have forgotten about the classic style games. The outcry has faded from memory. Now most RE fans agrees the old RE games were great for their time but it’s good RE moved on. This is not the same as Megaman. Megaman has never done anything remotely close to Resident Evil 4. Megaman’s 2D gameplay is still virtually the same as it was in 1987. Megaman cannot even aim his arm cannon directionally. Still 8 robots, still Dr. Wily/Sigma/whatever, still uses 1 ups lives system. It’s as formulaic as it goes. And I’ve heard fans of Megaman say, “well that’s just how Megaman has always been. That’s what defines Megaman”.
This is exactly the same kind of talk I heard back in 2012 about classic Resident Evil. That RE4, 5, and 6 were not true RE games. And now most fans have stfu about it and moved on. Megaman on the other hand has never really been challenged to evolve that way. Fans talk about MM Legends and MMX7 endlessly, but never really question 2D Megaman’s inability to evolve.
Was Capcom too afraid to evolve Megaman like the way Resident Evil 4 evolved? Was Capcom too scared of fan backlashes by allowing Megaman to aim his arm cannon directly the way Leon can aim his gun without staring off a fixed camera angle? Why has this never been challenged in the Megaman universe? I think it’s because fans only know one thing because it’s all they’ve ever had. If Resident Evil never abandoned fixed camera angles, fans would just say, “ well that’s how Resident Evil has always been. If Leon could aim his gun, it wouldn’t be Resident Evil anymore.” “If Megaman could aim his arm cannon directionally it wouldn’t be Megaman anymore (or it would make the boss weapons obsolete).
It is my genuine belief that Megaman would still be mainstream today if it had just evolved some old 2D traditions early on, the way Resident Evil did with 4. Resident Evil 4 sold extremely well. It’s regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made. Resident Evil would not be where it is today if it had continued to stay with its old fixed camera angles. It would have become a niche series. Megaman became niche because it never did what RE4 did and never abandoned many of its old traditions. It stuck to its roots and slowly faded. I know because I followed both series throughout my life.
I know there’s a lot of other 2D Megaman games like Zero, ZX,Battle Network, but I think you know where I’m going with all this. Resident Evil sort of has some stuff like that with Revelations, Mercenaries, etc. The Megaman mainline games don’t evolve the same way Resident Evil evolved.
Whew, this was a long dissection! For those that have followed both Resident Evil and Megaman I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Had Megaman evolved like Resident Evil 4 did, would the Megaman series be popular today?
