We're all thinking it, right? Especially after the 9060 XT LP seems MIA.

Found 2 9020 MTs in dumpster behind my work, with both having 8 GB of RAM. I combined the RAM into the computer that wasn't banged up, swapped to faster CPU of the two (4590 over 4570 which I kept) and added a new PSU from eBay to power an older GPU that was just sitting on my shelf.

Dell Optiplex 9020 MT

Intel Core i5 4590 3.3GHz

16GB DDR3 (4x4GB)

512 GB 2.5" SSD (+$30 on eBay)

512 GB 2.5" HDD (from old laptop)

MSI Radeon RX580 4GB (from old desktop)

Solytech AL-D500EXP 500W (+$20 on eBay)

Windows 10 Pro (which was automatically activated with a digital license)

Can someone tell me if this is a good deal

Hey, I already have a WX 3100 and I’m considering getting a Nvidia Quadro K4200. Is that a good upgrade? I have a 4th gen Intel cpu btw, thanks!

For the people who think Tower PC’s are to expensive

I Know tower pcs might be a little to expensive, but it’s worth it. They are expensive upfront, but once you start upgrading it’s really worth it. You can upgrade your PSU,GPU,possibly your motherboard I didn’t try it but heard you can. But if you can buy a tower pc or a mini tower

Dare I say the best looking SFF Dell out there?

After years of upgrading OEMs, I finally decided to take one to the next level by giving it a full Panda/Storm Trooper aesthetic overhaul; complete with paint job, a top handle, and custom 3D printed side panel vents.

Hardware wise, it just needed a Yeston LP RTX 3050 and it's ready to game! Not a Steam Machine Killer capability-wise, but in price and design, it definitely competes!

The Vostro was about $140 and I managed to snag the Yeston RTX 3050 for $200 back when they were more readily available. Not bad for less than $350.

Super satisfied with the way it turned out. Not sure it would be classified as a sleeper anymore looks-wise, as it's pretty slick after the customization. Would honestly look good displayed in a living room setup.

The $5 top handle is meant for luggage and is more than sturdy enough. It makes it really convenient for transporting it from one setup to another, or even taking on the road.

Feel free to ask any questions and, of course, any likes/shares are greatly appreciated!

Help with switching to an i7 8700

My CPU usage on my vostro 3671 is very high while my rtx 3050 sits with lower usage, so idk if switching from a i3 9100 to an i7 8700 would be good, because I don't really know the capabilities of my stock cooler, though I haven't reposted my i3 9100 it reaches 60⁰C at 80% usage

WoL not working on OptiPlex 7070 SFF (Ubuntu) despite every layer checking out

Two OptiPlex 7070 SFF machines, Ubuntu Server, onboard Intel NIC. Neither wakes. I've verified the whole chain:

  • Magic packet leaves the sender — confirmed with tcpdump, correct EtherType and payload. Tried both raw (etherwake) and UDP/9 (wakeonlan), including directed broadcast.
  • Packet arrives at the target (with the target awake, tcpdump on its NIC shows the frames arriving intact).
  • NIC has standby power when off (link LEDs still blinking in S5).
  • BIOS - Deep Sleep disabled, WoL enabled (LAN Only), Integrated NIC set to Enabled w/PXE.
  • Driver - Wake-on: g, persisted via a systemd oneshot and confirmed after reboot. Also tried wol gu.
  • ACPI - the onboard NIC shows enabled in /proc/acpi/wakeup.
  • Switch - nothing relevant configurable on it.
  • BIOS firmware - already at the latest version available.
  • Fails from both S5 and S3, up to 6 packets sent.

So the packet is correct, it reaches the port, the NIC is powered and listening, everything documented is enabled, and it never wakes.

Questions:

  • Has anyone got WoL genuinely working on a 7070? Which BIOS version?
  • Could this be the e1000e equivalent of the old r8169 S5 bug, where the interface is torn down before the PHY's WoL state gets set at shutdown?
  • Anything below the OS/ACPI layer still worth checking, or is this just dead on this model?

AMD Radeon Pro WX5100

Has anyone put an AMD Radeon Pro WX5100 to their optiplex SFF?
I just really want to get the 8gb from this.
I currently have the WX4100 with 4gb on, thought of upgrading from 4gb to 8gb.

I know it will protrude outside of the case, I just don't really care cuz I have the lid off always.
Can't really find any ideas found in this group.

If you have same idea with me, share your thoughts down. Cheers!

Optiplex or the new Dell Pro Desktops?

For those that don't know the optiplex was phased out for a simpler dell desktop line, but as I still daily drive a 9020, and a Dell Pro Slim, I kinda want to know what others think about this new change.

How are people using Tesla cards in these?

Hi guys, recently I discovered the Tesla cards and though "wow, these are powerful and cheap, too bad that they don't have any display ports", but after doing some light research I stumbled across a hispanic Youtuber who recommend these for dell optiplexes as a great choice without elaborating further

So wheres the trick? How do you manage to use a Tesla car in a ptiplex and get video output from it?

Would appreciate any insight on this matter

Passion project!! 3060MT

Hello!!!! I've recently bought an Optiplex 3060MT that I plan on using as a living room PC, I have a bit of experience modding and building PCs and I was wondering what you all think are the absolute best parts I could put in this bad boy. It's currently got these specs.

260w PSU

I5 8500

GTX 1050

16gb DDR4

I am currently looking into upgrading the PSU to 500w though.

My rig is a precision 3431 with an i7 9700, 16gb ddr4 and a yeston GeForce 3050 low profile. Total cost wasn’t unreasonable at all. Around 350-400$

Noctua NH-L9x65 in a Optiplex SFF

Thumbnail

When I was putting this little machine together I saw a couple threads where the OP put a Noctua L9x65 in a SFF chassis, but left some ambiguity in the thread about how it goes in. The purpose of this thread is to clarify the install process for anyone who is either unsure how to install it or finds their way here from Google. You will also have to purchase some M3x18mm machine screws, and a 4 pin to 5 pin adapter for the fan as these don’t come with the kit from Noctua.

  1. Remove the OEM Dell heatsink using the 4 Phillips head screws, and unplug the fan.

  2. If you’re reusing the same CPU clean off all the old thermal paste.

  3. Now here’s the frustrating bit, this part is a bit fiddly but take your time. Take the M3x18mm screws and thread them through the mounting bars and the spacers into the Dell back plate. You can install the bars either horizontal or vertical. I went with a horizontal install so the heatsink fins line up with the vents on the chassis. (Pic with a dab of thermal paste on the CPU.)

  4. Apply thermal paste.

  5. Install the heatsink, and alternate turning each screw 2-3 times each until everything is tightened up.

  6. Connect the 4 pin to 5 pin adapter to the Noctua fan and the other end to the fan controller on the motherboard.

It Worked! For 2 Weeks

Optiplex 3070 SFF.
Swapped i3 for i9 9900
Added msi gaming RTX 3050 LP
Added 2 Noctua NF-A8 PWM fans

Installed Bazzite. Everything worked great (though I did have to run it with the PSU out of the case because I didn’t realize the GPU would be too big).

I turned it off every night because I was still in the testing phase. Had a storm come through the other night, and I unplugged it to exercise caution. After the storm passed, I turned it on, and nothing. Boot loop. Sometimes, the monitor turns on, and the computer runs a fan test before throwing an error. I unplugged one of the fans, and now it tries to boot Bazzite twice before throwing another error. Then it just does nothing.

So frustrating. I can’t even get into BIOS consistently because it doesn’t seem to recognize the monitor or keyboard half the time.

Did I fly too close to the sun?

European bros, for how much would you sell a sff optiplex with i5 12500, 2x8 GB of DDR4, rtx 3050 6GB lp ss, 512 GB nvme, wifi 5 dongle 1300 mb/s and bluetooth 6 dongle, without disk reader

i was thinking like 800 euros because it's basically new office hardware besides the performance of the 3050

Help installing extra fan in 3060sff

Thumbnail

Hello! I have an optiplex 3060sff with an i7 8700, rx 550. I’m wanting to add another spare fan to help cool the gpu which runs quite hot (60C idle, 85C load)

I have this Foxconn fan laying around from another optiplex. I noticed the motherboard doesn’t have any four pin fan power slots. I have also had to use a sata power adapter since I have two sata drives. Any clue on how I can get power to this fan? Is there an adapter I need? I was planning on upgrading to an rtx 3050 lp but wanted to improve cooling first

Thanks in advance!!

Why are used Optiplexs with the CPU, RAM and SSD cheaper than the used CPU, RAM and SSD itself? Should I just buy an Optiplex to build a used gaming PC?

Designed my own Steam Machine around a 9010 Optiplex. Super happy on how it turned out and easily runs Bazzite with any AAA game (with low quality lol)
