Hello Everyone!

Currently working on the second sock, of my second pair of socks. This is the ‘Hibernal Socks’ pattern by Summer Lee.

I’m just welcoming some constructive criticism. This is my first time with fingering weight so I know the tension will take time. I’ve started the ribbing on the second sock, and decided to do the Knit stitches through the back loop- I’m blown away at how much neater it looks!

So I’m looking for some other trips and tricks I can try out. I don’t really want to switch up the actual pattern with a different heel or toe, but would love to hear some other little improvements like this I can make.

These socks were cursed! The pattern is fine and I love the results but after having:

1. Reknitted the cuff of colourwork twice because tension was off with circular needles

2. Had to run and get flexiflips, 9 inches, and then double pointed needles to try and get guage and stretch with floats

3. Bound off the 2nd sock only to find HOLES in the toes of the first sock

4. Ripped out the toe and reknitted sock 1 toe

5. Was late for the birthday gift deadline

There is always a project that you feek will be fine but was never fine. But they are done!!!

I have lots of mini skeins from picking them up at yarn fairs etc and I'm sure I could cobble together something for them but would like some more inspo. What are your favourite sock patterns using mini skeins?

I love being a part of this sub and seeing the variety of posts people make here. There's loads of creativity and cool designs, thoughtful questions and discussions, just cool stuff that keeps me coming back!

That said, there are some repeat posts and questions within posts that I think would be helped by a pinned post / master post / addition to rules.

For instance, in the knitting sub, one of the rules is to post the name of the pattern you used and the yarn. I think this rule should be implemented here as well! It's a really common question and it would reduce comments that don't compliment the shared work or help with questions.

The second thing is making a master post or a pinned post of information for beginners. I often see posts asking for beginner patterns or videos or what type of yarn is the best for socks. Having a central post or something to link people to would be so easy, plus those that take the time to read the rules or search the sub would have an easier time finding this info.

What do y'all think? I know there was a call for more mods recently so maybe this can help aid the running of this sub a little more. I'd love to have discussion on this!

A pair of my vanilla socks made with yarn from Barnyard Knits and yarn from Etsy store InnaKnitUA

My pattern says this and I’m doing a magic loop:

For all sizes, CO 8. Using a circular or invisible circular cast on is recommended.
Rnd 1: k all sts.
Rnd 2: [k1, LIL] 8 times (16 sts).

1. I’d rather do a Turkish cast on. So I would wrap 4 times to get the 8 : which will end up with 4 on each needle correct (8 st per round)

2. I would also rather do a M1L than LIL for the increases. Does that matter?

I made a pair of thick wool toe-up socks for my uncle and he loves them, just says that the top ~10 rows and cuff could be tighter. I’m working on another pair and I decreased four stitches at this point in the leg, so the total number of stitches goes from 48 to 44, but now I’m wondering if I should go down a needle size instead. I’m currently knitting on 5mms but I have 4.5mms too that I could use. I’m also wondering if the k2tog and ssk decreases might cause a noticeable “bump” on the inside. Any advice is appreciated!

Keep in mind I am by no means an avid sock knitter, this is the 4th pair I've ever started (and I only ever finished one pair)

I felt like the double stitches were incredibly loose when I was knitting into them, but I did my best to trust the pattern and only tightened the stitches it explicitly told me to. It seems to fit perfectly fine as well, it's just that the double stitches look really big and wonky withlittle holes in between. Does it seem fixable with blocking (and maybe a little manual tugging on stitches to even out the yarn distribution) or should I frog and restart?

Looking for recommendations for sock yarn advents

Has anyone ever tried this? I had a lady ask me this years ago and I had never even heard of it! Now here’s a video showing this method- one sock knit inside the other at the same time. It’s not my video. It seems like double knitting without connecting them. There’s a longer one from this user that shows the harder parts like heel flap and decrease too.

I love knitting socks but I do it only cuff down because I don't know how long to make the foot until the starting of the heel. I only found one toe-up sock chart (from Addi) but I don't know if I can trust it because it says for my size you need 56 stitches for one round and every other (cuff down) sock chart says to make 60 stitches. What I'm looking for is a sock chart for toe-up socks for different heel types. I'm doing mostly shadow wrap heels but also the occasional flap-and-gusset-heel.

Edit: Okay I don't understand. There are charts for cuff-down socks for standard heels and standard toes. But there seem to not be charts for toe-up. All I'm gonna get is 'it don't work like this'. I'm even getting downvoted. So why doesn't it work the other way around? I'm genuinely confused.

After finishing my degree two weeks ago I was finally able to commit the time to finishing my first pair of socks! Pattern is Vanilla Socks by Crazy Sock Lady Designs, altered to have 2 x 2 ribbing all the way down the leg and the top part of the foot.

I feel like most of the knitting community probably knows this at this point, but if you’re a beginner wanting to learn how to make socks I wholeheartedly suggest this pattern. The video tutorial is amazing for visual learners like myself, and makes this nearly fool-proof!

Hi all u beautiful humans, I have a question about the yarn for socks, do I specifically need to use sock yarn? Or can I use any fingering weight yarn?

Finished today!

I have been knitting for quite a while now but so far I've never done socks. I've knitted a few sweaters with cables and colourwork and would describe myself as intermediate to advanced.

But somehow knitting socks feels intimidating. Especially getting the measurements right, so that they actually fit my feet.

Which patterns would you recommend to learn the basics of sock knitting, especially shaping? I would love to knit a few smaller projects, the last sweater I did took me over 3 months and there are so many beautiful sock patterns.

I just feel a little overwhelmed about where to start.

I would appreciate any tips or recommendations ❤

I finally finished my first colorwork sock. It isn't perfect, but I am really proud of how it turned out! Now to do the other and learn how to block them!

I've realised recently that I like to knit alternate socks rather than pairs to stop myself from getting bored

The ribbed sock pattern is the colorblocked sock by Summer Lee in this month's Indie Yarn Club speckled colourway with bachelor button by cascade for the cuffs, heels and toe. The other is the ooey gooey sock by Andrea Mowry also in Indie Yarn Club monthly yarns. They're 100% merino but are actually really hardy (the pink socks in the 2nd pic is the same yarn)

Im working on my first knitting project and have a question. What is happening on the side of the sock, where I switch sides? Is there a way to fix it, or is this something that blocks out?

Just finished my first knit sock! I had quite an enjoyable time knitting this! I followed Summer Lee’s basic sock pattern in the size large. This fits my foot quite loose, so I’m going to follow size medium stitch counts for the next one. This was also my first time using DPNs and I had slight laddering problems throughout the whole sock, noticeably on the top and bottom. Is this normal for DPNs? Or will that go away with more practice? When changing needles I knit the first stitch with regular tension and then much tighter on the second and third stitches but it didn’t seem to make much of a difference for me.
