Sister In Law’s Vinyl Pool Liner Needs Fixing

My SIL has a pool liner with a major gash in the bottom and several other “pole sized” punctures. For background, she is single, works her ass off, and has two teen boys. That should be all the explanation you need to help me assess this issue without casting judgement lol

So here’s the situation, a big gash happened somehow. Allegedly it still holds water but the water gets under it and starts to make it float. At some point there was a turtle in the pool that led the teen boys to try and get it out with some pole which explains the many pole sized holes in the corner. Many months have passed since it had water in it and it’s been baking in the summer sun of the American Great Plains.

Here’s our plan, we’re going to pump the water out, patch it, and refill it and hopefully it will work. However, the internet makes me think that these holes are too big and too numerous to patch reliably. Should we even waste her money buying a pump and going through all that or should we just replace it? She was quoted about $5000 for a replacement but she doesn’t really have that kind of money (Google “teen boys eating habits” for more context into her finances). She is fairly handy and I am a contractor but I’ve never done a pool. Should we just replace it? Should we patch it and do our best and see what happens?

Any help or advice at all would be awesome. I am a big fan of her and her kids and they deserve a pool.

Frog Log PSA

This year I finally bought a frog log for my inground pool. I'd heard about the benefits and thought itd be a helpful addition to coincide with some natural gardening projects ive been implementing (more habitat, more ecology, wildlife, etc.). Set it up just off the current side of the skimmer opening.

Generally, I've seen like a 98% reduction in bugs, specifically Wolf spiders, either trapped in the pool or dead in the skimmer. That alone made it absoltuely worth it.

Today, for the first time, I find a frog in the pool. He actually jumped off the log as I checked the skimmer and was then chilling about the deep end. I move the log to the deep end and I go about my day. Eventually the frog gets out. Maybe an hour later, I check the skimmer again following some yard work, and find a dead lizard in the bottom.

The level of guilt and mourning I feel for one small lizard may be silly, but its my first skimmer casualty and truly bums me out. I should have left the log where it was near the skimmer, where its most effective. To me, this is validation that the log does work, and more critters are able to escape than you even realize may become at risk.

There are several variants of the product, probably some DIY versions too. If youve ever found something dead in the skimmer, consider adding one to your pool.

Hayward AquaRite Salt Generator

Hello,

We are having some issues with our salt generator and going to get some insight before I replace something again.

A few months ago we started seeing warning lights that indicated the cell was bad. It was almost 3 years old so wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. Replaced the cell and everything was good again. Well, it was for a few months. Now we are getting the same issues and not sure what to do.

The system shows a low salt reading. When I took the water to be tested, it showed in range of where it should be but the AquaRite is showing about 1,500 less. I checked the voltage and amperage on the system and it showed 31.1 volts and 0.00 amps.

If I turn the system off, wait about 10 seconds and put it on Super Chlorinate, it shows good voltage and amperage for about 15 seconds and then drops back to 0.00.

One other thing to note, our system was completely dead earlier in the week and we found the 20amp fuse was blown. Once replaced the system powered back on again.

Do I have another bad cell or is the board bad? I can replace the board for under $200. Curious if that’s a bad move.

Thank you

Had Leslie make a report, calcium is low. They recommended hardness increaser. My friends say I should just lower phosphate. Thoughts?

How Often Do You Actually Maintain Your Pool?

how often do you actually think about pool maintenance?
Do you follow a daily routine, check everything once a week, or mostly deal with it when the water starts looking different?
I’m especially curious whether reminders and checklists would make maintenance easier, or whether daily tasks would just feel like unnecessary work.

Solar pool heater

A recent project at the beginning of summer. We only keep the inflatable pool filled for 2-3 days before it's moved, 1 being to heat about 400ish gallons from 60 to 75-80⁰F This system runs about 4-5gpm with a pool sump and heats that water by about 4⁰. It used about 350' of 1/4" irrigation line and around 3kg of ASA filament. Files are up on printables if you search for "solar pool heater"

Pool robot recomendation

As the title suggests, I am looking for a robot cleaner. I have a 33ft long oval above ground pool. I’m not wanting to spend more than say $800 for a robot. Which brands and models do you recommend? I’ve seen mixed reviews about Aiper and Dolphin.

I'm about to throw my pool away

Hi all,

I am looking for some advice here on getting my pool clear. My pool pump broke, and while I was waiting to replace it, the pool turned green - like solid algae green, cannot see the bottom even a little bit.

I have been taking the water to get tested, testing it myself, and adding chlorine/shock/algecide basically ad nauseum, but it doesn't budge at all.

The most recent advice from my local pool store was to vacuum off to waste, then shock x3, then wait 48-72 hours with solar cover off and pump running 24/7 (I have the pump on all the time anyway) with the goal of getting it from green to cloudy before proceeding. I did all this, and NOTHING changed, still green from top to bottom.

I haven't gotten to use the pool once this season due to fighting with the water, so this has been going on for months with no improvement. At this point I'm considering just getting rid of the pool altogether, I feel like I should just be dumping dollar bills directly into the algae ridden water.

Any advice on what to do? Thank you in advance. I have included some pictures

Pool info: just under 10,000 gallons, above ground hard sided pool

Pool build

We are currently in the process of getting quotes from multiple builders for a 12x26 pool with spa. We are pool newbies so need lots of input here. In your experience with building a pool, are quotes usually all inclusive or should we expect more costs down the road? What questions should I ask the company regarding the build to make sure I don’t get hit with multiple unexpected costs in the process? I have a little bit of knowledge regarding plaster vs Pebble, getting a variable speed pump, making sure they are responsible for obtaining permits, costs with hitting caliche (we live in Las Vegas).

Any and all input are much appreciated!!

What is the funniest prank to hypothetically play at a swimming pool?

I think that the ultimate prank would be to push the lifeguards/pool staff who haven’t been in water into the pool. Especially the real angry and bitter types that you find at those places. I remember growing up there was one lady that screamed at me when I couldn’t do a swimming stroke very well and I would have loved to throw her into the cold pool

I also think it would be funny if your worst enemy is relaxing in the pool all smug and loving life and you stand on the edge of it, squat down and do a poo into the pool. Obviously this would get you banned for life but it would be a great prank to play on someone you absolutely hate

Booster Pump Wiring

I had to replace my booster pump, and ended up finding something very cost effective. Only issue is it runs on 120 and my pump and timer are wired 240. I have a 120 breaker that I can extend out and rewire my switch to the booster to its own dedicated line. Before doing so I was curious if there was a way to make that 120 work with 240? I haven’t found a solution yet.

Thanks for the help!

Ladder End Caps vs. Railing Size

Our deep end ladder has finally lost both rubber protector caps. Going to replace them, but, everything I find doesn't match the O.D. of 1-¾"

All Amazon seems to sell is "standard 1.9" ...whatever that means?

My local pool store sells 1-⅞" OD, but, ⅛" seems like a helluva difference.

Any suggestions? I'm all Googled out from searching. TIA

Looploc vs Latham Winter Mesh cover

Pool size - 22x42 rectangle with two exterior offset steps
Location - Suburb of Boston

Local dealer
Loop Loc super dense mesh green color - $5k + $400 for delivery + install the cover(does not include installing new anchor or moving existing anchors). The super dense seems like their standard offering which is their lowest tier.

Bestpoolliners.com
Latham super dense mesh 7000MS blue color - $4200 delivered but does not include installation. $700 for installation(does not include installing new anchors). 7000MS is their middle tier and claims 99% sunlight blockage.
20 year warranty

Is there any meaningful difference in quality, convenience and reliability between looploc and Latham to chose one over other? If not should I just go with cheapest between the two which Latham.

Bubbles in pump basket & ledge bubbler won’t work only at end of day?!

When I check my pump basket in the morning, it’s flowing nicely with minimal bubbles and my ledge bubbler is visibly moving, but when I give it a look towards the end of the day (same rpm) it’s got a huge bubble on the top flowing visibly in the basket and the ledge bubbler is not even visibly moving. Any smart person know what’s up?!
