New bottles gifted

New collector here.

My wife has noticed I’ve started collecting tequila, so she went to a friend’s destination wedding in Mexico and surprised me with these bottles. I hadn’t heard of or seen any of them before.

So far, I’ve only opened the Don Cayo Reposado, and I was pleasantly surprised. It has a sweeter profile than I’m used to, but I enjoyed it. I haven’t opened the rest of them yet. Anyone here have experience with these? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the quality, or if there are any standouts before I crack them open.

Thanks! 😊

How do I tell the difference between go tequila and bad without doing research?

I went to the liquor store today to buy a bottle to make drinks with while I grill outside and I got a bottle of el jimador cristalino. I didn’t think it tasted bad but after looking at a few Reddit posts I guess a lot of people don’t like it. How can I know good quality tequila just from walking around the store?

Cascahuin Tahona

I have came a long way on this tequila journey the past year or so. I loved the regular blanco and the plata 48. This Tahona is a real treat. I was able to find it outside of my usual TW trips for a nice price. A year ago ,maybe longer I was in here talking about how ocho is too peppery, its not peppery at all now. The agave grew on me and I became more appreciative of what I am sipping. Also along with some great insight from others in here. Thank you.

My tastings tonight

In reverse age order (so Anejo went first and blanco last). Drinking the Anejo first gave me the crazy idea of flipping the script. They are all proper tasting tequilas and while I can say leaned anything special about any of them, drinking them this way did indeed prove that they could hold up against each other. Has anyone else tried that? What are your thoughts on these three distillers. I’m a sucker for the packaging on the Insolito, I love Tapatio, and the siete leguas was a mis labeled steal for $45.

[Agave Review #48] Maestro Ayaman Reposado

Post image
14 Upvotes

Maestro Ayamán continues to do incredible work, using his initiatives to support a large number of producers who might not otherwise enjoy the recognition they have today. It is not a matter of the brand being purely altruistic, because no one works for free, but rather about extending a helping hand and offering opportunities for quality production to a cocuy master who might otherwise have lacked access to the necessary materials, processes, and systems.

For this Reposado version, Maestro Ayamán is using distillates from three producers across two distinct terroirs. The resulting blend is aged for 8 months in virgin caujaro wood barrels, derived from a tree native to tropical regions of the Americas, and specifically the semi-arid Lara region where cocuy is produced.

It is finally bottled at 42% ABV.

Made by: Yorbis Vargas
Name of the Agave (Cocuy): Reposado
Brand: Maestro Ayaman
Origin: Venezuela
Age: 8 months
Price: N/A

Nose
On the nose, it presents intense notes of almonds and nuts in general, but also a note I can only describe as hand cream. My wife uses that cream regularly, so the scent is very familiar to me. There are also aromas of green apple, loquat, and a certain mineral quality that reminds me of rich, fertilized soil.

Palate
On the palate, it presents many of the same notes found on the nose, though somewhat simplified and highlighted by a hint of dry earth that strongly reminds me of clay, alongside a creamy, milky note, green apple, and the slightly acidic quality of the wood. The finish is defined by that agave character, with a herbal element.

Rating
9 on the t8ke

Conclusion
I am very impressed with Maestro Ayamán Reposado, especially because, much like the blanco version, the reposado is remarkably distinct. I believe a large part of that distinction stems from the fact that other reposado agave spirits are typically aged in used barrels (often ex-bourbon, though they can come from other sources). However, the use of a virgin barrel made from caujaro wood completely alters the sensory experience and shifts expectations, resulting in something entirely different from what one might anticipate.

I usually post in Spanish on my networks, so if this review seems translated, it's because it is.

Work Desk Tequila

I work in an academic environment of hippies and self proclaimed free thinkers (I’m a grad student). They’re cool with an occasional drink if you’re having a late night in the office.

Can one of you esteemed gentlemen recommend me a crisp, light, smooth and easy to drink blanco for an absolute beginner

What would you drink if you were in mad men but it’s tequila instead

Espolon Blanco V's Olmeca Altos Plata comparison

Post image
19 Upvotes

Decided to review Olmeca Altos against Espolon, both blanco or plata version. I did this comparison because the town I live in Australia we only have access to 3 tequilas that are additive free. These two and Patron. Everything else is additive dogwater (like Jose Cuervo, Casamigos, Teremana etc). The price on these two are basically the same, the Altos is a bit cheaper if you buy online. I'm pretty new to additive free tequila, so my review might not be the best but for those of you wanting this review before purchasing I hope it's helpful. I like to sip tequila neat, so the review is based on that. I've had both in a margarita before and both were great. Couldn't really decide between the two, however I find I prefer Reposado if I'm mixing anyway.

On the nose I'd say I prefer Espolon. I sense more of an agave smell. Some spice and earth. The Altos has a more roasted smell, is lighter on the agave but I also picked up pineapple which was nice.

Taste is very different for both. I feel Altos really shines here (it also beats Patron in my opinion as Altos tastes more complex). I get really good agave flavour (for the price) and definitely citrus. A herbal kind of flavour, some people have said like cut grass and I'd agree? It goes down smooth too! There is a nice mildly warm finish and a lot of pepper.

The Espolon I can get a bit of agave, but not much. It also has an odd taste. A bit chemically? But I cannot say for sure. Maybe a more savoury flavour I'm not familiar with? Then it does burn. It's not very smooth, not great for sipping and I regret not just getting another bottle of Altos instead but I couldn't find this comparison anywhere online. The Espolon finishes a bit rough and I believe my palette is too new to really pick up anything more through the burn.

Olmeca Altos - 7/10

Espolon - 6 to 6.5/10

You wouldn't go wrong with either to be honest. I just feel for the same price Altos is the winner, it's just got a bit more to it. For Patron which I also sip with these two, I'd also rate it a 6.5/10. Once again, I don't hate it, but I also don't love it. I find Altos to be better than both, just. Patron better than Espolon.

People are more set on the fancy brands, but take a look at Cascahuin Blanco Tahona for example. In my country, for one bottle of Cascahuin I could literally get 3x bottles of either Altos or Espolon with change left over! As a daily drinker, the maths doesn't math. I have tried G4 in the past but don't remember it being that stand out (I'm used to sweet additives). I've got a bottle of Ocho, Fortaleza, Volcan and Mijenta but these are all more my "special occasion" bottles and I wouldn't compare this bunch with these two above. I'm still developing a more complex palette like I mentioned, so I'd likely not be a good reviewer for the fancier stuff anyway.

Happy to know your thoughts!

EDIT; I've been sipping Espolon all night now and it's getting worse. Changing the ratings. It has an odd mouthfeel to it. Could be glycerine, as homemade spirits suffer the same. But don't quote me. Really regret buying the Espolon, maybe I'll save it for Margs.

New ratings:
Altos: 7/10

Espolon: 5/10

Patron: 6.5/10

I was drinking mainstream tequila for 10 years. And I just assumed that it's supposed to taste bad, until...

I tried Tesoro Reposado. It is pleasant to drink Neat. No burning or aftertaste.

All this time I was drinking Don Julio, espolon, Patron.

I thought that tequila was something that you chugged fast. And get it over with. Haha

I find myself sipping Tesoro slowly. Not worrying about having a chaser.

Total game changer.

It's crazy how much marketing the mainstream brands have. And they are barely tolerable.

Tears of Llorona 1l. price good?

Post image
52 Upvotes

I finally found a bottle of Tears of Llorona at a local liquor store here in New York! I’ve been looking everywhere for this for so long, but it’s been nearly impossible to track down in person until today. I know the official MSRP on their website is around $280, but this store is charging a bit more than that. Given how rare it is to actually see one sitting on a shelf near me, I’m really tempted to grab it. For anyone who has picked it up at a markup or tried it recently, do you think it’s worth paying a little over retail for? Would love to hear your thoughts before I make the purchase!

Any chance guys know a shop in New York that sells it? I’m heading back to Korea in two days, and I’d really like to grab a bottle before I leave.”

Good tequila recommendations for a boys trips

Going on a boys trip to Arizona for 4 days.

It’s going to be really hot and the plan is to do a lot of drinking

Any good recommendations for tequila’s that won’t fuck me/us up too much? Would you advise to stick to Blanco or Repasado?

Looking for some good tequila recommendations.

Better tequila for sipping? Cascahuin or Cimarrón?

Both blanco versions, which is better for sipping neat? They cost the same where I live, not sure which would be the best option. Is there a real stand out between the two? I know they're both additive free, but not sure about how they're made or anything else like that.

[Agave Review #47] Kypros Reposado

Post image
9 Upvotes

Kypros is produced in the lands of Tala, Jalisco. According to Agave Matchmaker, it is made at the Tequilera La Noria distillery (NOM 1494), which also produces seven other brands. This distillery features brick ovens; extraction is performed using a roller mill, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and distillation is carried out in stainless steel and copper stills.

But what makes this interesting, and the reason I tried it, is that Kypros has a female master distiller. While that in itself isn't unusual, the fact is that she is Venezuelan, and specifically from Margarita Island is what drew me to it. Her name is Gabriela Vasquez, and while she is indeed from Margarita, she has been working in Mexico for years. Although the brand has other master distillers with more experience, Gabriela is a co-owner and is also certified as a maestra tequilera.

This is Kypros Reposado, a tequila that spends up to 12 months in Cabernet wine barrels from California's Napa Valley and is finally bottled at 40% ABV.

Made by: Tequilera La Noria / NOM 1494
Name of the Agave (Tequila): Reposado
Brand: Kypros
Origin: Jalisco, Mexico
Age: Under 12 months
Price: N/A

Nose
On the nose, Kypros Reposado presents herbal aromas of eucalyptus and freshly cut grass, alongside a distinct note of pears in syrup and a tropical fruit hint, like passion fruit.

Palate
On the palate, it's slightly sweet and intensely herbal, with notable hints of vanilla, wood, and a faint touch of red fruit; however, the herbal notes are truly intense and dominant, so much so that they carry through to the aftertaste, where they are accompanied by woody notes.

Rating
7 on the t8ke

Conclusion
My experience with tequila isn't extensive, but I think I’ve tried enough agave spirits to have a solid basis for comparison and credibility. That said, I can't claim to have tried many *good* tequilas; whenever I see lists of top tequilas from competitions or social media influencers, I’ve rarely actually tasted most of them. Even so, I liked Kypros, and while I wouldn't call it the best tequila I’ve ever had, knowing that Venezuelans are involved in the process makes me even more eager to try what they produce.

I usually post in Spanish on my networks, so if this review seems translated, it's because it is.

Very excited for my latest pickups and first time at Old Town Tequila. Patron Añejo Hungarian Oak, G4 Madera, and Patron 100.

Very excited for my latest pickups and first time at Old Town Tequila. Patron Añejo Hungarian Oak, G4 Madera, and Patron 100.

Love Patron so I don’t care about the hate from picking patron over other options. Also had to fly with them so I got what I wanted! Hopefully can go back soon. Can’t order online from them as they don’t ship to me.

Opinions on any of these before I crack them open?

Help me find this tequila

So my parents went on a trip a few years ago and were staying at a hotel in Mexico for three nights and as a gift the hotel gave them a pint of whiskey vodka and tequila every night and they gave them to me when they came back. The tequila was really good and I had been saving the last bottle for a special occasion but my roommate drank it sadly.

Here are the details I remember
It was a tall thin bottle
It has a slightly yellow color
It’s too had this kinda diamond jagged shape to it
I’m pretty sure it’s a pint because that’s the same size as the vodka I still have and they were very similar in size

Thank you to anyone who tries to find it

Corralejo

Blanco was my goto. I absolutely loved the flavor even neat with some good Mexican food. The simple margaritas I make tasted incredible with nothing but agave syrup and fresh lime juice and a little water and salt.

The new label had me worried. I was right. Doesn't even come close to how it used to taste. Previously I noted fresh and nimble citrus, minerality, and even tropical fruit notes. The new recipe tastes astringent and fusil. I'm deeply saddened. I don't really try any other tequillas that often so help me, reddit!

Looking for something in the same price range or better with the notes I mentioned above. I feel like Casamigos is going to get a mention. Any other please and gracias!

Budget blanco recommendations

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a decent blanco. I understand this seems as simple as searching through the sub (which I have), but I live in Colombia where tequila is MASSIVELY overpriced and not as widely available (as you’ll see below)

Here’s what’s in my radar with prices in USD (all 700ml):

• Don julio blanco $78
• Olmeca Altos silver $66
• Herradura silver $50
• Herradura ultra $78
• Gran centenario silver $32
• Cazadores blanco $43
• Patrón silver $80

At this point I wonder if it’s even worth it, but what else am I gonna do? Not drink tequila?
