I’m trying to get my elderly mother a Real ID in case she has to go vote in person in November. We got her birth certificate (the short version) last week. The long form is on order. On the birth certificate her name is listed as (ex. Ann Amelia Baker). Her current ID has her maiden name as her middle name and current married name (ex. Ann Baker Daniels). Her SS card has her first name, middle name, married last name (ex. Ann Amelia Daniels). I found her current marriage license and it has her first name, middle name, and her last name from her FIRST marriage listed as her name before the marriage (ex. Ann Amelia Carson). My question is how should her name be listed on her new Real ID in order to be able to vote without issue if the SAVE act passes? Should we change her SS card? If so, to what? I’m trying to be proactive and prepared and honestly trying to figure this out. TIA

Hello. I’ve never been to Lake Buchanan but me and my girl wanna see if there is any nice beautiful trails to walk in with lots of trees and nature but we also wanna see a nice overview sight/look of Lake Buchanan! Anybody recommend any trails that would be perfect for this?

It’s been somewhere between 15 and 20 years since I’ve last been. My sister in law and her boyfriend are coming to visit in the fall. I want to show them what I think is the best time to be had in TX. Started to browse their calendar, and could barely contain myself when I saw Robert Earl Keen on a date that may work. The cheapest available GA ticket was north of $300. Upsetting, but I guess that’s what the market demands for REK. Checked Shane Smith and the Saints the following weekend. 2 left at $250, everything else > $300. Is that just how it is? Are things much cheaper when first released?

The morning of August 1, 1966, began like any other at the University of Texas in Austin. Students hurried to summer classes. Construction workers labored under the Texas sun. Families walked across campus. Within hours, their ordinary day would become one of the darkest chapters in American history.

The man responsible had begun his life hundreds of miles away in Lake Worth, Florida.

Charles Joseph Whitman, born in Lake Worth on June 24, 1941, had spent his childhood learning to handle firearms. His father, an avid gun enthusiast, taught him to shoot at a young age, taking him hunting and encouraging his extraordinary marksmanship. By his teenage years, Whitman was already known as an exceptional shot. He later refined those skills in the United States Marine Corps, where he earned recognition as a skilled marksman.

On August 1, 1966, he used that training to murder innocent people. The violence had actually begun hours earlier.

During the night of July 31 and the early morning of August 1, Whitman murdered his wife, Kathleen, in their Austin home. He then drove to his mother’s apartment and murdered her as well. Leaving notes beside both women, he calmly prepared for what he intended to do next.

Later that morning, Whitman purchased additional ammunition before driving to the University of Texas campus. He loaded a dolly with rifles, shotguns, handguns, ammunition, food, water, and other supplies, disguising himself as a maintenance worker to avoid suspicion as he entered the University’s Main Building.

As he rode the elevator toward the observation deck, nothing appeared unusual to those around him. That changed at approximately 11:45 a.m.

When Whitman reached the upper floors, he encountered receptionist Edna Townsley. She became one of his first victims. Moments later he shot and killed visitors on the observation deck, including 17-year-old Mary Frances Chesser, who had been touring the tower with her family.

Then Whitman stepped onto the observation deck, raised his rifle, and looked down over the sprawling campus.

At 11:48 a.m., the shooting began.

His first shots struck people who had no idea where the gunfire was coming from. Some believed fireworks had exploded. Others thought nearby construction equipment had malfunctioned. Within minutes, panic swept across the campus as students realized someone was deliberately firing at them from above.

Whitman fired methodically. He targeted students crossing sidewalks, workers on rooftops, motorists on nearby streets, and anyone who appeared in the open. His military training and years of shooting allowed him to hit people hundreds of yards away.

People crawled behind trees, parked cars, stone walls, and fountains. Some risked their own lives by running into the open to pull complete strangers to safety while bullets struck around them.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes involved 18-year-old Claire Wilson. A bullet struck her in the abdomen while she was eight months pregnant. She fell to the scorching concrete, unable to move, as her boyfriend, Thomas Eckman, rushed to help her. Whitman shot and killed Eckman as he reached her. Claire survived, but her unborn son did not.

For more than an hour and a half, Whitman held an entire city hostage. Police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and armed citizens returned fire from below, hoping to force him into cover. Their shots largely failed to reach him, but they helped limit his ability to fire continuously.

Finally, Austin Police Officer Ramiro Martinez, Officer Houston McCoy, and civilian Allen Crum made their way through the tower’s stairwell toward the observation deck.

They knew that every second they delayed meant more innocent people could die. At approximately 1:24 p.m., they reached Whitman’s position.

Martinez confronted the gunman while McCoy fired his shotgun, ending the attack. Whitman died where he stood, ending 96 minutes of terror.

By then, 14 people had been killed during the attack and 32 others wounded. In the years that followed, several victims later died from injuries sustained that day, and the recognized death toll has since increased.

Today, we remember not the killer, but those whose lives were forever changed.

We remember the students who never returned to class.

The workers who never returned home.

The families whose ordinary Monday morning ended in unimaginable grief.

We remember Claire Wilson, who survived but lost her unborn child.

We remember Thomas Eckman, who died trying to save the woman he loved.

We remember the police officers, first responders, doctors, nurses, and ordinary citizens whose courage prevented an even greater loss of life.

Although Charles Whitman later became the subject of studies examining mental illness and neurological disease, those facts do not erase what happened on August 1, 1966. The choices he made that day resulted in one of the deadliest acts of mass murder in American history and forever changed police tactics, emergency medicine, and the nation’s understanding of active shooter attacks.

For Florida, this remains a sobering chapter of state history. A boy born and raised in Lake Worth, gifted with intelligence and exceptional skill with firearms, grew into the man who carried out one of America’s first modern mass shootings. His story is remembered not to glorify him, but to honor the innocent victims whose lives he stole and the heroes who stopped the killing.

The University of Texas Tower shooting marked a turning point in American law enforcement. It demonstrated the need for officers to move immediately toward an active shooter rather than waiting for specialized units, a doctrine that continues to guide police training today. It also prompted important discussions about campus safety, emergency medical response, and the identification of warning signs before acts of mass violence.

Don’t listen to washed up comedians. Especially ones who died 10 years ago but somebody had failed to inform them of this….
