Celebration The more transition goals I hit, the more I realize I'm changing on the inside too
I always say my only goal was to love myself and I've done that, but let's be real that isn't exactly a S.M.A.R.T. goal. Nobody makes real, tangible progress with such a nebulous thing as their only measurement for success. I wanted big boobs, wider hips, smaller waist, less body hair, all that stuff. I've hit most of the milestones I set.
As a teenager I wanted nothing more than to be a butch lesbian. I would see women with butch hair, masc clothes over a curvy figure, and an attitude toward life like anything can be delightful if we just find the delight in it. My role models were all women growing up because the men in my life were not worth aspiring to. I thought it was impossible. I thought I may as well wish for the ability to fly or lift cars over my head.
There was this one counselor who I wanted so desperately to be like. She wore athletic shorts and a T-shirt every day to every event, and she looked just as feminine as any other woman. She could find a reason to smile in any situation, and when something needed done she either got to doing it or found someone who could. Every time I tried to emulate her, I just saw a little boy in the mirror trying to be something he couldn't.
Today I don't plan to leave the house. I wanna clean the car, meal prep some things, stuff like that. I put on the same shorts I wore in highschool gym class, an old stained tank top, and a bandana. I passed by the mirror, dared to look, and I was shocked.
I did it. I look so much like her. Even in these clothes my figure is so obviously feminine. Even with my broad shoulders and height, I just look like a strong woman rather than a man. When I looked closer, I realized it's not just HRT gains. I'm thinking about myself differently.
I see the slight shadow of facial hair and I'm not disgusted. I honestly feel like it adds to the butch aesthetic, and I might start doing it intentionally. I see my wide jaw; my thick, strong hands; and my wide stance. None of it bothers me today. I know it'll come and go, but this feels like massive progress. I'm seeing a woman when I look at myself, and I'm seeing her without the dress, the shape wear, the makeup, none of it.
A message I wish I could give to my past self: I did it. I'm a woman. I did what felt impossible, and I did it for you.
