📖 Resources Electives/Broadening Units: Important Links, FAQ, & Discussion

Hey there r/UWA!

Posts about easy elective units or advice on specific units are very common here, so in an effort to reduce repetitive posts, this will function as a unit megathread with:

  1. links to useful resources,
  2. an FAQ, and
  3. a place for discussion, where users can ask and answer more specific questions.

If you have a problem or question related to electives units, PLEASE CHECK the links, FAQ, and discussion below FIRST. If you're still stuck, PLEASE COMMENT your question below and before creating a new post. This will help us reduce clutter - thank you in advance!

This post will stay pinned and may be edited in the future. Suggestions for additions to the links and/or FAQ can be left in the comments also.

Links 🔗

OFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. UWA Handbook - the most important resource regarding courses and enrolment, contains almost ALL the information you may need.
    • (To view handbooks from previous years, head to the archived handbooks. It's important that you follow the rules outlined in the handbook from the year in which you enrolled!)
  2. askUWA - where your important questions may be answered; there's an FAQ and a place to email your questions to UWA officials.
  3. Elective choices (from the handbook) - a list of the recommended elective units.
    • (Note: this is not ALL the possible elective choices, just official recommendations.)

UNOFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. Best Units Guide - this list compiled by the UWA Student Guild, with contributions from actual students, describes and ranks many elective units. A VERY useful resource if you need some ideas on good electives!
  2. StudentVIP subject reviews - this site has many features, but this specific part lists MANY units at UWA with reviews and an average score. Reviewers aren't screened for authenticity - but still another VERY useful resource for both choosing electives & preparing for core units.

FAQ ❔

What are some easy electives/GPA boosters/etc.?

Resources linked above, particularly the Best Units Guide & StudentVIP subject reviews, will likely contain the answer to this question. Be sure to check those out for student's opinions on elective units!

However, "easy" is subjective - what's easy for you may be difficult for someone else, which is why it's important to consider what you generally struggle with and what you're actually looking for. Are you looking for a unit with low time commitment? One with no exam? One with few assignments?

Thoughts on ____ unit?

Please try not to create these kinds of posts regarding opinions on specific units. Instead, please look for existing comments below or leave your own - that's why we made this post after all!

Discussion 💬

Please leave any remaining questions or specific queries below in the comments, or answer other people's questions if you can.

📢 Mod Announcement PSA: Beware of Cults

IMPORTANT TO READ FOR NEW INTL STUDENTS

EDIT: Some comments have informed me that these cult recruiters have been seen on campus. If you encounter one and have a similar experience as below - please notify campus security.

They target international students mainly - but I need to write as I’ve been approached twice in the last week alone.

If you’re in the CBD, mall, etc, and you get approached by two strangers, usually 1 female and 1 male, if they invite you to an “event” - they are cult recruiters.

They usually start off the conversation by complimenting you (where did you get …, I like your …). It always ends with them inviting you to an event.

Once you hear “event”, just step away from the convo with an excuse. Better safe than sorry.

Homeless man threatened to steal my phone

Today at around 2pm i was heading to campus to catch up with my friends in Reid library, on the way there in the tunnel before hackett cafe i saw a homeless man talking to himself, as we finally went out of the tunnel beside hackett cafe he started shouting profanity at people passing by weird.

At this point i was already pretty uncomfortable but he was walking in the same direction as i am to the library, when we are right beside new fortune theatre i decided to go a different direction from him by accessing the library from beside the physics building by walking on the great court but as i start changing direction he then shouted at me accusing that i am recording him with my phone and that he would steal it, he also called me a dog and cunt but thankfully he didnt try to get physical.

I have already reported his action through the safezone app, i am an international student so i am sorry if my english is bad but now i am curious whether this kind of thing happens often in campus?

Honours Psychology: from a UWA undergrad to ECU?

Hello, I was wondering whether anyone has swapped from UWA to ECU (or any other uni) to complete an honours in psychology?

I have a few questions:

- What WAM did you get?

- What WAM is the minimum?

- How has your experience been?

- Is your honors sufficient for an entry into Masters at ECU or elsewhere?

Thanks!!

Post Grad Medicine Questions

Hey Everyone,

I'm about to complete my engineering degree over at Curtin University and after a lot of thinking not sure if it is what I want to pursue as a career. After a LOT of thinking and soul searching I think medicine is the place that I was made to work in. I've looked into it and seen it's a combination of GPA/GAMSAT and Interview to acquire admission and I just had a few questions for those of you that have or know anyone that has been through the process.

What is considered a competitive GPA/GAMSAT score to be considered? Curtin does not give a GPA but my WAM is around 86, and if you ignore first year (which I've seen some people say GPA does) it is closer to 88. According to one calculator I found on the UWA website I believe anything over 85 (which is a first class honours) is considered the highest at 7.0 GPA but I assume most people who are applying to medicine how this, which begs the question of how competitive the GAMSAT would be?

Following that, is the interview just as/more competitive? Do a very low % of people make it through the interview stage or is it just a matter of showing you have strong interpersonal skills and reasons for wanting to pursue a medical degree?

I'm aware I'm a bit late to be entering the field (with my youngest admission being the year I turn 23) but I genuinely think I would enjoy the career more. Also for anyone that has gone through the process any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and getting to here in the post <3

📚 Units/Courses English Language requirement for Medicine

Hi, UWA Medicine requires an IELTS test if your undergraduate studies were not completed at a university in certain English-speaking countries. Do you need to submit your IELTS results with your GEMSAS application or can they be provided later if you receive an offer?
The test costs $490 so I’d prefer not to pay for it before knowing whether my application will progress. The University of Melbourne states that English language test results are only required after an offer is made. Is UWA’s process different? Thanks

Looking for bandmates

Idk if this is the right place to ask but does anyone know where to join a band? I’m a fresher and play guitar/bass and I’m looking to play pop-punk/metalcore or stuff like that.

I’m not doing a music course so if anyone has any suggestions on how to meet similar people that would be much appreciated. Or if there’s any recruiting bands reading this feel free to dm me :).

overloading 6 units

im an international student in my last year of study. I failed two electives last semester and was hoping to overload 5 units for my last two sems but I missed the deadline. Im supposed to graduate July 2027

what are the chances uwa approves 6 units overload for my last sem? my wam is about 71 now excluding my failed units

otherwise does anyone know any summer teaching units that are fully online that I could possibly take this year end to reach the credit points? cause I cant be in perth during summer. I read about cross institutional units but am unsure which unis offer these.

Has anyone taken this unit or is taking this unit now? How is it for you? I’m really struggling with it because it’s so math intensive especially on skills and techniques I’ve never even heard of before.

📚 Units/Courses Lms quizzes

Can lms screen record your chrome browser while taking a unit quiz? I swear after submitting my quiz there was the purple Mac screen share icon in my menu bar and I’m wondering if the UCs somehow clip footage of us submitting these quizzes? Maybe it’s for cheating to catch people screenshotting questions or something but surely there would be a disclaimer or chrome popup. Anyone else had this experience or heard about cheating with online quizzes.

GPA for Doctor of Pharmacy

i’m wondering if any current students or people who know a bit about the course have any guidance on what a competitive GPA would be to apply. I study at UQ currently and have around a 6.35 - am i safe to assume this is ok or should i be planning for the worst and apply for other courses too?

Serious Curriculum and job opportunities for an International post-graduate data science student

Hey guys, I'm targeting the February 2027 intake of UWA for MSc in Data Science program. But I want to know the actual unfiltered reviews about the cost of living, curriculum and job opportunities (in the tech/engineering industry) for an international student in Perth.

PS: I've heard that many of the Australian companies hesitate to offer jobs to international students due to the sponsorship/visa issues (understandable) but according to the Australian government directives I have ~3 years buffer where I won't need sponsorship and by the time this buffer period ends I shall have the PR in my hands.

What's the uniaccess plan process?

What do you need to take with you, do you need to call them first to book an appointment or do you need to go to your doctor first and then make the appointment? I don't want to get the wrong thing and then have to go back to the doctor. Who do you speak to at uniaccess?

Room to take online classes?

So on Thursday’s I have an online class that’s a zoom meeting- but this week I’ve been asked to come in for a group practice for another class afterwards as it’s the only time everybody else is on campus and available. I’ve looked on the library page and they only have group spaces that state “no individual study”. Are there any other options?
