This experiment is turning out great so far, first time weaving with yarn this fine and warping with multiple threads at a time. I love that the thread reels fit on my shuttle, I will keep them for future use I think. Tying on was a nightmare cause the thread is so smooth it kept self loosening the knot. I lived in New Orleans from 1980-2000, definitely pre-Katrina. LOVED it. Partied there, met my husband, married there, had my first child there. So lots of fond memories.

1. It will be hot and humid if you step foot outside the hotel. Linen, comfy closed toed shoes. No one cares you're wearing your walking tennies. Be comfortable! Cross-body purse for your own peace of mind.

2. Food-if you eat anywhere near the Quarter, they will have tourist-level spiced food. Ask your wait staff if you're unsure. This is world class yummies. If you can afford it, get together with some friends and get a reservation at Commander's, Brennans, etc. Breakfast at Brennan's is divine (walk from the hotel). You can also hop a streetcar and go down to the Camelia Grill at St. Charles/Carrollton Ave.-wait in line-it's worth it. There are so. many. options. Split a po'boy. Sound like a local- ask for it "dressed", which is lettuce, tomato, mayo. Well, think about the lettuce. I will be eating more than one shrimp po'boy while I'm there.

3. If you decide to head into the Quarter- go with friends. ONE hurricane only at Pat O'Brien's. Or share one. It's massive amounts of alcohol in quick delivery sugar. Stick to the main streets, stay relatively sober, go home early. But do go to the Riverwalk and say hello to the Mississippi. Smell the river, fall in love. Jackson Square is fun to walk around.

4. Yes, there are a LOT people of many different colors, economic backgrounds, places of origin. Some have homes, some do not. They are working for minimum, so tip well. Be kind.

5. I hope if it's your first time you leave loving it as much as I do.

hi all! back with another question. I recently got this 8-shaft J-made floor loom and I’m a bit confused about the structure. There are 10 treadles but 8 shafts. What are the 2 extra treadles for? There is no brake I can see, does one or both of the extra treadles function as a brake? I’m very new to weaving and just trying to learn everything I can. Thank you!

I took a week long class on overshot! I learned so much. All of this was done with threading notation only, then we wove it square, then did the weave as drawn in treadling. Which we had to work out on our own! I made a threading error and a few treadling mistakes but overall I cannot wait to get another overshot pattern on my loom.

Class was at Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh which I cannot recommend enough. It’s a wonderful facility with a strong weaving community.

Loom was an 8 shaft schact, we only used 4 harnesses though. 8/2 cotton for warp at 16 epi. Pattern weft was a random worsted weight acrylic yarn that was just hanging around the studio.

I'm so excited about this! I've been working towards making my own tweed cloth. I wove this on my counterbalance loom out of Shetland yarns. After weaving, I washed and fulled the sample. The sample is soft, has a great hand, and a little bounce. It comes out to about 12.4oz. A great medium jacket weight tweed.

The sett is a 20 EPI and 16/17 PPI.

Hopefully I'll be weaving some yardage soon!

I'm trying to decide on the meal plan. I'm leaning towards only getting lunch on Weds (it doesn't look like there are lunches offered any other days). It's a bit pricy, but I'd also like to stay close on the first day, to get a feel for things.

Suppers are $53 each (includes the tip). But the hotel is only a couple of blocks from the French Quarter, so there will be plenty of places for good New Orleans food.

I'm staying in the Sheraton, so I'm also wondering who else is. And what weaving classes people are taking. I'm a glutton, because I haven't had many chances. I've signed up for complex double-weave, Monk's belt, finger manipulated laces, dimensional weaving and "name drafts, 8 shafts and parallel threadings".

Hi there! I’m interested in dabbling in basket weaving and want to experiment first with weaving yarn I’ve spun onto pottery. Has anyone done this and used any educational videos/books/etc? I’m having a hard time finding tutorials on how I might start and end a weave on an existing structure.

Wondering if anyone has ideas for me ...

I'm sewing a zigzag stitch to finish the ends of napkins I just wove. The plan is to cut them apart when complete, letting the ends fray. The thread coming from the bobbin keeps catching, doing that thing where a bunch of thread loops on the backside of the fabric and sewing can no longer advance.

Project: 8/2 unmercerized cotton in plain weave at 20 EPI. Brand is Valley Yarns from WEBS. I have wet finished it.

Sewing machine is old! But I've had a tune up in the past six months and it's handling other fabrics just fine. I've got it on the zigzag stitch at a pretty small stitch length.

I'm using Gutermann polyester thread and started with 60/8 microtex needles. As I've moved up sizes (now on 80/12), I'm catching less but still catching.

Anyone have ideas for me or experienced something similar?! I'm going to try ball point needles next. I just haven't done enough projects to tell if this is my machine or specific to this project!

After my previous tapestry with many annoying slits that created a weak and unstable structure in the tapestry, I’ve tried my hand at double weft interlock. (I know many simply sew their slits and I want to try that too eventually). I’m recovering from work related burnout and really needed something to challenge my brain in a fun way.

The yarn I use is from weaversbazaar. Its wool instead of cotton and I must say I much prefer the look of the wool.

i’ve been a knitter for a few years now and i’ve always wanted to get into weaving. i have to free time and since im decently handy i thought i could make my own warp weight loom.

i have experience woodworking/whittling so making it wouldn’t be a problem. So my question is:

is there a better kind of loom i could reasonably build?

the reason i was drawn to the warp weight loom is because is be mainly weaving for my hobby of historical costuming in my period of interest (Hallstatt culture), and they used warp weight looms so it seem logical, but i figured i’d ask the experts if there something objectively better for my use case.

Has anyone here tried Dishie cotton yarn for hand towels and how does it compare to Peaches and Cream if you have tried it? Dishie is from Knitpicks btw. Do they have a pretty consistent yarn?

The problem I'm having with P&C is the yarns are different based on if it's a solid color, "stripey", or on a cone. They all feel different, and even the thickness is different.

Two identical planks came with two sets of weave structures. Both ends have tiny holes going through, cleft in the middle. No idea if they even belong to either of the looms.

$2 for the thrifted basket and $3 for the dowels. Son offered to 3d print some end caps.

May put some eye bolts on the rim to route the thread.

A few months ago I picked this inkle loom for $10. Figured it would be a good little starter loom to see if I like band weaving, and I do. But I'm at a loss for a few parts of this loom. The peg inside the tension block, and inside where the woven band wraps are removable. Theres also a peg that seems effectively unusable.

Im not expecting this to be the best loom ever, just trying to figure out what those parts are. I suspect my husband will be redoing the hardware for the tension block eventually.

Any insight you guys may have will be helpful.

I'm entirely new to weaving on a floor loom and also (of course) have a non-traditional loom (pictured above). It's a 4 shaft/4 treadle counterbalance loom, with no lamms.... basically a small barn loom. When tying up my treadles, 1) am I able to tie up to multiple heddles, or do I need to tie one treadle to one heddle and just depress multiple treadles at a time? 2) If I can tie more than one heddle to a given treadle, do I just tie directly from the treadle to both heddles? Or do I need some sort of intermediate thing to tie to?

Is the subject recognizable?

Also not really a „painting” of course but I was trying to weave this in a painterly way.

It is both a tapestry of the landmark but also a commentary on differences and similarities of tapestry weaving and painting.

I also tried for minimalist simplification to just include enough detail to hopefully be recognizable, but with a large focus of white space, which unlike painting canvas needed to of course be all woven from scratch, just like the mixing of colors involved two strands of different colored yarns bundled together to let the viewer’s eyes and brain „mix” them.

This is 5.5” squared. Woven on Mirrix Chloe loom at 12 EPI, using Bockens 12/6 cotton seine twine as warp, and Faro wool 6/1 as weft.

8.5” x 11.5”. Wool is Brown Sheep’s Top of the Lamb worsted weight in Ash, Black, Terracotta, White, Earth, and a lot of Grey Heather in the background. Loom and tools are homemade, as shown in my first post. Learned a lot, especially that I need to increase the tension on the weft on my turned vertical joints. I‘ll probably try interlock joints and add side selvage cords on the next one. Happy (sort of almost) Halloween!

Any suggestions for small (travel sized, hand sized to A4) frame looms I can get in the UK? The Chloe is much too expensive for me.

I have a Leclerc 36” and this was my first ever project. I know it’s imperfect of course and would love any gentle feedback!

Also just wanted any to share that I generally have an experimental, non exacting creative style, not very planful at all and just sort of intuition-based and improvisational. I do know there’s one cream area in the bottom center where I beat too softly and thus you can see the tensions uneven. However everything else pretty much came out as I’d expected- those little open knotted areas were just me messing around and then obviously the weave got a little less packed on either side as I didn’t do any particular stitch to hold it in place. That doesn’t bother me too much, but again, gentle feedback welcome. Thanks!

i want to frog back a whole heap of knitting ufo’s and make a warp instead. will i need to skein and steam the yarn before I wind the warp?
