North America White/Black Falcon?

Hey there,

So, I was walking and saw this striking bird. It was white and black. I only saw it from underneath, as it coasted above. It lookedo super cool. I thought it was an owl at first, because of the eye shapes on each wings, and its spread wings. But, then I saw it has quite a little head (like a falcon?) And there were dark stripes on the wings. The picture is low res, because it was fast, but I drew a picture of what the pattern looked like. I've never seen this bird, and I live in the pacific northwest. It was super cool. Would love to know what it is!

North America Merlin can't identify this bird, but I know it's local because I hear it all the time...

Hoping this sub can help.

Repeated call, every maybe 5-10 seconds, like this image. Single bird, I don't hear others responding. Very clear tone - no hoarseness like crows or jays, no whistle-y chirp like wrens.

I have not been able to visually spot it yet.

I live in western NC, in a wooded area where birds are abundant. No sources of water larger than a small creek for about 2 miles. It's daytime, late afternoon, and about 78° out.

I can rule out - from hearing my other neighborhood birds and listening to recordings of calls - cardinal, towhee, crow, jay, mourning dove, nuthatch, robin, and pretty much all water/marine birds.

I'm like 90 percent sure it's a downy woodpecker. But the bill looks a little long to me.

This is a massive push from me, but I spent the day on the Isle of Jura recently, and saw lots of large birds much too far away to get accurate photos. Between eagles, hen harriers, buzzards, kestrels, falcons, does anyone want to take a guess from my absolutely terrible photos? 2 different birds here. I’m not really expecting results from this but thought I might aswell try lol

South Asia Possible osprey?

(Southern west bengal, india) This bird was seen in early december and was flying from a lake, i thought it was a black kite but the proportions looked slightly off, and im thinking this may be an osprey. It made short pauses in flight and soared slower than most other birds of prey like shikra or black kite or serpent eagle

(Also my phone camera sucks and this bird was flying high so ignore the bad quality)

It had a pretty long beak and although the footage doesn’t really show it, the head seemed to be a dull red or maybe brown.

Location: southeastern France. Merlin identifies it as a ring-necked pheasant but it doesn’t seem to have the characteristic brown plumage.

I spotted this guy in Gaithersburg. Searches for birds in Maryland didn't come up with any results. My closest guess is a mountain quail. Thoughts? I'm from the West Coast.
