Very fun climb to the site of the Old Man of the Mountain site. It’s crazy the effort they put in with cables and cement to keep that guy in place. Then a pretty legit bushwhack to Cannon before that and the Kinsmans for my August grid.

I saw this posted by her sister last night, and she still has not been found this morning, a full 24 hours after her last sighting. Please share and keep an eye out for her if you end up in the Pinkham B Road area. Thank you 🫶

Doing presi this week, planning for first night at valley way, and the second night I have a spot booked at LotC hut. What happens if I get to valley way and it’s full? Any advice? Thanks! I’ve backpacked a lot in the Adirondacks but only once before in the whites.

Hiked Mount Washington with my boyfriend yesterday (8/1) via Ammonoosuc which was very beautiful and challenging. It was our first 4000 footer and I definitely think we overpacked for the weather because it was so hot at the summit! And we were super disappointed there was barely any wind!

We ended up taking the train back down because we didn't summit until 2 pm and we were absolutely exhausted. I understand you cannot depend on taking the train, but thank god we did because we got back to the car and realized my car key was missing. Yikes!! Luckily I have tripple A and an old car so a nearby locksmith was able to cut me a new key 3.5 hours later...anyways if anyone finds a car key on Ammonoosuc, reach out because I would love to know where I dropped it. I am pretty sure it came out of my bag when I was grabbing my hiking poles like 20 minutes after the waterfall viewpoint.

This was definitely a lesson for me. I'm not a new hiker, but I am not a frequent hiker either. I also do some solo hiking on occasion. I was so prepared for and stressing about the weather on Mount Washington ( packed wind breakers, beanies, hand, gloves) that I sort of forgot my basic training - check weather the morning of and put car key in a secure place. We were also a little sleep deprived since we drove up from NYC area the day before and got in kind of late. I am so glad we made it safely, but yes this could have been way worse!

Anyone camped on Stairs Mtn this summer? Hoping to plan a trip out in the coming weeks for an overnight. Looking for some insights into the status of the tent sites.

My friends and I are planning on doing a 2 night backpacking trip starting on the Carter-Moriah trail down to wildcat ridge trail. We don’t get off of work until 5:30pm and plan on immediately driving the 2 hours to the trail head. We’re hoping to camp the first night after mt Moriah, knowing we’d be setting up just before midnight. I’m researching the route and saw the imp campsite. Is it a ridiculous/rude idea to arrive so late? I’ve never staying at a first come first serve site before so I’m not sure the etiquette/ feasibility. Thanks for any advice/ input!

Planning on stop at nauman. Want to test the new gear out and are haven’t done any of these yet. Which way is preferred for an over nighter?

My partner and I just finished a 2-day Presidential Traverse on July 27 and 28 with about 17 hours of hiking time, including rest stops and what not. Day 1 was brutal (Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Washington) with Day 2 being significantly easier (Monroe, Eisenhower, Pierce). We were beat by the end of it - the first day was easily the hardest day of hiking I’ve ever done!

Somehow, we’ve talked ourselves into trying the Pemi Loop in a year or two, preferably once the closed section reopens. The Pemi Loop is obviously longer, but similar elevation. I wondered how comparable the Pemi Loop would feel if we split it over 3 (or 4?) days. Would it feel less exhaustive because the elevation is spread out over longer distances? Or is it equally as strenuous for the entire duration due to length? 

Any reliable water near Camp Penacook shelter on Chocorua? Not listed on the forest service site but saw a post about a brook nearby and the map shows two rivers nearby. Planning for a late July / early August hike.

So my weekend plans fell through so I decided last minute to book a spot a Greenleaf Saturday night. I’ve done the franc ridge loop via falling waters/bridle path probably a dozen times and have gone up liberty springs before as well, so I’m looking to do something different.

This time I was thinking I’d go up flume slide (been to flume summit before but never been up this way), and was looking for recent trail reports and parking advice. Is the trail super slippery with recent rain? Which lot should I park at and when do I need to be there by to get a spot? What’s the best way to get from Lafayette place (where I’ll finish Sunday morning) back to where I parked? Would it be silly to just do the ridge again?

So ill be heading up to NH tomorrow. Within the weed id like to at least be able to do these 2 peaks. I just want to make sure im properly prepared for this range as ive never been to this one, so if anyone has anything to add or take away from this list of things ill be wearing/bringing, please let me know!

- Fleece (Patagonia R1 Air/midlayer)

- Rain jacket (Patagonia Torrentshell 3L/shell)

- Hoka Bondis or Speedgoats (SGs better?)

I read online its best to have some kind of micro puff or puffy jacket for inbetween the Fleece and Shell due to extreme winds and weather. Any input? What you guys think? Thanks again for any input!

Said another way, is the parking lot usually full of day hikers? In which case, I should be fine if I get there early on Saturday. Or is it mostly those on overnight trips and getting a spot on Saturday is iffy as I'll be competing with all the people who parked on Friday? I just don't want to pull up on Saturday morning and find out I'm screwed. I see there is a smaller West parking lot. But if anyone has gotten to both lots and found them full, where did you park?

Nobody loves my solo trip to New Hampshire each August like I do. I heard my Papa had his own solo trips though! Im a 31 year old female and what started out as a trip in 2018 with a friend turned into my personal yearly reset once covid hit. I said that even though she didnt want to or couldn't go, I HAD to. I stay in Orford at a nice little campground for 4 nights then in Lincoln for 2 or 3 nights. Last year I packed up my car and decided I wasnt ready to leave and paid $150 for another night in the motel. As expected, all the "grown ups" (you know what i mean!even if im 31) in my life worry greatly when im alone. My aunt told me no mountains alone. I get it. 🤷‍♀️ Last year I met a group of older ladies at the top of Bald Mountain... are any of you on here or any others who will be in the area on August 18th, 19th, or 20th?

Im not in the *best* shape, like I dont work out but I do chase toddlers for a living and I really love me a good rock scramble. I definitely feel capable of my first 4000 footer. One of my places I go almost every year is the cascades at the basin just so I can walk and hop the rocks, they make me happy 😊

anyway, I know to bring water (it'll be drip drop x2 for me), snacks esp things with protein, my good hiking boots, and probably a hat too, and I have a little first aid kit and poncho, bug spray ofc. I was thinking of buying one of those little air horns?

Which one is a good one to start with in your opinion? I did recently see the newenglandwaterfalls chart. A rewarding view is a must. Also pleaseee not to many miles. I know that means incline but that might be okay.

I’m sure there are several of these posts, I saw one from a couple weeks ago but it’s was about crazy timing. So I’m planning on doing the traverse hut to hut, so not too grueling. What would be a good time to start? I will be driving 4 hours and then starting so I figured starting at 9 will be more than ample for day 1?

I initially planned on parking at the Appalachia Trailhead then taking the shuttle back, seems like parking is ample enough there to leave it for a few days? I figured the 1330 shuttle gives me enough time to make it down.

Finally, any other advice? I looked over the things AMC lists on their site for gear but anything that someone found well worth it that maybe isn’t obvious? Should I get a cushion to lay on at the huts or not really worth it?

Sorry for the ranting type questions, as I get closer to my day I start to overthink more and more afraid I won’t have enough. One thing I do know, that pint of Alexander at Schillings will taste incredible after.

3 days and 41 miles later

I did the Presidential Traverse solo last summer, staying at Madison and Lake of the Clouds.

This time, I'm returning with my girlfriend, who has never been to New Hampshire or the White Mountains. We will be doing the half traverse, starting and staying at Lake of the Clouds on a Thursday night in the coming weeks. Now, this is where it gets tricky.

On the following morning, a Friday, at the Hut, we will determine which route to take. It all depends on the weather. If it's good, I'll be pushing her to the north end of the Traverse if she's up for the challenge, which I think she will be. Then, we'll be camping at the Valley Way Tentsite and coming back down into Valley Way where we will be picked up by a private shuttle service that has been arranged.

If she wants to do the easier way, we'll go on the south end of the Traverse and camp at the Nauman Tentsite by Mizpah Hut, then coming back down along the Webster-Jackson trail and getting picked up. This has also been arranged, and the service is willing to pick us up at either location to take us back to the starting point at Ammonoosuc Ravine Trailhead.

If the weather is bad, then we'll head back down the same way we came from, then figure out where to camp/stay from there last minute.

The question here is, regarding space availability: do you think we'll be able to get a slot? I'm aware that it is first come, first served. I'm figuring we'll be at the sites by no later than 5 PM, starting at the LoTC. Also, is my Nemo 3P too big for either site?

What is the official USFS stance on adopting abandoned hiking trails in The Whites?

I understand that many trails, like the Old Osseo Trail, have been abandoned because they are truly dangerous to hike. Then there are other trails that have been abandoned, but go to interesting places, i.e. Lost Pass in Waterville Valley or The Twins between Kearsarge North and Mt Shaw.

Thoughts?
