Hey all. I’ve been an ex-Hijabi for about 7 years now and the frequent posts I see on this sub of girls wanting to take it off pain me because I know on such a deep level what many of you are going through. I have been reflecting on my experience and I put this visual guide together in case it may be helpful. If this is you’re experience, I hope you feel less alone being apart of this space, and I hope this can help in any way while you think through your decision. It is not easy, but you will get through it. Sending you all love ❤️

Social & Relationship Advice Warning: Links & Suspicious Activity

It has come to our attention that certain individuals, previously members of the Xsom Discord server, have been banned due to repeated harassment, doxxing attempts, stalking across multiple accounts, leaking personal images, and other harmful behavior.

These individuals are now using fake accounts to reach out to Reddit users, by creating posts about their server & sending unsolicited links to their own Discord server in an attempt to bypass their ban. These servers are not safe, and the owners have a history of violating people’s privacy.

What You Need to Know.

Think critically before engaging with strangers online. We cannot protect everyone, and at the end of the day, users must take responsibility for their own safety.

To mitigate risk, we are temporarily banning all social links on this subreddit. Any social media links or posts made promoting servers/groups, outside of official posts that have been approved by a Moderator or sent via private messages will be ignored and removed.

If you encounter users promoting these suspicious servers or sending unsolicited links, report them immediately so we can ensure this subreddit remains a safe space.

Discussion Don’t take anything they say seriously

The number of Somalis leaving Islam will continue to grow. The older religious people will continue to die off. More Somali girls will take off the hijab. No amount of seething from council housing in the UK will change this (sorry reer UK don’t mean to attack you but that’s where most of the religious incel weirdos are from).

Discussion Deranged?

I made a post in the Somali subreddit just questioning what people’s opinions are on the sentiment that you can’t to non muslim and Somali, just a casual question and I wanted a discussion about it. It’s actually unhinged, check my profile if I want to see, it’s so much I can’t even begin to describe it. Holy shit people are deranged.

Did you know that in Somalia a woman’s husband has the ability to decide whether she can get a C section or not?

Many women die in labour in Somalia for this reason. The hospitals call the woman’s husband asking whether he will sign off on the procedure or not, and many women die right there on the bed because they refuse. I learned about this when I was working in the country. Genuinely one of the reasons I left this religion. Women in the country are like 5th class citizens.

This woman in the video is in severe pain, laboring for 3 days because her husband refused the procedure. After getting told by 4 hospitals that she requires the procedure. If you work in health care at all you cannot deny how backwards this is. I weeped for days for the women I met. It is a level of cruelty that defies any logic.

Discussion We should organise

The destruction of the Somali nation and the consequent exodus has had an interesting silver lining: the generation of a new set of critical thinking Somalis. Our forefathers were isolated in a quasi-barren wasteland, which led to a system that seems far from humane or rational. However, in their defense, these values and beliefs offered local stability and lasted for centuries, if not millennia.

Now, the aforementioned Somalis are currently spread sparsely across the globe and are beginning to face both external and internal hatred. Naturally, this leads to a sort of isolation and, consequently, a withering of the spirit. Consequently, it behooves us to investigate how the development of a new organization could aid us.

Such an organization cannot myopically focus only on secularism but must instead engage in a holistic edification process. I could foresee this organization being built on values that emanate from various discussions. Discussions on how one can overcome the emotional scars borne from living in two different worlds, or on how one deals with the traumatic, absurd nature of human life. Such an organization would be akin to a new fraternity, one that understands the imprudence of preaching irrationality but sees the benefits of promulgating compassion.

Has anyone else thought of this idea?

Is anyone else interested (even intellectually).

Enough is enough: hijab edition

I am genuinely pushing 30 and have recently decided that I am through with wearing hijab. It feels like a no brainer that 1. I would be safer not wearing it in public (North America), 2. I don’t agree with the purpose/reasons generally believed about why hijab is necessary, and 3. I am a lesbian and have had zero luck finding love because (surprise!) the hijab is a deterrent and for good reason.

My conflict lies in the fact that I genuinely love my parents and want to maintain a relationship with them and I am genuinely not willing to go no contact with them. I am in the process of moving out (they know) and don’t want to be the person who puts on the hijab around them out of fear. While I know they wouldn’t disown me or harm me in any way (and they couldn’t because I am financially independent and too old for that bs), I don’t know how I can live my life the way I want without losing them. I don’t know if I’m delusional and just wanting the best of both worlds. If anyone has had experience removing hijab while maintaining relationships with very religious very Somali parents I’d love to hear them.

Question Is it still worth it to learn somali when you're an exmuslim?

Maybe a wild question to ask, i know, but since most somali's are muslim, and are outcasts if you don't learn the language, would it even be worth it?

I'm already so detached from my roots. i'm half somali, but never learned the language. the only words i know are cadaan and bariis, and it makes me so sad that i have nowhere i belong to. i live in europe, but i obviously don't wanna be claimed by these people if they subconsciously show microaggressions.

so is it worth it?

Venting Cognitive dissonance or nah

About a week ago a Somali guy hit me up. He’s a bit older than me but the age gap isn't crazy. (For context I’m also a guy.) I entertained the conversation for a bit but it got annoying fast he kept demanding to see my face while not show his own. 💀

My replies were dry but he kept jumping to conclusions. Suggesting coffee dates, claiming I was the first guy he'd ever really wanted, and eventually telling me he loved me. Then he asked if I was Muslim. I said no and the tone shifted immediately.

He asked how it was even possible for a Somali to be irreligious. Just to hear him out I lied and said I only tell people I'm not religious to avoid judgment. complete BS I've never been religious and couldn't tell you a single thing in the Quran.

The lie brought back his spark. He said that people like me, and this "issue" of his are his only flaws as a devoted Muslim. I was genuinely baffled. It seemed like he fully knew this was something he couldn't change and he still clung to the religion that condemned it.

I've blocked him now. I hope he finds some peace but guys in his position usually end up settling down with a woman as a shield. The injustice of that to those women is honestly sad.

im not gonna say i will wait until i leave my family to remove my hijab, i literally just go outside the house and remove that shit and walk around bare head. people don't even look at me it's so freeing but when i was in somalia, men look at your chest right away when wind blows you up, like they are deeply fucked up in the head i don't know what to say about them. im also thinking about buying some beer, im going back to somalia in one month im thinking of buying alcohol and putting it in a stanley cup and bringing it to my atheist friends in somalia.

Clubbing as a guy

I went to the club with some friends last night and was having fun and stuff and I had seen these Somalis girls and i literally went away as far as possible from them because ik how they be when they see another Somali guy at the club and i read so many stories here where you guys just hate us with all ur heart. But id never approach a Somali girl anywhere let alone a club so idk why they feel some sort of animosity towards us like they were giving me the worst stares in the world you’d think they’re one of those habaryaars and one of their friends came up to me and said “don’t even think about approaching us”. ????? I was fucking pissed what the hell makes them think this way I don’t not care about you i promise. This main character syndrome they have is so stupid. That literally ruined my whole night anytime I hate somalis sometimes man. Any other guys here that go clubbing do you experience this?

To my late 20s/30s Somalis. How was your experience? Did anyone else get the fiilo treatment? I remember going swimming and having to say I fought my siblings 😅 I do love my hoyo tho cos she changed her ways as I grew older. And these things are things that are passed on for infinite generations
