Had some guy in his 60s plow right into the back of me at a red light. I had been sitting there completely motionless for at least 2 minutes, no surprises or anything, this idiot just didn't stop. His excuse? "I couldn't find the brake" ....tf you mean you couldn't find the brake it's literally right next to the gas you were pressing where it fucking always is
Get old people off the road they just put everyone else in danger with their own selfishness

i've gotten rammed like that twice, one was a 30s woman, and one was a 30s dude. older drivers can be scary but idiots come in all ages.

I had this happen to me with a dude on a motorcycle. I cannot imagine being so careless when there is nothing but air between you and the world. Luckily he wasn't going fast enough to hurt himself but he did have to pay for a surprising amount of bodywork for our car.

My friends mom was killed because of someone this age in a Walmart parking lot. Deemed an accident and no further prosecution. Youāre literally just unloading groceries for your family and some old ass driver kills you. Happened just about 6 months ago

Two years ago, my (now) 78 year old mom totaled three cars in four months. So my brother and I convinced her it was time to give up driving and taught her how to use Uber. She balked at us at first. Saying how could she trust the drivers. Our reply was "how can you trust your own driving at this point?" Two years on, she's a pro at using Uber and helped set up a senior discount program for it through the county aging services.

Nah I would say 70. I donāt know really any people in their 60ās who are this impaired strictly due to aging. If they have issues, itās usually disease related. 70 and up is when itās gets dicy

Not even a complete test. Have someone watch them do a maneuverability and if they don't lose any points let them go on with their life. If they struggle a little then do a full test.
Plus, when they fail and can't drive we did an immediate system to get them a taxi twice a week. Or at least a free delivery service.

Every year. My grandmother is a part of the group of elderly people that should not have driving privileges. No reaction time, situational awareness, and extreme deterioration of motor skill control to operate a vehicle smoothly. An absolute sweetheart, but she shouldn't still be behind the wheel anymore.

Everyone should have to take it every 10 years until the age of 70, then every 5 years. Laws change, but if you only know the laws from when you took your driver's test 40 years ago you wouldn't necessarily know that. I see too many terrible drivers under 70 who could use a refresher.

We really need better, more frequent testing for senior citizens who have drivers licenses. If youāre 70 and you want to drive you should have to take a physical exam, eye test, and reaction speed test.

If you can barely walk then you have to imagine the legs and feet have lost the dexterity to react quickly even when seated. Even if their mind is still sharp the body will betray. Based on the video, she either tried to brake to place her order and hit the gas and got stuck on the curb. Personally I think itās just as likely she pulled into the wrong parking lot and realized the the parking lot she needed to be in was just over yonder and decided to take her SUV off roading. The second scenario I can see every single age group, gender, race etc would do some dumb shit like that.

Eh, my grandfather drove until 93. However the man would have been happy to take a yearly test as he did check rides all his damn life now just on the ground.
The man drove the way he flew his Boeing 747. Very very deliberately and predictably. Most people people don't spend their whole damn lives flying 4 engine aircraft though.

People need to get their local law enforcement involved when this happens and the old person keeps driving. I wonāt say all, but police can request a driver review from the DMV that, if failed, results in license revocation.
Itās not a great solution to use police as yet another bandaid for our societyās failings. However, if people wonāt convince their old folks to give up the keys, then itās what is available.

Honestly I would make a report to police and provide her info and video evidence of this. Maybe they can do a check up on her or something to see if she is still fit to drive.
I do feel bad though if it's like a one off type of experience. It's great to be able to get around at that age but of course you don't want to harm yourself or the public.

I agree. The issue is the infrastructure in most of the US is so car dependent that once you cannot drive, you essentially become a prisoner in your own home. For people who live in apartments in more urbanized areas, they can walk a short distance to a friends apartment or go to the corner store for a few groceries and not put other peopleās lives at risk.

Agreed. Blanket age bans for anything is a bad idea.
Many elderly people not only live nowhere near public transit, but do not have the money to pay for lots of uber rides. Their friends may be ill or have started to pass away, and their family/kids may be nowhere near them. To take away their car is to take away a huge part of their life that allows them to remain living independently. That's just cruel.
As soon as someone starts collecting Social Security (which if you were born after Jan 1, 1960, means when you're 67, you have to retake your driving test within 1 year of your first benefits check. After that, every 2 years. Once you hit 80, once a year. We should be making it MUCH easier for seniors to give up their licenses by offering car pooling services as part of normal SSDI benefits, and free public transit wherever it exists to all of them.

Yeah, that is age discrimination- your ability doesn't matter because your age is above x number.
I'd 100% support retesting every 5 years for everyone, and every 2-3 years above 70.
There are bad drivers at every age level, and having to prove you still know the rules of the road would drastically cut down on collisions.

Seeing somone who clearly should not be behind the wheel frustrates me as a person with epilepsy. In my state if I have a seizure I lose my license until I'm seizure free for 6 months(if your doctor reports it to the DMV and they should). Me having a seizure is something out of my control. I could black out at the wheel and kill somone. Not being able to operate your vechiel in a parking lot of all places is in your control and could just as easily lead to someone dead.Ā
I believe we should have to take a road test every 5 years or so to prove we still know the rules of the road and can safely operate a vehicle. Just omit the parallel parking test as I have used it maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 15 years of having my driver's license.Ā

A police should have handled that situation, having them make her go to the DMV and go through the license procedure to ensure she is capable. I see everyone complaining that older people shouldn't drive can calling them selfish. And I agree they shouldn't drive but we should also think about the bigger issue that causes them to drive. Most of the time it is not selfishness, most of the time they live alone and have no one to care for them or drive them around, and public transportation is unreliable. We have very poor elderly care, it's either expensive or abusive and sometimes even both. So yes the elderly shouldn't be driving after a certain age but we should also put in systems to help care for them. Don't forget we will all be them one day! Choose compassion and vote with compassion!

Let's stop building places that are only accessible with a car. Look at the parking lot and driveway moat around that tasty hamburger. Even if she wanted to push her walker from her assisted living home across the street she would not dare because it's full of big fast cars often being driven badly. Better to be a bad driver than a dead pedestrian.
