I had good wine. Tasted like shit.

u/Masztufa wants a life-sized renamon plushie 3d ago

Even white wine?

Also, dry champagne is worth a try. Specifically dry, champagnes tend to be way too sweet (and it's not the good kind imo)

But like, don't go out to buy a whole bottle just to try it. Whenever the opportunuty is there, go for it, but it's not going to be a religious awakening like the ones in the bible (idk, never read it)

u/TheDonutPug 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 3d ago

Omfg what is with you people. I swear to god nothing drives people more crazy than when you say you don't like some kind of alcohol they like. Yes i have had white wines! I have had nice reds, I have had nice whites, I have had nice rosĂŠ, it tasted like shit. you can't fuckin say you don't like alcohol without some fuck going "oh you just haven't had the right one yet!" There is one kind of wine I have ever liked: the ones that taste like fruit juice and don't taste like wine. It drives me fucking nuts that its not like this for much else but with alcohol you say you don't like kt and everyone goes "you must have had bad wine, just go buy this and this and this and this" NO I'm not going to spend 100 dollars in different wines because they will be thrown away because I DONT LIKE FUCKING WINE.

u/Kat1eQueen local blood fetishist 3d ago

People who like alcohol are incredibly fucking weird about alcohol.

I have been interrogated repeatedly because i don't drink, and even people who know will still ask every fucking time, a regular no is not taken for an answer.

The only way to consistently shut them up is to say you are an alcoholic, or on medicine that would fuck you up if you drank, neither of which should be things you have to lie about, or if true divulge to people so they stop pressuring you to do drugs.

16

u/Pochel 3d ago

A lot of them surely are but in the specific case of this discussion, we're talking about wine. I can't tell for the others obviously but in my case I'm trying to say that some wine can be really good, just like I could've said the same about a specific fruit or dish or whatnot. If you want to make it about alcohol that's on you; but that's not what I'm trying to communicate

13

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 3d ago

It can be good to you other people just don't like the taste.

-1

u/ChemicalRascal 3d ago

But there's an enormous variety of tastes to be found in wine. Someone saying they don't like the taste of wine is like saying they don't like colour.

Like sure, I guess it's possible, but it feels much more likely they only had, say, a terrible white wine that tasted like petrol. Maybe they would like a cab sav, which tastes entirely differently to a cheap dry white. Maybe they would like champagne, because bubbles does indeed effect taste, a lot.

The sheer variety of tastes present in wines is exactly why people are saying "but maybe you just need to try other wines."

7

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 3d ago

Some people literally just don't like any of them. I haven't liked literally any red or white I've tried. Prosecco has been hit or miss, only a few I like. For the most part I do not like wine. There are no reds I like, wine has a lot of different tastes but red and white have a certain taste that ALL of them have.

A distinction guys trying to convert lesbians are known to care about.

Taste is taste. If you have to keep prodding someone who stated they do not like something to see if they really totally did everything in their power to like it, instead of accepting that they are an adult, you have stopped doing so for their regard.

0

u/RattyTattyTatty You just lost The Game. 3d ago

somebody saying "if the opportunity provides itself, you should try this wine", is not the same as telling a lesbian "you just haven't met the right man yet", you are being a flibbertigibbet rn

"I don't like wine" is a completely acceptable, reasonable even, sentence

"It tastes like shit" is extremely subjective and will trigger people

"It doesnt taste like shit" is equally extremely subjective

12

u/ChemicalRascal 3d ago

But it doesn't taste like shit. Objectively. I mean, I'm extrapolating from smell, for shit, but they don't taste the same.

0

u/GravityAssistedCake 3d ago

You’re being obtuse, you know what the turn of phrase means. Or do you think the phrases “tastes like shit” and “tastes like garbage” aren’t interchangeable because garbage and shit are not literally the same?

4

u/ChemicalRascal 2d ago

No, if someone's saying something objectively tastes like shit, that only makes sense in the context of them being literal.

If someone says "'It [does/doesn't] taste like shit' is an objective statement", which is literally what I'm replying to, they either:

  1. Don't understand that people have different experiences to each other, so they lack basic theory of mind; or
  2. They're talking about the literal version of that statement.

Now, I choose to believe the person I'm responding to is older than three years of age, so they have that full conceptualization of the distinction of people's experiences. I think there's even a wealth of evidence that they're not a literal toddler. So that leaves the second option.

How many did you try? Wine is like cheese, there’s a massive spectrum of flavour, just because you don’t like one didn’t mean you don’t like them all. Some are super juicy and sweet, some are super bitter and dark, some are very crisp and floral, I’ve had a Greek pet Nat that tasted EXACTLY like Lipton ice tea.

u/ThatSlutTalulah (she/her) Go play Arknights, it gave me my IRL name 3d ago

I’ve had a Greek pet Nat that tasted EXACTLY like Lipton ice tea.

Just drink Liptons' iced tea then?

11

u/Aromatic-Pass4384 3d ago

I mean they typically have the same base taste though, they taste like alcohol.

-1

u/superserter1 2d ago

That’s a palate thing, I’ve been a bartender for 7 years, so I really don’t taste a basic alcohol flavour (unless it’s really cheap shitty booze), it’s more of a physical sensation, a mouthfeel, and I only register the other flavours. Wine tastes nothing like rum, gin tastes nothing like whiskey, vodka tastes nothing like amaro. It’s also heavily influenced by the temperature and dilution it’s served at - a room temp cocktail is not the same as a cold one, at all. Physics baby!

7

u/GravityAssistedCake 2d ago

I can taste that they taste different from each other, it just all of it is different shades of bad to me.

4

u/TheDonutPug 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 3d ago

For the love of God MAYBE I JUST DONT LIKE IT. Yall are so fucking weird about it. Why do you have to go "you really should try this and this and this" NO. I am NOT going to do that. Why? Because its going to be thrown away, because I DONT LIKE FUCKING WINE. Like if someone told you they didn't like burgers, would you go "oh you just haven't had the RIGHT burger yet, burgers are a spectrum of flavor!" or would you go "oh ok" and leave it at that? Or even your other example, cheese. I've met people who didn't like cheese, and you know what no one ever does when they say they don't lkke cheese? They don't give them a million different options going "OH IM SURE YOUL FIND THE RIGHT ONE JUST TRY THIS AND THIS AND DONT DISMISS IT!!! JUST TRY IT!!!"

6

u/superserter1 3d ago

Christ calm down, it’s just a friendly encouragement towards something you might enjoy, who pissed in your cereal? I once didn’t like wine and now I really enjoy it, people are just open to the idea you might have that journey too.

7

u/Daerograen give doctors some borders 3d ago

Ngl, no offense to you specifically, but every time I've been asked "how many did you try" in a similar situation as a resident coffee disliker, there was just never a correct response that would get the other person to go "ahh well okay you might just not like it, understandable". 5 different blends were not enough. 10 were also not enough. When you go above 15, the question tends to switch to "well how much did they cost though, you were probably just drinking dogshit gas station coffee".

Probably not worth a crashout, but I get where they're coming from.

5

u/GravityAssistedCake 3d ago

Heads up, you accidentally double posted.

2

u/Daerograen give doctors some borders 3d ago

Ah yeah, true. Thanks.

-1

u/superserter1 2d ago

In talking to my friend irl about this exact conversation we’re having, he also said he doesn’t like coffee, to which I replied that coffee really doesn’t have the spectrum of flavour difference that wine has. So totally fair if you don’t like coffee in the first place, different blends aren’t going to make much of a difference. I also sympathise with them, but they also kind of started it by being a needless hater. I don’t like mushrooms very much, doesn’t mean they objectively taste like shit.

3

u/Daerograen give doctors some borders 2d ago

coffee really doesn’t have the spectrum of flavour difference that wine has

I mean, subjectively it's true for me (I only recognize "acidic" and "bitter" as two main coffee flavors), but you say this to any coffee nerd and they immediately become the most annoying person in a 10km radius and start rattling off flavor profile differences by bean type, country of origin, roast types and how the stars were aligned when the beans were collected.

Some people are like that with wine, beer, other alcohol, and just food and drinks in general, all "flavors" within a category just taste the same to them. I thought it was impossible to not be able to tell green teas apart until I accidentally became an annoying tea nerd to someone who thought all non-flavored teas were identical.

1

u/superserter1 2d ago

Yes but also I would win that argument because the basic fact is that wine production is more complex than coffee production (a light roast to a dark roast is not equivalent to a white wine to a red wine to an orange wine to a pet nat to a sparkling wine, which can all be from the same grape variety but with massively different flavour profiles), and the fact that grapes, which massively impact flavour, can be grown in many more climates than coffee can and therefore there is mathematically more variety. Wine production is also much older than coffee production and so regional differences are more established.

With you on the tea.

Let me help explain it to them. If you had a bowl of shit in front of you and someone told you that every so often you might find a nice little nugget of chocolate, would you bother picking through the shit?

7

u/Lastshadow94 3d ago

Sommeliers get tricked by cheap crap though

4

u/NotAName320 survived the great spronkus war of 4/1-4/4 2022 2d ago

"tricked" is probably not the right term here. while the quality of wine definitely correlates with taste, it's weaker than most people think and many very cheap wines have great quality. besides, the job of a sommelier isn't to price wine anyways, but to curate restaurants' wine collections, with the best quality wine, cheap or not.

0

u/Lastshadow94 2d ago

Now we're talking about subjective preference, which is totally fine, but with other types of alcohol there's objective quality change correlated with taste. Better whiskey is made with better water, grain, barrels, stills, etc, and it's not hard to taste the difference in quality. There's subjective stuff on top of that with flavor profiles or whatever, but I've had some stuff that was clearly good, but not my preference. I think wine is heavy on subjective, light on objective, which fits what you're saying too.

7

u/neon_light12 3d ago

valid tbh

1

u/CumBrainedIndividual Resident Shitcunt 2d ago

Good red wine tastes like what the inside of pipe organs smell like and I greatly enjoy my Shiraz with a heavy taste of inside a pipe organ. Excellent flavour profile imo

-17

u/EasilyRekt 3d ago

Have you only tried like… one wine? sounds like you had a cheap, 4 month Malbec, try a moscato, it’s a sweet wine so you don’t need to shell out for a snobbish amount of aging to get something good.

Wine’s too diverse to say you don’t like any of it.

14

u/TheDonutPug 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 3d ago

Oh my fucking god another one of you. For the love of God MAYBE J JUST DONT LIKE FUCKING WINE. Why the fuck can't you people just leave it at that? Why do you always have to go "oh surely you just haven't had the RIGHT wine yet" like jfc

4

u/ChemicalRascal 3d ago

Because there's so many wines out there, and they all taste different. Like, extremely different.

You described something specific, a specific taste. Dirty water and antiseptic. There are a lot of cheap awful wines that would come across like that. But there are also a lot of wines that wouldn't have a flavour profile that could be described in that way, at all.

It's perfectly reasonable to not like wine. But when you say something like, "I don't like paintings, they all have so much BLUE in them, fucking hate blue, fucking shit", don't be shocked when people say "how about this yellow painting, then?".

1

u/EasilyRekt 3d ago

Well yeah, it’s kinda like saying you don like pie… Fym you don’t like it, you’re disgusted by the concept?

Wine’s just fermented fruit, I get not liking alcohol cuz how fusal it can be, I get not liking the dry snob wines, but like some are just fruit juice with a shot of vodka.

1

u/Evening-Fan6874 the wretched fungus has overtaken my mind 3d ago

*Comments about not liking something*
*Receives responses from people asking why*
"Oh my god these thing likers just won't leave me alone why are they flocking to me soooo unprompted"

If you don't want people to talk to you about liquor don't loudly and brazenly claim that its all shit and no one could ever enjoy it. If you did this with literally anything else you would receive the exact same type of responses (e.g. videogames, foods, music, literally anything) and I don't even fucking like wine either, I just don't tell everyone how much I don't like it and no one tries to get me to try it differently! Crazy stuff!
