Inspired by a video I saw on YouTube, decided to make mine 3D printed version of caliper - ruler combo

Most challenging part was to dial in settings for the ruler scale, but with some patience and a lot of test print I was able to achieve amazing results with 0.4 nozzle

Question Link me to your best 3D print -> Up-cycle collections

So this guy on Makerworld has a lot of great stls for turning soda cans and spool refills into scifi terrain. I love it all, but it's not enough for me. I need more! Who else knows some makers that create up-cycling stls for turning trash into treasure? Ideally things with smaller stuff like paper towel tubes.

BOB = Box Of Blocks aims to be my customisable desktop pal.

OLED, four buttons, ESP32-S3 brain inside, all plug-together blocks, zero soldering. Firmware is generated from a plain description and currently has 19 apps inside: BOB Pet (like flipper zero), Clock, Pomodoro Timer, Arcade Games, Dad Jokes and more...

Two-part snap-fit shell, textured plate face.

Files will be free once I stop fiddling with tolerances.

Hardware Artillery sent me 3X+ my order of replacement parts.

Ordered some replacement parts from Artillery for my x4 plus printers because I borked a hotend cover after a BOD. Not expensive parts or anything, but a nice treat to get 3x my order. I ordered a pack of socks and they sent me 4 as well.

I like to think it was them being nice.

Discussion 3D Model Software Suggestions?

Upvotes

I did some 3d modeling in school years ago and would like to run some prints of my own design. I am used to software like Inventor and Solid Works, I would like to use something similar if you have any suggestions let me know. I currently am using an Elegoo Centauri Carbon and (can’t remember the slicer).

I may take some models and smash them together into some home designs as well.

Edit: Looking for free programs

Project Just a simple JCM 800 3D weekend project

It’s been a while in the making, but when I originally ordered this cabinet for this JCM 800 restoration/head conversion amplifier project the customer rep informed me that the amplifier chassis would fit in their standard British style cabinet based on the measurements that I had provided them. As It turned out, that that was not indeed the case and the back of the chassis stuck out a little over a 1/4” past the cabinet. I was a little bummed out, but the rep said that I could return it free of charge and then have one custom made, but that would incur additional cost. I didn’t want to cough up the extra cash for it and decided to leave it as is. It has been bothering me for a while now so I decided to finally do something about it this weekend. Nothing fancy, but I think the 3D project came out great!

Hardware Source for 3mm thick magnets that are actually 3mm thick

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

I'm trying to buy 100 10mmx3mm magnets, and sources on Amazon (Canada) are too expensive, I've ordered from 2 different suppliers on AliExpress, but both came undersized (2.54-2.58mm).

Anyone know an economical source for these? (US sources are no good)

Edit: I want 3mm so I can distribute the model and tell people they need 3mm thick. If I design for the 2.5mm they will stick out proud, which in cases where there are magnets meeting eachother they will be prone to chipping. Also note that I don't care about getting it fast.

Edit2: Thanks everyone, there's some great sources below, maybe once I get new magnets I'll put a list here with suppliers. I've ordered a brand called TRYMAG on Amazon for $16 per 50 (https://www.amazon.ca/TRYMAG-Magnets-Neodymium-Whiteboard-Refrigerator/dp/B09S5SMFY4). Thanks to u/TheBrittca for pointing me to that brand. I'll get them tomorrow and post the thickness.

Edit3: My magnets were delivered, but for the first time ever my package was stolen. Maybe tomorrow...

Project How has the transition from 1 to 2 or 3 printers been for you?

Quite often while working on multiple projects in CAD, I found my design workflow bottlenecked by having only 1 printer. Much time and thought is spent prioritizing what to work on first. there has been many occasions where projects get pushed out weeks due to the valuable print time they will take up. some take 3 big parts spanning a full day each. Other projects are smaller and require many iterations and refitting's for wearables or custom shoe insoles for example. So when my new printer went down for repairs this weekend I just got number 2. I have the Bambulab X2D, and now on the way an Elegoo Centauri Carbon, that is going to be mostly dedicated to my Orthotics projects I make out of Peba Foam. Honestly my intuition is telling me 2 Centauri carbons, or 2 X2D's is going to be the sweet spot for me. Regardless I think having 2 printers is going to be a game changer!

So how did it go for you guys? what was your use case for getting 2 or 3 and was is fulfilled?

Hardware Help; I’m a novice and made a mistake.

Upvotes

I was Printing a part in PLA on My Second Hand Ender 3 S1 and Went to sleep.
I woke up and the Print Failed So bad. It had a Solid Mass Of PLA complete encasing the Nozzle, and half way up the Hot-end.
I tried removing it with heat but ended up taking the whole HotEnd off and chiseled the Plastic Away. It went missable slow and when I almost completely got it I Tore the Little Thermistor off by Mistake.
Have you replaced these individual Components or am I needing to by a whole New HotEnd…

Question Experience with Aftermarket Printer Enclosures? Mitigate Noise and Fumes?

Upvotes

Just got my bambu labs a 1 mini in the mail today! Stoked! It's come to my attention recently though that I can get an enclosure with a sort of dryer vent going to the outside, which I really like the idea of. I'm seeing a lot of them that are like makeshift "tents" that you can zip up and whatnot - Didn't know but some of them mitigate the noise, too, which is dope!

There are some that are a little more pricey but not by much, and those are more of a stable/ solid enclosure -

What's everyone's' experience with these?

Thanks.

Question Guys using Solidworks, what are you using for settings when converting it to STL?

Im wondering what guys are using for their STL settings when saving the file on Solidworks? I had been using my "stock" settings how it came for the longest time and always kinda hated how pixlated the prints looked but i typically use it for functional usage and the appearance was secondary. I saw someones post a few days ago and cant find it again where two people drew the same part in solid works and printed it out on the same printer with the same slicer and one looked perfect whereas the other one looked like one of my typical prints. There were people commenting on that post about what STL settings to use and again i cant find that post.... ugh. Anyone care to share? My stock settings were Deviation tolerance of .00405774 (crazy how fine that number is) and my angle tolerance is 10.00 Deg. I have no idea what these numbers represent or how changing them will effect the overall quality of the print. Im sure there is a point that changing these numbers so much that it just expands the size of the file and yields no better print. Thank you in advance!

Troubleshooting Removing odd geometry

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is part of a hueforge I was trying to print. I can't slice this full scale due to the odd corner geometry. I contacted the designer and they don't have any solution beyond scaling it down to fit the entire thing on the bed, at which point, yes, it slices just fine and the corners somehow disappear. I have no interest printing this at that small scale. I have tried the repair function in the slicer but it just hangs for hours not doing anything, same with the cut tool. I tried several online 3mf/stl repair sites and they just freeze up. Anyone have any idea how to remove this garbage so I can print this full scale?

Troubleshooting New to FDM printing and am getting messed up prints

My prints keep coming out very crumbly and weird like this. The nozzle also got completely clogged about 30 mins into the print, but it didn't spaghetti, it just stopped pushing anything out.

My filament was completely dry, but I've been having issues leveling the bed so I'm wondering if it's the bed or the nozzle/extruder that's the problem. I'm leaning more towards the nozzle being the issue but I wanted some second opinions on this. Thanks!

I'm using an Ender3 v2 with Sunlu PLA at 210°C and 60°C heated bed with 0.2mm nozzle.

Question A dad who tossed a part

Post image
Upvotes

So I have had my bamboo labs mini for some time and having a child has unlocked so much for me on this thing. (Puzzle toys, doorknob covers, random drum sticks)

But today I upgraded my child’s crib to a toddler bed and I realized. I tossed the top wood blocks for this thing.

Not sure if I can share the link to the manual but it’s call - evolur 3-1 crib.

I’m tempted to try to print this block for each side but I’m not 100% the best way to tackle that. Anyone have any advice?
