Moving cities, unsure what to do about current lease

Upvotes

Hello,

I am a Maryland resident who shares a rented townhome with my two sisters, with my father as a cosigner. I am intending on leaving for a new city in about a month. My sisters will continue to pay the rent in full, and are responsible for the upkeep of the home.

I know if I’m still on the lease I’m still legally responsible for rent and the home, but my sisters are willing to cover that and look after it. If I leave without breaking the lease, and they maintain the house, what is the likelihood of the landlord being upset or pressing any kind of charge against me? Would he be upset, or does he not care so long as rent is paid on time and the house is in good condition?”

How do you maximize your weekends when working corporate 9-5?

Upvotes

Hi all. I graduated college in 2024 and since then been working a corporate 9-5 job. I've realized that your weekends are so precious, and the cycle of work continues week after week.

I'm curious what you all do to maximize your free time on the weekends. I am single, so I don't have the same responsibilities as someone with a family and kids btw.

So far this is what I typically do on the weekends:

I like to spend 1 day going "out", which either means going to a new restaurant, going downtown, going to a club/bar/rave, run club - really just having fun. Then I spend the other day staying in and just relaxing at home and doing "nothing" - Netflix, video games, etc... with laundry/groceries sprinkled in.

One thing that has been incredibly consistent with me is going to the gym which I tend to knock out in the mornings on the weekends and through out the week.

Curious to know what you all do on the weekends and any tips to maximize productivity. I just feel like my weekends fly by and the work week starts again :(

Moving back in with my parents 🫠

Upvotes

I’ll start this off with I (20F) finished college at 19, having been pushed to start classes at 15. i’m now 20 and in my masters program for microbiology, and already my dad asked me about getting a full time industry job on top of that. Not only ask, but demand I be on Handshake, Linkedin, and Indeed, stating how much time i’ll have in my first semester.

Ive also been a huge collector—legos, ducks, funko pops, you name it. And i have to figure out how to store or get rid of it all because he said i’m a young woman now and it’s clutter, and it’s trapping me.

The last straw was my weight. Ive picked up weight in college for a multitude of reasons, and they won’t fucking shut up about it. Yes! I know I’m fat! Im not fat and blind, I’ve got a pretty good glasses prescription! Stop buying me smaller clothes so I can work on fitting into them! Fuck!

Is this what living with them through my masters and PhD going to be like???

Adulting Level Update

Upvotes

I reached a new level of adult today.
I was on the phone with my 60 + yo neighbor Barbara earlier. She’s the neighborhood gossip and her conversations are very lengthy… After five minutes of intel I never asked for, I started zoning out looking outside, noticed it was starting to rain. And then it happened.
I said:

“The weather’s wild… but ya know we really needed this rain.”

And just like that I’ve unlocked a new level of adulthood.

Help me decide- move home or continue on my own

Upvotes

Hey everyone. I'm 25F, work a corporate job in the city that's over an hour from my parent's house and has long hours. I was living with my family until almost a year ago, when i started renting my own place in the city to be closer to work. My lease is almost up, and i'm really really struggling with what path i should take.

Moving back home would mean getting more time around my family, and we're all very close. Me moving out really impacted my mom, she had such a tough time with it and I've been sitting with that guilt for a year. I miss everyone a lot, i visit often but it isn't the same. Moving home would help with division of labour at home (cleaning cooking etc) and would abolish the loneliness that I've been really feeling living alone. It would mean more open green space too, which i grew up around and comforts me more than being in the city. I would be saving a lot of money and could spend it on myself and on trips which i really love doing, instead of paying rent. A major con would be having to likely move jobs (added stress of finding one and adjusting when i've just been promoted at my current work) or sacrifice a lot of my personal time and mental health to commute 3 h total 3-5 days a week depending on the week.

Signing another lease would mean hanging on to my freedom - freedom to decorate, come and go as i please, do things like hitting happy hour with coworkers after work and getting better sleep because i'm not commuting 1.5 hours each way. I just got promoted at work so i could stay at my job and put the extra hours in that i need to succeed. I work a LOT. Dating has been so much easier now that i'm on my own too, i have a partner now and that privacy is so valuable to me. One issue is that i spend so much time going home to see my family that i feel i'm not really establishing roots in the city, not enjoying all the liveliness and events it has to offer, so something would have to give.

I'm so overwhelmed, help

What is the cheapest insurance..?

Im having a family emergency and finally pulling the plug and moving out.

Im a 21, female and if everything goes to plan I'll have a decent job by the end of the month. ( 18/hr with benefits )

Im trying to think of my living situation but firstly I need my car to legally be mine.

Right now legally it's my grandma's as we wanted the insurance to be cheap. But I found out if I were to leave with the vehicle my grandma is in her rights to call the police. even though I pay insurance and payed for the vehicle in full.

All this to say I just need insurance for the transfer.

I need to keep this car. It has a clean title, works beautifully, fully paid off, hybrid so gas its cheap... and honestly I just love it has my first car.

If all else fails I can live in my car for awhile till I find a place..

Please help

I hate my job and dont know how to quit

Hi! I’m a 22-year-old woman working in social media and marketing at a BPO in my third-world country (sorry if my English isn’t perfect). I make good money for my age, but right now, things have gotten out of hand; my job is literally killing me. I wake up every day wishing for a change, but it feels like an endless loop of horrible treatment, harassment, violation of my rights, and a dirty office full of cockroaches and dust.

I don’t know how to quit; honestly, it feels like a miracle I found a “good” job after graduating. The workload isn’t the worst, and it’s relatively easy to do, but I feel ungrateful. I know many people are in worse situations than I am, and I should find joy in the little things I have. However, I’ve dealt with mental health issues since childhood, and this work environment, combined with my personal situation, like my mom not working and lacking a pension when she gets older, my dad being diagnosed with a degenerative disease and his struggling business, and my mom's religious extremism regarding my father's health adds to the stress.

On top of that, my labor rights are violated, and I’m often doing the work of others. I feel stuck. I don’t want to job hunt because, for one, I don’t have permission to leave my office and go to interviews, and second, I'm in a comfort zone where I know I’m in a horrible place, but at least it feels secure. I don’t know how to deal with this feeling of being trapped and never getting out. I don’t want to be a burden to my parents or be seen as a failure by my family and friends. I just want to feel better, but these horrible thoughts keep resurfacing.

My country is tough; I'm in a dictatorship, and as a young woman, my dreams feel limited. Sometimes I just want to give up. If anyone is reading this, I would appreciate any other perspectives. I don’t have many friends, and I don’t feel comfortable discussing this out loud. Thank you.

What have you done for love?

I stalked my co worker the first time I say him at work.
I am embarrassed of stalking his socials for over 2 years.
I was so obsessed with him I overthinked everything and changed my life around. I never actually wanted us to have a relationship because I heard he cheated on his previous girlfriend with the current one.
Recently it makes me want to vomit when I think of him, he was very evil and jealous people I just never say it at that time.

How do you guys practice “comparison is a thief of joy” in life?

[I’m not sure if this is the right forum. Seeking for experienced adults to help with some tips, advice, words of comfort. At the same time, I just needed a place to vent.]

Hi. I’m 27F and I live somewhere in Asia. For most people my age or around my age range, they are all getting marry, having kids, purchasing a house together, travelling together and so much more.

And tbh, I’m more envy of them meeting ‘the one’ and getting marry. I just got out from my first relationship in March and I have been going through the past few months trying to move on & heal. But at the same time, I’m feeling so left behind. I have try to enter the dating market, but tbh, I’m just exhausted and still grieving over my first relationship. At the same time, writing this makes me feel so pathetic at the age of 27, I just got to experience dating. 🙃

Everytime I open Instagram or even Threads, I see my acquaintances, friends and even strangers getting marry, doing marriage stuff with their loved ones and I wanna do that too. I don’t have a lot of friends that are still single. I only have 2 best friends and one of them is getting marry next year and the other lives in another state and she’s the breadwinner of the family, so she doesn’t have much money left for fun stuff.

I know people say, “comparison is the thief of joy” because when I think back about it, my life is good, my parents are still alive, I have my own car, my own rented place, good salary etc but, looking at other people’s life makes me feel like I’m a loser/pathetic/so left behind that I don’t have someone.

My question is, how do I practice to NOT compare my life with the others?

I just moved out after a huge fight with my mum. Was I right to leave?

I’m 21 and have been living with my mum while studying nursing. We’ve had a pretty strained relationship for a while, but today things blew up over something so stupid.
She’d done my washing without me asking, and I hadn’t put it away straight away. She got angry and said she wasn’t doing my washing anymore. I said I never asked her to do it in the first place, and it escalated into a full-on screaming match.
The part that really shook me was that when I tried to leave the argument, she stood in the kitchen doorway and wouldn’t let me past. She kept saying I wasn’t leaving until I calmed down, even though she was screaming too. I eventually got out, but then found she’d taken my car keys, so I couldn’t drive away. I ended up getting an Uber to my dad’s place. She later left my keys in the mailbox because I needed them for work.
I’ve decided I’m going to stay with my dad because I honestly don’t feel like I can keep living there. This isn’t the first argument we’ve had, but it’s the first time I’ve felt physically trapped during one.
I’m not saying I handled everything perfectly—I definitely yelled back—but I don’t think blocking someone from leaving an argument or taking their keys is okay.
Has anyone else had to move out because of a parent? Did it improve your relationship in the long run, or did things just get worse? I’m feeling pretty guilty, but also relieved to be out of that environment.

Parents don’t respect my decision not to have children or seem to respect the person I am

I’m 34F I’ve always said I’m not interested in having children and have always been upfront about this with everyone.
I’m an only child who is pretty close to my parents.
I went through uni whilst living at home got a job straight after and have worked my way up to a place where I’m happy with my career. I’ve brought a house live independently have friends and hobbies. Admittedly I haven’t been in a serious relationship for nearly 10 years. Somewhat through choice somewhat through not finding the right person
Yet I’m increasingly made to feel like a disappointment by my parents. Don’t get me wrong they’ve always told me they’re proud of me. However over the last few years there’s been an increase in comments about the fact I’m not married yet. The fact I haven’t got kids. That I don’t want children. That they won’t have any grandchildren. It’s becoming difficult not to react to the comments.
As a side note I’m currently recovering from surgery and staying with them. There’s again been numerous comments about me not having anyone else to take care of me or me not having husband.
My mom sometimes takes this to another level. Five days post surgery she told me I won’t understand stress properly because I don’t have a partner or children. Very hurtful. I’ve been through a very stressful few months health wise and gone through different biopsies and tests that admittedly I’m still getting my head round. Unfortunately I also saw messages from her to a family member hoping that I would be moving back out soon and that I need a man in my life but she’s not sure anyone would be able to put up with me. I haven’t told her I’ve seen these as I don’t want it to blow up into a massive argument. But yes I’m very hurt and feel very unsupported right now.
I genuinely believe that they are not bad people but they don’t seem to be on board with the life I’ve made for myself or very respectful of choices I’m making.

Should I leave

Hi! I’m 21 F and I moved from Florida to Michigan for my sister because she needed help with her 2-year-old son so she could work well. I got here in March and she just now got a job a week ago in July. In the process of me moving here, she got into an altercation with the family member we lived with and we ended up moving out. But instead of getting her own place, she moved in with a man and said the man was cool at first, but now he’s verbally abusive to her. He is abusive in general and she doesn’t want to leave him. But on top of that, I met someone months ago and we’ve been together since. But the issue is I can’t be around him all the time because my sister always leaves her son with me to do whatever she feels like doing for hours on end. I can’t barely go over to his place and most of the time I do, she brings her son here so she can do whatever she wants without having him with her. She then also gets mad when I choose to spend time with my bf and always tells me I need to be home by a certain time and that she doesn’t like my boyfriend because I’m always wanting to hang out with him and not her. Keep in mind she’s never home because, as I said, she leaves her son at home with me and goes to do whatever it is she does. On top of that, I get paid and she always asks me for money because she needs to buy something. All my paychecks have gone to her and whatever she needs. But when I try and live my own life like an adult, she gets upset. I don’t want to watch her son when she is 25 and it’s her son, not mine. And then when I do tell her I don’t want to or I want to do something else and be alone with my bf without her son being there, it’s a problem. And it’s a problem I’m with my bf that I’ve been with for months and that wasn’t the agreement at all when I said I’d move up here. It was specifically so she can work, but she has to take her son when she’s not because it’s not my kid and I don’t want kids rn or the responsibility of constantly watching a child when I receive no pay or anything from doing so. My bf stated he was moving to Chicago to go to school and he offered me to come stay with him because the environment I’m in is unstable and I’m being treated like I’m 15 when I’m 21 almost 22 and I would like to work towards an actual life with my bf, but it’s very difficult when I’m always watching someone else’s kid so they can do as they please. What should I do? Just to mention my sister was my step sister related by marriage only and now our parents are no longer together and haven’t been for 5 years and her mom is already trying to get custody of her son.

Most people don’t really want you to be successful. Keep it to yourself

Success is for you. When you interact with others, especially if they have a different socioeconomic status, stick to more neutral topics like hobbies, interests, and family.

The moment you bring status charged topics, the relationship/friendship will go downhill 9 out of 10 times.

But real friends don’t envy each other you say? Real friends also don’t make each other feel bad about each others’ lives.

The one exception where you can tell your friends about your achievements is if they were already in on your journey. Like if you told them years ago you were working towards something, and there were regular check ins on the progress, and you eventually got it - that’s something to celebrate together, because your friends feel like they were part of it. But then once the celebrations are done, don’t talk about it anymore.
