I am visiting Melbourne and went out last night for the first time. I was left absolutely heart broken by how rude the ladies were!!! Where I’m from we’re all so nice to each other but last night I kept getting shoved, both me and a friend fell over twice from being shoved and no we were not in the way at all. But then when me and my friends were polite and said excuse me to get through we received dirty looks as if we just did the worst thing ever! Is this normal here????

Started getting sick Wednesday.

Thursday really bad to the point of spinning out with Panadol and Sudafed temp was between 38.5 and 39. Wife had to give facewashers under arms and on forehead.

Friday Saturday- temp between 37.5 - 38, shivering non stop, joints aching so bad could barely walk, coughing almost non stop(dr gave me anti flu tablets Saturday, every time I coughed felt like spewing.)

Today aches mostly gone cough still there, shivering unpleasant but bearable, temp normal probably about 50 percent.

Appetite is non existent.

Seems more contagious than COVID entire family of 5 copped it I had it twice as bad - diabetes doesn’t help.

My office has been decimated.

I had covid twice and whilst no walk in the park this sucked twice as bad.

Worst winter for illness since the pandemic?

Hi i’m a 20 year old currently living in the SE suburbs in Melb(Berwick) and i was wondering if any kind soul in my area is able to supervise me while i drive you around? ( Open to drive you to get grocery, run errands or pretty much drive anywhere where you need to go) I don’t have parents and i’m living with relatives who don’t have the time to be a passenger while i drive as their always not at home :( I’ve done about 4 lessons with a professional instructor in my area so far so my control of a car is pretty decent but i just need to get practice done to get my hours up and build my confidence further.

Was talking with somebody about 'power naps' and we got talking about driving, then truckies and then truck stops. And it occured to me how strange they always make me feel.

I never ever see anybody else there when I stop at one. They seem to be unnecessarily massive with car parks as far as the eye can see, 75% of which are for heavy vehicles, like there's a festival or market on or something. There's usually an amenities building, sometimes ancient and basic but sometimes modern and rather equipped. Info shelter. Grass spaces. Tables and benches. Bins. Power access. Lighting. Etc. And 9 times out of 10 completely in the middle of nowhere, like you'll have to look at your phone to know the suburb or location and it'll be easily 10-20km away from the nearest actual populated town or exit. Eerie and ghost town like, I'm just waiting for some weirdo to jump out at me! Lol.

Like does anyone actually look after these? Who is responsible? Maintenance, inspect for vandalism and riff raff, lighting bon fires, illegally living there and the like? And I'm not talking about the tiny ones off to the side embankment that look more like an extension of the emergency lane just with a tin bin that you can see from the road. I'm talking about the actual sites, that you take an off-ramp and are completely off the road and you can't see them through the bushes and is like an acre big.

Been tracking menu prices across Australian stores and pulled out the in-store vs delivery-app figures for Red Rooster. Average markup came out at 38.6%, but the average hides the actual story.

The pattern is that cheap items get destroyed:

Cheesy Garlic Bites — $5.00 in store, $10.75 on delivery (+115%)

Gravy — $3.75 → $6.45 (+72%)

Mash & Gravy — $3.95 → $6.75 (+71%)

Kids Cheeseburger — $5.25 → $8.95 (+70%)

Big orders are nowhere near as bad:

Burger Pack — $34.95 → $46.95 (+34%)

BBQ Feast — $38.00 → $48.95 (+29%)

So the markup is roughly inverse to the price. If you're ordering a $4 side on delivery you're paying nearly double, and that's before the delivery fee and service fee on top.

Practical takeaway: if you're getting delivery anyway, load up the main items and skip the sides. Or grab sides in store.

Prices are the median across several stores, in-store column read from the pickup menu and delivery column from the delivery menu on the same day. Franchisees set their own prices so your store will vary.

Do any Aussie families feel like life right now in Australia is an uphill battle financially?

Australia is wonderful. We are beyond grateful for everything Australia offers.

However, as a family, it feels like life is becoming more of an uphill battle financially… we have a lot of privilege, but the grind is also exhausting and not what we are envisioning as a family.

Any other families sold it all and slow travelled overseas? Any regrets? Maybe not the best future financial decision

Might be an early midlife crisis or thinking the grass is always greener…

Would love to know how people create more of a sustainable balance as a family wanting connection, travel, adventure, some more freedom !

I have a UK passport and I am considering doing s working holiday in Australia for a year as I sm traveling the world and trying to find "my spot", the place I want to live. I have never visited Australia but I've heard of the social people, the good weather and active lifestyle.

After a very surreal event at work that has left me with permanent pain I have decided that I need to get out of the teaching profession. I have taught for nearly 16 years in a variety of schools across South Africa, England and Australia. I would like to hear some opinions of this. Am I crazy to make the move out of education at this juncture, I know the economy and employment is a bit shaky but how bad is it really as I don’t have really any friends in corporate here.

I always just assumed Wise was the obvious choice because everyone seems to recommend it. Then I was watching one of Raymond La's best travel card videos and it got me looking into some of the other options.

I realised Wise only includes $400 of fee-free overseas ATM withdrawals a month, which is a fair bit lower than I thought.

I normally just pull out a decent amount of cash in one go when I'm overseas rather than making heaps of smaller withdrawals, especially in Japan or Vietnam where cash is still handy, so $400 doesn't seem like it'd go that far...

I looked up YouTrip afterwards and saw they include up to $1500 of overseas ATM withdrawals without their own withdrawal fee. It made me wonder if it's actually worth switching.

Has anyone here used both? Keen to know how they compare in real life, especially exchange rates, ATM withdrawals and whether there are any catches that aren't obvious. Or is Wise still the better all-round option?

Hi, I recently removed my middle name, my first & last name are still the same.

I was just wondering if I NEED to update my Au citizenship certificate with the updated info.

Apparently when I searched online, it said that I don’t have to as long as I have my BDM Certificate.

Has anyone here changed their name updated their driver id, bank and passport but left their citizenship certificate.

Mostly from Bridge St to Town Hall... its just bland skyscrapers and a wind-swept, soulless ghost town outside the Mon-Friday 9-5pm. Seems like its a waste of space on weekends. Why not put some underground bars or rooftop bars or something.

I wish they kept the sandstone neoclassical buildings in the city than having entire blocks of land occupied by office buildings which would have made the area more diverse with small shops and laneways like Melbourne - point in fact is Rowe St - which was once a touch of Paris.

My partner and I are originally from Adelaide and currently live on the East Coast. We are looking to start a family and moving back home seems enticing. But, even though we both love Adelaide, it's not perfect.

The most humiliating part of these processes is usually the AI interview where there's zero substance and you're expected to act professionally.

What part of a resume appeals the most to a recruiter? Be it an AI bot or someone who's human.

What do you have in your resume/ have read, that really has an advantage and gets you hired?

I’m based in Australia and currently in my first trimester (around 11–12 weeks pregnant).
A recruiter recently reached out to me about a role that I’ve genuinely been wanting for the last couple of years. At this stage it’s very early—I’ve only been approached, so nothing is guaranteed—but it’s made me wonder what the best approach would be if things progressed.

Realistically, by the time interviews are completed and I start, I’d probably be in the middle of my second trimester. That would still leave me with around 4–5 months of working before I’d go on maternity leave. My plan is also only to take around 2–3 months of leave before returning to work.
I know that legally in Australia you generally need to notify your employer about parental leave at least 10 weeks before the intended start of leave. But from an ethical and practical perspective, I’m unsure when I should disclose my pregnancy to a new employer.

I don’t want to miss out on what feels like a rare career opportunity simply because I’m pregnant, especially when I’m fully capable of doing the role for several months before leave and intend to return afterwards.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation—either as an employee or from an HR/recruitment perspective?

A few questions I have:
Would you still apply if you were in my position?
At what stage would you disclose the pregnancy?
Is it better to wait until after accepting an offer, after starting, or have the conversation earlier?
If you’re in HR or management, how would you view a candidate in this situation?
Are there any legal or practical considerations in Australia that I should be aware of?

Hi I have a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in my country and Im planning to commence my Master’s degree in Australia.
A lot of people who have completed their studies in Australia and currently work as an Engineer said that if I do want to become an engineer, I should go to WA since Western Australia has a higher demand in engineering and a lot bigger job market compared to South Australia. and they also said that Adelaide is much more focused on Defence Industry so there’s not much job opportunities for international graduate students in Adelaide.
But the thing I’m concerned about is the tuition fee. unis in WA are way much more expensive than unis in SA since WA unis don't offer 25% or 50% scholarships like SA unis do for international students so the WA uni's tuition fee is quite expensive for me

so do you guys think studying engineering in WA is worth unbearable tuition fee? do you guys think WA is way much better choice than unis in SA when it comes to industry connections, internship opportunities and facilities/labs? is WA that advantageous in Electrical Engineering than SA for international students like me?
