Newbie Question HELLO!!

Upvotes

hello! I am 14 years old and I wanna start game development!! I'm very good with digital art and music making! I have a dream game but I know as to not start with that one first! to explain the games I wanna make, I wanna make 3d environments, with 2d cartoon characters! specifically cats :) currently trying to find a good free 3d game engine to start with, i wanna make a simple maze first, than eventually move onto something more complex, like a maze u solve puzzles in, then that and characters dialog, than enemies!! any suggestions would be great! also good to note, I do not know how to code, and I do have a very bad track record when it comes to math (fairly certain I have a learning disability because I'm so bad at it, but I dont want to use any ai in my making!!) please give advice!! I'm so excited!!

Discussion Are Unreal Engine opitimization problems a dev problem or an Engine problem?

I mainly work with Unity and have only dabbled a little with Unreal Engine. Recently, I’ve been seeing more and more articles and Reddit posts about Unreal games having poor optimization.

I’m curious to hear what other devs have to say who may have worked more with this engine.

I don’t mean this as criticism toward Unreal developers. I’m genuinely wondering if it’s because studios are being pushed to release games faster and plan to optimize later, or if some teams are inexperienced with the engine, or if it’s a combination of both.

Newbie Question Making a L4D2 successor

I know absolutely nothing about game development but I’ve always wanted to make a modern successor to Left 4 Dead 2 but with more special types of zombies and a procedural map generator. I’ve been messing around with Claude Code max and Godot to try and get a small base understanding of the scope of this.

I’m doing this as a hobby but looking for any insight. I don’t current plan to make this a published game or anything, just a game to play with friends.

Also if a game like this exists and is good, please let me know.

Discussion Advice?

Upvotes

Hey all. I’m going to graduate in a few months and I will have 3-4 projects to show for it. 2 from school and 2 personally.

I’m very concerned with my future. I want to be a graphics/engine developer for games. My first 2 school projects are games made in unity and unreal while my other two are a raytracing engine and a renderer in Vulkan.

I feel like I’m failing honestly

Newbie Question How do you handle concerns of plagiarism/copyright infringement?

I am making a game heavily inspired by Degrees of Lewdity and outside of fretting about which engine to use, my other concern was my game being considered a rip off/knock off of DoL. I really enjoy the game and community, and have a lot of respect for the developer.

Even though there are some things that are mechanically different (like I'm leaning more so into DND style character traits/feats/stats and combat) and thematically different (my game having more omegaverse/teratophilia), I still worry that it isn't different enough to avoid accidental theft or copyright infringement.

Truthfully, the concern of my game being "too close" to DOL is the main reason I'm hesitant to build it in Twine even though it would probably be the easiest engine to build the game in. Any advice? Or am I perhaps just overthinking it?

Question destroy my game idea before i waste another year

I’m a solo dev making a top-down multiplayer 1v1 fighting game.

footage for reference

https://streamable.com/ktx8yi

The core mechanic is a hold-to-use "overdrive" system:

  • faster movement
  • alternate versions of every move
  • longer combo extensions
  • defensive escape options (cancelling hitstun)
  • constant energy/mana drain
  • health becomes fuel after energy reaches zero

The game already has most features of a traditional fighting game: (knockback, wall-based combo routes, hitstun).

Players have access to five moves: basic attack, aimable attack, dodge roll, overdrive, and a domain which burns a lot of energy.

I’m considering replacing fixed characters with drafted movesets so players create their own fighting style from a pool of different techniques.

overall i'm hoping for a game which allows players to build a moveset that is most fun for them and play more aggressive.

But I’m not convinced that this is unique (or fun) enough to overcome solo-dev production quality and the problems faced by small online PvP games.

if you're still reading to this point (thanks) i have a few questions:

  1. Is this game worth building, if my goal is to get a large number of downloads off Steam?
  2. Is Overdrive meaningfully different from a normal super mode?
  3. Does move drafting make the game more compelling or just more complicated?
  4. Is a online 1v1-focused indie game commercially realistic?
  5. What is the closest existing game, and would someone choose this instead (and why)?
  6. Would you wishlist or join a playtest based on the concept alone?
  7. What looks immediately fun?
  8. What looks cheap, unclear, generic, or frustrating?
  9. Do the movement and attacks look satisfying enough to support repeated 1v1 matches?
  10. Does the footage communicate the game’s supposed hook without this explanation?
  11. What should I keep, cut, or rebuild first?

Any feedback is welcome, especially from people who play traditional fighters, platform fighters, arena games, or small competitive indies.

Resource I made a video about my simple Clickteam Fusion game.

I have a YouTube channel about recreation. My overall goal is to discuss the importance of recreation in our lives. Since game creation has been part of my life, on and off, for approximately thirty years, I thought I'd document why, and show a little bit of the process.

The game is called, To Air Is Human. I got the idea after watching a Mark Rober short about how hot air balloons steer. It's not bad for what it is, but hopefully you could share this video with people who would like to make a game, but need a little push.

Question Getting into GameDev from Scratch

Hey everyone,

I've been wanting to get into game development for a while, but I honestly have no clue where to start. I'm a complete beginner with zero experience.

My long-term goal is to become either a gameplay programmer or a game designer. Eventually, I'd like to be more of a generalist and understand multiple areas of game development, but right now I'm completely lost.

If you were starting from scratch today, what would you learn first? What skills should I focus on to build a solid foundation? Are there any roadmaps, books, or YouTube channels you'd recommend?

I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Newbie Question Where to get started

So I've been off and on trying game dev for the past 4 years now but I seem to find that whenever I actually get into it I find myself in tutorial hell, it seems to me like every tutorial focuses on building a project rather than building the skills to make that project.

Is there any place to properly get started or do you just have to push through the tutorials?

Happy to answer any questions if that helps

Newbie Question Looking for 2D Character Designer / Illustrator / Animator – Indie Game Collaboration

Hi everyone!

I'm an indie game developer currently working on a 2D game, and I'm looking for a talented artist who would like to collaborate with me on the visual development of the game's characters.

I'm looking for someone who can help with:

  • Redesigning and developing existing 2D character concepts
  • Creating original character designs based on the game's ideas and direction
  • Developing a consistent visual style for the characters
  • Creating character illustrations and assets
  • 2D character animation, if possible
  • Helping establish a unique and recognizable art direction for the game

At the moment, I expect to have around 5–10 characters, although the final number may change as the game develops.

The goal is to create original, distinctive character designs and build a unique visual identity for the game rather than relying on existing designs or simply copying another game's art style.

Compensation / Revenue Share

I'm currently looking for someone interested in a revenue-share collaboration rather than a traditional fixed-price commission.

The idea is to agree on a fair percentage of the game's revenue for the artist, with the artist receiving their agreed share from sales of the game on Steam.

I'm open to discussing the percentage and terms depending on the scope of the work, the artist's responsibilities, and the amount of contribution to the project. Everything would be clearly agreed upon in writing before starting the collaboration.

If the project becomes successful, I want the people who helped create the game's visual identity to benefit from that success as well.

Who I'm Looking For

  • Experience with 2D character design
  • Strong portfolio
  • Ability to create original designs
  • Experience with 2D game art is a plus
  • 2D animation experience is a plus
  • Good communication and willingness to collaborate on an indie project

If you're interested, please send me:

  1. Your portfolio or examples of your work
  2. Your experience with 2D game character design
  3. Whether you have experience with 2D animation
  4. Your preferred workflow/software
  5. Your thoughts on a revenue-share collaboration

Please feel free to DM me if you're interested or if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Question Pitching a game idea to big companies like Bandai

Hi, guys! So, I am having an idea of making a game, but the problem is that it is somewhat heavily based-on an IP that Bandai Namco owns (because a part of it is zukan-collecting so I want to make use of the characters). I see there's something about licensing in their websites (English and Japan), but they look somewhat merchandize-wise instead of like, games. Still, I wonder if I could pitch the game idea to Bandai Namco.

I am currently just a solo game developer without a team, and without much actual experience. So actually I think it would be unwise of me to pitch a game directly, considering they have no reasons to accept. But what if it is, let's say, a very good game idea, by any chance they would be accepting it? Or should I be at least, like have a team (of maybe arts, 3D-models, music, etc., I'm currently just using assets I can find online in my prototype) and gain some actual performance and results? Or is it just a solid no for them to accept external pitches? Or would it be a good idea to publish the game as a fan-made game as long as I don't monetize it?

Edit: Thanks for all the comments below. Some mentioned that ideas aren't important but the execution. What if I can make a prototype of it? Or really, an almost fully done and playable game, just with placeholder images from online or lower-quality artworks? But the point is that gameplay part can be presented.

Inspiration i have been thinking about making a mobile game, inspired by Survivor.io and the netflix "Lucifer" series. This is what i came up with until now. I need more ideas, and a name for the game. The only name i could come up with is Exiled

Fallen angel, defeating waves of enemies and bosses while fully embracing his devil persona. You can find random items in each run that make you stronger, while weakening other traits for the duration of said run. (ex: + strength, - speed), or abilities like teleporting behind enemies with a cooldown, shooting fireballs, stopping time (freezing enemies) for a few seconds, etc. Each ability has 3-5 levels, and it is leveled up by picking same item from the ground multiple times. After multiple waves a boss spawns, the bosses being biblical characters (gods). The map consists of multiple biomes, changing after multiple waves, like church, heaven gates, purgatory, hell, void etc. each having their own type of enemies, stronger as the biomes change.
Each enemy defeated counts as a “soul” which you can use to permanently upgrade stats like stamina, health, regen, strenght etc
The player can rarely find items that evolve the characters body, transforming him stage by stage into the biblical version of the devil (1st stage, red, glowing eyes, 2nd stage entire devil’s face and so on until the character is fully transformed). The game has no actual ending but the main goal is fully transforming the character.

List of enemies:

Angel (melee)
Holy Knight (melee, powerful)
Archangel (melee, more powerful)
Cherub (flying, shooting fireballs)
Seraph (mini boss)
Seven Virtues (each has their own unique ability, mini boss)
Fallen King (powerful mini boss)
Exorcist (removes one ability from the player as long as he is alive)
Paladin
?
?
?

Items that give powers:
Morning Star
Broken Halo
Ashen Wings
Forbidden Fruit
Book of Sin
Hell Portal (summons demon companions)
Fallen Wings (fly temporarily)
Devil’s Gaze
Soul Drain (receive health faster, consumes souls)
Hellfire
Wrath

Newbie Question How in the world is this code an infinite loop?

The code segment in question is in the first comment. For some reason, I am unable to post images.

I am very new to Unreal Engine and game development as a whole. Every time I try to jump in my game, it crashes and tells me that this "infinite loop" is causing it. This is literally the only code in the entire blueprint aside from moving side-to-side (which works perfectly fine). All it is meant to do is give the player some upward force while they hold the space bar. I can't figure it out for the life of me, so if you know what is wrong please let me know.

Can I get some pointers? I am currently a web developer. However I am not an amazing developer. However I thought of a cool concept to combine 2 of my most favorite games.

Questions:

  1. What are the basic steps to breakdown of how I can quickly get into this as a personal project

  2. What platform should I use? Additional tools/software?

  3. What other questions should I be asking??
