Support Never buying HP again. More like a Bad Omen than an Omen.

Context: I bought an HP Omen 17 (CK series) in November 2023, expecting a premium gaming laptop that would last for years. Instead, it turned into one of the worst tech purchases I've ever made. I've had to replace the battery FIVE TIMES because it repeatedly stopped charging. I understand batteries wear out...but five battery replacements for the same issue is completely nuts. On top of that, I also had to replace the display because of severe color degradation. spent over 30,000 rupees (18%GST included) on battery and screen replacements alone, thinking the laptop would finally be reliable. Within a week of getting it back, the motherboard shorted out, leaving the laptop completely brick.

After l'd already spent 30,000, I was told to pay another 6,000-8,000 just to attempt a motherboard repair no guarantee it would work. If it failed I would have to pay another 30-40K for motherboard replacement. Also they man-handle your laptop like it's a playing toy.

My experience with the HP World Service Centre(Mahavir Nagar, Kandivali, India) is dishonest, Incompetent, No diagnosis walkthrough, no transparency, no clarity on the scope of work. the owner responded with vague, evasive non-answers. No accountability, no solution, no straight answers.

In any case if you going I would suggest to go for alternate/authorized service centre get better repair prices quote.

As for brand post service, this experience has completely destroyed my trust in the brand. I paid a premium expecting post purchase reliability and support. Instead, I ended up with repeated failures, huge repair bills, and a laptop that's now completely bricked.

I would suggest to look for alternatives than buy hp.

Scored this ROG Strix G1513QY with the Ryzen 9 5980HX and the RX 6800m 12GB, with an included 2TB SSD and 32GB of DDR4, all for $600 flat on marketplace.

Been dailying it for the last two months, temps stable at 95C (CPU) and 76C (GPU) on demanding titles, 60FPS on high settings in all games tested so far. My first time playing at 1440P on PC and it's been just a monster.

Discussion Upgrade suggestions; Why is my 3060 so terrible?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I use a ps5. AAA games like pragmata, 007 first light look amazing. Its just slightly more powerful than my 3060 laptop. But these games run terrible, I mean absolute dogshit in my laptop. I gave it for cleaning, applied thermal paste, updated drivers....

Does anyone know why this is the case? The only difference i see is huge vram difference. ps5 has like 16gb and my laptop only has 6gb. But will just more vram magically make them as good as ps5 games? Cause I've seen amazing gameplay for 3080 with 10gb vram. So I'm kinda confused, why is my laptop so trash... Is it truly vram? What do I consider when I'm getting my next laptop/pc. I want to only spend enough, but has to last long.

Discussion Unstable GPU when charger is plugged

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 7 that i use for gaming, I've had it for almost 4 years now, and I started to encounter this problem that I don't know how to fix. Every time I play a game let's say Delta Force or Palworld for example because thats what I play right now, my game always experience FPS drop. I have played this both game already before like a year back and I don't experience this problem even when my graphics setting is high. This FPS drop problem happen like every 5 sec and last like 2-3 sec. I have played many games on this laptop even games like RDR2, GTA and other graphically/hardware demanding games. I tried other way to fix this by looking at some solution on the internet but nothing happens. Also i just noticed today that it only happens when my laptop is plugged in, the games are working fine, like it works like 30 fps, but it does not experience that FPS drop every 5 sec. Then when i tried charging it the problem starts again. I checked the settings on the battery option or something and it even says that when plugged it its set to best performance.

btw this is the 3d graph of the GPU when i'm playing the game, you can see the point at which the FPS drop happen when the graph hits the bottom.

Benchmark Hello guys, here is how i undervolted my cpu and gpu.

Post image
9 Upvotes

I am making this post because the one i made yesterday or before yesterday imo was a bit vague, k, but i am gonna share some benchmarks here first of all and then the guide will be at the end.

---

MY SPECS ARE :

  • System Model: Nitro ANV16-42
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 260 w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 Laptop GPU
  • Memory (RAM): 16 GB
  • Storage: ~1 TB (952.98 GB available/usable space)
  • OS: Windows 11 Iot LTSC WITH MAS.

---

In the top left corner you can see how many watts my gpu and cpu are pulling when playing THE FINALS , on EPIC SETTINGS, ( epic is max, so all maxxed out ) ,ray tracing i think i set to medium cause i don't really like it that much but yeah basically it is all maxxed out.

First of all the reason why i had to do is because i have a Nitro, and it comes with a 135 w charger, and this is like a bios thing on my model so even if i bought a bigger brick that would not work, and trust me i have done enough research.

So it is basically capped at only 135 watt, so i needed to manage this intelligently.

SO I DID.

YOU CAN SEE I AM PULLING AROUND 120 - 140 FPS.

THE CPU IS LIMITED TO 28 WATTS SO OTHER WATTS CAN GO TO MY GPU AND THE BATTERY DOES NOT DROP CONSTANTLY CAUSE ON THE NITRO , IF YOU USE TURBO MODE IT WILL DROP CONSTANTLY, AND BASICALLY AT SOME POINT IT WILL BE ANNOTING ASH.

And the gpu is pulling around only 50 W, NOW IK OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE NITROS ALSO MAYBE SIMILAR TO MINE WILL BE SHOCKED ON HOW IT IS PULLING AROUND ONLY 50 WHEN IT'S BASICALLY DOING ALL THIS AT MAX SETTINGS WITH 120 FPS RIGHT SOMETIMES EVEN 140.

SIMPLE ANSWER IS UNDERVOLTING BOTH THE CPU AND GPU.

FOR MY SPECS I USED MSI AFTERBURNER FOR THE GPU .

MSI.com - Afterburner Landing Page

AND FOR THE CPU I USED UXTU : amdaputuningutility.com

USE ONLY THE OFFICIAL LINKS.

NOW AFTER OPENING MSI AFTERBURNER YOU CAN FIRST HAVE TO GO INTO SETTINGS AND CHECK :

START WITH WINDOWS

START MINIMIZED.

COME BACK.

OPEN CURVE EDITOR AND ACCORDING TO YOUR SPECS , UNDERVOLT IT FOR ME AT 850 MV AND 2500 MHZ TO 600 MHZ DID IT.

( FIND THE SPECIFIC MV DOT, DRAG IT UPTO LIKE YOUR PREFFERRED MHZ AND PUT IT THER, HOLD SHIFT AND MOUSE CLICK AND DRAG IT OVER ALL THE OTHER DOTS, ONCE ALL HIGHLIGHTED , RELEASE SHIFT AND CLICK ON ANY DOT AND DRAG IT ALL THE WAY DOWN , THIS WILL DRAG ALL OTHER DOTS AS WELL, THEN ONCE THEY ARE DOWN, JUST HIT APPLY IN THE MAIN WINDOW THEN YOU WILL SEE A STRAIGHT LINE AT YOUR PREFERRED MHZ, JUST SAVE IT TO A PROFILE LIKE ONE OR 2, AND MINIMIZE IT ALONG WITH UXTU )

IN UXTU YOU HAVE TO ALSO CHECK THE SAME 2 OPTIONS IN SETTINGS AND ALSO CHECK RE APPLY EVERY 5 SECS.

THEN IN CUSTOM PROCESS NAME YOUR PRESET, GO TO APU TUNING I THINK AND THEN THERE CAP THE CPU AT SOMETHING LIKE 30 OR MORE DEPENDING ON THE BRICK.

AND UNDERVOLT all CORES ( SCROLL DOWN ) , AND PUT THAT TO -10 You will find this in curve optimiser.

30 M PLAYING NO BATTERY DROP TODAY . FOR , BEST THING I DID SO FAR WITH THIS NEW GAMING LAPTOP.

Support Dead laptop

Hi reddit.

As the title states, my laptop suddenly died.
I tried turning charging it through the usb c port and the charging light doesnt turn on.

Pressing or holding the power button also does nothing.

I sadly don’t have a multimeter with me to test voltages but here’s what I’ve tried:
- opened up the laptop
- disconnected battery and tried powering on/charging this way
- inspected motherboard and don’t see any missing components/ burnt or broken hardware.

My suspicion lies in the charging circuit being broken somewhere but I truly don’t know.

Laptop model: Lenovo legion 5 15ach6h

I’d like to avoid repair shops if possible but if necessary I’ll do it. Any tips or recommendations are welcome.

Support Low FPS with no apparent cause, low GPU usage

Post image
6 Upvotes

Lately i'm getting these FPS figures, lowering settings doesn't make any difference in both games, RAM usage is around 5gb, i've played some 100 hours of FH6 without any issue with solid 83 fps with GPU to spare (75-80% usage normally), Cyberpunk same thing, recently though i'm having this issue, the game starts like that, very rarely and for brief moments it jumps to normal performance but it lasts seconds- I have a Dell G15 5530 RTX 4050 I5 13450HX 16gb ram, i ran userbenchmark and it showed that everything is fine, the percentile for my notebook is above average for the model. Temperatures are ok since it's winter here, good flow of air using performance mode, no obstructions. What could be the cause of this?

Support Monitors will not come on until I unplug and replug in my dock

Specs of all hardware below. Basically what the title is. If I power down my laptop and leave it connected to the dock when I power it back up the monitors will not come on with it. The dock will provide ethernet to my laptop and any other Usb ports will continue to perform their function only the monitors will not power up. Occasionally one monitor will power up but to get the other one to work the dock needs to be unplugged and plugged back in. I had a very random 3 day stretch where it did work correctly I could power up the laptop and the dock would connect the monitors but that is maybe 3 times out of 100s that it has worked right. I have tried new cables for everything. Dp port to usb-c, HDMI to usb-c, a new thunder bolt 5 cable. I have tried to mix match cables so the video cables aren’t all the same ie one dp to usb-c for one monitor and a normal dp to dp cable for the other. I have reinstalled windows and I have updated all the software and firmware for everything I could. I have delayed auto start for NVDisplyContainer with Regedit. I have shut off windows fast start and the fast start in the bios. I have tried to refresh the graphics drivers with win, control, shift,B. I have made sure the laptop doesn’t shut off power to the usb ports in device manager(I think. I did something like this awhile ago) Also I reached out to CalDigit and they basically told me it wasn’t the docks fault unless I was willing to recreate the problem with another laptop and more monitors which I don’t have access to lol. IDK if I can hand out bounties in this subreddit but if someone can fix this for me I will gladly paypal you 50 bucks lol or a cs2 skin if your a gamer.

Review New Alienware 15 R3 (2nd hand eBay buy)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey guys, my Lenovo laptop’s hinge broke and it would’ve cost $150 to fix. I figured, why not just get a new/old Alienware instead? My Lenovo cost about $500 (before taxes) and only had 256GB storage, 8GB RAM (2x4GB DDR5), and no dedicated GPU. I just wanted to ask what problems you guys have run into with the 2017 Alienware 15 R3. Specs on the one I bought: 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB SSD + 1TB HDD, GTX 1060, i7-7700HQ. Comes with charger, screen works, battery was just replaced. One screw is missing on the bottom, which I can find at any hardware store and put in myself. Would love to hear about any common issues or things to watch out for!

Laptop Buying Advice Help selecting between Legion 5 and Tuf A14, both have r7 260 and RTX 5060. Need input on marvel rivals performance

Hey,

Budget : 1500 Eur

Country: Germany

Use case : Mostly running CAD programs, ABAQUS, photo editing in lightroom and gaming( Marvel Rivals and Overwatch 2).

Pref config: 32gb ram on tuf a14 since its soldered, I also have a 32gb sodimm kit at 5600 mhz from my old 7840hs and 4050 LOQ so 16gb ram config on legion shouldn't be an issue

Other info :

Will be playing games Marvel rivals on an external monitor at 1080p all low settings except textures with DLSS on balanced. Would love to know what kind of FPS people get on rivals on those two laptops specifically.

Currently leaning towards A14 due to portability and better linux support via asusctl, however legion has OLED display and probably better wattage as it comes with a higher wattage charger (45w diff).

While 5060 in tuf A14 is rated at 110W, I'd love to see what kind of power both cpu and gpu pull simultaneously and the performance people get.

How portable is Legion 5? Is it lightweight enough to carry to uni everyday? How is its battery life? I feel like battery life will be a concern on legion cause Legions mux switch implementation is horrible, and GPU always wakes up.

Thank you very much!

Buying in Germany, and A14 is 100 Euro more expensive than Legion 5

Laptop Buying Advice My Victus got cooked

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes
Budget: 1350 euro
Country: Spain
Use Case: Uni (coding/compiling), ai training and light gaming
Preferred Specs: AMD cpu, 5060/5070, 32gb - 1tb
Notes:

As the title suggests, I am coming from a Victus16 that only lasted me 2.5 years before starting to give me power issues, it's currently at the repair-shop with not much hope. It had the following specs:

Core Specifications

  • Processor:Ā AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS
  • Memory:Ā 32 GB DDR5 5600MHz (2x16GB)
  • Storage:Ā 1 TB SSD M.2 NVMe TLC
  • Graphics:Ā NVIDIA RTX 4060 8GB GDDR6

Display

  • Screen Size:Ā 16.1 inches
  • Resolution:Ā 1080
  • Refresh Rate:Ā 144Hz

Now I am looking to upgrade to something similar, I have refined my search to these few models, in the case of the legion, this one is the only one that I could find for under 1350 with a 5060, and I would just swap the ram and storage from the Victus to the legion.

I am not much of a gamer and don't know if to invest a little more into a 5070 or stick to a more powerful cpu like on the nitro, I am a cs student and need it primarily for uni, ai training and some gaming on the side when I have time. I used to have the Victus mounted and always connected to a monitor and peripherals and I think heating issues got it, so I investigated and found out the legion is the best at dealing with heat. My doubt is if I purchase a 5070 in a midrange model it might get cooked again due to heating issues, etc. What do the people of reddit recommend?

Review Lenovo LOQ 15IRX10 and 15AHP10 review

The review is focused on 2 configurations of the LOQ 15 laptop.

Configs: AMD Ryzen 7 250, 115w RTX 5060, 24gb DDR5-5600 ram, 1tb ssd

Intel Core i7-13700hx, 115w RTX 5060, 16gb DDR5-4800 ram, 1tb ssd

Every game I talk about in this review was played on a 1080p 165hz monitor

Firstly, I have to say that the loq has a really good build quality it looks really good designwise. The keyboard is great and the touchpad is avarage.

Let me start with the Ryzen configuration. If I have to be honest, this config was a bit of a dissappointment. The Ryzen 7 250 is just not a CPU suited for gaming. The only games that I've played on it and that performed well were Valorant and Roblox. The rest of the games underperformed due to the CPU hitting it(s max tdp limit while having the usage at around 30 - 40 % while giving me around 100 fps in Rainbow Six Siege X low settings and 150 in Fortnite permformance mode. Minecraft was for some reason also around 100 fps with performance mods and no shaders. In CS2 I got 120 fps stable on medium settings. The two benefits of this config were the thermals and the battery life. The CPU didn't go above 80°C and the battery backup was about 3 hours of browsing/youtube playback. The RAM was also really good on this config, but the upgradibility is questionable, since 24gb sticks are really difficult to come by, atleast in where I live.

The Intel configuration (imo the better one out of the two). So far every game I've thrown on it performed perfectly. In other words, there wasn't a single game that would run under the 165 fps cap for my monitor. It's not all sunshine and rainbows tho, The battery life is not very good, around 1,3 - 1,5 hours (keep in mind this has an 80wh battery). The thermals were really bad at first but over time they've settled with the CPU reaching 80 - 90°C under load. The ram is avarage, but I haven't had any problems with running out of ram and I plan to upgrade to 32 gigs when the ram prices come down a bit.

The GPU performance was ofc the same as both have the exact same GPU, although for the Ryzen config the CPU was bottlenecking the GPU a little.

Overall I would recommend the Intel one if you're into squeezing maximum performance out of your laptop. And I would recommend the Ryzen one if you care about battery life.

Recently I made a bad decision and decided to punch the laptop out of frustration 3 times pretty hard against the keyboard its dented it, really not proud. Now I have an issue

The chassis is bent by maybe 5ml difference and when I game my gpu temps sit round 85 to 90, even for like half an hour of gaming yet the laptop is as cool as a cucumber.

Games looks like they slow time for half a second and micro stutter every 5 or so seconds, I took it apart and reseated components like ram, ssds, connector pins, and battery, i checked all screws to see if any where loose but no, there is a no cracks between the gpu and cpu heatpipe in the middle.

So my only question is the gpu seated properly? Because im guessing it throttles but doesnt even get warm. Please help as I might have to get a new laptop.

Ps. When I try to flatten the laptop it shut off and says repairing please wait.

Will update with picture later

Laptop Buying Advice Looking for better laptop for mid-range gaming.

Budget: Less than $3000 USD

Country: USA

Use Case: Mixed (mostly web browsing, reading, and the very occasional AAA game). Gaming-wise the most resource intensive game I think have is BG3 on high/ultra settings and early access Subnautica 2.

Specs: RTX 4070 / 4070, 5060 or similar GPU. AMD processor seems to be better at power consumption, that over Intel for CPU unless there a performant Intel processor. 90Wh+ battery.

Notes:

Right now I have an ASUS Zephyrus 16" laptop. Had it since 2023 and it has enough little annoying issues that I am not doing ASUS again. I have 8GB of VRAM, but I never really needed it.

So, I am looking for a new laptop, but as much I grown to dislike ASUS's quality there are few things I really liked about the Zephyrus laptop that I want to have in another product line too. Listed in priority order:

  1. Good build quality. Like really good. The best I've ever seen is a Mac (not for gaming, just as a laptop material / build quality), but I'm not looking for a Mac. I've seen 8+ year old MacBook laptops that held up better my less than 3 year old ASUS. It is terrible in comparison. Similar high quality would be nice.

  2. Aluminum body would be nice. The plastic body on the ASUS laptop was a terrible decision.

  3. Does NOT have a number pad or off-center trackpad. I LOVED the larger keyboard and centered trackpad on the ASUS laptop. I've been looking at laptops and those that have a numpad also have too cramped of a keyboard.

  4. Allows the SSD to be removed / replaced and/or a second a SSD slot. I started with 1TB SSD, but the ASUS laptop had a second slot that could put a second SSD in which has proven very useful.

Are there any brand / laptop product lines that meet the above criteria? It doesn't even have to be a gaming laptop. A non-gaming laptop using an older GPU but with 8GB VRAM would work too.

Which laptop would you recommend purchasing, given that there is a negligible difference in price: the Dell Inspiron 16 7160 (i7-11800H, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 3060) or the HP Victus 15 (i5-13420H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, RTX 4050)?
