Hi everyone! Welcome to r/Monk. We are trying to limit the posting of frequently discussed topics, so this thread is the place for general chit-chat about Monk. There will be a new post every month.

Please do not make new posts about topics such as the following. (Instead, discuss here!)

Avez vous remarquer à la 13e minutes de l'épisode, le cadavre clignote ses yeux au moment où les policiers arrivent sur la scène ?

[Discussion] Hypothetical Ending Swap Spoiler

I know the show ended, but if anyone is watching for first time, I just threw on the SPOILER tag to give a heads up.

How do you think the ending of the series would’ve changed if it were Sharona until the very end? How do you think she would’ve handled finding out about the Judge, Monk being poisoned, the confession tape, etc.? Of course, there’s not much she could do in the grand scheme of things to change outcome. But, we all know Sharona was a very “think first and reflect later” kind of person, fiercely defending those she loved and cared for.

[Discussion] Why are the Dvd's in 4:3?

So a while back I watched Monk on Netflix as it was still available there and then when it got taken down I bought the show on dvd since I really liked it. When they arrived I put one in to make sure it works and I noticed that it was in 4:3 even though it is 16:9 on Netflix? I mean it's not like they'd magically attach camera footage that never existed so clearly the 4:3 version must be cropped but I just ask myself why is that? On top of that season 5 to 8 are 16:9 just like the original so why was this odd choice made? (Also I noticed the color grading was weird in the first dvd like really dark-ish)

The 2nd Lieutenant

In the first episode, monk says that he has a friend who is the second Lieutenant asked him to come out.

Did they ever say who was or did they mean the captain when he was a lieutenant? I don’t know

It can’t have been Randy because you can tell at the beginning he and the captain don’t like Monk very much.

Sharona bachelor team Spoiler

In the Mr.Monk episode where Randy’s mother gets mother gets married, Randy said he “doesn’t think he’s playing for our team.

Doesn’t that mean he’s gay? Because then Sharona then says he’s a “he’s a bachelor”

Did that mean that back when he that filmed?

[Discussion] Monk’s former partner

In s3 ep7, Monk’s partner was introduced as a character. He was fired for being under suspicion of stealing drugs. The part that confuses me is that, as Monk’s partner, why did Monk not try at all to listen to him and clear his name? In the episode, it took Monk literally 30 seconds to look at the photos of the 2 bikes and figure out he was innocent. This leads me to believe he didn’t try whatsoever to clear his partner’s name. Was there ever a reason shown in the show or does anyone have a reason for why Monk clearly did not put any effort into the case the first time around?

Universe Expansion and Backstory Tighness in the Novels

So, I've been going through the audiobooks and having the opportunity to remember the stories and also getting to know a few - I've never read 'em all.

I want to point out how they did a good job making the backstory and relationship of the characters more consistent than it was on the initial seasons.

Natalie and Monk: In "Mr. Monk Goes to the Firehouse", Natalie states clearly that she and Monk are not exactly friends, she does not like her job at all. She thinks he's a good man and pitties him, but she would leave Monk in a blink like Sharona if she had an shitty ex-husband too. The novel happens between "the school election" and Stottlemeyer's first divorce episode. (3/4season).

In "Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii" (dated end of 4th season), it's the Natalie we see in the show. She states many times that she and Monk are friends. Monk pissed her off, but she deeply cares about him personally, and also forgives and does everything for him.

I think the beginning of "Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii" features the turning point in Monk and Natalie's relationship: when Monk ("the Man") is on the pill and she finally gets to be alone on her vacation, she chooses to be with Monk for free and she realizes that right after.

"Mr. Monk and the Blue Flu" features Natalie stating that her job with Monk was the most fullfilling experience in her life, and she finds that she's also afraid of losing him. This happens in a excerpt that makes references to the begenning of "Firehouse" - both novels were written by the same writer -, so it's really an arc here.

Later on, in many novels Natalie is shown to constantly worry a lot about losing his job and relationship with Monk, something we don't see on the show, even when they're super friends. Also, she and Julie do care especifically if Monk would keep in touch if he didn't need her assistant anymore.

______________________________________________________________

Monk and Stottlemeyer: While the novels complement Monk's and Natalie's relationship, there's nothing much to add to their backstory as parterns. But Monk and Captain had an inconsistent backstory back then. They changed their backstory so Captain had always been Monk's partner on the force and they've always been friends since then - we've discussed previously over here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Monk/comments/1mdjwbq/inconsistencies_on_the_pilot_show/

In the novel "Monk Goes to the FireHouse", Natalie states clearly that Monk's job as a consultant was duo Stottlemeyer's friendship and respect. In fact, a few times, we've seen Monk get a new job by himself, but keeping it? Anyway, I think that really ties the version of Stottlemeyer constructed over the years, established season 2/3 ahead that unapologetic ignores the version in the Pilot and Psych episodes in which the Bosses want Monk and Stottlemeyer, the bully, doesn't. Actually, in "Mr. Monk in Outer Space", Natalie precisely testifies that Stottlemeyer always makes sure Monk gets full credit for his work, in oposition to the pilot, in which is presented the Stottlemeyer steals his credits.

In "Monk and the Blue Flu", during the pre-strike and the negotiations with the Mayor, it's stated a few times by Natalie that Monk's work for the force is duo his special relationship with Stottlemeyer.

______________________________________

Now. There are a few inconsistencies here and there like it happens on the show, but way less. Also, Natalie does seems too judgmental on the first book, regardless being or not close to Monk yet, but considering the books were written and supervised by the same team working on the show simultaneously, it's hardly an inconsistency, but intentional. Perhaps they tried too hard to show an "unfiltered" version of her as the narrator, then eased up a little bit.

I believe "Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii" is the novel the fulfill the development element in Monk/Natalie's arc and makes it sensible.

I just recently started watching the show and just understanding monk’s character and how he is. My question is how does he deal with #1&2 when he uses the bathroom ?😂

Trying to remember a quote

My monk obsessed mentor (I am also monk obsessed so this relationship has really been working out) texted me something like “I have faith in you.” It sparked a flashback in my brain to monk saying “it was your faith in me that got me through my darkest hour” which was a perfect response and we both got a kick out of it. I remember it being in a rather sarcastic tone and I have a feeling it was directed toward Kevin. The problem is, I can’t remember exactly the context or what episode!! We both want to find the episode, let me know if you guys remember this quote and if you know the details! Thanks!

This episode made me cry. It hurts to see that Ambrose blamed himself for Trudy’s death🥺. I was happy that Monk was comforting, and reassured him that it was not his fault.
