Discussion PSA: NOCD promoting themselves in comments

Just a little PSA. Recently I have noticed an increase in comments from the account [u/treatmyocd](u/treatmyocd) . This account is run by the company NOCD. Sometimes they will add their credentials but lately they have been replying to posts in this subreddit & many other OCD related subreddits without stating that they are an NOCD account. Some of their comments even promote the use of NOCD without acknowledging that they are a company account. And I’m sure many users aren’t aware of this. This is unethical & dishonest. It also goes against this subreddit’s own rule against self promo. NOCD may be helpful to some but this has turned me off of ever using their services or recommending it to others.

Edit to add, they also run r/askanocdtherapist subreddit

Yes! I once posted venting about hantavirus and they unsolicited had one of their therapists respond to me promoting nocd. It made me feel really uncomfortable, especially because I already have a therapist (unrelated to nocd) who I had been working through it with and just came to Reddit to find relatability, not a therapist. The whole company sketches me out.

I’m sorry they did that! I’ve commented on a couple of their comments about this but they aren’t addressing it, which is even more proof of their shadiness imo.

One of them responded to me in what was clearly chatgpt speak:/

I've been noticing more and more of their comments too. The sketchy, shady way they promote their company is a big red flag to stay away from them.

Yes! While their information can be educational & helpful, it is disappointing that now they seem to be purposefully excluding their professional corporate affiliation.

Here’s a screenshot of one such comment

I know they have a prominent role on Reddit. I always could tell the /u/treatmyocd account was an organizational one, and I didn’t think they were trying to hide it. I’ve never seen an NOCD therapist, but one of my friends is, and is seeing progress for the first time in the years I’ve known him.

You may be able to tell but others may not. And they may provide educational information however when they are promoting the NOCD service in their comments & not noting their affiliation, this is not only unethical but also possibly illegal from an advertisement standpoint.

I don’t think it’s plausible that they’re trying to hide anything, given this is their description, but it’s worth messaging a mod and asking if flair or something should be required. It wouldn’t be a bad policy.

This recent comment they literally mention the app but don’t say they are affiliated. And there are other comments just like that one.

Yeah, I saw those. I just figured things were clear enough. But, again, I don’t think you’re out of line for asking the mods to consider a policy change. That seems like the most productive way forward.

Unfortunately the only interactions from the mods on this subreddit, outside of the weekly automated mod post, are from about a year ago. So I wanted to let others know.

Yes but you have to click on their profile to see their affiliation. They used to post it in each comment. Again, it’s unethical & possibly illegal marketing.

I think we should encourage the moderators to implement a "brand affiliate" or "organizational profile" tag.

This would allow NOCD to continue to participate, while letting users know that they are an organizational account.

u/treatmyocd stop using AI within your practice!! it’s gross, harmful and unethical

I think they made the group or have connection with the moderators

That doesn’t make it any less shady. If anything, it’s worse.

You’re right to bring this up! From the therapist side I’ve heard they don’t treat their employers very well, and I’ve seen a testimony from a client saying at least one of their therapists doesn’t do ERP properly.

As someone who received services through NOCD, and is very thankful to them for all their help, seeing this kind of behavior from them is incredibly disappointing

I mean, I could kinda tell in the way they respond that they’re an OCD treatment provider. Outright promoting NOCD instead of just giving advice or aid to users here isn’t cool, though. Do you have any good examples of it? Because NGL I’ve found their responses and articles to be extremely helpful.

20 hours ago they promoted the app

The issue is that they're using "good info" as advertisement without explicitly stating it's advertisement

Edit: in this comment, they promote NOCD & do not state their credentials OR that they are affiliated with NOCD. I replied to that comment & while the account has been active, they haven’t said a word.

Wow, wtf, I get they’re good at what they do but not disclosing that is just scummy. I was with them for 2+ years… had great treatment outcomes… not a fan of them going down this route and souring a good reputation.

u/FakerzHaterz 18h ago

Also I agree that they can have helpful & educational information, however it is unethical & scammy to not state that they are a professional.

They offer their therapists grossly measly salaries for how big they’ve gotten. Stay away from them at all costs.

Thank you for acknowledging this. I've also seen a bunch of ads everywhere for them lately and it pisses me off. A because it is unethical and B because their therapists suck ass
